- The windshield on my 2004 Honda Element has been cracked for years. After last winter the crack had reached half way across and I decided it was time to do something about it. It just so happens Kyle Kiss, son of Rich Kiss of Kiss auto glass, is a fan of my show. He stopped by the shop one day with his dad and I asked if they would be interested in making a video about replacing the windshield on my Element. The rest is in the video.
I know a little about replacing windshields, Rich knows a LOT. I learned quite a bit making this video. I hope you do too.

I did it as a n00b. I rented the chaulk gun cause I'd create a mess otherwise. It was easy. Ford Focus 2002.
He picked an easy car to work with tho to some are worse than others
I’ve been in the business 25 years and watched this video in hopes he could show me an easier way to reinstall the two a-pillar moldings but we do it exactly the same way so I’m thinking there isn’t another way. The a-pillar moldings on this car or some of the worst designed in the business but that’s just the way it is. There are a few more details concerning the a-pillar moldings that had to be done before reinstalling them that were not shown in this video that make this car a real pain in the pooper. The rest of the windshield job is straightforward and simple. He did a great job and uses old school cold knife techniques like I do. Old school is still good. Well done!
Totally agree. I just got mine replaced professionally but the columns are a little loose towards the bottom, consequently The rubber gaskets are not pressed tight against the glass. Probably the plastic clips are broken or not holding properly. Anyway I am taking it back so they can fix it. Definitely it has to be a proper way to reinstall them.
Which cars have the a pillars
@user-cg7jp7jt4v all cars have a pillars but not all have a pillar moldings. The a pillar is the left and right vertical posts that go up from the hood to the roof. The big plastic moldings on this car have a complicated clip system that attaches it to the body of the car and covers the edge of the windshield. Stupid design on this one. One of the worst.
As an autoglass installer of 10 years, I have to say this video is spot on. 100% accurate information and the true "right way" to install. Good job Kiss autoglass.

As far as I know, the Betaprime 5504G Primer that he was using in the video is capable of bonding and sealing to bare metal. Usually when we get a rust spot on pinch welds, we grind off all the rust, clean the metal, then seal it with that Primer product to ensure the rust won’t be an issue anymore. It’s the same with any body work on metal parts of the body. If the rust isn’t dealt with, it’s going to keep creeping under the paint and corrode further through the metal and cause more problems down the road.

That was one of the nicest professionals I ever saw working. Even my uncle doing "similar" work doesn't have the patience to answer a single question to his customers, not even mentioning talking to camera. Simply cool! Both of you!!
I work at a body shop and see this done almost daily. This guy knows his stuff. The only caveat I have about this install is the rust. It is very hard to stop and will eventually cause the windshield to leak and/or crack. There are a lot of hacks out there. But Eric has picked one of the good guys. Nice job!

GLB Productions I also agree. Just watching Rich illustrates to me that I need to find a new "glass guy". You can tell the quality is there. My windshield leaks in the driver's corner and you can easily look through the glass from the outside and see the path of water infiltration right through the sealer. I liked the advert for Kiss Auto Glass at 15:42 (you can use that as a customer testimonial on your website)! Do you recycle the old windshield? Just remember don't bring a long knife to a caulk gun fight! That is some gun!

***** Completely true! That is one of the reasons why I service my car by myself or with a friend. There are still a few things that I am really "afraid" of. One is the AC and the other is glass.

It's funny the people trying to pick this install a part. Mr. Kiss installed the glass properly. I can assure you that you don't find many that will take some of the measures he took to do a great job. I have been doing it for 16 years of my 36 years of life. I've had no training other than someone showing me how to remove and replace the glass. They didn't fix scratches or rust, check body seams, or anything. Just cut it out and shoot a bead and stick it in. I had enough common sense to figure out bare metal will rust with water standing around the pinch weld for days after rain. I had to learn a lot of what Rich just showed you by trial and error. Any newer installers should be thankful for this video to teach them the proper way to do this job. If i had installed this glass, it would look almost exactly like the procedure rich used, step by step. I do a lot of wholesale glass replacement for car dealers and body shops. I'm pretty much the "cheap guy" they refer to in a lot of these videos. I really wish some of these shops wouldn't lump us into a category hacks just because of our price. Just because it's cheap doesn't mean it isn't done right. I know it happens with cheaper sbops but I see a lot of the so called "pros" $300 install that's not up to par as well. I also hear a lot of the RUclips guys talking about oem quality glass. I'm noticing most all windshields are made poorly now. I use pilkington glass as much as possible but sometimes a car dealer is not willing to pay enough to get it so I will use a cheaper Chinese glass as long as they know up front what they're getting. For the record, a lot of the glasses used by the manufacturers now are Chinese glasses. There really isn't a glass made that is superior to all others and I've used them all. Anyway, good job Rich. It's good to see someone else in this profession that takes pride in their work as do I. Good luck in the future.

They're not they used to be for sure. I rarely had any problems until about 5 years ago. I'm not really crazy about any of them now. It's getting harder to find quality glass now. Especially in tempered glass. ATI is about the worst imo.
He did it 99% right, he did not remove those mouldings right, you push them in towards the glass not just rip them off, that's why they were so loose after
How does FYG glass compare to Pilkington? I'm concern about the fit and thickness. An auto place mentioned PGW. How does PGW compare with the other 2 brands? Does it matter if the company is not AGSC certified? One company was Dinitrol certified. Is that equivalent to being AGSC certified?
How do I pick a good glass company?
I'm just starting training to do installs, and everything that you covered here is what my buddy has shown me so far. Since I'm doing most of the prep work right now, I've not really done the actual remove/install portion yet. This video makes for a great study guide to help memorize the steps in detail. Thank you for sharing your experience, and putting together such a great and informative video.
Awe installs? What? That makes no sense, you surely started out removing the windscreen? Well anyway it was ages ago you commented, could of told you a few secrets that I was never told, to fitting the glass, otherwise you can get turned off fitting glass by the impossibility of holding a heavy windscreen over a car by yourself, some fitters actually hate being sent fitting by themselves because of the fear of trying to get the heavy glass over the car or one of them giant 4X4, stand in the door well and lean over the car from higher with the glass tight against your body, you need a foot stool to climb up to the door well on the high SUV or trucks, if your American., You may already know it by now, the four arm rests on the cars hood or quarter penal, I'm right handed so my left hand holds the screen up because I'm resting all the weight of the glass on the car, as long as your arms not going to dent the metal with a pointed elbow, you have the armed rest, you will never check this but in case your still trying to be a fitter, I saw 3 guys come and go because nobody took them through step by step or told them that they don't need arms like Arnold Schwarzenegger.

I helped our glass guy install a rear glass on a Bentley. This was a $2400 piece of glass(the dealership's cost) Talk about a scary day!

Tire machines ALWAYS scratch rims. Keeping it minor and unobvious is all you can do. We apologized to one BMW owner and I took the time to compliment him on his car because he actually takes care of it, and after the scratch he tipped me! Cool guy. :)

This reminds me of a friend of mine who is a machinist. He got to work one day and his boss had a mold already set up in the mill. His boss told him " that's a $90,000 dollar mold, don't scratch it".

Thank you so much for this video. I started my business a few months ago and everyone is asking me to replace. And Rich was correct there arent any schools or classes around here that teach how to do this. I will be stocking up on the correct tools and supplies to do this right, because the name of the game is quality and safety for the customers.
Great job of installing the new glass, everybody needs to be good at something and Rich appears to be an amazing installer. Years of experience and really pays attention to the details to avoids trouble later and makes customers very satisfied with his work. Thanks Eric.
Overall, this was a pretty good install. There are a few things I would recommend changing, but this is quality work!
My ideas I offer would be:
Invest in some quality suction cups. We use them, and it helps with the installation process of the job. You can grab the cups and not have to worry about the glass going anywhere, or getting your hands on the primed area.
DOW has a primer that works on both glass and metal now. It's amazing stuff, and works wonders. They also have a urethane equivalent to Express called ONE. Which has the same set time, but adheres to aluminum better and doesn't interfere with radio signal if it's an issue.
I would use paper towels instead of a rag to wipe pinch welds down, and a different towel to wipe the dash.
And a 30 minute job is quite possible, if you have 2 people who are working on it at the same time. That's how our shop works, and we consistently get jobs done in 25-45 minutes. Some faster than others.
Other than that, this was a pretty solid install, and I would love to work for this company if I was in the area.
What was the spray he put on the glass at 23:20? Also, what was that highlighter thing he used after that?
That was glass cleaner, then he used a primer stick afterwards.
Never seen anyone use that sort of force on the side covers. He must ruin a lot of them. Other than that very good.
That is standard practice on Elements sorta, takes about that much force but you push in towards middle of the car.
So I would not have you do an install for me. You obviously do not treat rust issues and neither does Rich. That alone is reason enough that this is a very bad install.
I have been working for Auto Glass Now for 3 days so far and i love it. I have my moments where I get irritated but at the end of the day when im done. I leave knowing I did a great job. Take your time. Absolutely always ask questions. Especially being the new guy. If you make a mistake do not ignore it. Go back and fix it. Good luck and god bless you ❤😇
My Tacoma had a windshield replacement before I got it, but they scraped most of the paint off as they removed the old sealer, and only put new sealer on the bare metal, about 6 years after I got it, it started all rusting out, I took out the windshield, scraped, sanded, wire brushed, then SAND BLASTED,every inch, to get the rust out of the pits, then 2 coats of epoxy primer, 2 coats of urethane primer, then 2 coats urethane top coat, waited 3 days Then installed a new windshield, To much work, so if there is nothing wrong with the old sealer, and no rust, leave it and do what Kiss did. I think it simply gives a good appreciation for somebody's experience, time and energy. I sure as hell won't want to do this twice if I have a leak. Call the professionals. You're like the new Mr. Rodgers, taking us on tours and talking with people about something special.

Good job ! I have 40 years as an installer plus management. Good to see the old way of installing. I remember pushing with my head what a pain. When the eq came in the 90's it was the greatest thing to happen to save the body. I am 65 and still install well stop some day. Getting to craze with all teck in the glass now. I always loved my job and still do.

Many thanks to Eric for filming this and the company for allowing it to be filmed. Love the humor with the clear windshield. On BMWs (E30 at least) it's just a gasket and no adhesive. I replaced one on my old 86' 530i.

Good job, very professional guy! I'm impressed how sharp the tools were. Cut through the old stuff like butter!
One thing not mentioned is that the W/S is an integral part of the structure of the vehicle and actually part of the SRS. When an airbag blows, the W/S has the job of remaining intact and deflecting the passenger bag towards the occupant. A good quality urethane is absolutely necessary.

Audioquest56 Some vehicles also need the windscreen as a crutch for the roof in a roll over, bad prepping and seal can cause the screen to detach and the roof to collapse more and can cause injury to the occupants of the vehicle.

Ya know. I've seen some movie crashes with great window installation and very poor installation. It definitely makes a difference in rollovers.
Movies are not a great place to learn much, but some of the vehicles they crash are legitimate and not just props.
Chuck Norris was big on that on his Texas Ranger show. Using the real items in the crashes. Sure for some spectacular crashes they'd use hidden ramps and things.
One time at a rally i saw a civic that boke its winshield in the previous stage borrow an evo winshield from a friendly team (probably 6 - 8 inches wider than the stock civic windshield), they used something like 6 rolls of duct and gorilla tape and somehow got the safety inspectors to ok it... was a beautiful thing.

Great craftsmanship, and awesome demonstration or this matter. I have rust problem near my windshield on my 93 Chevy G30 Sports van. I was doing research to correct this, but needed to know the proper way to install the windshield with gusto!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING! I liked the video, there aren't too many people who know what goes into windshield installation. There's always gonna be someone who knows everything about everything, like some of the commenters here. Sure, there's some things I may do differently, but we all have our own technique. Experience is the best teacher, and I can see that you have done many a shield. Unfortunately, in today's society, the focus is more on getting it done quick as you can, as opposed to a good quality, take your time, and do it right mentality. I've been doing shields just as long, and it was fun to watch this, because I do most of what you did the same way. And like you said, you can tell when it's been done poorly, it happens, and sometimes it makes your job a little more involved, and the people that say they know a guy who can get it done in a half hour, don't know jack about installing windshields, just sayin'

I've been a professional windshield installer for over 15yrs this video is great. Very professional, very detailed i would have loved to work with that guy. He is so right price is not the way to go.

his arms are tools too! :D i helped a friend in his workshop with a couple of windshields and it almost always was a two man job to cut them out.
tasty2choc yeah i noticed that as well, those blades look like it take a LOT of force to cut through
tasty2choc Not always a 2 man job, depends on the size of the windscreen, and if it was replaced already, if so the tech could have shot a huge bead of glue and that makes the cutout process irritating. Still love the autoglass business though!

Thanks a lot Eric for such a great video and thanks a lot to the "extremely professional and accurate" Rich from Kiss Auto Glass. I find this video particularly really helpful; because, nowadays, windshield replacement is "rarely" done right. I know a lot of friends who replaced their windshields at "cheap auto glass shops", where they got thugs from the streets replacing their windshields causing water leaks, deep grooves into vehicles' frames, rust, etc., which, in turn, forced their vehicles eventually into the junkyard.
I was borrowing a friends 92 Mighty Max and a rock hit the windshield The Glassmen said the glass wasn't available so I found one in junkyard for 35 bucks and removed with piano wire trick. Asked Glassmen if they could install they said 200 clams just for labor. So I watched this video and ordered the supplies online and replaced windshield this morning, it went well and I saved a lot of dough. It took,me longer than it would have taken a pro but at least i didnt have to pay those pirates Thank you so much guys

Thank you very much guys, I never spend more than 15 minutes in a video, but in this case it was a pleasure, you were not only funny but with a pretty good language. I always hear to many S's and F's and they think that's normal. Excellent presentation.
The newer the vehicle, the more crucial *PROPER* glass installation is. The glass has become a structural element of vehicle design and improperly installed glass can be dangerous. The glass plays a major structural component of rollover protection (see roof crush tests). Glass quality is also as important as the installation. Cheap glass can be both visually and structurally inferior to OEM glass.
I'm in the collision repair industry and this is no place for amateurs or hacks. Don't cheap out of this job, be careful about who you let replace your glass. Shopping by price out of Craigslist is not the place to be...
ratbert86 The problem is that people are in many ways greedy. So are the glass companies. People wanting the cheapest price and companies wanting to charge the most with the cheapest output of materials ends up making some bad quality of work happen.

My neighbor owns his own auto glass business and I got to work with him many times. Everything that was showed in this video is how I learned it, except when installing the glass we would put suction cups on it and drop it into place.
Its nice to see someone actually do a proper job in their profession, so many mechanics/autoglass technicians etc just try to take advantage of its customers and do a cheap quick crappy repair.

couple of time I had my windshield replaced. The installer said to me. For a proper cure, to turn on the defrost on heat. Is that a standard practice? It wasn't mentioned on this show.
Rafael A. Nieves They were probably using one of the cheaper urethane materials to glue the windshield in, so it needed higher temperatures to cure.
Rafael A. Nieves Some urethanes cure from heat and humidity, depends on the make of the glue. You don't really have to turn on the defroster

yeah he broke the white ones off and didn't glue them back on so when he smacked them down you could see how loose they were, that car was definitely getting air nose from those loose trim pieces

i know of a windscreen that can be fitted by anyone, and can be done in 20 mins, land rover defender, why you might ask? because it uses a rubber seal and isn't bonded, downside? that rubber seal shouldn't be called a seal, it should be a called a sieve!
You should use silicone sealant in the outer lip to prevent water ingress.

The cheapest quote isn't necessarily the best option. This video proves that nicely. Automotive glass fitting is a profession in itself. Being in the panel repair industry myself, I have seen a lot of rogue windscreen fitters. Richard takes pride in his job and uses quality materials throughout. Keep up the great work. overall I give him a 9 for good work ,priming his scratches and a uniform v bead, however a small amount of rust is an enormous problem! you can not simply prime over rust, that's like putting a bandaid on cancer! it needs to be sanded down to bare metal and then primed, otherwise the rust (cancer) is still decaying underneath the primer! and will eventually start leaking! this also effects the structural integrity of a vehicle and therefore would not meet ratings of a crash test or meet the manufacturers standards, the auto glass safety council ( the place that certifies auto glass technicians) would fail this Intallation!
The International Grammar Spelling and Punctuation Institute, (IGSP), would fail your commentary!!!
Definately a bandaid and window will have to come out in the future. He should have sanded it down and at least use a rust converter so the rust does not spread. Great video install tho!

Thanks for a great and informative video from you both I was using my friends 1992 Mitsubishi Mighty Max unfortunately I was driving on the highway and a stone from a dump truck hit the windshield completely cracking it I tried to get the windshield and glass companies we're telling me that this windshield wasn't available the two of them that did have the windshield wanted over $400 to do the job so I went to the junkyard and found a windshield for $35 I removed it using the piano wire trick and it worked like a charm I watch this video ordered all of the supplies I needed online and replace the windshield myself and it was easy thank you for helping me and others by making this video

For me it adds emphasis to keep my attention and allows a better chance of an incredibly widespread target audience to understand the meaning behind the statement. It also helps ensure that there is enough dynamic change throughout the video to keep you from getting the "lecture effect". They both did a great job in my book!
