Or maybe they're simply just both inspired by the same thing that exists in real life? Something tells me the person who made the Ideas submission isn't the person that invented automatic garbage trucks, or the mechanism(s) they use. You really can't say it was their idea, and while the mechanisms are similar in function, that and the superfluous fact that they're both garbage trucks are literally the only similarities between the two. Otherwise they're completely different models, even down to the colour scheme.
I feel like if you designed a modern garbage truck with a play feature you'd kind of end up with similar mechanisms anyway. Not like it's the first lego garbage truck either, so idk.
I think it's a great, affordable entry to get into the Tecnic modeling experience. The truck may serve as inspiration to build battery loading stations, dump sites etc. It'll be fun!
The controversy with the 'similarity to rejected Ideas winners' thing is kind of more a testament to how, at this point, 10,000 supporters is sort of a really low number for what amounts to an internet poll. When it was a small project and 10k fans represented mass consensus of the project across many demographics, maybe, but the fact that essentially any set based on any IP can reach 10k supporters is a pretty clear sign it should be closer to 50 or 100k. The sheer volume of projects submitted to Ideas means inevitably something similar will come. ...and besides, people who make submissions to Ideas don't conceptually /own/ what they submitted, so certainly the person who put forth 'a side loader garbage truck' isn't the sole proprietor of the concept. It's literally the real function on the real truck.
Yes, but the problem that was raised here is a match of not the total conception of "some garbage truck with side-loading arm" but an idea of the single-action knob that grabs the junk bin and then lift and knocks it over via a consequentially connected angled and straight gears that locks each other. On one hand, the IDEA submission was nice and clear and deserved a System/Creater dedicated set that would work amazingly and give credit to the author of this amazing "grab-n-lift" concept. And "stealing" this idea was totally unfair act by TLG. On other hand, the submitted modes don't have a Copyright protection and TLG are in rule to do whatever they wanted, as they doesn't violate anything. As a result, it makes other MOCers thingk that IDEA is a bad place to submit their inventions, where they will be more likely cannibalized rather than awarded.
Small, but very cool set. Mack reminds me older little, but functional sets like 42120, 42121 or 42060. The front panel is doubtful, but on this scale it will be extremely problematic to do without stickers and make a similar front part. It sounds like a cool challenge to try to do better than the original!
Congrats on 200k subscribers! You definitely deserve it. Really cool looking sets love the garbage pick up function, absolutely genius! Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you!
This is a good set, plenty functional, pretty affordable and a decent size. It's also probably one of the few Technic sets that's almost compatible in someone's Lego City. Because it's actually very similarly sized to the similarly priced Recycling Truck from the City theme, which was a tiny bit smaller.
Bought one and i love it. I disconnected the rear-axles and made the rear-wheels to single-wheel-spinning. Now, it ist one of the finest HOG-Sets i´ve ever built.
After building this I like the model with the thoughts that the grabbing mechanism could be better designed. The front side arm slides out and when you actuate the arm, it rubs and pushes the "control panel" piece off.
Nope, the one you are talking about regularly appears in all different kinds of sets - www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=32072&idColor=86#T=P&C=86 The new one has the cross axle hole in it rotated by 45 degrees.
I instantly thought of the Lego Ideas set. I hate that we don't get smaller Lego Ideas sets anymore. Everything is $80+. The only cheaper one I can think of that came out recently was the space one but that's not even a proper Lego build. It's more like an art set
The axis that connects the rear door with the body 4:00 has 2 round pieces on its left end, but nothing on the right. I made it look symmetrical by using the round elements from the left-over pieces and added them on the right end of the axis.
The person behind the mechanism is an absolute genius, I forget his name but it was a Lego idea I believe Also at the end, that design is simply brilliant and saying just anyone would’ve found it out on their own is just bananas to say, clearly defending Lego there I see
A very cool set. It has a pleasant look and sufficient functionality for the price. Using System pieces well finishes the appearance. Thanks for a good review!
3:10 I'm not quite sure what you mean by that, maybe I'm just not seeing a gear or so in the video. What exactly stops you to just rotate the brown axle on the left by 45° so two identical gears would line up correctly? The only axle that is fixed in a specific position (by the black bevel gear) is the grey one on the right. The brown one can rotate freely if I'm seeing this correctly.
@@RacingBrick I understood that. But I see my mistake now. While the brown axle + gear can rotate freely and thus could be oriented in the way needed, the liftarm is obviously locked to 90° rotations on the axle. So yeah.. never mind i was just stupid there for a moment. 😀
One can only dream of a day where white plastic and white stickers can coexist in the same shade. I wish the Lego art department well on their long quest to find the matching color sticker
I will admit, I am one of the very few who thought it was a mechanized set of sorts. Not disappointed that it isn't though. I find the little nob mechanism quite interesting
The arm mechanism on mine knocks the 1x4 flat piece with the sticker off every time. There is some backlash in the arm that causes it to rotate ever so slight and hit that tile. Have checked the assembly but can't figure out how to fix it 4:36
200K, congrats! About the garbage truck - it should've been made when it was submitted to Lego Ideas originally and credited the original creator of the mechanism. Also it would be good if the dumping worked well... Finally - For Lego Ideas to be FAIR in such situation, whenever a submission is out of competition, the rights to it should be back to the original creator and not like now for 3 years still owned by Lego.
@@RacingBrick I rushed the response - I've seen in Sariel's review that the tiles kept staying on the chute. The original submission on Ideas on the other hand, iirc, had a separate mechanism to push the garbage from the grabber area to the back side which was lifted, here we have a shaped chute that doesn't guarantee the garbage to not get stuck on it. Maybe it depends on how dynamically/fast you will operate the grabber so the tiles are thrown at the chute instead of just falling down.
2:05 allow me to recorrect you. The brown technic part your referring to I believe came in the Star Wars AT-Hauler set. I would know because I have that one.
Gonna point out again how blatant lego's copying of an idea's submission is literally they released this right before the designer turned 18 and was eligible to upload the set to the bricklink designer program. Really scumbag move by lego.
Fantastic affordable Technic build with great functionality. Interesting seeing paper bags finally showing up in these new sets. Still not a good substitute for a good sized parts bowl though. Big congrats on 200 thousand subs. Well earned for the amazing content and in depth reviews.
Thank you for the video. I live in Western Canada. My pieces came in the traditional plastic bags. Also I think that new Knob gear @ 2:55 was used years ago is builds lke 8415 (dump truck). I'm old, I know XD
The problem with the white of the stickers not matching the white of the pieces they're applied to wouldn't be there if Lego used clear-backed stickers. I have some Exo-Force sets from 2006 and their stickers look perfect, have not started crumbling, and can still be peeled off and re-applied flawlessly today. Meanwhile all my other, non-clear-backed stickers are in various states of decay. Why does Lego not use clear-backed stickers more often? Or, hear me out: make less licensed models. Then there's no pressure to make the model look like some real-life thing, which means less details need to be expressed with stickers, which means the few remaining unbrickbuildable decorations can be realized with prints (which can more easily be re-used in later models as well as mocs). Prints are "clear-backed" by definition.
Congrats on 200k! Well deserved. As for the "Electric" naming, those that know Lego would probably seecit as a description of the prototype vehicl3. But those buying this as a gift for a grandchild, for example, might well think this was a description of the features of the model. I honestly dont know why Lego included the word, it adds nothing to the model as far as I can tell
Nice catch :) I was playing with some suspension mods, and I left the shock absorber disconnected. Now the fender piece practically sits on the tire :D
The complains about the similarity with the ideas entry is nonsense imho. There were steam locomotives on ideas, now every steam locomotive LEGO releases would be a counterfeit? Of course there might be similarities if you design after a real thing.

To be fair, I find it weird that you just hit 200,000. If I had to guess, I would have thought you were somewhere around 400,000. Congratulations on not being as big as you should be 😁
Yeah this build is nothing similar to the mostly brick built submittal design by Levi and Scott Hasse except that it's a sideloading truck. I was able to replicate the side loading mechanism with compactor myself and even got a nice comment from Scott Hasse on how close I got to their design while giving them credit for the inspiration. My only concern with this one is the front Mack sticker that has to go over that depression in the plastic.
If anything Lego should change the colour of the white plastic. Sure, it wouldn’t look right with older elements, but their white parts have always had a slight yellowish tint, making them not as nice as they could be, as opposed to a more pure white like the stickers
i find it odd that this became its own set because the mack anthem set has this exact truck (all be it not the electric variant) as a alternative built

@@RacingBrick I know they don't include mini-figs - it's the scale I'm complaining about. Makes for better play if it's cross-compatible. That's all. But I'd really like vehicles to be mini-fig scaled - otherwise there's really not much point. Disappointed I can't but a James Bond mini-fig in my Astin Martin....:)
I really like the new LEGO piece!
And in my opinion, this set is inspired by the Ideas presentation.
new piece is nice but i do not think its inspired
