Can’t say I agree entirely with this. If you’re in a job where it’s not acceptable to turn up with black eyes every week then deffo get the face saver. Amateur or beginner
I always advice beginners to get the open face headguard as well, I had to begin with a Cleto Reyes facesaver since I have a deviated septum from a nose injury I sustained when was in middle school. Definitely not the smoothest process, I was very susceptible to uppercuts and looping hooks at first since you lose your peripherals from the face bar, but in a way It forces you to improve your fight IQ since you must learn to read your opponents opposed to using your reflexes to react.
I agree! Whats interesting is that the AIBA went away from wearing headgear for Olympic Boxing because they were showing that even with headgear, athletes were more prone to concussion/ injury. Which supports what I was saying in the respect that headgear's purpose is for preventing cuts/ damage from head butts, and not so much damage from the force of a punch. I think the padding on a headgear may disperse the force a different way, but if a guy like Triple G hits you full force, it doesnt matter if you're wearing a face saver of traditional, you'll sustain high damage.
I'm a beginner/amateur, yet i really wanted to save my face from all the sparring, especially a broken nose. Should i go for the facesaver or still the one with cheek pads?
waiyip po hey! I always tell beginners and amateurs to go with a standard open face headgear with cheek protectors. Face savers inhibit your vision and give you a false sense of security. Don’t want a busted up face? Then use your head movement and defend yourself properly, don’t eat shots you don’t need to. Also, if you’re sparring as an amateur or beginner and afraid of getting a broken nose, then there’s a loss of control there. You should be sparring someone that either has as much as experience as you, or more experience, so they can control the pace and you can learn. Not throwing wild haymakers or allowing people to use sparring as an ego booster. Just keep that in mind.
If neither of those will prevent concussions then what will? I've had a concussion from boxing before and it made me stop training for a few years. I want to train again but can't afford to get another concussion both for the impact on my health and being able to function mentally for my career. Other than "stop boxing" what gear/equipment should I use? Obviously it's not realistic to just not get hit since every fighter will get hit no matter how good they are.
Unfortunately, there’s always the risk of head injury with a sport like boxing. One thing that may help is working out your neck. Having a stronger neck prevents your head from snapping as violently, and therefore lessens impact to your brain. You may also want to get in the habit of rolling with the punches if you see them coming but can’t dodge or block in time. Of course, training head movement so that you get hit in the head less often to begin with should be helpful too. Finally, you may want to spar lighter, instead of going ham all the time. I hope that helps, cheers!
Its not good to have a broken nose period. Face savers will help with that but too many amateurs/ beginners use face savers and dont develop proper defensive head movement because they rely on that security blanket and lose their peripheral vision.
Hello csquaredboxing i'm 19 years old and have been boxing on and off for the past three years now due to constant moving between different cities. I was recently diagnosed with a brain deformity and had to undergo brain decompression surgery. I've been getting constant checkups to make sure everything is healing properly. My doctors have given me permission to return to sparring as soon as i'm fully recovered however they did say that i would be at risk of sustaining a injury than your everyday boxer. If i did decide to get back into the ring would my past medical issues prohibit me from competing in amateurs and or even the professional rankings. And if you were in my position and really loved the sport would you still compete knowing that you're at higher risk than everyone else. One more question if i did get back into sparring would you recommend the rival rhg10-intelli-shock headgear or the rival rhgfs3 face saver. Thanks and great channel!!!! 👍👊
I appreciate the feedback and support! I'm sorry to hear about your health condition and hope that you have a safe and full recovery. With that being said, boxing isn't worth more than your long term health, especially when it comes to your brain. At the amateur or pro level, repeated blows to your head could re-enable previous problems, and I wouldnt recommend testing those waters. Thats great that you have love for the sport, you can still be involved, but the risk to your health just isnt worth it. If you do feel the need to really spar, make sure to take it easy, or at least let your sparring partner know of your existing condition. Both headgears you mentioned are comfortable and protective, the face saver will protect your nose, but inhibits your vision. I personally would go with the rhg10 as it will allow you to see better and is a slimmer profile for moving your head.
Thank you so much for the response it's nice to get an opinion from someone who actually has experience in the ring. You are right i should reconsider my choices and focus more on living a healthy life. If i ever do spar i'll probably just work on body shots instead of head contact sparring. Maybe i could even pass my knowledge on to up and coming fighters through coaching. Thank you and as always keep up the great videos!!!!👍👊
@@shanebocek2461 youve got to be joking, youre asking a complete stranger on youtube who isnt a neurologist or even medical professional whether you should engage in full contact head trauma with a prior history of brain injury. You need another brain scan.
I actually don’t use headgear when sparring, I hate the fact that I can’t feel the knuckles at all but I can feel the blow, vs not using a headgear and feeling it all which feels better IMO. Also I can’t see that well cause I don’t have an open face, I have the one with only the cheek guards not the face saver but I can’t see well still
csquaredboxing also a completely unrelated question, but I’m going to get the superior fight sports gloves. Should I get 12 oz and use them for the bags and mitt work, or get 16 oz for only sparring? I don’t spar a lot, I’m a smaller boxer and most people are a lot bigger than me. I also have powerlock. What do you think I should do, 12 or 16?
I'm a beginner #kajukenbo and gearing up for point fighting. I chose topten taekwondo style (rubber, BAE flex). Haven't received it yet, can't wait to see how it handles our sessions. #mcduffy #inglewood #california #orangebelt #uss
you dont need any protection for point fighting ,its not full contact.I had that top ten headguard, its great without visor but useless with it,you cant see lots of strikes coming
I’ve had two plastic surgeries on my nose and a deviated septum from a really severe break when I was younger and the doctor says anymore damage and it will be beyond reparable restricting my breathing through my nose. Would the face saver be good for me? And does it really prevent nose damage? I sparred already just once last week my first time and a I had a couple of close calls where I almost took hits direct to the nose luckily they hit the bridge which is already fucked and crushed so no damage done it’s more the end tip of my nose and nasal passages which I’m worried about. Cheers
Yes, a face saver will definitely be better than any open face headgear in terms of nose protection. Just make sure to get the correct size and mold the frame of the face saver so that it fits your head properly.
the answer is simple,if you want to learn to box,you cannot be concerned with your nose, the 2 dont go together.I waited until I finished with kickboxing to get my nasal reconstruction and then I took up bjj which has no striking
Reyes Face-saver 2nd version, they seemed to work a different angle on facesaver to increase vision. Do you have a review on that Reyes 2nd generation face saver ?
it doesn't save your head from still getting punched in when you cant see the hooks coming you cant see shit in those things and also uppercut to the chin can still break your teeth it doesn't protect your chin and you cant see the uppercut out of those things.
Its pretty good, but you could still get hit in the nose with a hard punch in the right spot. But for an open face headgear one of the best because of the raised cheek protectors.
Winning facesaver kinda teaches you to keep your chin down.
Can’t say I agree entirely with this. If you’re in a job where it’s not acceptable to turn up with black eyes every week then deffo get the face saver. Amateur or beginner

I think that open headguard is good for light sparring, while facesaver for hard sparring
👍🏼🥊
i recommend cheek head gear, good vision and good protection but not too much protection to were you feel like you can eat all there punches
A good punch gave me headaches for days
No doubt!

Do facesavers protect your eyes?
Yes
Some what I been poked in the eye with gloves a couple time before
I understand what you're saying but also im thinking why is it ok for a beginner to break their noses and pros no ?

boxing is a high risk sport so dont do it if youre afraid to be injured. Its impossible to develope good basics with a facesaver.
Bro your channel stay with dope info and I dig the new intro
