We now have a 2018 Hyundai Kona and couldn't be happier with it. The 1.6 turbo charged motor really does separate from the other 1.6 motors without turbo. As expected, it does not produce a floating smooth ride as one gets in a larger car. At the same time, I found it to be a bit firmer that similar small crossover SUVs. The seven speed duel semi automatic/standard tranny is a blast. It sort makes the old geezer wish he was younger and could install pipes in the exhaust. The rest: the vast array of modern electronics in this vehicle takes time to learn, and at times, a co- driver is needed to operate everything when driving at highway speeds. Out of 1 - 10 , I will give the Hyundai 2018 1.6 Turbo, 9.0 to 9.5.

This video has the best editing I have seen in a car review. Whoever is responsible should get a raise. The Kona looks like a nice SUV/crossover/whatever, and the looks do not polarize me. It looks like a friendly happy beast, not an ugly mean unhappy beast as produced by the mentally questionable design crew at Toyota.

I purchased my Hyundai Kona Ultimate Ironman Edition a few days ago and I am in love with it. It is a fairly comfy ride and the seats are comfy. My only complaints are about the trunk space. I have to fold down the rear seats to fit my grandma's walker, which I didn't have to do with my 2013 Elantra. Also, the trunk is a manual lift instead of an auto lift. Other than that, I love it. It drives smooth, turns smooth, and the sport mode makes it fun to zip around in!

My Nana has a 2019 Kona SE and we absolutely love it I drive it once in a while and it’s so smooth and for a base model it’s got a big screen, backup camera, Apple CarPlay and android auto, lane assist, and forward collision warning which is insane to me how far Hyundai has come I personally have a 2006 Tucson and I absolutely love it but you can see a big difference from old to new Hyundai

Was looking for this before deciding to buy one a few weeks ago. The 2.0l trim in my country got de-accessorized so much. No sensors, no infotainment screen, no camera, no high tech safety features. At least it has push to start and keyless entry. The price ultimately became the deciding factor.

Great review. One thing I would like to recommend all car reviewers add to their analysis is, what type of fuel does the vehicle take? 89-93 octane? That also has a big influence on which vehicles I consider for purchase and I think would be helpful for other viewers. Thanks!

Great Review! But, did I hear that the Kona lacks Cruise Control? Well if it does. The review here was done well!

    • @pastorofmuppets325
      @pastorofmuppets325 5 лет назад +1

It has Cruise Control, it just doesn't have "Adaptive Cruise Control"... It's essentially where you set your CC for say 55mph, & then the car uses it's built in radar to monitor other cars in front of you to adjust your speed with the flow of traffic.
It's a pretty common option on cars nowadays, especially one that has so many other "radar based gizmos" like Lane Keep Assist, & Blind Spot Warning. They all use similar tech, so it's strange that it's not even offered.

SOOOOO true! I'm driving a base model Kona right now, and none of what's said in this review applies to the SE. I've tried and tried to come up with something nice to say about this car, but I just can't. If you're gonna get a Kona, make sure you can afford one of the upper trim levels.

This car will never require the AWD option. It's a good city car for bumpy roads, smaller parallel parking spots and grocery runs. The spec difference between base and ultimate might look like a steep price (from 18 to 27k) but I see a lot of these sell for 5-6k less than MSRP. So at the end of the day the base model is almost not worth it, especially at MSRP price. Get the 175hp and it's a great city choice.

Call me weird but I have driven those luxury vehicles that have whatever noise dampening feature so you don't hear anything outside and I find that personally irritating. I actually like hearing the wind noise as I drive. Most times when I can I drive with the windows open as part of that reason. So whenever I hear that a car has an ultra-quiet interior, It's automatically off my consideration list for purchase.

Nice car, but I'll stick with my 2015 Kia Soul for now. LOADS more room in a similarly sized car. The back seats, especially, are far more roomy, and the styling is aggressive without needing that plastic cladding. Speaking of the back seats, I am 6'1", and have my front seat fairly far back from the steering wheel. I get in back behind the drivers seat, and I have almost 3 inches of clearance between my knees and the back of the front seat! And the back seats are very comfortable! The Kia Soul is by far the better choice in this segment over all the cars he mentioned, including the Kona!

    • @johnfranklin5277
      @johnfranklin5277 4 года назад

Depends on you're situation, I buy what I LIKE THE BEST, not, how comfortable will the person be back there , couple times a year. Front seats can be moved up a few clicks to increase rear room, without causing issues for people in the front. However, if you're always having family in the backseat, then that's definitely a different situation.

I own a 2017 Elantra. They have a 2.0 Atkinson cycle variant of the Nu engine. I would stay away. Mine, and according to many reports the dealer told me they get, is they make a loud ticking/tapping noise when cold. It sounds like a diesel. Dealer reported Hyundai said it was normal because the metal shrinks in cold weather. I have never ever had a car do this in cold weather and I have had my fair share of bombs. I bought it used so am only covered up to 60000 miles. I said to Hyundai ok if this is so normal cover my car to the full 10 year 100000 mile warranty. They just keep giving me the run around. I mean if there is no issue with the car it would not cost them anything to give the full powertrain warranty. I have no confidence in the longevity of this engine and unfortunately it looks like they are putting these in more models like the Kona. Also I think these engines are in the Kia Forte and other Kia models.

    A few weird things
    - there is no blinking red led light to indicate the alarm system is engaged when you park the car
    - the optional heads up display is poor and turns off every time you park the car. The display is tiny and not worth
    - you cannot set the vents to center and windshield at same time. the vents are also too close to the body, always feel them even at the lowest setting
    - for some reason, all doors and the hood must be slammed quite hard to close them on this car
    - very little feet room under the front seats, for the rear passengers with the leather seats - the cables and hoses for the cooled seats are located very close to the floor, behind the seat. However knee space is good for rear passengers, unless the driver is very tall and the person sitting behind him is tall as well. But for children there is no problem
    - the trunk area is definitely on the small side
    - fabric seats comfort is marginal, leather seats have good comfort
    - only the higher trim offer display with GPS
    - no spare tire and no jack in the EV. only a useless tire repair kit without jack.
    - door panel rest is soft padded and nice, however the center arm rest padding is very stiff, feels like hard plastic
    - the stitches on the leather steering wheel are very protruding and uncomfortable on the hands
    - the glove box sits very low on this car, front passenger leg room feels tight, the glove box opens directly on his knees
    - terrible rear left side blind angle for the driver, almost no view when switching lines to the left or engaging on the highway
    - the underneath of the Kona EV is very low to the ground - the battery shield is really close to the road
    - all parking sensors are extremely exposed to the smallest impact on the bumper covers - such as in a parking lot. The slightest impact will damage these sensors. On the Kona EV, the charging port is directly exposed to any front end damage, very costly fix. On the Hyundai
Ioniq this port is even more exposed, poor choice from Hyundai
    - some Kona EV had problems with the 12v battery at very low miles, strangely the battery drains quickly wen the ignition is at ON without the electric engine being started. The car will give a low 12v battery warning even after only a few minutes with the ignition ON and the motor off. When the 12v battery goes flat (or bad) you are left stranded and the door must be opened with the mechanical key (inside the key fob). It is a good idea to keep a battery charger and to regularly check the health of the 12v battery
    - on models equipped with blind spot assist, the radar sensors go regularly bad on all cars - these are extremely expensive to replace at $500 each, most times the sensor just slight moves on its bracket causing the calibration to go off
    - regardless of what Hyundai owners try to make you think, Hyundai cars do have problems even at low miles, mostly with sensors (not to mention the widespread gasoline engines mechanical problems from 2016-2019). Be sure to purchase an extended warranty
    And a few positives
    - nice high sitting seats, minivan like. Seat comfort is not the best, but good leg and headroom for tall drivers
    - easy entry for both front and rear passengers
    - very good driving position with the steering wheel at the right place. Excellent steering wheel thickness
    - nice steering/handling feeling. The steering is on the heavy side, with a nice tight feeling to it
    - very comfortable and bumps absorbing suspension on the Kona EV. Comfortable highway ride
    - it has been told the Kona is noisy on the highway. I think it's exaggerated. You can hear tire noise and it's certainly lacking wheel arch insulation - can easily be fixed but this is not meant to be Lexus quiet
    - very nice center console with D P and R buttons instead of gear selector knob
    - the interior panels are mostly plastic but well put together and solid. The only strange hard plastic is on the lower window frame, however the window frame is too high to rest your arm (hag out your arm) so most surely no one will be driving like this
    - cabin interior is very nicely designed and looking, with the exception of the center vents which are very low and close to the front persons

I kinda like the styling for some reason. However if I was gonna get something that small I'd probably lean toward the Renegade just in case I had a chance to go offroad any.

Who else would like some BTS of Micah creating this music. I'm envisioning a home studio complete with headphones, a keyboard, maybe a guitar, and of course a curious family dog/cat wandering into the shot :)
