This shows that Thanos knew he had to kill Stark to succeed because the fact that Tony always learns from his mistakes. The same with the ship at the start of the movie. The truth, all I have to do is sit here and watch as the world will consume you." This quote makes sense now more than it did in Iron Man 2, when he made Thanos bleed.
