if you don't want to carry your rock hammer, go to a store like Home Depot or Lowes and in the garden center find a dandelion puller tool. It looks like a handled spike with a v shaped blade on the end. It's light weight but would work well for digging out the rocks.

I have one of those. I added a line on it and clip so I could clip it to my pants. It doesn’t bother me a bit and my hands are free. But it’s right there if needed. I got a husky brand from Home Depot. I love my rock hammer but I love that tool more. My son thought it was a big screwdriver.

I love your channel. Discovered your video on the black hills Rockhound Area recently and you got me to get off my old, out of shape butt and head out there. It was so much fun. If I had found your channel when I was young I'd probably be a geologist like you. Your channel is inspiring, fun, and so interesting. Thank you.

a great quote...once you get an eye for what your looking for, it starts to appear...I learned this when looking for chantrelle mushrooms....never had gone for them before, no idea what to look for in regards to them...my gf showed me what to look for in regards to area, other shrooms about, etc. We harvested a great amount of chantrelles that day once I knew what to look for...great piece of advice

It IS petrified wood. Much of the red minerals at Yellow Cat are silified wood. It is hard to find since the whole area has been picked over for so many years.

My OCD was making me scream inside when you dumped all of your finds on to the gravel for cleanup. I kept thinking "Elley! How are you going to separate them again and o.m.g. what if they get mixed up and geeeze your gonna lose the little ones...". Finally, figuring that you have probably done this once or twice before, I calmed down and realized that I too have done the exact same thing and survived.

You need to make another try at yellow cat. It looks like you didn't get to any of the really good spots. There Are spots where you can get the agate/calcedony such as you were finding plus black and white petrified wood, massive agatized barite (looks like petrified wood), mud balls (which are agatized septarians), Agate replaced barite balls (bright red agate) and other possibilities all with less walking than what you did.

@lylelayh We are going to Yellow Cat for the first time this weekend. Any help finding Chalcedony, Agates & Jasper would be appreciated. Not familiar with the area. So highways, dirt road name's, landmarks, etc would be helpful.
      Thanks!
