Thanks for putting such a Great video together. What I like most is your attention to detail and the last half of the video on how to make it all work. This is often left out or done without enough explanation. Also, is so clear that making modifications would be possible such as making a case, using different display, power supply, keyboard and Mouse.
Very good presentation. I wish I had seen this when it came out. It would be nice to have it fully assembled and ready to use next weekend for 2016 QRPTTF. Your presentation and Julian Sarokin's presentation show me how to go portable with battery and solar power. Thanks again for the presentation and the parts list.
ATTENTION VIEWERS: Just wanted to let you know that the 5V to 12V converter is NOT needed in this setup as the LCD can work on 5V, which you can power off the GPIO. KM4CFT
Interesting video Zack! Just started evening classes Linux and Raspberry Pi here. Great to see this compact PC being used in our amateur radio hobby. 73s de Wim (ON4AEM)
Great Video, now that Raspberry Pi 3 is on the Market, this video is a little dated, however, very comprehensive and easy to understand. Good work on the barrel jacks on your power converter, would have liked to see the test with the Multi Meter and voltages applied as you were adjusting the potentiometer . The last connections I would make would be the power, and finally, turning on the power with your battery pack. Thanks for sharing. I see your ring. congrats.
Sorry about the late response. I have been busy lately. The system draws about 2000 mA and the battery that I used is 12000 mAh so about 6 hours. You can get bigger batteries, you can get smaller batteries. It all depends on your budget.
I found this awesome all in one cheat for Street Fight Hero :) facebook.com/991511810916708/photos/a.991514264249796.1073741828.991511810916708/991514180916471/?type=3&pidid=fefd2d7c-2b79-4c0d-99d4-abaeed76a001 How To Build A Raspberry Pi Field Computer
To slim it down, I used a miniature screen (Not touch) designed for the Pi, I understand this is les DIY but I needed it to be smaller. and I out the whole thing into a small Zip-up enclosure made for a DS.
Zachary, Hi I love your video. It's just what I'm looking for. I'm brand new to Linix and Raspbery Pi OS. How do you add software to the system once the OS is installed on the SD card? I'm looking to get and install FL Digi on it. I'm involved with ECOMM and looking for a portable setup. Thanks for any help. 73 Bill N2BGR
cool video, hot glue a $2.00~ .36" voltmeter on the board on the cap or wherever and solder to output pins , it uses 30mA but shows you the output volts case the pot gets flaky. I also install synaptic but use command line apt-get for updates. Very cool video though...keep it up! 73's KF5CIF
i already have most of the parts lying around, so it will be very cheap for me to make this project. i actually built a "portable" raspberry pi in an old box lid, with a 7" screen. all the parts were held on or in with tape. it had no battery tho...
+Flowmoshun Zach was showing this setup to explain how a portable raspberry pi is built, but yeah, tinning the wires would help with preventing the wires from fraying to an extent.
you can install ubunto mate, rasbian, various multimedia software like Kodi playstation 1 and 2 ,wii u ,psp emulators ,retro games they are all stable and super awesome also you can install windows 10 iot on it which is not recommended (not stable) but it works fine !!
+Virus 282 Check the config file in boot, make sure that everything display related is set to default (except for hdmi_force_hotplug) see if that helps
Yes they cost a lot....a Raspberry Pi is £30 BRAND NEW you fry your laptop and your crying....fry a pie and just go get a new one. Plus the Pi is for intelligent people who like to learn to program their OWN apps, software and programs. As well as the codes for them to run. Raspberry Pi's are awesome
Techno Viking I think also it runs off of 5V vs the higher voltages that netbooks need. All comes down to the application, and also its fun in a way too. Here you can run the RPi with a cellphone battery charger.
"cat 5 line is becoming a little bit obsolete." That is a false statement! and furthermore it is not a cat 5 line its called a network interface card (NIC) Ethernet jack ect. It is very much compatible with cat 5, cat 5e, cat 6 and so on. I normally am not this short but this is just plain ignorance! and it pissed me off. If you claim to be an authority make sure you have the knowledge to back it up!!!
wait so Ethernet is going obsolete? hahahahha what? i litterly just got rid off 3 wifi cards out of all of my systems, guess what it saved me weeks of time using the Fast Ethernet 10/100/1000, vs the wifi connections.
"cat5 line becoming obsolete"....im sorry, are you insane 1st of all, its called Ethernet or rg45 jack 2nd of all, its the wireless that's shitty, and you should be using the rg45 cable when ever possible
+1998goodboy 1st of all, you are a douche, everyone knows what he is referring to. 2nd, the plug itself is an rj45 not rG45. When you do not want to use up your data when browsing with a smart phone do you plug it in to an ethernet port or use wifi at home or at a business? ...just asking

Late answer, but yes. Just disassemble display and remove 12 to 5v voltage converter, and power display from 5v directly.
Pretty cool man.
I have the same screen and was trying to do this exact thing,
but I couldn't get the screen to work properly.
Thanks for that man.
Cat5 is obsolete? I must tear out my entire cat5 wired network and replace it with all wifi adapters immediately. LMFAO
haha :-D , Still cant believe he said it was obsolete or whatever
ahhh :-) that makes sence i guess hehe
Meow
Reverend Veritas We have exclusively been using Cat6 for the last year or 2... Cat5e is more transitioning, it's getting phased out
Cat 5 is obsolete, cat 5e is still viable, new cable runs so be 6 though
I've installed fldigi on mine so I can use digital modes, and very helpful hint to get the AV working.
Great video. Lots of useful info. Thanks for posting it. I just ordered a Pi 3 and plan to use it as a media PC.

Pretty neat set-up man!
Can we directly get video output by 3.5 mm jack on first boot?

Can you run the monitor off of one of the USBs? I have a small TV that has a Mini VGA input
a nice and simple solution easy enough for anyone to set up :)
Great idea, I'm having trouble switching over to AV mode instead of hdmi
Awesome Video ,Super helpful ,........just wondering how much time does the 12000mah battery last?......I was planning to make one using the pi 2

Which one did you use? Cost?

What about cable management? Is there any way I can stuff all the cables in some sort of case to make it look prettier? Great video by the way!
The stock music you used in this video is becoming the new Sandstom. The internet must act on this issue, and we must act fast.
Have you tried to run winlink or any other type of software on it
what is that thing that converts the voltage from the usb to the monitor
i already have most of the parts lying around, so it will be very cheap for me to make this project.

1:45 not mini, but micro. there is normal SD, miniSD then microSD formats. i saw a triple adaptator normal mini micro.
Thanks for the instruction!
excellent video, thank you sir!
Wouldn't the wires being frayed not be an issue if you just tinned them?
+Flowmoshun Zach was showing this setup to explain how a portable raspberry pi is built, but yeah, tinning the wires would help with preventing the wires from fraying to an extent.
Nice video mate.
Cat 5, Ethernet is not obsolete.
Rick McCombs I have used ethernet on my Raspberry Pi before and it's just as fast if not faster than regular Wireless Wi-Fi
great video!
Did you graduate the year you posted this video? And are you from Louisiana?
Can someone tell me which flavor of linux he is using in this video ik he used noobs but he didnt show which one he used, thanks.
18:48 he used Raspbian
Can we install other OSs o the pi
On
Yes you can, there are several OS, NOOBS is a easy starter pack.
Thanks man

I used a HDMI monitor for my pi and the boarders never went away no matter what I did. Can any one help?

Have you heard of those nice portable computers called Laptop and some cheaper ones called tablet.... Rolf...
this is diy not buy.

+Ben Woodfield I have nothing against learning . In fact I own 2 pi's. I was expecting something more for a truly portable pi computer.
that intro music tho ... XD XP
+iKervinGaming They should've added "its CNN breaking news" after the music lol
you really get off on using a phone charger wow. i didn't learn anything that i didn't already know.
Lets get right intooooooo the neeews.
shut up garden gnome
Wouldn't it be easier and ultimately cheaper to just buy a used netbook for $50-$60?
Techno Viking I think he made it because of the fun :)
Techno Viking I think also it runs off of 5V vs the higher voltages that netbooks need. All comes down to the application, and also its fun in a way too. Here you can run the RPi with a cellphone battery charger.
definitely good point
i have a laptop that i can use in the field and on a boat. i can even use it in an airplane.
If that is the pi 3B.. then why you put a wifi and bluetooth dongle in there???
The pi 3B has bluetooth and wifi built in lol so you dont need that
there is no sutch thing as a B+ only the B 2
there is Rpi a, b, b+, RPi 2 b, and now 3
Brian C oh ok, sorry i gust never found one.
Or you can take your laptop/netbook/tablet/smartphone :/

Very nice setup. the nails.... not so much.
Yeah, or you could buy a cheap laptop for the price of all these components and save money xD

There is no RG45, according to the USOC. (universal service operating codes).
+Justyn Uhl oops...my bad here
why rassberry want you to educate your self by buying this card but not teach you beyond the os
this guy reminds me of dr steve brule
"Get you a sandwich" LMAO. And he eats with those nails (with his hands!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
