Thank you for the white board- I saw this last year and it reappeared on FB. I have stage 4 melanoma (NED) and had we had the knowledge in my childhood I might have avoided melanoma....I have very fair skin, red hair and blue eyes...freckles.

I'm in the process of signing up for a GP (General Practitioner in the UK) so I can be checked for having Melanoma. I've researched it thoroughly and all signs point to yes. I even talked to my friend online who was in hospital and she had called over her doctor to talk with me about the symptoms and he was also concerned. A lot of the time people look for the more serious 'bleeding' symptoms but this is when it is at it's most critical and harder to cure completely. I'm only 17 but when I noticed a mole turned black, although small, I knew it could be it. I was unsure before then but this cleared my doubts.
I hate the sun, I've never stayed in it too long because its too hot and sticky (But I have burned twice), I'm pale, I have over 40 1mm/2mm/4mm moles over my body (Mostly lower legs and arms), the 4mm moles are more irregular in shape (One looks like a 6 or a 9, a few have half a slit through the centre), there is no hereditary melanoma however I am 50% likely to have the cancer gene (breast cancer), I would rarely wear sunscreen and if I did it would be on a beach not everyday and in spf 10/15/20 and would not reapply every 2 hours like you should.
Till I find out I have it I'm applying spf 30 (97% protection of UVA and UVB) everyday before I go out, reapplying every 2hours If I go outside, curtains and blinds shut in the rooms I use because windows don't block all UV rays. I also cover up and wear hats, sunglasses, etc whenever I can.
It may be a bit dismal like this but with this I'll be alive. I can't fret over the past now.

Doc Mike, this is a great companion piece to the Canadian melanoma blockbuster, multiple Webby award winning video "Dear 16 Year Old Me" produced by the David Cornfield Melanoma Foundation, that's had over 10 million views in 4 languages, shown in baseball stadiums and used by dermatologists to bring home the message of melanoma awareness. Dare you to watch and not be moved.

Thank you for the video and getting the message out there about being sun smart. I'm from Australia and we have a problem with skin cancer. I have had several moles removed and get my yearly check. Our states have banned commercial tanning salons and in primary school children are taught Slip Slop Slap Seek Slide. The message is starting to show statistically but we still have a way to go: www.ncah.com.au/art/dermatology/aap/slip-slop-slap-message-is-paying-off/195/ Unfortunately there are still many people not paying attention and being burnt to a crisp.

what's best way to get skin/moles checked in Ontario? Seems like it would be a family doctor then year long wait to see Dermatologist. Any walk-in skin checks around GTA?

It's NUMBER of moles, not AMOUNT of moles. It's just as well bad grammar doesn't give cancer.
