- St. Margaret Mary Alacoque was born in 1647 in France. She made a vow of chastity as a child, and showed a heroic degree of penance even at a young age. When seventeen, she fell into a period of tepidity when exposed to the enticements of the world. Our Lord Himself brought her back to her fervor and she became a Visitation nun. Margaret was well known for her holiness in the novitiate, and professed her vows in 1672. The following year she received the first of her three main revelations of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The messages convey the spirit of reparation and penance needed to console the Heart of Christ and save sinners. Margaret received other special graces during this time, including an invisible wound in her side. She was appointed mistress of novices and formed many holy religious. Before her death, materials for spreading devotion to the Sacred Heart were approved by the Church, such as holy images, prayers, and a special liturgical Feast requested by Our Lord Himself. She died a holy death in 1690.
