  • Why do Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) and Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) work as well as they do?
Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) and Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) have both crafted tragic protagonists that have resonated with people all over the world in Eren Jager and Kamado Tanjiro respectively.
In this video I go over how both series craft their tragic protagonists and how it places them in the pantheon of great shonen leading characters.
As not only some of the best Shonen, but some of the best anime out there, Attack on Titan and Demon Slayer are capable of showing us how to better understand not just these characters, but our own nature.
Thanks for watching, I make anime and manga related content so if you enjoyed this video, leave a like and subscribe so you don't miss the next one.

I can see that in these characters. they both loose something that was really dear to them, but they react in a different way. Eren tries to make the world suffer just like he did, while Tanjiro tries to move on and prevent others what he is suffering through. I really like that

Tragedy is hard to do well without being shallow or edgy, but it really is so impactful when an author can pull it off the right way.

Best thing you can do tbh is to pull from real life and watch interviews or read stories of real life tragic stories

Eren is a really good character in my opinion. Not many protagonists in anime really go from being seen as the good guy in a bad environment to being seen as the bad guy influenced by his environment. It really makes you feel for the guy, seeing how he shifts from this innocent kid at the very beginning to someone who has been corrupted by the shit he's been hit with throughout his life, leading him to how he is now in the newest season of Aot. It is very similar to villains like Pain and the Joker who wish to have the world feel the same pain and suffering they felt their whole life. I find that very intriguing and a lot more relatable as human beings, where we often succumb to the environments and the shit thrown at us by life that we sometimes try to force that pain we feel onto others.

I never really took it in mind that Eren qnd Tanjiro were two sides of the same coin but u helped me realise that they are. And honestly thanks for helping me widen my mind when it came to Tanjiro because I honestly didn't know how to understand him. Keep up with this, u may be discovered for it.

Even the oldest story in history is a tragedy, gilgamesh has everything he could ever want, but when he loses enkidu, he is not only in grieving for his friend, but fearful of death despite being so strong.

Any good written tragic protagonist can be an example. Not just Eren or Tanjiro.

By looking at how stories develop certain archetypes you can learn. Same as how the best way you learn to draw is from references. Sorry if it wasn't what you expected tho!
