    As for the protective properties of the thick, long beard: I found out it helps a lot when you go to the mountains, and I mean serious alpinism not just a walk through some hills. The cold, the dry and thin air, the sun radiation reflected from the snow - it all damages your skin, especially face, as other parts are usually highly protected in such conditions. So it's ether you wear a mask or bandana (that soaks wet from your breathing and then the ice crust inevitably forms) which isn't very convenient, or... You just grow thick and bushy cave-man style beard. When me and my bro go in the mountains we don't shave for a month at least before start climbing.
    English is my second foreign language, and I find it quite useful to practice a little from time to time. I already found some interesting opinions on beards and their useful properties here.
    We love you Chad, never stop what you're doing!✌️

      This is quite a good idea. Beard being present in colder northern climates makes sense, since those are pretty much the only places where you get UV coming from below - reflected from the snow. As for native Americans... Good old biological randomness?

    • @ChadZuberAdventures
      @ChadZuberAdventures  9 месяцев назад +4

      Thanks for sharing your experience. Yes, I can understand how the cold snowy wind can be better endured by a man with a beard. I still don’t understand why the hands and feet don’t have lots of hair though.

    • @tendermigraine
      @tendermigraine 9 месяцев назад +2

      @ChadZuberAdventures well, according to modern evolution theory(we don't have to believe it entirely, but still) the human species originate from Sub-Saharan Africa, which means humans just didn't actually need to have such hair. Naturally, people are not very adapted to live in a severe climate. If not for our ability to make fire and craft warm clothes, we couldn't survive there at all. Besides, having such hair would be highly inconvenient in terms of handcraft and precision work.
      But what we have insted is a special mechanism that activities in especially hard conditions. When it's very cold, your body is trying to save the most important internal organs from hypothermia, so blood leaves our limbs to warm up the entrails. That's why the fingers and toes are the first thing to freeze 🥶

    Wearing a beard in hot climate zones presents unique challenges. In these regions, the warmth and humidity create an environment conducive for bacteria and fungi to thrive. If food particles or moisture linger in the beard, they can provide an ideal breeding ground for these microorganisms, potentially leading to infections. This might explain why many men in hot and arid regions, like the Middle East, often maintain well-groomed or shaved faces, giving rise to a rich barbering tradition.

    I saw in the TV several years ago, that in some part of the world, people use a small long stick, that burns with flame. The guy sit in the barbers chair, and the barber where basically moving the stick with the flame quite quickly over the (short)hair. The hair got fire, and then with the other hand the barber put the flame out. The barber did basically round movements with the hand. One was igniting the hair with the flame, and the second hand instantly put the flame out by petting it. I think it is possible to remove hair with fire. But it must be a flame (and not a hot stick) and maybe a relative cold flame. So some special thin stick is definetly needed. And I would say, short hair is also mandatory, to avoid igniting all of the hairs and thus getting fire burns.

    Beards make a nice "face jacket" in extreme cold and help cut the wind (insulative value is very limited) when the rest of you is covered up but face exposed.

    LOL - I like both my long hair and my beard as well. I did have a friend back in highschool that would use a lighter to "shave" - though he could hardly grow a beard, so it was more just getting rid of scraggly patches. A small clean flame is required, maybe you could use anaerobically fermented methane, perhaps stored in an inverted clay vessel with a water seal (primitive gasometer). Keep a pinhole sealed with mastic on top, poke it open with a cactus needle and light with a brand when needed!

    I think it's very interesting that our ancestors as well as our close relatives were and are really hairy, yet we lost almost all of the fur. I skimmed through a few articles to get a general idea of it, and while some say that it was due to the climate differences (when people moved to warmer climates they lost the fur because it was just easier to travel long distances without it), some others also suggest it might be due to hygienic reasons (you sweat a lot more with fur, more space for bacteria to grow, lice and other insect live inside of hair/fur).
    I personally can only speculate, but - if the hair was similar to the body hair we have now - perhaps it was on one hand too warm and unhygienic for warmer climates, on the other not warm and protective enough for cold climates, which made humankind prefer clothing over it?
    Also, I can fully understand why you wouldn't wanna have a beard, especially while being in a desert. However, if I had to decide on what to use on my face: either the obsidian blade or the torch.... I'd probably ask Manscaped if they could deliver a beard razor over to my hut ;) (if I had a hut in the wild.... I'd love to have to have one!)
    No, but seriously, the obsidian is definitely the better option, even though the facial skin is extremely sensitive and I really don't wanna know how painful that is.... the fire stick.... I honestly wonder if the people that suggested it ever burnt themselves even the slightest? Fire was used a lot after it was discovered, it's extremely useful after all (and extremely dangerous), but that doesn't mean that the primitive way was always fire!

      Good points there. A few people wrote in the comments that they either use a small flame to trim their beards or a hot stick or ember. So maybe it can be done with just the right level of heat. I don’t know. And I don’t I will experiment with that any time soon.

    Hi Chad lol I'm soooo glad you didn't do this and I'll bet your wife is too😂 anyway, I showed this too my brother Josiah since he has a little experience with this, I'll let him comment. Great video 🥝😄 Hi. My sister showed me this and asked me to comment as I've had both a beard and long hair living off grid. A blade is definitely the way to go, using fire or an ember near your face is just asking for trouble. Obsidian produces some of the sharpest blades you can get, period. Obsidian is used in some surgical scalpels for this reason. Hot water, a saponin rich plant like yucca, and a sharp obsidian flake is definitely far superior. As for the protective value of a beard, it's more of a menace than an aid, I always keep clean shaven off-grid. Like many things there's a lot of assumptions and old wives tales about this and many other bushcraft topics. Using fire near you face is simply STUPID. really enjoyed the video, thanks from southern New Zealand 👍🇳🇿

    I know for some of the eastern woodland tribes body hair was see as unclean and would go to great lengths to remove it. Often plucking hair from their eyebrows and eyelashes with their fingers. They would use ashes to remove the oils from their hands so that that could get a better grip. Stone blades removed from a blade core would also be used to shave the scalp and body, before animal fat paints would be applied to protect the skins from the sun and insects.

    The logic behind the scent thing might be seen with how hound dogs have many skin folds and long ears which helps them trap the scent and get more accurate positions or readings of the scent. I think for humans this is utter bs though, we have nowhere near the capacities to smell like a hound dog. That MAY be something along this persons thought process though

    I have a question: how do you deal with ticks and their diseases when living out in the wild in a primitive lifestyle?
    I would appreciate your advice

    • @ChadZuberAdventures
      @ChadZuberAdventures  9 месяцев назад

      One time I slept in a field and I had at least 20 ticks crawling on me during the night. Over the following three days I was removing them from all over my body. Some places have a lot of ticks. I don't know if I ever had a disease from a tick though. I've had a lot of health issues in my life. I always pushed on through them and I think a healthy diet helps tremendously to overcome health problems. Immersion in nature also heals. I think that when you live very close to nature your immune system becomes very strong and you can tolerate many diseases better than a person living the modern way.

    In regards of beard function, here is my two cents. I used to suffer from herpes on my lips and face. It was painful and uncomfortable, herpes came usually when I touched my face with dirty hands during camping or hiking, together with sun and wind that dried my lips. Now, since I have pretty thick and long beard with mustache, I don't have herpes too often. For me personally it's a natural barrier that protects my skin and lips. I'm not saying this is its main purpose but it works great for me this way (also, human genitalia is also covered with hair naturally and I can imagine it's for the same reason - protection of sensitive skin).

    I think it's fine to say "yeah, but what about X?"
    But at the same time, having an example to the contrary of a theory doesn't necessarily make it wrong.
    You probably don't want to be the type of person that goes "Oh yeah? Well if humans evolved from monkeys, then why are there still monkeys?"
    We may not have hair on most of our faces simply because they get in the way of expression, and expression is critical for such an extremely social species as humans.
    Likewise, beards may not provide "defense" in the form of cushioning, but they do provide it in the form of slip.
    The hairs help to prevent a punch from grabbing the skin and landing quite so solidly.
    Just curious, who were you fighting to have cracked a rib? I hope it was just a sparring match, lol.

    the way you want to do it is with a good flame on a stick. you move it fast touching the skin for a split second. fat wood works great. if you can put water on your beard or hair it will help with evaporative cooling.

  • @Nunya_Bidnez
    @Nunya_Bidnez 9 месяцев назад +1

    Fire shave is an art. It takes some time to get it correct. When you do it is way better. The key is to have a smolder not a flame and range. Ask me how I know. I gave up on blades years ago. Also it does not grow back as fast. The point is not to reach the skin as well. It is to shorten and shape it. You Hover over the hair not to touch it.

    we have lost the hair on our hands because scientifically we needed a more tactile touch, more sensative fingertips to feel, to gauge things. But we still have our fingernails to protect our fingers somewhat from damage. if you cut your hair, don't forget to donate it to a foundation that makes wigs for children fighting cancer.

    My beard never grows (just small chunks), and I am 34 right now. Just not the type of face I guess. I have sparse hair on the head also, but it is long - about your size. And I don't want to cut it, it gave me some personality and I liked it. It does cost more to have it though :D Shampoos, masks...
