    Bagpipes are so cool. As someone hyperfixated in ancient history, I learned that the Bagpipes are originally from ancient Egypt. They have thousands of years of history and have been basically the same since their creation. Merchants took them to Europe, and the Romans spread them to Scotland.
    As someone with hEDS, I feel your pain. I also have weak lungs due to EDS, so all reed and brass instruments were off the table. I got to take piano lessons, so for a 9 year old, having a new substitute teacher each time really killed piano for me. Especially since most of them knew nothing about piano.
    I do regret not sticking with it and trying other string instruments such as harp and any of the chinese string instruments. My hypermobility isn't as bad as yours, but it's there.

    • @darrellm9915
      @darrellm9915 10 месяцев назад

      There's speculations on whether or not they were from Egypt, Turkey, or Southern Europe, but they have definitely not been the same since their creation. There are numerous different variations of Bagpipes that are not the same. The Scottish Great Highland pipe sounds nothing like Egyptian and Middle Eastern pipes, which is a good example. It also looks very different just like most of variations found across the world.
      So even though they were influenced by other people, the Scots perfected it by inventing their own version, which makes it completely unique to them of course.

I started my musical journey in elementary school on the trumpet and played brass instruments through college. After college I missed being part of a band and started going to watch/listen to a local Pipe Band practice. They decided I was showing up more often than some of their members and suggested I play a Tenor drum. I've been playing drums with them ever since. Tenor, Side, and Bass ever since.

    The only instrument he didn’t get to learn was the bagpipes, but he wanted to. Sadly, his health
    prevented him from adding that talent to his repertoire. One of my earliest memories was of hearing bagpipes and drums playing and of course my dad was the drummer for his unit.

      Your gateway to the pipes is the Irish tin whistle. It's basically the same fingering (except bagpipes have an additional hole at the bottom) so buy one of those for next to nothing, and get started. There is a huge range of folk instruments you can play with that fingering, including the practice chanter, which is a lot cheaper than a full set of bagpipes. You need to learn to play the practice chanter before you move onto the bagpipes themselves, as controlling the bag is a major challenge at first. Folk wind instruments are designed to play in one key (which makes them a lot simpler than classical wind instruments) though a skilled player can squeeze a few different keys out. The most common whistle is the D, but a C whistle is a bit larger and less screechy, and C is a common key for bagpipes.

    • @JR-bj3uf
      @JR-bj3uf Год назад +4

      Do it! Do it now. Do not put it off. It is a long road but so worth it. First get a practice chanter from a reputable bagpipe supply house. Then get the College of piping Green book. Now find an instructor or a pipe band in your area, walk in and say I want to play the pipes. Do not try and teach yourself. There are many stylistic things that make up bagpipe playing. You want to start with good habits because bad habits will haunt you for a life time.

    • @londonalicante
      @londonalicante Год назад +1

      @@JR-bj3ufI I agree, beyond the basics you can't teach yourself. That applies to any instrument, but more to the pipes than to the keyboard for example. I'm originally from London, I bought an Irish whistle when living in Ireland for a year but really got into Celtic music in Spain (northern Spain is Celtic, it's the same people as in Scotland and Ireland, they have flutes, pipes, accordion, fiddle, bodhran and some fantastic crossover Celt-pop and Celt-metal bands.) I learned so much from other musicians. I can play the practice chanter but I've never owned a bagpipe, so I never learned to control the bag properly - it's a different skill from fingering a melody. I don't think my neighbours would tolerate it in my small apartment but it's lot of fun!

    • @JR-bj3uf
      @JR-bj3uf Год назад +1

      @@londonalicante Playing the tin whistle and listening to Celtic music would give you a leg up on playing the pipes and understanding the flow of the music. That said there are finger techniques that are unique to this pipes including playing with the flats of your fingers, strange scale positions and lots of grace note combinations that make piping music sound like piping music. The bag is a whole different struggle. You should have 4 to 6 tunes down pat on the chanter before moving on the the pipes for the very reason that there is an enormous frustration level to the pipes. The reason it is important to have an instructor or a pipe band at this stage is you have to KNOW that your pipes are in good working order. I have watched new pipers struggle with leaking pipes, too hard reed and it's frustrating beyond measure. Care, tuning and maintenance of the instrument is another necessary skill for a good piper. Ya just can't go it alone.

    Спасибо за интересное видео! Песики просто супер! Есть небольшая просьба - можешь сыграть на волынке что-нибудь из творчества Милен Фармер? И ещё вопрос - как появилась запись с конём-барабанщиком? Расскажешь подробнее про съёмки? Кстати, я именно из неё и узнал про тебя :)

    I think bagpipes make perfect sense personally. When I was a little boy in the 90s it was the only instrument that could make me feel such strong emotions. They could make me cry out of nowhere, I could be happy but the beautiful sound of the bagpipes can always bring tears to my eyes.

    Ah, the Scottish heritage rabbit hole! My musical talent is at the level of appreciative listening 😁 but Scottish and Highland history and culture is fascinating, and the family connection makes it quite compelling.
    Bagpipes and violin have this in common, played well they are magnificent, played poorly they sound like a suffering animal. Thank you for playing magnificently.

    Polyphonic Ally... :) Would love to know how to start learning to play Bagpipes. I said on your previous video (How Bagpipes work...) that I have a somewhat ancient chanter that was handed down through my family but I can only play it by ear. I have decades of contemporary and classical training, theory and practical, so playing by ear works, but I would much rather KNOW how to play. :) Keep it up and I wish you all the best in the future! Break a leg!
