You are right that some people without real weapons experience say some really dumb things. Recently while I was holding my spear, my brother walked by and said a knife was a much better weapon. That he could just grab my spear and stab me easily. I tried to explain to him why he was wrong but he just said "whatever" and walked away.

Hey Shad, why are the wings of the spear aligned with the blade itself? Would it not make more sense if the wings were perpendicular to the blade? I feel like the wings being aligned like that would potentially allow the wings to slip into the wound if the wings weren’t long enough.

    • @cinder1980
      @cinder1980 3 года назад +1

Having the wings perpendicular means that you could have even shorter wings and less weight on the spearhead and therefor more point control while still keeping the utility of the wings.

I'm not sure the Mandolorian martial art Din uses to fight with the staff is supposed to be a spear style, I think it's more based on bojutsu but modified to have stabbing attacks with the small head. It's a metal bo with a small spearhead to add stabbing. Also, on the grounds of no hand protection, I'm pretty sure it's a Mandalorian weapon, so you'd be expected to be wearing the full armor, gauntlets included.

I think it would be detrimental in case you were fighting a creature and you were to stab it only to get your spear stop before hitting any vital organ
And before someone asks “why not use a blaster?" heat resistant beasts and blaster-proof scales aren’t really that uncommon and you may also use a spear just to show off (which isn’t uncommon in the Mandalorian culture and is heavily encouraged instead)

I see the point you’re going for, but Winged spears were also a go-to weapon for Boar hunting. The boar spear had a heavy broad blade and wings so the spear wouldn’t over-penetrate through the charging animal and allow the boar to attack the wielder by charging all the way up the shaft.
I feel like this principle would apply in general for hunting UNLESS the spear was specifically for throwing.

The actress for Morgan is Diana Lee Inosanto, she is the daughter of one of the most important martial artists in America, their main martial art is kali/silat/fma. The style of staff and the style of fighting reflect that. The spear name in these styles are called "sibat". We can also see the influence of the maori Taiaha. In both cases the spear point is a the second thought option. It is a filipino belief that training must be transferable to many weapons. So the main art is based on the staff. In regards to the beskar spear being used primarily as a quarterstaff: it's short, it's thin, and it's made out of a material that is supposed to be really dense. What does that tell us? Two things: it's design is less oriented towards being a spear (and or they wanted to keep it in frame as much as possible) and that getting whacked in the jaw with it will probably break your jaw, because that's a lot of kinetic energy over a small area. So, why is it used more like a quarterstaff than a spear? Simple: it's most effective when used as a quarterstaff. Why is it a spear and not a quarterstaff? The mandalorins are a very practical people, and the one big weakness of a quarterstaff is that it doesn't have any pointy bits. So, if you add on a pointy bit, by forming one end into a small spearhead, then it becomes a lot more versatile. So, the beskar spear is less a short, thin, spear but a thin quarterstaff with a pointy end.

Mandalorians are trained from childhood in the use of about every Weapon there is in the galaxy.
We see how The Mandalorian fought with the Spear, so i guess that is the Melee way he has learned to fight.
I asume that the Use of such weapons like the Spear for a mandalorian is rather using it like a quarterstaff (like Shad said) and bringing in the killing blow with the small Spearhead, which makes sense since the Mandalorians trust fully in their armor and are fighting like it.

"Historical accuracy" only works in our world.
What was the spear designed to be used against- other Mandalorians with gaps between armor? Non-Mandalorians wearing whatever they happen to wear? If Mandalorians, of course there won;t be cutting edges because the gaps in their armor aren't conducive to such strikes. On the other hand that general style of armor proved very popular- the spear would be useful against Clone troopers and Imperial Stormtroopers equally. But, full body armor seems pretty rare in the Star Wars universe, so a stabby stick does seem generally useful. Plus, we don't seem to see any evidence of tight;y- massed formations being a historical thing so you wouldn't' expect longer spear-like weapons like pikes.
Are there any Earth history accounts of the wings getting caught in armor? That might explain why there are no wings on the Mandalorian spear- they could get stuck in armor.

I don't know of any historical account of spear wings getting caught in armor. In fact, one of the reasons they were made was to avoid over-penetration from the spear's thrust, so in any instance they would be more beneficial than not.
Not to say the wings should be a "must" in a spear, though. In the scholagladiatoria channel there's a kind-of response to this one that explores more on this topic, if you're interested. It gives some other considerations that Shad missed and could be more accurate to what the Mandalorian's spear really is.

@@garethvila5108 Yep, for instance the crosspiece on boar spears are specifically there to stop overpenetration *and* to sort of "steer" the boar away from the wielder of the spear. Same function could be served by war spear "wings".
I'm subbed to Matt Easton's channel and yes, he talks about the topic but he also points out why there's so little documentation of details like this- everyone knew why weapons were made the way they were at the time so very few people wrote anything about it.
      Hence we get guesses.+

I think a few reasons why the spear doesn’t have wings and is thinner is because it’s more of a javelin it’s sleek design gives it the ability to be thrown and since it’s made out of beskar it can cut through most armours and since it’s for a mandalorian it could be used to fight beasts as well being able to stab further into an alien creature if it had wings it may not get deep enough to kill

I mean even if that's the case, it wouldn't have harmed the weapon's functionality to have put a proper cutting blade on it.
However, i do disagree that fighting "up close" with a staff is ideal for a lightsaber. There's a reason qtr staff's grew to 9 feet long. The only real advantage a spear has over a sword is range. It doesn't matter how "careful" you need to be with a lightsaber the closer you are the easier it is to land a killing strike.

    2) If your armor is lightsaber-proof what do you need hand protection on the spear for?
    3) I have a bit of a problem with Beskar armor. Even if a lightsaber can't cut through the metal, unless it's also a perfect insulator you're still going to cook inside your suit from the heat those things must give off.

I think it’s more of a javelin/quarterstaff than a proper spear. Plus I think it should be noted too that it was made by & for Mandalorians, and was probably designed with fighting against armored opponents in mind.
If that’s the case it would make sense for it to be designed with a head more suited to piercing/slipping through armor plates.
As for the length, pure Beskar is extremely rare and expensive so having s weapon made of it would undoubtedly be a weapon that never left the owner’s side, so a shorter and more manageable length would be appropriate for carrying.
Finally we see it used for not just thrusts, but rather using the entire staff as both an offensive and defensive tool for a large number of circumstances.
This is why I believe that this design is not only practical, but preferable fitting for the character both personally and culturally. I love it for it’s simplicity.

@@nathanthom8176 sorry, meant to say basically the same thing.
There at least SHOULD be multiple situations where Lightsaber can't cut through "literally anything, anytime, anywhere, instantly thank you". They very clearly melt-cut through materials by giving a fixed output of thermal energy: they do not behave as though they are mono-molecular death-sticks (like Wonder Woman's sword or literally any ninja sword in anime).
That's why I agree with your observation of the lightsaber heating up the beskar on contact, because logically we should expect for the metal to glow as the heat of the lightsaber makes it approach it melting point.
Meanwhile, other kind of materials get melted because the heat of the blade makes them exceed their melting point.
The only place that this logic is inconsistent is wherever light sabers are shown to cut through the hulls of spacecraft; I mean, shouldn't we expect that stuff to be able to withstand the light of all those STARS they're intending to fly by,, deflector shields or no?

In defense of the Beskar's spears small size, pure Beskar is established to be extremely rare. Mando's suit of armor of pure Beskar is stated to be worth a fortune, and collection of even small amounts of Beskar is a plot point in multiple episodes. So that might be the largest spear based on the amount of Beskar the creator of that spear had at the time. Even if it was made by a Mandalorian, the amount of Beskar in that spear could be dedicated all they could afford to a melee weapon, as every ounce of beskar that goes into making spears is an ounce of Beskar that isn't going into making armor. Additionally, the Beskar spear is really only useful specifically against Jedi using lightsabers, as they can get in your face very quickly and deflect blaster shots. Jedi usually use sword like lightsabers, the spear already has an advantage of greater reach and can be used like a quarter staff for defense if the Jedi gets up in the user's face. Against other threats, the spear user should just shoot them with a blaster at range, so extra length wouldn't be helpful.

That said, why wouldn't the spear be designed to fight against light sabre wielders ? The mandalorians had a long ass war against the jedi, it would only make sense for the weapon to also be designed to go up against sabres. Its made from pure beskar the only material that can block a sabre, I see no other special purpose for it otherwise, outside being a small spear.
As for the wings stopping it from penetrating deep enough, they do stop you from doing so, but only after you have penetrated your target to the lethal depth, they have to bs positioned in at the right length away from te spearhead, so no thats not true, Shad said as much in the video itself.
The wings are multi functional as they also stop the spear from over penetrating and getting stuck, you only need to go through a certain amount before it becomes lethal, too much and it can become troublesome for the wielder. Its the same with guns for example, unless you want to pierce armour, you don't want your rounds over penetrating your target, it lessens the damage done to said target, this is why things like hollowpoints were developed.

Hey shad, love your content!!! I just wanna say that mando didn’t wanted to kill Moff Gideon, maybe that’s the reason why he fights with the spear more like a bo staff than a spear

Din has the staff and the dark saber, so he and Bo gotta fight for control of the leadership, he did agree to help re-take the home world of mandolor. I'm so excited for next season and thanks for the vid my guy.

Here's a little thought experiment for Beskar: what if items are only plated in this material because it's so cumbersome?
The ingots we see are very, very small. They are about the size of a large smartphone, usually. This implies that Beskar isn't only just rare, but that it's not used in mass quantities when forging. This would allow Beskar to be much heavier than we usually see- they are just wearing normal armor with a thin layer of superalloy over it.
And it would also explain why this spear is so small. Either it's pure Beskar, all the way through, and a longer spear would be too cumbersome... Or it's just a spear plated in a layer of Beskar, made from a single ingot or less.
This would mean one of two things: Either the spear is really heavy, strong, and impactful, making it more of a quarterstaff with a optional thrusting blade; Or the spear is made to be as light and as quick as possible, to keep up with the rapid pace of a jedi or someone else trained with a lightsaber.
Either way, I'd assume that you'd want to use it as a quarterstaff. It's just not very long, or very thick. Imagine all the hand shock from holding a thin metal rod far from your body during a fight. A spear doesn't usually ever need a metal coating, unless you're fighting a lightsaber in particular. And many of the strikes you usually could do with a longer spear aren't nearly as effective. It's like using a pair of pliers as a hammer; it's just not the right tool for the job.
But if it were used as a quarterstaff, then the size and material would make sense. Quarterstaffs take a beating, and they are best used as a close/mid range weapon rather than a distance weapon, like a spear. And no matter the weight, there's pros to a Beskar quarterstaff: either it's heavy enough to break someone's bones through the crushing weight, or light enough to swing very fast, and hit hard that way while overwhelming your opponent with speed.
Another consideration is that the spear could have been meant as a backup weapon, or a sidearm. Sidearms are suppose to be easier to carry, and rarely used. This means that they are usually undersigned, or designed with strict limits that eat into functionality. Blasters seem like the main weapons most people use, rather than any sort of melee weapons.
Or, maybe it was a showpeice, never meant for combat. It could have been made for ritualistic purposes, or as a sign of wealth that hung on a wall. Thus, when mandalore fell into disarray, a beskar spear, even with a slight design flaw, would be a much more valuable as a tool and weapon rather than a ornament.
Of course I'm just playing devil's advocate here. I don't really think the director intended the spear to get this much analyzation or speculation- and it lead to a slightly weird choice in spear.

The balance of the thing must be pretty wonky because it's made of a single material, unless the shaft is hollow or something.
Really, a spear isn't that sensible of a weapon for the Star Wars universe. I'm pretty sure some rich Mandalorian had it made just to show off. It's their equivalent to a wall-hanger.

It was the ancient cultural weapon of choice for the Mandalorians. Their progenitors used them to hunt beasts and war with the humans on Coruscant before they migrated to Mandalore.
