    Oh yes, I have to tell you what happened to me on the AT. I was at around the halfway point for the day and saw a nice log to sit on. I sat down on it and must have sat back too far. All of a sudden, my pack weight pulled me backwards and I couldn't stop myself from falling backwards. I ended up on my back in a very confined space and couldn't move. I was like a turtle upside down. There was a tree against me on the right and I couldn't turn that way. I finally was able to unstrap my backpack and then use my trekking poles as levers to get myself turned sideways and then I was able to get up. It was kind of frightening. I have never had that happen before but my weight must have been way towards the rear which caused the issue. I learned an important lesson that time. Don't sit on a log like I did with your backpack on. Take the darn thing off before sitting! John from MI

    OMG.
    Even though this video was much longer than usual I still didn’t want it to end. Epic journey indeed that you both shared and chose to share with us.
    Breathtaking views along with close up details (flowers, spiderweb, food 😊, and of course the sheep)made this an incredible video. No matter the weather you managed to make it beautiful and at times very funny indeed. I’ll be watching this video several times I’m sure.
    I’m curious about the history of the area and will certainly be looking into it also.
    Time well spent on my Sunday morning, thank you both you are so very beautiful. 🥰🙏🏻

    Love the video. Update on me and the AT: I got off the AT after 3 days. The heat for me was too intense and there were no water sources in MD where I was. Water was only available at the shelters so walking 8 miles and climbing mountains with not enough water was unsafe for me. I concluded that for me, taking local overnight hikes makes more sense at my age with my heart issues than hiking the AT. John from MI

    Just catching up after a couple of weeks of computer problems. But oh my -- this was as beautiful and inspiring as I had hoped it would be! So many lakeside views, mountain vistas and waterfalls! It is like the best of the entire AT, concentrated into 96 miles. And you had pretty good weather (it is Scotland, after all) except for the last couple of days. I could tell you were genuinely having a great time, because you could not wipe the smile off your face.

    Your videos are always beautiful but you really outdid yourself again…. Absolutely amazing to come along with you both on this fantastic adventure! And the joy in your faces, I am so happy you had such an amazing time! I really want to do the WHW one day. Those Salted Caramel TREK bars are just divine aren’t they?? The waterfalls looked so beautiful and your campsites looked great too. Sorry about the weather turning on you to climb Ben Nevis, but just a reason to come back right? We did that 4 years ago and also hiked Ben MacDui and Cairn Gorm a couple of days later, I think you’d like those as well (we LOVED MacDui). Thank you for another beautifully created and edited video! 💚💚

  • @pettipaw

    Hi Mary, first thank you for sharing your trip with us. I originally planned to do the WHW with a group of friends this year, staying at B&B's. One of my friends and I decided to cancel, because of various reasons. We are thinking of trying again next May. I live in the US and like to backpack. My friend just recently decided she likes backpacking, and now we are considering doing this as a backpacking trip. I feel comfortable planning backpacking trips in the US but planning a backpacking trip abroad feels more challenging (to me!). I've hiked the Coast to Coast in England, but we stayed in pubs & had a luggage transfer (very easy to plan). I have so many questions! What were your main planning tools for the hike? When wild camping, how do you choose appropriate areas? What are the rules for wild camping there (and try to compare it to trails from a US perspective because I know you hiked the PCT). I'm the world's coldest sleeper. How cold were night's on your trip? If you wanted to stay at a pub/b&b/hostel with a private room, how hard would it be to do that without reserving in advance? I know my friend would like to have a town stop to shower. I'm a vegetarian too - how much food did you bring versus purchase? I'd prefer to not carry more than 4 days of food at a time. Not sure if a resupply box is possible there? When I backpack, I always have a down puffy (mountain hardwear ghost whisperer) and a down sleeping bag (20 degree bag, though I just purchased an even warmer bag because I get too cold). Do you use down gear there or synthetic - so much rain!

    • @MarysOutdoorAdventures
      @MarysOutdoorAdventures  2 года назад

      Hi Lynn,
      Apologies for the delayed response - your comment was hiding in the 'to review'. I'm sure you will love this trail and it is so easy to plan. I hope I can help answer some of your questions. I got a book which I used to plan the trip called 'West Highland Way' by Charlie Loram & Joel Newton 2019 edition. Although it was a little out of date, it still had most of the details in it which were correct - but the prices were off somewhat. Ii also used the WHW website for planning as well as checking the permit zones etc.
      Wild camping is legal in Scotland and I basically had a rough mileage plan but stopped at a spot that looked good - just like the PCT really. The only issue is along Loch Lomond which you'll see I covered in my recent WHW Tips video ruclips.net/video/0gkLy1FxG9E/видео.html
      The temperatures at night were actually just perfect as I'm a cold sleeper too - around 10C. It might be possible to find somewhere like a B&B or hostel, but a lot of places were quite fully booked up in advance - although there are AirB&B options too. I'd recommend booking in advance if you think you might need somewhere as otherwise you could end up paying quite high prices due to limited options.
      Food wise I took 3 days worth of food and got the rest along the way - but carried a few emergency ramen packets. Being vegetarian you will be absolutely fine and doubt you would need more than 2 days of food at any given time.
      I only use synthetic, as I am vegan down products are not an option for me.
      I hope that helps 😊

    Is your backpack waterproof Mary as you did not use a raincover with it?

      I've heard it's other name is the Wet Highland Way 😆
      So glad you enjoyed the video Howard. I tried so hard to be accurate with my descriptions by taking screen shots of the mountains on my app after taking the photos/video clips then lining things up to get the right ones. I thought the Buchaille Ative was a little further on which we walked passed the next day but I'm sorry if I was wrong!

      @@MarysOutdoorAdventures No need to be sorry Mary, why I said about Buchaille Ativ Mor was I watched Carl's Outdoors Adventures doing the walk a couple of years ago and he scattered some of his friends ashes near the path coming down to the Glencoe Ski Centre with Buchaille Ativ Mor in the background, he wanted to do the walk again in winter and he did it last winter and visited the spot where he scattered the ashes two years previously, it might be worth you watching that section of his walk Mary, it was quite moving.

    Wonderfull to see your experience. I’m planning to go too! How did your tent handle the continuos rain? I have the same tent and been wondering if it Is suitable for very wet and windy conditions.

    • @MarysOutdoorAdventures
      @MarysOutdoorAdventures  2 года назад

      Thanks sani753, you will really enjoy it as it's a great trail. The tent was great, but I have had it a long time now and it's had a lot of wear. I did re-waterproof it before I left and it kept us dry throughout. It can handle wind to a certain extent but it isn't designed for very strong winds. I have had it in bad winds on the PCT and only once did I incur any issues. One of the guy lines snapped, but I had spare so managed to fix it.

    Hello Mary, just watched your WHW video, so beautifully narrated. I noticed you wore trail runners, how did you find it or would you recommend boots in hindsight ?

    • @MarysOutdoorAdventures
      @MarysOutdoorAdventures  Год назад +1

      Thanks so much Max. I’m a big fan of trail runners and if your used to hiking in them I’d recommend them (but don’t blame me if it rains all the time and your feet get soggy 😆). The trails are good and very little boggy areas which is good for trail runners…but there were a lot of gravel/stones that were uncomfortable underfoot but as long as they have a fairly tough sole I’d say they would be okay.

    I am thinking about doing the West Highland way in September. I use walking poles to climb Munroes. Do you feel they help when hiking on flat ground ? Thanks. oh and what was your backpack weight ? 😁😁

    • @MarysOutdoorAdventures
      @MarysOutdoorAdventures  2 года назад +1

      If you are carrying a heavy backpack I would definitely recommend trekking poles as they really make a huge difference on any terrain. Not only taking away a bit of tension from the knees and keeping balance, but keeping your posture too and avoiding the dreaded backpack hunch.
      My pack weighed in at 24lbs without water. Hope you have an amazing time if you decide to do it in September - my next video will be top tips for the WHW so hopefully that will help you too!

    Another great trip, really enjoyed this one Mary. I was curious to know if transport is an issue getting to the trail and getting back off. I live in Wales so its a long way up for me I'd have to leave my car somewhere and then get back to it after the hike, any idea would be much appreciated 👍 🙂 🌼 🌻 ?

      I did watch a video from a few years ago where a guy left his car outside Milngavie police station (with their permission and they kept an eye on it). That way you could get the train back from Fort William to Glasgow and another to Milngavie. Either that or drive to Fort William and park the car there somewhere, police might advise you where, then get the train to Glasgow and then to Milngavie to start the walk. The train terminates in Milngavie and its only a few hundred yards from the station to the start point...likewise in Fort William the station is about a half mile from the end point. 👍👍

      So pleased you enjoyed it Scam-Proof. I'm filming a video next week with my WHW top tips so I will be sure to include more information on this for you. It's so easy getting to the start - train from Glasgow is direct and only takes 25mins then a few minutes walk to the start of the trail. Getting from Fort William back to Glasgow is either by bus for about £25 or train and takes 3-4 hours. We decided to get the train from the Peak District and not drive as like you I didn't want to leave the car for a week. When I did the Great Glen Way I did do that though and left it in a hotel car park so that might be an option.
