The PERFECT evidence of just how well you have made their habitat. Comfortable enough to breed.
Reproduction isn't always a 100% reliable indicator of how well an animal is being kept (because nature tends to prioritize the production of babies over the parents' health and animals tend to mate even in bad conditions out of instinct.) But the parents look very comfortable and the babies that survived look very healthy! I think that makes for a better indicator of the parents' quality of life than just whether or not there were babies made.
@@rachellee2680 Yes, but most animals still need a minimum of good conditions in order to reproduce. Reproduction takes a lot of energy, so if the parents are too stressed to even keep themselves healthy, they're obviously not going to have offspring. And this is even more important for livebearers because reproduction cost is so much higher for us than for the majority of animals who lay eggs
@@raerohan4241 Not gonna disagree with any of that! I'm not trying to bash on the Snake Discovery crew's reptile-keeping. All I was trying to say was that reproduction ≠ perfect living conditions and the presence of babies doesn't inherently mean everything is fine with the parents. Some animals are still capable of reproducing under stress or malnourishment, but it'll just most likely be to their and their babies' detriment. I just think it's an iffy mindset to see unexpected babies and immediately think "oh, these animals must be so well-taken care of!"
Remember stressbreeding is also a thing!
Perfection
💯
Ed's reaction to the pun was hilarious! She deserves a raise!!
"Yes"
Kim needs a raise!
I hope it would take a whole lot more than a silly joke for him to actually fire her!!
Ed is so funny, I'd love to see a lot more of him on the channel as well as the other employees. I love Emily of course, but she needs her crew!!!
Ed owns the store he can’t get a raise 😀☺️❤️
@@gabbyfilsimenot ed, the one that made the joke lol
Congrats on breeding _another_ new species! 🎉
ETA: I had no idea skinks were live bearers. Emily is always teaching me something new and I greatly appreciate it!
Agreed!
I had no idea either! 😂
I had no idea either, I always learn something new with Emily!❤
Agreed! I love learning new things and seeing things I've never experienced before.
Not all skinks are tho. Even NZ has one native egg laying species Oligosoma suteri. The herpetologist R.Hitchmough showed me one of those in the mid 70s when I was a kid. Now NZ has an invasive egg layer skink from OZ too. The tiny Rainbow/Plague skink.
I love the fact that they had expanded from just snakes to now so many other species! They have grown so much in such little time ☺️
They have grown so much but each animal gets an amazing standard of care still 😊
I also love the fact that all the non snake breeding is simply because the zoo enclosures are so good the animals are breeding on their own (AKA unplanned babies!!!)
@@Michelle_Mayo blue tongues are hard to sex if you aren't very familiar with doing so. It seems like they didn't know they were a m/f pair
The other accidental babies they have had were from enclosures that they knew had opposite genders and were putting together as a "if the breed that's awesome if they don't that's fine" and the surprise we see is partly that it's for entertainment and partly because it's always exciting to get babies.
It's actually uncommon for animals in a zoo setting where there are a lot of people seeing/messing with them often to breed. It's also not terribly common for reptiles that live in the same enclosures year round to breed. They normally need at least some time apart to get the hormones started
And with so much passion still!
When I started watching years ago, they had more than just snakes. They had turtles, a few leachianus geckos ( I might be off on species of geckos but it seems like they were leachies), fish, Rex, Cheyenne. Actually I am not sure if they had Rex yet but I think so, they had their tegu shortly before building the Zoo. I don't think I have ever seen them with just snakes ( even if you don't count Cheyenne).
Yet more surprise babies! You guys have created an environment so relaxing to your reptiles that they just naturally start breeding. That is amazing and awesome!
Being in Australia, I have had the privilege of raising a baby blue tongue... And they grow SUPER FAST!!!! Enjoy the fun team! 🎉❤
Its interesting watching people get excited about exotic species that live in my backyard.
I remember when my cat brought home a Bluie, it was alive, unharmed and apparently super chill about being dragged about.
We just put the little guy in the garden and it was happy to just skedaddle, ofc we kept our cat inside from then on. 😅
@@lepeke I lived with a snake catcher and educator for a few years, so got to see and experience a lot of the scaley locals!
The blue tongue was birthed in the catchers bag and he didn't realise at the time he let the mum go!
So we raised him a bit so he could be used in the education programs so people could see the difference between a blue tongue and a tiger snake... Often they get confused in South Australia lol
I love finding blue tongues in the wild, and also my backyard.
@@lorenehughesWait what?! Are people really too scared to register legs vs no legs?💀
Can we get a proper Sharon update please? It's been a while since you got her and it would be cool to see how she's settled in to the zoo. 🐢
Agreed! I’d love an update on her
Given Rafikis (i think thats what they named him) antics i wouldnt be surprised if they get tortoise babies 🤐
When I visited the zoo in December Sharron was hiding in the Rex cave lmao. Apparently she just hangs out in there
Sharon could have her own shenanigans special episode, just tons of clips of either Sharon doing something weird, being places she shouldn't, or of Ed/Emily/staff explaining a mess/situation by panning to Sharon😅
@@jvseventeen right? I feel like they need to figure out a way to strap a GoPro on her back just so we can join in on her adventures around the facility, maybe even see where her favorite spots are. 😊
Aww!!
One of the perks of a Snake Discovery tour: The possibility of being able to hold a surprise baby in your hands! 😆😆
Agreed
The deadpan delivery of "Kim, you're fired." without Ed even looking up from examining the babies was perfect xD
I received one of these babies a few days ago!! Her name is Tiamat and I'm really enjoying watching her run around all over the place! Thank you guys SO MUCH for the baby and the video! ❤ I've been looking forward to this video for a month now 😍
Ngl I kinda wish you would've kept the name that they gave the babies lol. Especially skink 182.
If its a baby it should be fed cat food while juvenile because of the higher protein count. Theres a channel on here, Reptile Mountain, that has a bunch of videos about bts care. Good luck with your new baby!
hopefully you've changed to cat/kitten food, no fish, no grains, 8 to 10 months change to dog food and feeding 2-3 times a week.
lots of clutter and dirt/coco coir to burrow in.
also be aware these babies are mutts.
@fightingfaerie wouldn't they normally eat small insects in the wild? I was thinking small/pin head crickets would have been more healthy and natural, but I really have no idea. Why wouldn't they eat small crickets?
I have a blue tongue lizard that lives under my house. Her name is Isadora, Izzy the Lizzie. She sun's herself on the front lawn, near the pond in summer when she is pregnant. She brings them to see me just after birth, then they all go their separate ways. I obviously live in Australia 🇦🇺 , where the blue tongues are indigenous. Love your show.
gotta love living here and finding these cool lizards that other places call exotic
It's so nice that you and Izzy have such a good neighborly relationship
I love how Emily was so excited she just kept a ball python in her hand as she was leaving the back after being paged.
A blue tongue gave birth in my garage once and another in my backyard. The babies kept getting in the house through the gap under the door leading into the house from the garage OR they were trying to hide in the drain in the back garden. Seeing as they'd drown in there if it rained I was constantly checking for them all season. Got like 5 babies out of our house and another six out of the drain. Adorable madness.
Those have got to be the cutest blue tongue skinks I have ever seen 😍
2nd
Same
I love the moment when Kim made that joke, and then Ed said Kim you're fired, but Emily contradicated him and told Kim she was getting a promotion
This is totally unrelated, but.....
My husband and I took our ball python to the exotic vet for a checkup today, and the vet complimented us heavily on our husbandry and the body condition of our snake. THANK YOU for everything you guys do! Y'all taught us everything we know about our pythons ❤️
Fun fact, the shingleback skink (also known as the stumpy or walking turd), which is another skink with a blue tongue, give birth to live young.
Parents are monogamous and meet up each year to breed and will raise the babies for several months. It's very cute.
But the baby is so big it's like a person giving birth to a toddler.
I can't wait until summer to see them out and about again.
I love how annoyed Ed looks before she tells him what it is and 100% mood change instantly!
I love Kim and she should definitely be promoted for her puntastic skills
Ed: “Kim- you’re fired”
Emily: “No I liked it! You’re getting a promotion🎉”
Kim: “YESSSSSS🎉🎉🎉”
You know you are doing something right when your animals just breed without you knowing. Lol It just goes to show that you have a great zoo! Congratulations on another new species! 🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤
I always enjoy the text "commentary" you post near the babies to show that they are thinking!
I had no idea skinks were live bearers! How did the momma fit that many babies?!
I was wondering the same, I was also wondering how no one noticed the mom was pregnant...?
@@pandap4ntz, She must have been huge with all those babies in her!
They didn't want to offend her in case she was just fat.
@@litigioussociety4249bahahaha 😂
@@charlottesmom ikr! That's why I'm scratching my head so hard this one, it just doesn't seem like Ed or Emily to not notice something like this... very weird. Maybe she wasn't showing, or maybe the babies were born smaller & grew after they were birthed, like maybe a couple days had passed before anyone noticed the babies...? Idk, things are not adding up for me 🤷♀️
Totally like that you commented on their useless legs. My little boy often decides to just give up on using his back legs. They have such amazing personalities.
Front wheel drive only lol
I love how much you have grown from being in ur kitchen to having a great business it's truly insane I was so scared of snakes and watching ur videos have aloud me to branch out with snakes and I will soon be getting a corn snake
I know I kinda miss the kitchen days but they're doing so well now!
@@robinsonromthey really are I'm proud how much they have grown but do miss the kitchen days aswell of red being in there basement
It’s been pretty cool to watch this channel and their business grow! From Emily on her own in a spare bedroom to a _whole heckin’ zoo!_ It’s amazing! And Ed and Emily are so deserving of all their success. They’re such great ambassadors for reptile keeping. Congrats on getting over your fear and I hope both you and your future corn snake live long and prosper! 🖖
@@Thurston86 i totally agree and I'll be getting her next month as they need to be able to feed and do all the proper thing but I'm super excited
@@Thurston86 I don't really consider accidental breeding to be a success, but yes they have grown a lot. I just wish they didn't have so many "surprise" babies. It's not charming anymore. They need to be more responsible.
You forgot to show us the parents!! You'll have to include that somewhere! 😂 I was a part of that tour! It was an amazing experience and I still don't know what adjectives to use to describe holding a baby blue tongued skink!!
I just re-watched the Bugkin Pie video and after seeing all 3 blue tongued skinks together I have more questions than answers! Are they different varieties or are they different species? Subspecies? I can tell Oprah Skinkfrey is different than your now-parents.
Commenting to boost, and to follow because I too am curious about the differences.
Also, it's super cool you got to be there at that exact moment!
No one tell Emily and Ed that there are different morphs for blue tongues as well xD. Congrats guys on the northern babies my perspective they are some of the best representatives in the blue tongue family ^^
Are they northerns? I can't really tell, and the one in exhibit looked like it might be Indonesian to me. That said, I'm not experienced in blueies lol
They always look so cranky but they are such a chill lizard. We had two really large ones living in the drain at our local school. They loved soft fruits and my mother in law always called me in summer to remove the odd blue tongue from her garden because they would eat her strawberries!
Kevin from NERD says it’s important to socialize them right away as newborns, no quick hand gestures or loud noises to scare them etc. just calm safe handling to get them on the right track of being great pets
That’s incredible guys, congrats!!
well blue tongues are more chill and calm down a lot better than monitors
Aww! Blueys! They ARE live bearers and average around 10 babies per litter. So 8 (7 live & 1 slug) is pretty good! Try blueberries or chunks of strawberries as a treat. They also absolutely LOVE snails. Fun fact, they don't eat the snail shells so are really fun to watch them eating those. Glad they're being housed together as babies, they should thrive better together 😊 they'll feel more secure that way too.
You can tell how unprepared they were, as they didn't remember to show us the proud Momma and Pappa pair, other than when grabbing the babies from the tank! LOL Grats on the new babies!!!
I was always surprised that they managed to keep a pair of blueys together without them trying to murder each other. Them being a male and female explains that lol
The enclosure is also absolutely massive
My old Bluey had one baby and 2 days later had 8 more babies, so 9 total! This was when she gave birth years ago! They're amazing little creatures 😍 so it doesn't suprise me you found more even after doing a full sweep, sometimes it takes them a while to birth them all! Unfortunately back then I was super young and didn't know any better to get her checked for any stuck babies but luckily everyone was born safe and sound and mumma was a happy girl!
Absolutely Stunning Bubby's. As an Australian Reptile keeper. My first reptile was a Eastern Bluey. They are incredible. My boy lived on cat food (not fish, because it can kill them). Mostly beef or chicken, daily greens/fruit (mine loved grapes) & i let half a dozen crickets out in the enclosure so it could get exercise and enrichment.
cat food is for babies, dog food for adults.
I paused this video halfway, said goodbye to my friends as they left to go to a 4th of July bbq, came downstairs, checked on my sick gerbil Nugget, and she had passed. It's been an hour or two of sanitizing everything and disposing of her body, and I'm back, and I can't help but smile at y'all's energy. Thanks for just existing.
Thank you for showing off how even expert breeders can be surprised, and have to throw together something out of what's laying around, to make a good-enough set up to give you time to do more research to figure out how to do it right. A great example of "do not let the perfect be the enemy of the good"! :)
Expert breeders don't tend to have many "surprise" babies, and usually have the setup(s) ready ahead of time. Nevermind that they didn't think to get advice from other breeders BEFORE they were born...
@@Michelle_Mayo You're right - Snake Discovery DOESN'T have many surprise babies. They do plan for over a dozen clutches per year. But mistakes and unexpected, unplanned events DO happen, to everyone, and showing off how to deal with that, imperfectly, is more helpful than pretending it never happened, imo
@@Michelle_Mayoyou're acting like they're irresponsible breeders and don't have the facilities to look after these babies. chill out a bit
@@86fifty like when they threw the spiders together, left, then came back to only the mother and an egg sac. Then left the egg sac with Mom instead of finding out they should've removed it, and chasing a whole bunch of babies down.
Emily's squeaky little "baby" voice is so cute. I'm sure I'll sound just like that if/when my corn snakes make eggs and especially when they hatch ❤ I love the names, especially Jar Jar Skinks
Me: Eating a sanwich.
Emily: So this is a dead blue tongue skink fetus.
Me: I really should have learned my lesson by now.
As a fan of many years it brings so much joy seeing how well the zoo is doing with breeding
I love that everything is comfortable enough to breed and I LOVE that the staff is cool with filming for you n with you. You should challenge them to make an entire video on their own if they’re all comfortable with it. Would love to see that. As much as we love Emily and Ed the rest of the crew is loved and appreciated as well 🥰
Oh my goodness. I remember when my skink Ahsoka was that tiny. They are such a pretty chocolate brown at that age. I love the spicy ones, they are so cute. I'm lucky Ahsoka was/is pretty chill. Though lately she's been pretty feisty, attacking the door when I go to feed her lol.
My daughter is heading to college this year and wanted to take our crestie with her as an ESA. (She approved for a reptile.) Now since we do have to pay a percentage her scholarship doesn’t cover, I told her that a new skink would be a stretch for me to get in a month with all housing it properly needs. Then your video showed up this morning! Everywhere we turn it’s blue tongued skinks. They are haunting our lives so now I hope to get one of these little potatoes at Schaumburg! Your post was quite timely! Thanks a lot? We love your channel!
I've been having a really rubbish mental health day and I freaking LOVE blue tongues, these have cheered me right up! So cute and they looks nice and healthy, daww.
Blue-tongued skinks are my absolute favorite lizard; they're just so adorable and chonky! It's too bad one didn't manage to make it, but I'm glad there are five healthy babies!
I found a garder snake doing yard work one day and it made me super happy, I picked it up carefully and put it back properly (thanks to your herping vids) and now I know there are snakes here!
They're so adorable! Especially their "don't eat me" tongue and mouth display. 😂♥️
So heckin cute!!!
Congrats on having a proven pair! Next batch of baby skinks, it would be great if you could highlight the parents and go over their gestation length ❤
If they even know... I mean, no one finds it weird they only contacted other breeders AFTER the babies were born?? 🤔
@@Michelle_Mayo They didn't think that baby skinks would be coming anytime soon, and why would they randomly contact skink breeders out of the blue asking for advice on an animal they didn't have or were expecting soon?
@@jacobestradajr8541 they put a male and a female together. They should've prepared for the possibility. Learn about gestation period, husbandry for babies, mom's after care, etc before the babies arrive

Lol, yall uploaded a video right after I just about had a panic attack because of a snake swimming right past my foot in the lake. Just got my hands to stop shaking
They are so cute and fierce already.
For all who may have missed it, YT proposed me last week a video from The Jason Show where Emily is presenting snakes to the host, Jason. It was pretty fun 😂
"A reptile dysfunction." I AM DEAD! 😂😂😂 I love your little subtitles so much.
Hi from Western Australia!! 🇦🇺
It’s so cool to see your blue tongues thriving and breeding 😍
I’m amazed at how tame your adults are, the wild ones here just go to defense mode immediately lol 😂
About 2 years ago my Jack russel mix would do a quiet “boof” at this clump of grass whenever I took him out to the yard, after about 5 days I thought I’d better check what was in there, and it was a juvenile blue tongue! ❤
I guess my dog and the little bluey made an arrangement to leave each other alone 😂🤷🏻♀️
I managed to catch it fairly easily and got in contact with a local reptile rescue through facebook, the picked him up and released him back into the bush with another juvenile that had been rescued as well!❤
I was so stoked that they took him because I live in the CBD and he would’ve gotten killed if I just released him around here or left him in my yard.
Awesome job, guys! 👌🏽😊
Where is CBD?
@@lilstarduke4119city business district, usually refers to the capital of wherever they live but not always, means central city pretty much
@skeleletonboi4533 nice, good to know. Thank you for the information.
I've been binging Snake Discovery for the past 3 months (even watching the same vids 3+ times). Kinda funny how a new one just came out when I was watching 6 oldies already (again) haha
they’re ovoviviparous??!! y’all always teaching me something new 😌
I love the name Skinkerbell. I would so name of of the babies that name. The babies are so cute. I love them so much already. You should definitely keep one.
I really love how much Ed melts over the babies of all kinds!
I really REALLY wanna know what the last two babies were named because I was DYING during the naming process.
The little angry blehs! 😍😂
I mean, you've definitely gotta understand where they're coming from- if we were picked up by gigantic weird creatures making strange noises at us, we'd probably have a whole lot of fear too! 😳😳
My grandpa has a type of these skinks just in his backyard chilling, he’s also got iguanas, morning doves, crows, snakes, don’t get me started on teh hawks and Guinea fowls. All wild, they just stay there and wake me up at 6 in the morning.
How fun to read all the Australian blue tongue comments! My cousin fed his blue tongues raw egg and raw ground beef! Every couple of years I have a wild pair come into my yard for a couple days, always cool to watch.
The skins look bigger in the video than in person
Also cool seeing myself in the background of the video
I love all the new eggs and babies being made. You guys have really made my life so much more enjoyable and exciting 😊
We had a pair of Blue Tongues who lived in the front garden for many years when I was a kid.
They used to rid the garden of snails too.
As an Aussie who gets these guys show up in the garden weekly in summer, this made me smile! Have fun with them! Blueys are very cheeky!
Sharon is the manager, of course she has keys and codes to every door 😉
Congrats on babies! glad the parents are doing good well also! One mom can have over 20 babies but not super common
I like how Ed doesn’t gasp he just goes “WOAAAH” or “WOW”
A great way to enjoy a tour! "Here, hold this" 😂
The people who were on the tour are going to remember this for the rest of their lives
D'AAAAWWWWW!!! I can hardly wait until mine have babies - My girl is decidedly NOT interested right now though (Because it is winter here in Australia - I'll be putting them together more seriously in September/October). Oh, and yeah, don't let the 'juvenile' status fool you! My Male was already trying to make moves on my female when he was still only 9 months old himself! (He was already pushing 45cm long by then, and my vet confirmed that he was 'big enough' for it to be a possibility).
And 5 is actually a pretty small litter considering the average is probably about 10-12, and the record is (if I recall correctly) 23!
I love blueys. They are like the Dachshund of lizards. :D
They're native to my country, I relocate them in summer. Babies are the fuckin cutest, found one in a woodheap and took it back out bush (person had a dog so it would have been eaten).
I love these babies! Such spunky little guys!
Emily said they're tiny, but I feel like that was a lot of baby to fit into one adult skink belly 😅
I did not expect the adult Sinks to be that BIG!😍
I love them🙂
I just love their "BLECH!" blue tongue attitudes!
I had no idea skinks were live bearers, thank you Emily for teaching me things I will probably actually use in life (unlike school) 😂❤
Emily I've been watching you vids for 1 year now and you vids I use to be afraid of snakes and you helped me conquered that fear and you helped me hold a ball python at a reptile expo and know all about reptiles and thank you for everything you do for us 🙏🏼
Same here. I am 62. Got my first reptile about 4 yrs ago. An albino corn snake. I now have 2 crested geckos, a ball python, a tortoise, and a bearded dragon. I got to meet Ed at a reptile show. I was able to thank him and Emily for the knowledge they gave me through their videos. My daughter is following my footsteps and she has a blue tongue skink, as well as many other reptiles. ❤
@@JoMamaLuvsReptiles that's cool
I love how you just immediately start handing babies to people on a tour 😂 like, “oh, you’re here so might as well help and get an even cooler experience!”
This says a lot about their animal care and habitat build.
So many of their animals are breeding in their enclosures.
I know you have probably seen this but you should get some colored cards to put behind anything (Mainly lavenders) To contrast the color and to make it more visible to the camera : D
(Also congrats on the babies!!)
That's actually a clever thought!
Or they could put up a picture comparison of what they actually look like, in editing
I don't know if they already have, but a blue tongue skink care guide would be cool.
Feels good when an animal looks at what you gave them and says “yep, seems good enough for baby”
These guys live in the park across the road from me, as well as bobtails. They often turn up in my garden and are very sassy when they're wild. They do like fruit and vegetables a lot!
Those babies are so skinkin' cute!! 😁
Absolutely adorable small babies!
I found this video really interesting because I live in Tasmania and we have blue-tongues at our cabin occasionally, they really like to sun themselves on our driveway - I didn't know they bore live young! Super cool

The babies are sooooooo cute ❤❤❤
How could you not notice that ALL that was inside your lizard?!😂 She must've been massive last week, or whenever before this was filmed.
Exactly.
They are naturally chunky animals. Maybe they just didn’t notice as breeders usually weigh them to see if they are pregnant or not. Since they weren’t trying to breed them, they weren’t weighing them.
Apparently skinks are notoriously hard to accurately sex, so it's VERY possible they assumed or were told both of the adults were the same sex. So no real reason to watch for it.
6:59 would make such a good pin or merch design! its just a little baby protecting his food.
It shows how happy the animals are in your zoo, that they are happy to hreed
Skinks have the most judgemental look ever! I love it!!! 😂
