- That this paean to the type of mindless fan who "knows not what it means" appeared on the album that would eventually catapult Nirvana into the white-hot center of alternative rock is an almost too-delicious irony - especially since, as Novoselic told Rolling Stone's David Fricke in 2001, "it sounded like a Bad Brains song" in its earliest incarnations. But Cobain's workshopping of the track led to its triumphant summing up of what made Nirvana so captivating - morose and surrealistic lyrics married to power chords and gleefully turned-out harmonies.

The In Bloom solo is the defining moment of grunge -- the dissonance, the total disregard for traditional structure, the violence, the despair, and the finale punctuated by the crashing chords -- I first heard this as a 21-year-old in college and thought, Huh, are they playing my beloved punk rock on the radio? No, but it's not heavy metal. It was simply perfect -- the natural evolution from Sonic Youth, but more melodic than that band.
For me, it's Nirvana's finest moment.
It was like a transition from punk to metal ............the grunge line, the bridge that separates two big giants from collapsing!
I never really thought about that until now because guitar solos never particularly struck me the way the riffs usually do but I think the way everything clashes in perfect harmony here probably makes this my fav song of all time
