It seems very interesting that the origins of the Witness mirror the very same struggles Zavala has been going through for some time. Zavala, once a pillar of devotion to the Light and the tenants of being a Guardian, now finds himself shouldering so much doubt and confusion in response to the Traveler being utterly silent and largely inactive. First, it was the slow realization that the universe isn't as black and white as we initially believed, and that the Darkness is as much a tool as the Light. Then it was the revelation of Savathun and her brood being blessed with the Light by the Traveler. Add on his grief for Amanda Holliday's death, and her not being resurrected (yet) when she was someone who was certainly worthy of being a Guardian, and you have a Zavala at his lowest point of confidence in his mission, becoming more and more frustrated and melancholy by the Traveler's silence and lack of guidance, the same feelings that plunged the Witness fully into Darkness to the point of completely rejecting the Traveler as a source of chaos and pain in the universe. Everyone, including Zavala and the Witness, is trying to understand what the meaning of everything is, and they once looked to the Traveler for answers, only to be met with silence. With the Witness launching a crusade against the Traveler, fueled by spite, rage and hatred, the question then becomes what Zavala will do instead. What meaning will he carve out for himself? Will he adopt similar views as the Witness and reject the Traveler? Or something else? Time will tell. Zavala has always been the pillar of what being a Guardian meant, and his journey and struggles are testaments to our own evolution as Guardians. The fate of Zavala will be such a major defining moment, especially as we near the end of the road.
i think it’s info that The Witness is an entire civilization that was uplifted by the traveler. they all fused into one being The Witness. They tried to connect the veil to the traveller to start the final shape which is resetting the universe in there image
You know, considering how royally pissed off (if misguided) someone such as Eramis got about the Traveler, it's not hard to imagine someone (in this case, the Witness) getting even more angry about slights, real or imagined.
Did anyone notice that the ships that were searching the wreckage of the ship the titan was using at the start were M3-D1 Valkyrie units? Exotic ships from Season of the Splicer.
Seeing the leaks weeks early, then seeing people speculate about what's happening is truly a strange feeling. I think people will either be super happy or super meh'd by the Witness' backstory.
Especially when they speculate correct about imething that they could only infer after seeing the leaks too, Byf has seen the same thing he has to have, it's his livelihood to be prepared for lore.
I really really liked the explanation in the leaked cutscene. Very philosophical in nature and a direct parallel to how a lot of people view the universe/religion.
16:40 I think the thing we'll be learning might be that, despite Savathun's commentary being seemingly contradictory, they might both be true from some perspectives. For example, the Witness giving birth or being birthed by the Darkness could both be true. They seem to be mutually exclusive and totally incompatible with each other, unless you consider a different perspective. What if the people the Witness came from were some of, if not the first sentient, intelligent species to exist in the universe, and they stumbled across the Darkness in some limited, primordial fashion and decided to embrace it. The Witness was born from that in the sense of gaining a new purpose, to bring about the Final Shape, and the Darkness was born from the Witness by it unleashing it on the universe? In that same way, perhaps the Witness' people were blessed by the Light and the Traveler, pushing their species into a technological utopia, and then at some later point in time they were also "blessed" by the Darkness, corrupting them into producing the omnicidal Witness. Which, as a fellow Warhammer fan, has me thinking they might have gone down the path of the Eldar as they birthed Slaanesh. Interesting stuff.
No The Witness is an entire civilization that was uplifted by the traveler. they all fused into one being The Witness. They tried to connect the veil to the traveller to start the final shape which is resetting the universe in there image
@I can't think of anything I think that's incredibly specific... but I guess it would explain the empty ships all being controlled by the one thing, and the whole "we/us/our" thing
It’s kind of fascinating that Ahsa and Zavala called the Traveler a “Silent God” he did in season of the haunted which was the second season in WQ and this time was also called “silent God” in the second season of an expansion.
MY MAN BYF!!!!!! the altar of Reflection bits FACINATED me in Witch queen... there were even bits about how the relic on mars might be a time machine of sorts... I'm SO happy you're finally covering the extra dialog from those missions... SOOOO many things and directions to go with this game from that info alone... I do feel like the witness was blessed by the light, think about that rage, How mad would you be if someone turned your friends and family against each other? How about if they armed them to the teeth to do so? Furious... How could it just swoop in and change everything like that... and then leave... I think when the witness saw Rhulk, saw the Hive gods, and saw Eramis... it saw its own pain and the ill of the traveler, further intrenching its Anger
Just had a thought about the two lies and truths, “the taken king will return” and looking at the new dungeon seems like that one may not be true now considering everything that’s happened. Thank you for reading
Interesting that you were reminded of 40K in the intro cutscene as well. It reminded me more of a phenomenon prevalent in lore surrounding the era of the Horus Heresy, known as a ‘teleport mishap’ in which the technology used to teleport Space Marines and other forces malfunctions and cannot acquire a solid lock on the location targeted for teleportation. The result is very similar to what our Titan friend experienced in the intro, with limbs and torsos half-submerged in walls and floors.
I don't know who needs to see this, but anyone who was expecting a continuation of the Veil Questline that launched last week, go back to veil contaiment from the map launcher and there are two new logs you can decrypt, nothing on the map or quest screen shows that there is new stuff is happening there.
Itd be crazy if savathun never lied to us. Like the first time we went to the alter, she told us a phew lies on purpose to make us think she'll tell us more lies on other visits. But then tells us only truths after the 1st visit
In terms of Asha’s week one dialogue, it may be referring to Rhulk and his kind as the first victims of the Witness. After all, Rhulk is the first disciple of the Witness.
By the way, I don't know if anyone has pointed this out yes, but Ahsa also has flecks of taken energy on its hide(?). They're small, but there are 2 distinct spots of negative space on her, one above hee eye and one on the right of her eye
Something i noticed and think we should pay attention to... Look at Asha, notice the 2 small taken looking spots. One above her eye slightly to the left, the other next to her eye on the far right... there was no additional spots nor growth after this weeks mission conclusion... So... 1) either its a break in the character model. 2) Asha is slowly being taken like Sloan and something we might want to be concerned about.
In the term of warhammer its more in teleporting from ships for deep strike and when ship to ship boarding you can materialise in a wall . I love 40k I’ve read like 166 books. It’s epic
Show this video to me in 2014 and I just wouldn't believe you byf, although lightfall gave us no answers I believe and am basically just optimistic that the seasonal content will get us right up to the final shape. Season 24+ will be cemented in destiny history as the conclusion so the stories being told now will either be outdone or lost to time (defiance) and I for one am happy to have grown up playing this game. I started my guardian/s in fifth grade; on two seperate xbox accounts as my parents were not together and were not sharing accounts, and I will complete the final shape as a sophomore in college. This game and its lore are one of my main inspirations in becoming a developer, as I also want to create something that lasts after I'm gone. I have watched your videos to go to sleep, on a road trip, in the background, etc... since 2014. Thank you for what you do.
This is something I realized while watching this video, but has nothing to do with the video. Have you noticed how important the sunsetted locations were? Mars held the location of Rasputin and the information for The Veil. Titan held the location of Ahsa and Oryx's body. What if these locations were taken for a reason. Obviously, we know Bungie sunsetted them to reduce the game bulk, but what if all of them were given an important reason to disappear. That makes me wonder what Mercury and Io could be hiding.
interesting i think it’s cus The Witness is an entire civilization that was uplifted by the traveler. they all fused into one being The Witness. They tried to connect the veil to the traveller to start the final shape which is resetting the universe in there image
Well, we know Io was the location of the Pyramidion and the last place the Traveler touched before the Collapse. There was also a Rasputin bunker on Io too, if I remember correctly.
There's a lore tab this season that HEAVILY implies Ahsa is a Worm God before they were converted into Worm Gods. it mentions Fundament and "Siblings turned rivals". Sloane even flat out mentions that worm gods were something before they were worm gods and Ahsa says she was hunted as a traitor. So while it doesn't directly state she is a worm god, it's all but confirmed
1:20 was the Phili experiment that moving with the astronauts? There was a movie like that where a lady got fused with some of the internal wiring of the ship. Not lethal, they were removed with surgery-but god it was nightmare fuel
Loved the conversation between Saladin and Saint…it was awesome 😂 The idea that the witness might have been uploaded by the Traveler at one point, and given his power now, might explain why we have Ghosts, to grant us the abilities but to also temper our connection, because we are reliant on something for our life and power
Minor spoilers (although you can literally see the thing I’m about to say in the game at the minute) Kelgorath is becoming the new Taniks, what is this the 4th time he’s came back although now he’s taken instead of being a dark blade.
The nictitating membrane on Ahsa's eye proves that's she's looking at us with her right eye. Can't wait for Week 3's Deep Dive, with a Taken Kelgorath.
Byf mentioning the obliterators and 40k makes me want him to atart covering 40k lore as well. Can you imagine what it would be like to have a collab between Byf and Luetin?
40k also has another closer analogue to the poor Titan's fate - Teleportation accidents. If you get teleported into a bulkhead or rock or whatever, you are fused with it. This is actually weaponized by Orks, sending grots through teleporters right into enemy's bodies, armour, etc.
Did the pyramid ship fleet show up at Titan during the collapse to fight Ahsa or us? Given the Final Shape trailer, I feel that the Oasis is the inside of the Traveler itself. Everyone who has died in the Light is in there, waiting to flood out and battle the Witness.
@4:45 did you see the slightly jerky movements of Sloane when she says she always completes the mission. Really hope she's not too far gone to save 🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾
I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought of the Philadelphia Experiment. Can we talk about the lore tabs associated with this season's armor? While it details Sloane's survival it also shows how far Ghosts will go to protect their charges. Siochain, or however it's spelled, armed itself with shaving razors and even cut through a mess of Thralls. I want that as a Ghost Shell.
"In the Light, these beings found power and knowledge, but they were not content. Power and knowledge turned to greed and despair." - Bungie, on the Destiny community, probably.
I am sure now my theory of a timeline split at the red war is at play here. People forget we had a cut scene of the fucking sun exploding and VO talking about how we were too late, but funny thing is we did some shenanigans with Vex gates that expansion too, and if you go back and look at Cayde 6 his armor changes colors fucking randomly in that campaign, welp the new cayde we just saw had that same random armor color change, because he is prolly going back in time to stop the sun from splodin in the red war. That would mean we have a universe with a sun, and a timeline with no sun, legend of zelda style, but hopefully no random third timeline. A lot of what we are seeing helped me understand how humanity and life could go on without actual light though, and it is an ugly thing.
Byf I don't know if you already do or if you'll see this but there's more Veil lore on Neptune. Check the map and you'll see a mission called Veil Containment
I think its worth noting, the alters have 2 types, the 2 lies 2 truths, and then an expansion on each lie and truth. Some of the second type contradict because theyre just explanations of contradictions in the 2 lies 2 truths. Just thought that was worth mentioning
I thought the Titan fusing was a pretty clear reference to the Glykon and its dives into the Deep. "Gly's in a bad way after the dive: all twisted. I'm all twisted."
I've actually been wondering if tbe witness isn't tied to the society of the dark with the gestalt consciousness from the Root of Nightmares book. But this new lore has been mind blowing.
As someone as who saw the leaked cutscene explaining the Witness's origins, hearing Byf talk during this video, I'm here like "ugh if only you knew..."
Mention of sand/deserts came up number of times whenever Nine was involved: - At the end of the Prophecy dungeon, when Emmissary trolls Drifter showing him visions of only Light and only Dark worlds, she used phrase "Your feet find purchase in shifting sands". I believe even the description of those worlds was sort of "desertish" - Back when Gambit Prime was a thing, the Reckoning mission was set in dimension created inside that thing hauled by the Derelict (so it was Nine's creation). The dimension was essentially a vast, bleached out desert. Couple that with Eris and Drifter's remarks about the Leviathan during Season of Arrivals, symbol on Drifter's coin, and suddenly the idea of Ahsa being one of the Nine is super tempting, at least to me...
That titan that fused with his ship... Event Horizon al over, WE DONT NEED EYES WHERE WERE GOING. Then again no way that movie is not a 40k Prequel as in Warp drive without Gellershields,
Just realised that Sloan says about needing better diving equipment to help boost the connection before Drifter had discovered the Egrigore on the sea floor, as a player we know that its probably going to revolve around going into the deep but as a character how does she know this? what's to say the stuff we need isn't on nessus/another random location or that we already have everything required it just takes putting it together, just find a bit odd that she somehow already knows that Titan is the seasonal location so it couldn't possibly be anywhere else (without knowing specifically that its Egrigore as didn't Titan disappear in season of the hunt and we didn't come across Egrigore until "Chosen" the following season, I realise this is a minor thing but it does make it a little confusing as to the timeline and what information people should and shouldn't know. Edit: also after the first psychic connection she says that she can understand the noise and Stated hearing it after her new paint job (meaning becoming part Taken) yet in the intro part with Zavala and Drifter she says that it got harder to understand since the Taken stuff, so which is it? could she hear before and being Taken made it harder, or was it being Taken that allowed her to understand in the first place, I feel like it's the first option given the explanation of becoming Taken to listen in on the comms and that the "paint job" sentence is just a slip up on the narrative as she then says "it hasn't sounded that real since..." which I assume is referring to the being Taken so she's basically saying "I started hearing it when I became part taken but also it hasn't been that clear since I became taken" which is just a a straight up contradiction is it not? though as Byf said the "since..." could be referring to an encounter with Xivu/the Hive of some sort
Bah, I should have watched the whole thing before I started writing. I assumed this week had the new cinematic based on the title, so I was launching from that. Watch out, people who avoid spoilers. There is a leaked cinematic based threat lurking. You'll know when you see it in game. In the meantime, this discussion is one huge danger zone for tempting having info from it dropped on you sooner than you might have wanted.

Shame that lance is gone. I only hope that he voiced the full patch cycle in advance.
Ahsa gave us a clue for sure, something that could save us hides buried under the sand but question is what could that be and where as well

Guys. I think it's the Icebreaker.
@@bobthedopeman7327 I wish we were that lucky.
i think it’s info that The Witness is an entire civilization that was uplifted by the traveler. they all fused into one being The Witness.
Really cool detail that they added that!
This is starting to feel a lot like the dark souls community’s favorite phrase: “This is all Gwyn’s Fault”
Seeing the leaks weeks early, then seeing people speculate about what's happening is truly a strange feeling. I think people will either be super happy or super meh'd by the Witness' backstory.
Depends on how much they flesh out post cutscene.
I saw the leak too. I hate that even Bungies explanations makes zero sense and are hard to understand
@@cgpxae2119 How did you not understand? I and many others did
16:40 I think the thing we'll be learning might be that, despite Savathun's commentary being seemingly contradictory, they might both be true from some perspectives.

@@MelancholicBodhisattva no it’s a speculation bro don’t worry
@@MelancholicBodhisattva i think that’s why the pyramid ships are empty because the entire civilization is one person what do you thin k
@I can't think of anything I think that's incredibly specific... but I guess it would explain the empty ships all being controlled by the one thing, and the whole "we/us/our" thing
I have to say, Deep Dives are one of the coolest seasonal activities, the secrets, the combat, the little water zones...
Super cool.
The nomadic Tride in the sands of hope- That's Rhulk
It’s kind of fascinating that Ahsa and Zavala called the Traveler a “Silent God” he did in season of the haunted which was the second season in WQ and this time was also called “silent God” in the second season of an expansion.
I wish Bungie hid important cutscenes in the code better. This whole season’s reveal was spoiled already
I love the implication of history between Sloane and Drifter. I hope we get even more of that.
Just had a thought about the two lies and truths, “the taken king will return” and looking at the new dungeon seems like that one may not be true now considering everything that’s happened.
Thank you for reading
I am just kind of amused by the moment of panic Byf probably had with Drifter rather quickly going "Anyway, transmat firing!"
There was a leaked cutscene for later on that explains the origins of the witness.
I don't know who needs to see this, but anyone who was expecting a continuation of the Veil Questline that launched last week, go back to veil contaiment from the map launcher and there are two new logs you can decrypt, nothing on the map or quest screen shows that there is new stuff is happening there.
Great video once again! Thanks for sharing your insight! I love it how you are always able to draw links to past lore
Itd be crazy if savathun never lied to us. Like the first time we went to the alter, she told us a phew lies on purpose to make us think she'll tell us more lies on other visits. But then tells us only truths after the 1st visit
And that would be fun because in that case 2 lies 2 truths would still contain one lie which is her stating that half of those facts are false lol
In terms of Asha’s week one dialogue, it may be referring to Rhulk and his kind as the first victims of the Witness. After all, Rhulk is the first disciple of the Witness.
Asha mentions sand, maybe the witness comes from a desert world like the area in prophecy's middle when your chasing the kell?
Ahsa is describing the witnesses home-world and backstory
Byf talking about 40k is amazing. You could definitely do some awesome videos on it.
"And I always complete the mission." Seems like foreshadowing.
In the term of warhammer its more in teleporting from ships for deep strike and when ship to ship boarding you can materialise in a wall . I love 40k I’ve read like 166 books. It’s epic
The portal is not in the Traveller, right? It's in front of it based on all the images I've seen.
I have watched your videos to go to sleep, on a road trip, in the background, etc... since 2014. Thank you for what you do.
after watching the leaked cut scene about the witness all of this makes so much sense and i’m loving it
This is something I realized while watching this video, but has nothing to do with the video.
The Trials and Tribulations lorebook indicates that Mercury has some pretty concerning tech that’s tuned to Guardian deaths.
@@icantthinkofanything2006 and I think you are pretending to be a prophet, but really only watched a leak and are spoiling it for others. Stop.
@@Dr_Sparks_ no dude you got me misunderstood idek what you’re on about
God Haberkon fucking *nails* it as Drifter every time he shows up. Even then this season's intro quest was a cut above
Thanks for the post Byf 🎉
1:20 was the Phili experiment that moving with the astronauts? There was a movie like that where a lady got fused with some of the internal wiring of the ship. Not lethal, they were removed with surgery-but god it was nightmare fuel
Loved the conversation between Saladin and Saint…it was awesome 😂 The idea that the witness might have been uploaded by the Traveler at one point, and given his power now, might explain why we have Ghosts, to grant us the abilities but to also temper our connection, because we are reliant on something for our life and power
Minor spoilers (although you can literally see the thing I’m about to say in the game at the minute)
Kelgorath is becoming the new Taniks, what is this the 4th time he’s came back although now he’s taken instead of being a dark blade.
And then in a future season,
He will become a Lightbearer
as someone who has seen the leaks these videos are so fun to watch
What if the witch Queen's lies were that She's actually telling the truth? and she only told us there were two lies.
i think the silent god part is the gardener inside the traveler. a new journey begins as the sky darkens, its the witness inside the traveller
There is a leaked cs about the witness' origin and how it came to be. Without spoilers we are in the right track discovering and speculating
Prepared to be blown away mr byf as the story progresses.
40k also has another closer analogue to the poor Titan's fate - Teleportation accidents. If you get teleported into a bulkhead or rock or whatever, you are fused with it. This is actually weaponized by Orks, sending grots through teleporters right into enemy's bodies, armour, etc.
Thanks 4 all the hard work.
Its nice to see you unravel the story slow each week
Did the pyramid ship fleet show up at Titan during the collapse to fight Ahsa or us?
Given the Final Shape trailer, I feel that the Oasis is the inside of the Traveler itself. Everyone who has died in the Light is in there, waiting to flood out and battle the Witness.
I don’t really think it came for anyone other than the Traveler, but we all just got in its way unluckily
Ahsa definitely is a red herring on how we get taken as a class. It's been hinted at since Europa and now we see the beginning of how it's possible
The thing Sloan mentions in the telepathic possession sounds like the tale of Rhulk
Byf reads 40k lore-
"Never before have I needed something so bad, and not known till I received it."
I've seen the spoiler cutscene, I won't spoil anything but it's WILD lore wise. Like HUGE revalations
Every time I hear that initial dialog with Sloane it grows more sinister.
That Titan in the intro throws me off. One of my Titan's glams is the wrecked version of that armor from D2 Vanilla in Black and White.
Byf I don't know if you already do or if you'll see this but there's more Veil lore on Neptune. Check the map and you'll see a mission called Veil Containment
Along the second weeks dungeon, there are shattered ghosts holding xivu Araths musings of before her and her sisters became the Hive.
now imagine if this was in the expansion and didn't come 3 months after it dropped
Sometimes things are in plain sight.. Whats the deal with the smoke or whatever that is coming out of the Witness head?
I've actually been wondering if tbe witness isn't tied to the society of the dark with the gestalt consciousness from the Root of Nightmares book. But this new lore has been mind blowing.
"nomads and sand " reminds me of that leaked cutscene about the witness
As someone as who saw the leaked cutscene explaining the Witness's origins, hearing Byf talk during this video, I'm here like "ugh if only you knew..."
I knowww its almost painful, watching the cutscene almost makes these videos unwatchable 😅
Mention of sand/deserts came up number of times whenever Nine was involved:
- At the end of the Prophecy dungeon, when Emmissary trolls Drifter showing him visions of only Light and only Dark worlds, she used phrase "Your feet find purchase in shifting sands". I believe even the description of those worlds was sort of "desertish"
- Back when Gambit Prime was a thing, the Reckoning mission was set in dimension created inside that thing hauled by the Derelict (so it was Nine's creation). The dimension was essentially a vast, bleached out desert.
Couple that with Eris and Drifter's remarks about the Leviathan during Season of Arrivals, symbol on Drifter's coin, and suddenly the idea of Ahsa being one of the Nine is super tempting, at least to me...
Ahsa is a proto worm, the lore is in a ghost shell
@@Zwachhiee yeah, watching Byf's recent video rn, and my disappointment is great. I hope at least that the Nine still plays some role in Ahsa story

I'm not going to spoil any story beats, but I do want to say that the witness' origin has been leaked. It's very interesting to say the least
Last thing I was expecting with a 40K reference from byf.
Never heard of the Philadelphia experiment until just now
Just realised that Sloan says about needing better diving equipment to help boost the connection before Drifter had discovered the Egrigore on the sea floor, as a player we know that its probably going to revolve around going into the deep but as a character how does she know this? what's to say the stuff we need isn't on nessus/another random location or that we already have everything required it just takes putting it together, just find a bit odd that she somehow already knows that Titan is the seasonal location so it couldn't possibly be anywhere else (without knowing specifically that its Egrigore as didn't Titan disappear in season of the hunt and we didn't come across Egrigore until "Chosen" the following season, I realise this is a minor thing but it does make it a little confusing as to the timeline and what information people should and shouldn't know.
Well, what Savathun said here matches perfectly with the leaked cutscene.
I think it’s pretty clear all these messages from Sloan are just piecing together into that’ll lead up to that leaked cutscene of the witness’ origins
Thanks for the video glhf
Bah, I should have watched the whole thing before I started writing. I assumed this week had the new cinematic based on the title, so I was launching from that.
Watch out, people who avoid spoilers. There is a leaked cinematic based threat lurking. You'll know when you see it in game. In the meantime, this discussion is one huge danger zone for tempting having info from it dropped on you sooner than you might have wanted.
17:08 Hello Byf. When you said this i couldn't stop thinking about the leaked cutscene and if you have seen it?
0:46 I think that titan was Joxer
My immediate thoughts when ahsa mention about nomads and desserts was rhulks family and his people on lubrae. Werent the ones that left the city and travelled the desserts referred to as nomads. I havent read the llore in a while so i may be mistakenly.

I’m not gonna spoil here but a cutscene from later in the season has been leaked and I’m soooo excited for Byf to see/cover it
