- Nowadays the Amp-less approach is quickly becoming a trend for modern musicians-like guitarists who appreciate a variety of pedals and amps, but don’t have the luxury of a roadie crew to lug all of them around.
Amp Academy inherits NUX TSAC-2K (White-box Amp Modeling) algorithm which delivers the sound and feel of world-class tube amplifiers in a super-portable stomp-box enclosure. And, its huge headroom and dynamic range is a pedal friendly platform.
In Studio:
Connect Amp Academy directly to a recording interface for excellent guitar tone, instantly, without the need to set up an amp or microphones. (Toggle IR OUT switches to UP position if you want to use the IR signal for 1/4” out. If you want to engage/disengage IR signal with DI OUT, please HOLD A/B foot switch and power the pedal. IR ON: A/B indicators will flash 3 times. IR OFF: A/B indicators flash will NOT flash.)
Amp Academy features 6 legendary amp models like Vintage(Fender Twin Reverb), Classic(Fender Vibro King), Modern(Mesa Boogie Mark I), Brown(Friedman HBE), Red(Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier), and Iridium(Bogner Uberschall). The iconic TSAC-2K (WHITE-BOX algorithm) Amp Modeling offers you realistic amp feeling and fast playability response.
1024 samples IR resolution with 3rd party IR loader capacity makes it easy to bring your favorite amp sound everywhere.
Note: 6 IR slots (with Amp slots), 12 Choptones custom IRs + 16 user slots 32bit/48kHz (AmpAcademy editor will convert the WAV format automatically.) You can get 10 free factory IRs while downloading edit software.
7 Independent moveable signal blocks with Send/Return effect loop
1024 samples IR resolution and 3rd party IR loader slot with auto format editor
The A/B footswitch lets you switch from clean amp style to crunch amp style immediately
SCENE footswitch can toggle SCENE1, SCENE2, SCENE3 sequentially, perfect for live needs
Wide FX section (compressors, boosts, overdrives, distortions, reverbs) + Noise reductor + 6 band Eq

Amazing playing again! The box sounds great too!
Glad you like it!✌
What a great bit of gear Jon. The sounds are awesome. Never mind the good price, it seems to be a great quality piece at any price and very well explained by you too.
Cheers 😊❤️👍
Thank you dear Tom ✌️❤️
Great review, as always! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it ✌️❤️
Dude your expressiveness is unreal. 👏 👏
Thank you so much 😀
Excellent demo as usual. Your playing is awesome.
Thank you kindly Mark✌️❤️
What a tasteful playing. Habe ordered a unit. Now I need telepathic playing lessons from you.

Wonderful and inspiring guitar playing!
Thanks a lot!
Superb playing as usual my brother!! Sweet!!!!

Great playing, Jon! Sounds like the Nux has some real useable tones
yep.✌❤
THIS would be a great combo with NUX Cerberus. These guys are killing the game right now. I have Cerberus, the Atlantic delay-reverb, Modcore pedal on my main board, and the NUX Horseman and Timecore on another smaller like practice board. NUX 4 the 🥇 🏆 win🤘🏾🕺🏾🕺🏾
✌♥
I have the Cerberus and I guess this would work well with it. What I have on my board is a Quilter Superblock which works great with the Cerberus. It's either a preamp with DI, a full-blown amp driving a cab or both at the same time.
@@RobCmusic Curious to know what the Cerberus sounded like FOH w the cab sim engaged? Never tried that as I thought the Cerberus was not a preamp as it were, but I guess w cab simulation, might as well be? I was thinking of putting AA at the end of my board after the Cerberus, so the Cerberus goes into AA and AA provides the amp simulation to FOH.
Awesome review. Thank you sir
My pleasure!✌️❤️
Some VERY tasty playing as usual!
Thank you ✌️❤️
Good to hear clean sounds executed so well, and you're dialing it in just right. The super high gain only demos are pointless. This sounds great and you're doing it some good justice!!
Glad you like it!✌♥
So no one wants to hear any high gain sounds? I want to hear them all. I'm personally glad there are a lot of different musical styles of demos on this pedal to choose from.
@@MarkCoffin Difference between any and only. High gain is fine but merely a single color within the spectrum.
@@tonepoet difference between Jon, Colin, Pete, etc. Choices, choices, choices. This thing is versatile and I'm glad to have so many different flavors of demos to choose from.
This box seems to me to sound quite good on just about every review. Your review is no exception, nice sounds and tasteful playing!
Thank you kindly!✌❤
Really good demo man! Been eyeing this thing for a while now, it basically would be the perfect pedalboard amp for my needs, especially with the balanced D.I. out.
Been a fan of NU-X stuff for a while now, I have an Ace of Tone (Tube Screaner / Bluesbreaker dual overdrive), first generation Mod Factory and an Ocean Machine (Delay / Reverb dual pedal with inbuilt three variations on both and even a nice shimmer on the plate reverb when pedal is held down) and I wouldn't trade them out, Ace of Tone and Ocean Machine have become real stables of my core sounds!
Also, I believe you can run this straight to an amp's power section through effect loop return with I.R. off and it can function fine as a monitor while you run the D.I. out to mixing desk with I.R. on! The functionality of this is mad! You could even buy two for the price of a single 100W Katana and have a fully functioning wet/dry stereo rig.
Cool
Amazing playing
Thank you✌️❤️
Tq 4 demo
you're welcome!
Great video my friend!
Thank you very much brother!! ✌♥
J Dude, this pedal sounds nice.. NUX has game these days. The pedals are also cheap, but sound so damn good and they keep putting out new and cool pedals.
Thats totally correct .✌❤
@@JonIsJustTooLoud Jon, I have a harder time impulse buying a Strymon pedal, but not a $60 NUX pedal. Their plex drive is crazy good, so is their Steel String Singer.
@@tjnugent62 The NUX Horseman OD is great 2!
Great for steely Dan and Doobie brothers type stuff. Love it.
.✌❤
I purchased the "Marshall" Nux pedal. It's very nice.
Good choice!.✌❤
Nice playing
Thank you ✌️❤️
Been waiting for this to attach at the end of a pedalboard, I guess they will sell a bunch ;-)
Yes...✌❤
Great demo. I think "modern" high gain might not be it's strong suit, but for everything else i'd take it. I already have the NUX NBP-5 for playing live on bass gigs that i have to go FOH, and it's pretty sturdy and good sounding. Even used it in the studio. Now, I also have to play guitar on some songs in the context of that band and I think this pedal might be the one for me. Even has an XLR compared to the Strymon Iridium, which seems like such a mistake on strymons part.
✌️❤️
You sealed it with me the Steely Dan type playing you do and you showed the Y Cable I have some indispensable effects I would put in the Loop and before.
I have an EHX Oceans 12 and a MXR Carbon Copy delay ( in Loop ) and a Strymon Riverside with expression Pedals set.
A Fuzz and a Phase 90 which I'd have before this Amp Sim.
When you say you would have a compressor and other pedals before this and the mods trems verbs and tremolos before...that is the reason I never went with a Strymon Iridium...no loop and you get a distorted reverb and delay which sounds horrible.
Cool thanks for sharing ✌️❤️
You are an amazing player and love your reviews! I play live in a punk band and am happy with my live sound for which I always get compliments. However, I am always looking to improve my recorded tones. Currently I use various analogue pedals into a Two Notes Cab M+ but always think I could get better sounds on playback. Currently considering a Strymon Riverside as I've heard good things about the range of sounds and the approach is different to just buying another MIAB-type pedal. Also, very interested in this Amp Academy and wondering how it compares in your view to the MOOER Preamp X2? I'm not looking for a plethora of different sounds which is why I stay away from the HX Stomp and POD GO as I don't want option paralysis, but really a few great sounds that translate well to a recorded mix. Thanks, John.
I don’t know about the comparison as I have not reviewed them yet. But this is a great unit to start with, given its price point ✌️❤️
Good unit.
If I was a busy gigging guitarist I'd look at one with a small harley benton power amp. Sorted on a small board with a 1x12 next to me di to fos
The thing is..you dont even need an amp! .✌❤
True if the monitors are good enough. I only use to playing amateur gigs where you always want your own monitor 🤣
✌️❤️
good job!!!! no blablabla.only sound!!!!
✌♥
You can hook up to a power amp and speaker just switch off the cab sim switch. Also you can switch on the IR in t h e software for DI XLR to a recording interface... Best of both... At the same time.. That's my setup... You dont need a FRFR speaker cab.. But you can just switch ON the IR switch...
✌️❤️
These seem very similar to the Atomic Amplifire Firebox units from of a few years ago. Very similar IMO.
After a very long time of playing exclusively with digital preamps? I just don't honestly gel with them, and the limitless options distract me more than help. I recently chose to make a dramatic commitment and investment with a Victory V4 preamp for direct recording. I still use digital for all post FX, power amp, and cab IR, but I wanted the closest thing to the front end of a "real" tube amp, but with all the capabilities of digital tracking, and all I had was a limited budget of $500. The V4 has done that for me in spades. Now my fuzz, wah, boost, and OD pedals react the way I remember and want them to, but I can now also use a midi foot controller for all my freaky chorus, delays, and reverb FX "in the box". Ulimately? I chose to give up a limitless amount of different "amps" for one committed core tone, and in doing that? I freed myself of endless searching and could focus more on post FX and mixing.
Not saying that all digital is all bad, but for me? I needed a more WYSIWYG approach to get me back on track.
I highly recommend any of the Victory V4 preamp pedals BTW. All tube analog and ZERO round trip latency up front is a glorious thing IMO
Great demo as always Jon!
Stay golden man.
Thanks for your sharing! ✌♥
@@JonIsJustTooLoud Thanks Jon! I get long winded talking gear sometimes. lol!
Did you here, Yoshi of BOSS is retiring?! Such a nice guy, and industry legend IMO. I wish him the best!
Love your content Jon. Does this pedal have the capability to run a tremolo effect internally without a separate trem pedal? I want to get as close to a Princeton or Deluxe Reverb kind of vibe and reverb and trem together is a must for me. Thanks!
No you can’t… try this effect instead..

Thanks for the review! it sounds amazing! Have you tried the headphone out jack? Does its sounds good?
No I did not
Great review, as always.
I read a bad review that said that there is a slight delay when switching channels / scenes. They also said that sometimes it makes a popping noise when switching. Could you tell me if this is true or not?
Thank you for your great reviews!
Unit is no longer with me✌️❤️
To me it sounds quite good. Great informative video. Im considering some amp in box option, (and yes this one is half price of strymon or walrus) but I would like to know how it cooperate with other drive pedals? Anyone tried? Thanks
✌♥
thanks for the video, I have a question, to play connected directly to the mixer without the computer the sounds are limited to the 6 of factory or can be downloaded in the unit the range of sounds that are available through the internet?
If you are talking about the IRs , yes you can download your own IRs. If you are talking about patches, I’m not too sure about that.. probably not✌️❤️
Great video as always...Jon really showcased what this pedal can do...However Jon, I have a question for you...Which is better for guitar recordings...? Is it pluggins like Amplitube 5 Max and Guitar Rig 6 or multi-effects pedal like the Nux Amp Academy...? I have both Amplitube 5 Max and Guitar Rig 6 and something similar to the Nux Amp Academy (Valeton GP--100 with Software, USB Connection and Audio Interface...) but haven't really try using it to record...I had tried using Amplitube 5 Max to record for a couple of times...Just the factory presets, and without post mixing and all that...It doesn't really sound anything like I expect it to be...I'm not sure with fine tuning of the effects...How much can the tone improve...I would really appreciate any advice given...Thanks in advance...!
Just note that The AAcademy is still mono..
for recording you can still use it in conjunction with what you have..plugin wise.
@@JonIsJustTooLoud Oh...That sounds like the best of both worlds...! Thanks Jon...!
Great playing man! How would you compare (sound-wise) with the Nux Solid Studio?
I like this!✌♥
Will I be able to use this with my ms50g? I love the idea of FX loop, so I would definitely grab back my delay that was left out of the rig because the Ms doesn't have send return.
Not sure
Hey Jon , how does it compare with ampero ii stomp tonewise and how does it feel in your hands? Regds from Greece ✌️
I love this...different usage..You can go stereo on the Stomp...This is strictly mono..more for the pedal board player.✌❤
Excellent video. Being totally new to this platform, I am a bit frustrated not being able to get similar sounds as you get. What connections do you make to get the external sound? Also, I am unable to load from NUX web site the Editor as a regular software into Win 10. I just get an exec file. What platform do you use? Thanks
You will need to download editor software from NUX…
@@JonIsJustTooLoud Thanks - I got it.
Hi Jon, hope you don't mind a question. A while ago I asked you how to make my guitar whine. You told me -buy compressor and overdrive- its a great sound but still I can't remove the sound of every single note being played. How do I sort it out? Many tnx
it's all about techniques ...takes time...✌❤
Hi do you know where to get a full list of midi implementation? If this does presets I will definitely upgrade from Salut studio. In 2022 any guitar pedals that I buy must have two things midi and presets. The amp Academy editor looks a lot like source audio. This is wonderful! However if they don’t have the presets than it does nothing for me on stage in my rack 🤔 smooth guitar playing by the way! 😎

Thank you so much 😃
Good stuff Jon. Do you know how well the unit would take an OD or boost in front?
I don’t really know ✌️❤️
@@JonIsJustTooLoud To answer my question, NUX had a live stream and the guy had a pedal in front of the AA. Looks like it will take it well.
does the Y send/return cable come with the Amp Academy?
Yes it does!✌♥
Hi Jon, great demo! on your personal opinion, does it feel like your playing thru a real amp? or similar i guess?
almost...✌♥
@@JonIsJustTooLoud thanks!
How well does it work as a pedal in a live situation, as opposed to as a computer interface?
Did you try making 3 vastly different preset "scenes" with different EFX, reverb, mod and delay settings and actually moving between them in a "live" situation by using the foot pedal to go between them?
I ask because another review I saw claimed that all the inbuilt FX and mods are always the same settings across all 3 scenes, only difference being whether the effect is turned on or off. This seems like a near deal breaker to me if true.
Yes they are right.. I think the NUX MG30 suits you better ✌️❤️
This is also true for the MG-30 - I own one and the scenes just give you the option to turn blocks on or off.
Great demo! Was wondering if this works for bass? :)
Don’t think it’s meant for bass ✌️❤️
@@JonIsJustTooLoud Appreciate the help Jon 🙏
How do you think it compares to the Strymon Iridium ?
I dont really know...✌♥
Do we still need a cab pedal with this pedal? Thanks
no..you can run it to a cab...or direct to a mixer
Can I use my Android laptop (Chromebook) with this?
not too sure..unless the program works with chrome...
Maybe the comparison is not accurate but if you had to chose between that pedal and the Yamaha thr30ii w … what would you chose … ? or let’s phrase it differently if you had already the thr30ii w what would be the added value of this pedal that would justify to buy it ? Thanks Jon !
Totally different comparison.✌❤
If you are not using an amp at all..this is for you.✌❤
@@JonIsJustTooLoud but the Yamaha is an amp right ? My configuration is that my pedal board is connected to both the amp and directly to my audio card (the output looper) connected to my computer and I am listening through monitors/speakers that are also connected to the audio card … if I would take that pedal I would then be able to remove the Yamaha amp, right ?
@@RomainG6409 yes Right
@@JonIsJustTooLoud great then ! I will be able to put my Yamaha in my living room and the Nux will replace it in my studio 🤪🤪
Why do you say you can't run to a 4x12 Marshall Cabinet? I run a Mono setup live I don't run a stereo rig. Can you run out to a 4x12 cabinet or not?
Because you will need a power amp to drive your 4x12
@@JonIsJustTooLoud Yes, I will run a Seymour Duncan power amp with it.
Interesting. Does it feel like an amp? Can you control the amp models and scenes from the pedal or do you have to use the software? I want something to use as a backup to my tube amp and for places that don't allow amps. I play blues rock and metal and need more high gain tones than anything. Just one clean channel with a touch of reverb. A gain channel with reverb and a really boosted or higher gain channel with delay and reverb. That's really all I need.
Thanks so much. I may have to get one. I may try their MG 300 though. ♥️🤘♥️

How does this compare to the fulltone fulldrive 2?
It doesn't. This is something totally different
@@quiksilver78 by that you mean it's that much better or just a different product
@@misstangshan95 different product. Fulltone FullDrive is an OD pedal with a boost switch. This is amp modelling ripped right out of the NUX MG-30
Different application...✌❤
@@JonIsJustTooLoud Can you connect it directly to an amp as a speaker?
My question to NUX is, where does that leave the Solid Studio pedal? This pedal makes the Solid Studio redundant IMO
I think the way to go to the next level is self-revolution. But for now, Solid Studio offers more power amp simulation, more IR slots, and higher IR resolution. Different applications for different users.
Yes Monk is correct...different applications
I will not be surprised if the SS comes a bit down in price. But the SS has more control over the IR on the control panel. If you read the NUX literature they are targeted for different applications. AA is not meant to go into your amp directly as I understand it.
@@gentrywhite4035 maybe not in front of the amp but I think you can plug it into the return jack of your amp if you have an FX Loop
@@quiksilver78 Yes, that is my understanding as well, which does lead to a little more confusion for me.
Do you have to a use a computer with it it? If so I do not want it.
No you don’t
And don’t buy if you don’t want to
The only usable high gain is iridium :/ The rest is like the mic is too far from the speaker...
✌💙
