Exactly what I thought that's her own voice styling not an imitation, Even though her doing Billie's voice is extraordinarily on point😍😍. Andra's voice is similar to Amy Winehouses styling and they are both exquisite❤❤.

I loved how Andra Day Jazzed up this song! It’s a modern twist to the way Billie sang it! I think Ms Holiday would be proud! It gets the same reaction it did over 80 years ago.
Billie sang this song a thousand different ways. Depending on her mood. Jazz was her style of choice.
I still think that Beth Hart has the best modern version of this song with the seething anger in her voice. This version is too jazzy as if she went for technical ability rather than the message.

The metaphor behind this is seriously deep.. frightening imagery of what took place back in those days. the song is calming but when u think of the level of violence the writer is referencing that's a paradox within it self... music is powerful it proves that word is not just wind.. words can change the world.. words are information and the information that we receive can make or break us! I have been in love with Ms Day’s voice since the moment I heard it. I was feeling sorry for myself that she hadn’t produced more music for me to purchase and then BAM!!! She makes a movie and a sound track. What a performance in the movie. She channeled Billi more than Ms Ross and I didn’t think that was possible. I stand in awe of Ms day and hope to see her on the big screen again. Thank you for bringing the issue of the Lynching law still being active!! Let us move to get rid of this Law of brutality forever and NOW

Love this woman!! I will never forget hearing this song for assignment in first college history course at 47 years old. We had 6 songs to choose from and write on 3 of them. I'd never heard this song and cried like a baby listening to it several times. It moved my soul when realized what the strange fruit was. Still breaks my heart. Andra Day is awesome & definitely think Billie Holiday would be proud!!!!
