They look pretty small to hold everyone, unless we're all virtualized. How about if we work at making the planet the best we can? Interstellar travel is going to be tough unless we can crack the FTL problem. Maybe these are the ships of the first expedition to find another planet we can live on. They might be reconfiguring into a sort of wormhole gate to allow people to cross thousands of light years as easily as stepping into another room. Think big! Find the best possible solution and figure out how to make it work!

Steve Jordan To answer your question; working at making the planet the best it can be will take just as much time as interstellar exploration, which means that we'll have less time to actually dedicate to the studies necessary.
