The gurukul system of education has been in existence since ancient times.
A gurukula was a type of education system in ancient India with shishya('students' or 'disciples') living near or with the guru, in the same house.
The Upanishads mention multiple gurukulam, including that of guru Drona at Gurgaon
In a gurukula, the students living together are considered as equals, irrespective of their social standing.They learn from the guru and help the guru in his everyday life, including carrying out of mundane daily household chores , a guru does not receive or accept any fees from the shishya studying with him as the relationship between a guru and the shishya is considered very sacred.

University vs Gurukula
These are the how these system differ.
1)Purpose
University gives a degree that gives the person a job whereas Gurukula gives knowledge which makes a person survive on his own.
2)Timetable and Attendance
University has fixed timings and if portion isn't completed they take extra classes.No matter the student understands anything or not they insist on attendance.Here people use brute-force methods by taking the horse to drink water though the horse isn't thirsty Gurukula has no timetable.They keep the students away from distractions.More than 75% attendance the student would get 25% knowledge.Then the student would work to get the rest 75% of knowledge.Hence a thirsty horse would run to the pond/lake/river to quench its thirst.Not just the subject even values ,character and many such things are required which tell us how to lead a life than merely surviving in it.
3)Teaching and Learning
Universities mostly teach using old classroom based approach dictating notes or knowledge from books.This may end up killing interest of the students in the subject taught.The interaction with the faculty is quite constrained.In a Gurukula system apart from formal classroom based approach if the Acharya/Guru feels that a student has not understood then the student can approach the Guru again informally say before/after dinner.
4)Evaluation
Unfortunately in the STEM wonder where more labs,project works are required yet the students are made to mug up textbooks and vomit lengthy answers on the papers as we used to do them in school with limited or no-choices provided.This completely isolates the college campus from a corporate campus.In a Gurukula mode of education.Evaluation is based on the subject.For a theoretical subject like Vedas.Shlokas are mugged up and said by heart whereas for practical subjects like metallurgy,tailoring,cooking and fighting.Evaluation was completely practical. There is no non-sense of encoding and decoding of answer scripts
5)Teacher himself
Well I had kept this for the last but this is the most.It is difficult to find उपाध्याया: literally those who explain it in a crystal clear way so that the student might take the subject over his lifetime.Teachers would do good actions but not the right ones.Their intention of improving the student might backfire making the student regret all his life.Moreover teachers and even big professors do not update themselves with time.Any lie can be rebutted in seconds after the advent of google.Teachers create unnecessary fears in the minds of the students.Gurus make a permanent impression in the lives of the students.They literally bring the student out of darkness permanently.They are way larger than the subject itself as they even give them the right advice regarding the personal problems of the student etc.No Google could ever replace any Guru in this world.Guru is fearless and he removes the fear in the minds of others like what a true leader shall do it.
Conclusion:
Well people may say that Gurukulas are outdated well it is just a model of education.We Indians shall bring back modern Gurukulas in order to bring a billion flowers to bloom in this Nation.

The educational system in public sector is comparatively much better than private sector according to my opinion…Many private schools don't have primary academic infrastructure. Many teachers are not even graduates at the same time they are not able to communicate to children in right way. Many private schools have no laboratories, libraries, playgrounds . The only thing private schools doing is mugging up the subjects and forcing children to do more homework. students are becoming more sensitive, they are not able to face smallest problems in life, loss of memory power, logical thinking and so many problems

Your reference of dalits being prosecuted is upsetting but this does not mean every other person is like this, there could be many instances of dalits guilty of crime as well.
Take for instance Caste based reservation in India today many upper caste face the same humiliation which you describe for dalits with only difference being legitimacy of one in constitution. This video calls for complete overhauling of our education system so that we could get rid of the impurities(Like casteism /reservation) we have ingrained over the years.
