Fun fact: there’s a good chance the maneki neko was indeed female. The figure is traditionally a calico cat. Calico fur is cats happens when the cat has the gene for both black and orange fur. That gene is on the X chromosome, in a spot that isn’t on a Y chromosome. So it’s almost exclusively a female trait. Male calico cats have a genetic disorder, they wouldn’t be able to have orange and black genes otherwise, and are often naturally sterile. A tortoise shell fur pattern in cats is created the same way, the only difference is if the cat has white fur as well. White fur isn’t X-linked. The fact that calico is X-linked is why there can never be a breed of cats that’s all calicos. It’s also why you can’t clone a cat and get the same coat pattern every time. White fur in cats always starts at the belly and moves out, covering the face and tail last (think Siamese fur pattern). House cats can’t have a spotted pattern like a Dalmatian, the closest they get is the stripes and circles you see on ocelots and cheetahs. You’ll also never see patterns like a German Shephard, since the orange and black patches on torties and calicos happen at random. You will see most businesses in Japan and around the world (if they have any Japanese influence) displaying the maneki neko somewhere within the store or office to bring in good luck and good fortune. The beckoning paw is welcoming good profits and money to flow in to the business. Most restaurants and small mom and pop businesses here in Hawaii will display the maneki neko for good luck and good profits!
