The movies AND the audience are subsequently dumbed down. An audience in 1935 or 1950 would be happy watching a film about people talking using witty banter and repartee in a drawing room, or if very risqué, a bedroom. These days, they need a car chase, many explosions, a huge body count, flesh eating zombies chasing dumb teenagers in a shopping mall, or dragons and orcs chasing a hobbit. Oh yes. Jean Arthur had camera fright on every take, to the point of nearly puking, but clearly she was worth the effort, though her crying/warbling style could be annoying if not kept in check, which it wasn't near the end of "The More The Merrier".

When you walk around acting like your sh*t doesn’t stink and you drink your own koolaid you lose touch with reality.Napoleon could’ve been great but because actors and directors just think they’re always great they don’t think they have to try anymore. Most films are just mailed in garbage now. The only films I enjoyed all of last year were Dune 2 and Wicked.
This from an actor that plays the same type of role over and over and over again, JD can play any part when he puts his mind to it and there may be some envy that he turned down pirates at the beginning , sounds a bitter old man
Opinions are just that. To say that Johnny Depp is "overblown" is certainly an opinion, wrong, spiteful, envious, and coming from some other orifice than the mouth, but an opinion nonetheless. Bravo, Brian
Brian Cox likes to mouth off like he's an expert and his opinions are ground-breaking. Not really. He'll probably insist the greatest cartoon ever made is The War of the Rohirrim and makes sure everyone knows it.
It's all subjective. One loves a painting, another hates it. I have to disagree about Johnny Depp. He has played a range of roles and has shown his worth, as a character actor. Playing Barrie in Neverland is a world away from Jack Sparrow. Calling Depp an 'overrated fraud" is meaningless to me. Who is he defrauding? The public enjoy his acting and each part is how he plays it. The old movies have their place but I personally don't think most of them did much acting , more looking glamourous and well dressed. Spencer Tracy was a good actor but he was exceptional, not the rule, to me.
I too think that Jean Arthur was a breed apart when it comes to acting. She was Beautiful which was not really not the niche they went after when casting her for a movie. I feel that she made the movies - not the other way around!!!
He talks about this actor or that actor being over rated... and then he calls this or that actor amazing or even a god. Brian... Dude... you are just entertainers. People telling a story. You are helping society put up with all the BS we have to go through in our lives to make everything happen, but if all the current actors and actresses suddenly disappeared life would go on and the queue to replace the missing would be as long as it is now. BTW I like Johnny Depp, his pirate character is my favourite and I would rather go to a movie with him in it as a pirate than a lot of the BS on at the theatres at the moment. It is not about whether you care about an actor, it is about whether you like or dislike or care about the character... and I like Jack Sparrow.
Sorry, Who the hell is Brian Cox? Why is this set up like he is an expert or someone everyone looks up to for acting advise? Anyone can spew their opinions and be mean or complimentary but who cares?
Acting...like all of the arts...is subjective...no one is right and no one is wrong about if something is good or bad...someone will see genius and someone else will see trash in the exact same thing
I can't disagree with much of what he says about those other actors but I have to say that I have never liked Brian Cox as an actor and his American accent is atrocious; just sounds like a Scottish guy failing to sound American to me. Glass houses go tinkle, tinkle.
Anya Taylor-Joy, is a great and Coming up actress. The only good thing, that came out of the napoleon movie, was “We Are Winning” meam from History Legends.
Johnny Depp was never S Tier, maybe A Tier but now barely B or B+ even though I am a Depp fan. Anya-Taylor Joy wasn’t top bill for Furiousa anyway, that was Chris Hemsworth as the kooky Villain! Hemsworth isn’t a bad actor or great actor but he certainly is a Draw for Netflix movies! 🤣
But there are moments in Mean Streets and Taxi Driver where he is absolutely electric. Unfortunately, we've never seen that level of magic since. I like a few of his films (Brazil and The Untouchables, especially), but you could replace him with numerous other actors who would all be equally as good in the role.
Nice the snippet from Spencer Tracy and the how the prohibition of one thing leads to the prohibition of the next, that has aged very, very well and we would need such stars again that make the world aware of it. But Spencer Tracy would be “woke” with these words today in a MAGA America.
Why do you paraphrase? For brevity? It might take an entire extra second to read the quote entirely. By paraphrasing, you risk softening the intent. Otherwise, you're a good narrator. Steven Seagal is pronounced "SeGALL", not "Siegel", by the way. On that note, i had the opportunity to meet Steven at a fund raiser thirty years ago. He was very gracious and charming. I know his reputation, but it wasn't my experience.
It's probably an AI-generated voice, not an actual person. They've managed to make them sound remarkably lifelike these days, but they still often mistakenly pronounce things phonetically.
i do not give a cp about what the actor thinks and do right another comment here heis a bitter man ,his acting okay i just think he can only play a rat to be honest he has no emotion.
Cox is way off base on Joaquin Phoenix, he's had too many Masterful performances to be overrated, Napoleon was just a horrible film, the blame doesn't fall squarely on him. Johny Depp on the other hand, yeah, he mails a lot of stuff in, but when he's focused, he's had some great performances. Donnie Brasco was definitely all that.
Pirates of the Caribbean was Disney kids orientated movie and acting range is not so important than spectacle. Exist very deep at subconscious level kids orientated movies, for example, Muppets Labyrinth movie or Pixars studio before Disney purchase form Lucas and S. Jobs "Toy Story".
The Witch was so boring. ATJ is very over-rated. Gimme Florence Pugh or Aubrey Plaza any day of the week😃 "The old man and the sea" is a great Spencer Tracy movie 🎥.
Interesting to hear Brian Cox cutting down Johnny Depp. Unless he has seen ALL of his movies, he has no idea how versatile Johnny is. Every character is its own. Just say you like old movies and actors of that time. You don’t need to trash Johnny as an overrated actor. Jealous much because I’ve only seen Brian Cox in Succession and one other movie where his role was minor. I recall he did theater! Great. That’s more his cup of tea. I can say this: Johnny doesn’t cut down other actors. He sees that everyone has something different to bring to the table. Brian, a jackass similar to Logan Roy, who gets a thrill from dissing others and calling it funny.
Joaquin Phoenix is vastly overrated but "Napoleon" is a horrendous film anyway and it is not his fault by Ridley Scott´s. He was a magnificent film director but he has lost his mind. I think Johnny Depp is a pretty good actor. I remember some excellent performances by him in "Sleepy Hollow", "The Secret Window" and above all "Donny Brasco".
Agree. All I hear is Brian’s spitefulness. Almost sounds jealous. Johnny is def not overrated.
So, your opinion!!!
Johny Depp is just pure imitation of Gary Oldman
Jean Arthur was amazing.
He went back on the Johnny Depp comment I believe
I too think that Jean Arthur was a breed apart when it comes to acting. She was Beautiful which was not really not the niche they went after when casting her for a movie. I feel that she made the movies - not the other way around!!!
Cox has chewed up some scenery in some of his movies.
Everybody thinks the artists from when they were growing up are the best
Where does he call anyone overrated frauds? Have a downvote.
Edit: if I missed something, somebody please correct me.
Brian Cox saying johnny Depp isn't a great actor?....seriously?....Cox is so good that most movie fans know his face but not his name!😂
Wow, he hates method acting , but loves James Dean???
Sorry, Who the hell is Brian Cox? Why is this set up like he is an expert or someone everyone looks up to for acting advise? Anyone can spew their opinions and be mean or complimentary but who cares?
Cox is definitely my favorite Hannible Lector.
Inherent Vice was a disaster for Phoenix and I like the guy. Didn't like The Joker either. Didn't see 2. Her/She was his greatest performance.
Deniro plays same character every movie
But there are moments in Mean Streets and Taxi Driver where he is absolutely electric. Unfortunately, we've never seen that level of magic since. I like a few of his films (Brazil and The Untouchables, especially), but you could replace him with numerous other actors who would all be equally as good in the role.
🥱🥱🥱
he does now and for the last 30+ years, but he used to not play the same character.
Plays himself 9/10 Total @sshole
Yes, a grumpy old man!
The Glimmer man is a great film
he's right Scott's Napoleon movie was awful...
Most supposedly biographical movies are.
It's "se-GAL"! . . . It's "mar-LAY-na"! Please check your pronunciations before you record!
It's probably an AI-generated voice, not an actual person. They've managed to make them sound remarkably lifelike these days, but they still often mistakenly pronounce things phonetically.
Hmm, my bad, I never heard of Actor Brian Cox?
Yes agree on Depp...overblown
Anya Taylor Joy is way overrated. Not bad. But overrated.
i do not give a cp about what the actor thinks and do right another comment here heis a bitter man ,his acting okay i just think he can only play a rat to be honest he has no emotion.
Phoenix was GREAT in Clay Pidgeons.js
Cox is way off base on Joaquin Phoenix, he's had too many Masterful performances to be overrated, Napoleon was just a horrible film, the blame doesn't fall squarely on him. Johny Depp on the other hand, yeah, he mails a lot of stuff in, but when he's focused, he's had some great performances. Donnie Brasco was definitely all that.
Mr Cox had his most success later in life.Is he still in Roy mode..
Semi-historical "epic". For clarification's sake.
I agree about Method.
Yeah he dislikes Method Acting but then says he admires Marlon Brando and James Dean 😳
Who is Brian Cox?
Who the f is brian cox? The former dolphin?
Come on Brian, I remember you in OUT with a blonde moustache.
Now Tom Bell was a brilliant actor
I like Brian but it’s not a good look to critique others.
American ?
Joaquin Phoenix is vastly overrated but "Napoleon" is a horrendous film anyway and it is not his fault by Ridley Scott´s. He was a magnificent film director but he has lost his mind. I think Johnny Depp is a pretty good actor. I remember some excellent performances by him in "Sleepy Hollow", "The Secret Window" and above all "Donny Brasco". BTW, I loath the series "Pirates from the Caribbean" 🤮🤮
