    I ordered a rack for my 100 series from victory 4x4. As soon as I installed it I knew it was a big mistake. I instantly started the return process and ordered a real rack from gobi.

    doesn't $1-2k seem a little excessive for some bent tubing and metal grate?

    • @DavidsOutdoors
      @DavidsOutdoors 7 лет назад +4

      Philip Gragg depends on what roof rack. i have gone through 3 different kinds and even did some custom work on my Jeep. When trying to add certain things like Kayaks ect... the Thule roof racka that I had didnt work so great. I needed a sturdier one and there are brands that have cheap thick tubing. When you see a Gobi rack you can tell right away there is a huge quality difference.

    AA1PR It's all personal preference. My rig can take a side angle way beyond my level of comfort, and I don't get tippy often. I prefer the roof storage so I can load for a longer duration, and keep the interior clear for passengers.

      +Overland Bound the easiest way to aim the lights down would be to grab the flat metal that the lights screw into on the inner edge of the plate and pull up so it tilts the lights down

    I'm glad to see someone finally going in to some detail about these racks- it certainly will help me make a better informed decision when it comes time to buy one myself. My comment is really an aside- although it's tempting to leave your axe and shovel strapped to the top (we all think it looks cool!) look at their handles: shovel is badly degraded and the axe handle is so badly cracked as to be nearly unusable. Maybe either leaving them at home when they're not needed or replacing with fiberglass handled tools would be a good idea.

    • @OverlandBound
      @OverlandBound  9 лет назад +1

      Ha! The axe IS unusable. It was shattered on my last trip. Time to get a new one! Thanks for the comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

      +Matthew Moisan I wonder if painting/dipping it with Rhino Liner (or similar) would also work. I imagined it would help, but have not tried it.

    • @OMACMedicFiveZero
      @OMACMedicFiveZero 8 лет назад

      +OliverClosov13 fiberglass handles are inferior to a good well cared for wood handle. Sand the wood back and treat it with boiled linseed oil. We have been doing this for years and years in the fire service and wood always comes out on top.
      A lot of the newer guys prefer glass but a well taken care of wooden handle will outlast the user.
      Wranglerstar has videos on it.

    He said to get a rack with alot of load weight but he didn't say to keep in mind your own vehicles load capacity, if your already maxed out with the trunk and passengers it could be dangerous to drive it and damageing to your vehicle as well.

    You mentioned something about limitations on the kind of rack weather you use or not a roof tent, can you elaborate please?? THX!!

    • @OverlandBound
      @OverlandBound  8 лет назад

      +Carlos Ibañez Yup! You just want to be sure it is rated for the load. Some racks that are made for the RTT have areas of sidewall missing so the RTT mounts right on the roof rack instead of up on the rails.

    What I didn’t like was that even with gently touch to the mesh on your rack it was rattling. If something rattle - it is not completely secure. I think it needs more weld to between mesh and frame. And also it is so annoying when something rattle…

    I've enjoyed going through your videos. I noticed you left your stock roof rack on underneath your Gobi - If you had a naked roof, about how much clearance would you have from the top of the roof to the bottom of your rack? I've been planning my own roof rack build for a while now, and will "borrow" from this design a lot. My only issue will be total height added once it's all said and done. At my current stock height, I should still be able to fit in the garage fine, but if I'm ever able to get the 2.5" lift I'd like, keeping it in the garage may be an issue so I'm going to try to keep my rack as close to the roof as possible.

    I am making or haveing made a 4.5 x 5 foot rack out of 1 inch square tubing . I asked the metal guy to make it the strongest and money saving way he could which ended up being 90 degree angles which is fine with me . I found some clamps at the junk yard which is going to save me 75 dollars . It is transferring some of the labor to me . I don't have it yet but should with in the week . I paid 65 for 3 24 foot long steel tubing and labor so far the basket is made is at 140.00 . All said and done I should come in at 250.00 . But will do a couple small add ons when I get more money

      You will be a lot happier making it your self . I see racks around town from time to time . And I would be afraid to put more than a suit case on them . Not only just some of the small one''s But the tubing . It looks about the diameter of my grand kids baby swing . Some of them are way overpriced . HOPE TO SEE YOUR RACK WHEN DONE .

    I'm curious about the wind dam (fairing), since you have it mounted _below_ the rack. Is there more benefit to having it mounted there as opposed to where you more commonly see it mounted, on the front of the rack itself?

Or is it because that particular rack you have doesnt come with the ladder as a package so that was an accessory option for you

    your rack should be welded to the top of your truck, cause anyone with a good size crow bar could just pop all the spots where you have locks on your frame of the truck.Now for security of your property on top, you might think of covering it with chicken wire while travelling.

    • @OverlandBound
      @OverlandBound  9 лет назад

      Mike D I haven't used them, but the right slimline table would probably fit. I know a few guys who have them tucked under the rack. Just be sure to measure first!

      You can, but with the Ranger rack and lift its pretty high!

    Wow, I got on your link to Overland Bound website. They only make stuff for newer model vehicles. I am in the process of converting my 1993 ford E150 to 4x4 with a conversion kit from ujointoffroad.com. They offer racks also but I really like the design on the overland. But I guess I will have to continue to shop.

    The roof rack starts with the feet. If they are no good then your roof rack is no good. It sucks stopping and having to pick all your stuff that fell because the feet broke. I have been there.

    Great review keep em coming! Is your rack able to support a tent and have you ever considered adding a roof top tent? Thank you

    • @OverlandBound
      @OverlandBound  9 лет назад

      Yes it would support a tent, but I really think I'm a ground tent guy. My reasons are rack space, size, number of people, going up and down a ladder. I don't mind, but guests.

    • @The-Bladeslinger
      @The-Bladeslinger 9 лет назад

      Overland Bound cool thanks! Also just noticed the sunroof inserts , those are the only removable section towards the front, correct? I really like that option and just to be able to store stuff without worrying they will fall through the rack..
      I have land rover discovery with the typical roof rack for that veichel, I wonder though if I could install those gobi inserts to my rack...

    • @OverlandBound
      @OverlandBound  9 лет назад

      THEBLADETHROWER Yup - the sunroof section is the only removable piece, which I think is a good thing for rigidity. I think they make a rack for the Disco!

    Don't know about US case, but in Eu, some companies do the same as in this video: the kind of marketing that talks about what other do bad, instead of JUST defending and promoting what the companies believe they do good. I really hate that. If you do something great, live with it. Promote it. Continuously try to get better. Let clients decide what is best for them. Experience comes from get it wrong, and get it right. They are not ass dumbs that can't make a decision, or learn from them. Just a thought

    It is a nice roof rack, and a little pricey for the average consumer. but you do get what you pay for.. I am concerned about your overhead off road lighting.. You used wire nuts? So you spent money on the top of the line on the rack and lights and you didn't use a weatherproof plug connector? I bet you did the lights yourself, any respectable shop would not use wirenuts on a vehicle. solder and crimp with weather proof sleeves or weatherproof plugs if you have to remove the rack. Period... I know someone that did the wirenut thing with his overhead lights and grill lights and the road vibration and wind made the connections loose and caused a pretty bad electrical fire. A few of us are gearheads and advised him that he may have a problem prior to this fire.. Word to the wise, Take your time with wiring and always use proper connectors, fuses, relays and wire gauges.

    • @OverlandBound
      @OverlandBound  7 лет назад +1

      This is great advice. I would like to tell you that I have since improved those connectors because I know you are right, and that those wire-nuts were temporary, but they weren't, and I didn't, and now my lights don't work. Lesson learned...safely. Thanks.
