  • On July 18, CCG co-hosted an event with CITIC Press to launch the Chinese edition of Singapore veteran diplomat Kishore Mahbubani's new book, the Asian 21st Century, as part of the “China and Globalization” series. During the event, the author, the publisher, and think tank experts discussed this new publication, whose English edition has been downloaded over 3 million times after its release on January 1, 2022.
The 21st century is experiencing the most rapid development of any century in human history while the world also goes through a re-balancing of power between West and East. What changes will we see in world politics? How will humanity live through the twenty-first century amid escalating geopolitical competition and power shifts? One of the greatest geopolitical changes in the 21st century is the peaceful rise of China and the return of Asia, which has attracted the world’s attention. Will we have an Asian century? How will it be different with the previous British and America centuries? What changes will the Asian century bring to globalization and global governance? These questions raise many thoughts and predictions.
The book The Asian 21st Century, authored by Singapore veteran diplomat Kishore Mahbubani, is part of the “China and Globalization” series and has received broad attention internationally. Offered as an open access book, it tallied over 3 million downloads after its release on January 1, 2022, more than ten times the average number of downloads for academic publications.
Kishore Mahbubani is a veteran diplomat, student of philosophy, and has published many books. Mahbubani is currently a Distinguished Fellow at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore. He has been privileged to enjoy two distinct careers, in diplomacy (1971 to 2004) and in academia (2004 to 2019). In diplomacy, he was with the Singapore Foreign Service for 33 years (1971 to 2004), serving twice as Singapore’s Ambassador to the UN and President of the UN Security Council in January 2001 and May 2002. Mr. Mahbubani entered academia in 2004, when he was appointed the Founding Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, NUS. Mahbubani writes and speaks prolifically on the rise of Asia, geopolitics and global governance. His works include Has China Won? Can Asians Think?, Has the West Lost?, The New Asian Hemisphere, The Great Convergence: Asia, the West, and the Logic of One World, Beyond the Age of Innocence, and The ASEAN Miracle: A Catalyst for Peace (co-authored with Jeffery Sng). His books and articles in the New York Times, Washington Post, Financial Times and Foreign Affairs have earned him global recognition as “the muse of the Asian century.” He was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2019.
CCG was very honored to take on the task of developing a Chinese-language edition of the book, which has been published by CITIC Press Group. This book consists of essays written by Mahbubani that explore the challenges and dilemmas faced by the West and Asia in an increasingly interdependent world village and intensifying geopolitical environment.

When we were a lot younger, Americans used to lecture the rest of the world in similar tone but today we have Prof. Kishore talking in the same vein; thus proving him that the world has indeed changed! As US and the West are now talking of preventing trades via the threat of forces! Indeed that proves the fact that when you cannot compete equitably you talk of confrontation against anyone who choose to differ with your views. This is the situation today when they felt threatened just because they can't compete!

Hello, I am a worker with a Chinese "peasant identity" (under Chinese identity politics and household registration system, farmers are considered the lowest end of the population). After Professor Qin Hui's ideological enlightenment and awakening, I very agree with Professor Qin Hui's point of view: in the current context of globalization, the constitutional democratic system is being challenged by the autocratic Chinese model (that is, bad money drives out good money). Democratic countries around the world must deeply understand and understand the fact that since the CCP came into power in 1949, hundreds of millions of Chinese farmers have worked hard to pay public food, agricultural taxes The construction of water conservancy projects for free provided the CCP with the original financial accumulation at the beginning of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Under the family planning policy, Chinese farmers were forced to have abortions, ligation and ring fencing, and payment of fines for excess births. Farmers were restricted by the household registration system in rural areas and could not move freely, leading a serf like life. During the three-year period from 1959 to 1961, there were no natural disasters at all. It was entirely due to Mao Zedong's policies such as the "Great Leap Forward" and "Great Steel Refining" that local officials, in response to Mao Zedong's policies, falsely reported ultra-high grain yields and plundered the surplus food of farmers, which resulted in the tragic starvation of 40 million people in human history. The vast majority of these were farmers, At that time, not a single Communist official starved to death. After China's reform and opening up in 1980, the first generation of farmers went to cities to work as construction workers, sanitation workers, cleaners, and miners Waiting for the most tiring and dirty jobs, China joined the WTO in the early 21st century under the background of economic globalization. For example, the second generation of farmers entered red sweatshops as workers, manufacturing cheap goods for the world. Due to the lack of independent trade unions to fight for their legal rights, they could not enjoy social welfare benefits such as work-related injuries, unemployment, medical care, elderly care, housing, and children's education in urban areas, Their children were forced to return to rural areas for education due to their household registration as "farmers" and the "school district housing" system, resulting in the world's largest tragic situation of left behind children and elderly people living alone in rural areas in China. Nowadays, the first generation of farmers have become old and lose their ability to work. They are ruthlessly driven back to the countryside and struggle to make ends meet with a monthly pension of over 100 yuan. The minimum standard for urban household registration is over 2000 yuan per month, which is more than 20 times that of rural household registration. Communist Party officials enjoy privileges and benefits, and the annual medical and health expenses are as high as several million yuan. National level officials spend one billion yuan on tourism in a year. Due to the enormous sacrifices and contributions of these two generations of Chinese farmers, China has become the world's second-largest economy. However, the Chinese farmer group has received exploitation and negative welfare treatment time and time again in the process of national wealth distribution and redistribution, while civil servants and high-ranking officials within the Communist Party system enjoy privileges and high welfare treatment. The Communist Party government utilizes the advantage of low human rights and cheap labor to attract a large amount of international financial capital investment, making China the largest red sweatshop in the world. The reason why cheap goods made in China are popular worldwide is due to the "low human rights" and "negative welfare" of the Chinese "farmer identity" worker group. Even if they work overtime for extended periods of time every day, they barely survive with a meager income. To change the Communist Party government's use of the "low human rights" and "negative welfare" system of China's vast vulnerable group of farmers in unfair competition in the globalized trade market, democratic countries around the world have the responsibility to supervise and pressure the Chinese government to demand an increase in the human rights and social welfare protection of hundreds of millions of Chinese farmers and disadvantaged groups, in order to solve the problem of trade fairness under economic globalization. The trade sanctions imposed by the United States and anti-dumping measures by the European Union cannot solve the problem of trade deficits. If democratic countries believe that the human rights and welfare protection of hundreds of millions of Chinese farmers and vulnerable groups are not related to you, it will gradually lead to a decrease in the standards of wages and welfare protection for labor in democratic countries (such as left-wing political parties in the United States proposing policies to reduce social welfare protection), because although labor in various countries cannot move freely, But capital is profit driven and can flow freely. Which capitalist doesn't like a labor market like China without strong trade unions. If the human rights and welfare standards of Chinese "farmer identity" workers cannot be gradually raised to align with those of democratic countries, then the human rights and welfare standards of democratic countries' workers can only be gradually lowered to align with those of Chinese "farmer identity" workers (this can be seen from the documentary "American Factory"). Democratic countries around the world cannot turn a blind eye to the history of labor tears behind China's "peasant identity" after enjoying nearly 40 years of cheap goods and economic benefits made in China. Please stop having illusions about the CCP and implementing appeasement policies. While paying attention to the human rights of Xinjiang, Tibet, Hong Kong and people in exile, it is more important to pay attention to the human rights situation of all Chinese people, Only by constantly putting pressure on the CCP to improve the human rights of all Chinese people and the welfare protection of vulnerable groups, cultivate the rights awareness of Chinese citizens and taxpayers, help China establish free and independent trade unions, learn from the welfare accountability of Polish Solidarity Trade Union, force financial openness and budget transparency, will China gradually embark on the path of constitutional democracy. A free and democratic China is indispensable for the stability and peace of the world, and it is also a responsibility that democratic countries around the world cannot evade, because we are all citizens of the Earth. I hope that people with conscience around the world can work together to make constitutional democracy overcome dictatorship, let good currency overcome bad currency, and make this world more civilized.

21:33 22:16 Hi Professor Mahbubani, Singapore is proud and fortunate to have you and Minister Yeo.
With regards to western media, I observed that The Straits Times and Channel news asia "syndicates" a fair bit of what they published from the likes of Reuters and Ap. How can that help in spreading the good news about the Asian 21st Century when our own mainstream media is inadvertently peddling western narratives?

    • @miliashalim3705
      @miliashalim3705 10 месяцев назад +9

You are absolutely correct. We as an ASEAN community also feel the news provided bh that two media in Singapore are more representing the western media than the Asian itself.
That is why most of us feel that Singapore is actually part of western security block.

Totally agree that CNA and Straits Times are repeating news from Reuters, AP, AFP and other Western media. These are state funded media that profess to objectivity and neutrality.
Yet the China/Russia/West relations are reported with statements, views and interviews predominantly from the West. Views from Asia and South East Asia are seldom sought and reported.
Not enough effort has been made for a balanced view. This could be because of the ease in getting Western centric news and its media staff are trained in the West.
If you read and listen to news reports of Western media, they slant their news to present a common narrative of China, Russia and other adversaries as aggressive, oppressive, corrupted, untrustworthy and secretive.
As long as Singapore media are taking the easy way out, they continue to be extension of Western media and do not serve the information needs of Singapore and this region. I believe Singapore can do better.

Kishore is a rare academic who dares to speak up to provide a counter balance to the biased narrative of Western mainstream media. Admirably, he is doing it to bring peace to the world. On the other hand, the Western mainstream media strive to create divisions and tension. But Kishore's voice is mainly marginalised by media in the West.
The reslity is that Western biased media, dominate the international media space. China needs to recognise that international media are mainly in English or translated from English. May I make the following suggestions:
    1. Speeches by Chinese officials should carry official English translated version so that they can be more readily reported.
    2. Do have more English competent speakers and even English native speakers on Chinese media staff. Have competent English speaking spokespersons to handle Q&As. They can serve as interface between media and Chinese officials.
    3. Spend more efforts to explain patiently China's action and to counter false narratives, and with facts and figures. Never stop explaining the positive roles that China is playing. Avoid telling others to learn their lessons as they are not school children. Your audience are not Western elites but Western voters.
    4. Get more corporations and individuals to contribute to independent media which are struggling to survive creating objective contents. Remember US spends $500m supporting media and social media around the world.

Does India pose a barrier to the BRICS currency and de-dollarization? Does India pose a barrier to de-dollarization and BRICS cohesion? Will India's participation impede the ability of the BRICS to cooperate?
Since India has rejected the new BRICS currency, possibly in response to pressure from the United States, this could lead to the group's dissolution due to the US exploiting the long-standing conflict between India and China.
Numerous academics argue that India's abandonment of the Global South violates its commitments to the BRICS. The valid argument is that India cannot substantially influence the cohesion of the BRICS group, regardless of how hard the US-led West wishes or presses India.
Since many countries are interested in joining BRICS and so many potential new members have expressed interest, it is plausible that the group will expand its de-dollarization objectives.
The United States hopes that by utilizing India and China's longstanding rivalry to its advantage, it will be able to achieve success and cause the BRICS to fail. This will have far-reaching effects on the cohesion of the BRICS and, by extension, the group's viability.
The United States exploits the protracted conflict between China and India by proposing technology transfers in exchange for India's potential interference in BRICS-related initiatives. The United States also seeks to contain China to preserve its hegemonic supremacy. The United States is placing a wager on the likelihood and danger of Indian BRICS sabotage. Due to their long-standing hostility towards China, the West, led by the United States, would benefit from exploiting and manipulating their geopolitical advantage over the BRICS nations.
The BRICS countries are committed to authentic collaboration and sovereign equality. The BRICS are furthering multilateral and egalitarian international relations, and their practice and expansion of these relations demonstrate their rejection of the existing flawed international order and power distribution. This action will significantly contribute to establishing a new global order, even if it takes longer than anticipated.
The presence of the BRICS nations was indispensable. These nations attempt to establish an independent, mutually beneficial relationship based on parity. As a result of the inevitable trend and the shared objective, the cooperation and cohesion of the BRICS nations have reached unprecedented heights, contributing to the increased allure of the organization. The BRICS geopolitical entity will have a significantly more significant impact on the present state of international affairs. Consequently, the global order established by the United States will face new challenges.
The fact that each independent BRICS country can confidently assert that it is on par with every other member shows that no single government is in charge of or using the BRICS. This is one of the reasons why the United States is so intrigued by the BRICS nations. As other organization members have stated, entering might be possible even if the United States is only interested in joining BRICS. The United States could legitimately join BRICS if it so desires.
India has no significant impact on the cohesion of the BRICS group. Since many nations are interested in joining BRICS and there are many potential new members, the organization will likely expand its de-dollarization agenda and objectives.
The United States hopes to use China and India's long-standing rivalry to undermine the BRICS group. This will significantly impact the cohesion of the BRICS and, consequently, the organization's viability. The United States proposes technology transfers in exchange for India's potential interference in BRICS-related initiatives by exploiting the long-standing conflict between China and India. Additionally, the United States seeks to prevent China from maintaining its hegemonic dominance. The United States is betting on the possibility and likelihood of Indian sabotage of the BRICS. Given their long-standing hostility towards China, it would be advantageous for the West, led by the United States, to exploit and manipulate its geopolitical advantage over the BRICS nations.
The BRICS nations are dedicated to authentic cooperation and sovereign equality. The BRICS are pursuing multilateral, egalitarian international relations, and their engagement and expansion of these ties demonstrate their rejection of the current global structure and power balance. Even if it takes longer than anticipated, this action will significantly contribute to establishing a new international order.
The BRICS nations had to arise. These nations attempt to establish an independent, mutually beneficial relationship based on parity. Due to the unstoppable trend and the shared objective, cooperation and cohesion among the BRICS nations have attained new heights, contributing to the group's increasing appeal. The geopolitical organization called BRICS will have a much greater impact on world affairs. As a result, the world order in which the United States is dominant will face new difficulties.
Each independent BRICS nation can affirm unequivocally that it is on par with every other member, demonstrating that no one government controls or utilizes the BRICS as a weapon. This is merely one of the compelling reasons for the United States to engage with the BRICS nations. Other group members state that it may be permissible even if the United States is only interested in joining BRICS. If it so desires, the United States could join the BRICS.
India's geostrategic position is less secure than previously believed. Are they on the side that history will favor inexorably? The dependability of India as a partner for the Global South remains to be determined. A compelling argument undermines India's geostrategic legitimacy by criticizing its judgment and stance on global South-related issues. This is because the concept raises questions regarding Indian geostrategic decisions and policies in the Global South. Her current foreign policy should reflect her ambivalent sentiments regarding non-alignment.
India is a crucial component of the U.S. strategy to counter China's emerging dominance and contain its rise. After exerting pressure, the United States and the European Union persuaded India to comply with their demands. Since the end of the Cold War, the United States has sought, created, and exploited hegemony; it has also openly supported subversion and infiltration and actively pursued instances of conflict. The United States has frequently demonstrated its willingness to intervene militarily in other nations' affairs. India may have sensed the assertive hegemony of the United States. Doesn't it?
India has considerable influence over Chinese strategy, which it should utilize more effectively against China rather than supporting the West. India could strategically exploit its influence over Chinese policy by using it to its benefit.
In recent years, the Western nations, headed by the United States, have posed unprecedented challenges to China's peaceful development and Russia's peaceful coexistence. Despite numerous international disagreements and instabilities, the international community has sought, via the BRICS, China's and Russia's assistance in formulating a pragmatic path to peace.
China exemplifies a reputable and esteemed nation, gaining respect and credibility from the international community for its unwavering commitment to promoting peace. China facilitated the diplomatic resolution between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Beijing's ability to effectively reduce the convergence of the two parties is a notable diplomatic achievement, demonstrating China's growing global influence.
China has demonstrated its extraordinary role as a significant participant in the international community's peacekeeping efforts. In addition, its diplomatic efforts have played a crucial role in facilitating the identification of peaceful solutions to various crises. The international community has widely recognized China's dedication to global peace and its diplomatic strategy of promoting cooperation and collaboration. Despite its numerous obstacles, China represents an optimistic outlook for a peaceful future.
China is the most critical trading partner for more than 120 countries. The Chinese government places a premium on ensuring that the country's populace experiences peace, harmony, prosperity, consistency, and shared wealth. China's revival and nonviolent rise in the economic, social, technological, and political spheres will positively impact the international community. In the future, humans can make greater use of Earth as a habitat.

As a fellow Singaporean of Indian origin, over the years i have been very impressed by the way Kishore has come across to western think tank , as most complain of his rather blunt and direct approach without mincing words however believe he can afford to be rather blatant with his comments because he knows he speaks the truth. Also, this direct approach of calling spade a spade, reflects the attitude of a new China and India, as both nations come out of the shadow of a hundred years of humiliation and one hundred and fifty years colonisation respectively, working towards rebuilding their own country, as matter of priority. As both countries grow from strength to strength , we get to see the suspicious behaviour of past western powers, as they feel endangered of their own existence, however failing to realize the fact that unlike Europe & the US, both China and India have never ever occupied or colonised another country. In fact both have been great civilisations, stretching across more than 2500 years of relative peace and prosperity having led to the birth of two great nations, rich in their own culture and heritage that evolved across a golden period of our history as the seat of great learning and the birthplace of great religions, mystics and saints. The world seems to have conveniently forgotten about this golden age of China & India and Kishore is merely highlighting " resurrection of this golden era ".

Kishore is pointing out the obvious. Coexistence and peace is the only way to go, not confrontation or containment. Trade and investment in a peaceful world is good for all, including US. The emerging nations want that, not disruption, currency threats, sanctions or regime changes.
Kishore may be blunt to get attention but not anti-US. He believes that US's answer is to take the lead to build an orderly multipolar world, as builder, not disruptor.
He believes that India's choice is not China vs US, but both. India is aware of US's divide and conquer playbook. At this point of time, India feels it has more to gain by being on US's side. But as its economy grows, it cannot ignore a huge market across its border.
And India knows very well that the West will only tolerate the economic rise of any non-Western power up to a certain point. Remember Japan in the 1990's. And Japan was never a military threat to US.

India is actually in a position where she can benefit in the short term if she plays her cards right. There was a question on Singapore neutrality. Singapore news media certainly can improve in this respect
CNA and Straits Times are state funded media professing to neutrality and objectivity.
Yet they are repeating news from Reuters, AP, AFP and other Western media. The China/Russia/West relations are reported with statements, views and interviews predominantly from the West. Views from Asia and South East Asia are seldom sought and reported.
Not enough effort has been made for a balanced view. This could be because of the ease in getting Western centric news and that its media staff are trained in the West.

With regard to the predominance of Western biased media, I would suggest that China recognises that international media are mainly in English or translated from English. My suggestions include:
      1. Speeches by Chinese officials should carry official English translated version so that they can be more readily reported.
      2. Do have more English competent speakers and even English native speakers on Chinese media staff.
      3. Get more corporations and individuals to contribute to independent media which are struggling to survive creating objective contents. US spends $500m supporting media around the world.

    • @Time4Peace

      @@zacharycohen9985 Two aspects of it:
      1. By all means lean on the side of the West but you don't have to so openly announce to the world that we are clearly on the side of US or the West (e.g. Ng EH proudly in US advertising military liaison, or with Australians, or joining in military exercises) while saying Singapore is neutral; allowing British think tanks to use the Shangri-la Dialogue to set a clearly biased agenda to bash China. If it's to antagonise China, then drop it or have a better format of real closed door dialogue and not for grandstanding. China has shown strong resentment in many ways on the purpose of SLD whether it's for peacemaking or China bashing
It's also time to create an Asean capability to mount dialogues however modest to really project neutrality and peacemaking good for our region. We keep saying one thing but do another.
      2. Our state media is just regurgitating Reuters, AP, AFP.
which give a very slanted pro-West version. These pieces are written by Western journalists who portray very different narrative and perspective. Incredibly, I hear CNA interviewing commentators from Rand Corp and similar Western institutions on their take on Ukraine, China and Taiwan with no or significant counterbalancing views given.
Why is this important? We are not achieving our mission of neutrality if we allow our media to be an extension of Western media. We should increase inputs from experts from Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Indonesia on East-West geopolitics. It's harder to create our own content or modify those available but we should not take the easy way out. I also suspect the our media are also mainly staffed by Western trained local or even journalists from the West.
We are more credible to work with like-minded Asean members to genuinely take on a neutral stance for peacemaking than to be hypocritically playing both sides on a regional level, Of course, we still can foster discreet bilateral relations to safeguard our very own survival.

Why did you not include Russia? Russia has a large portion of the Asian continent, and it is the China-Russia cooperation that is also driving the peace efforts, in spite of the Western provocation for war in Ukraine.

Are you kidding?? Russians do not regard themselves as "Asian" and despite a small nationalist contingent promoting a unique "Eurasian" identity such as Dugin (who wants China divided into separate nations), most still consider themselves Europeans.
Also, most Russian business has been with Europe, not Asia.

Controversial book . And this is the kind of book that the Chinese wants to publish. The stable international orders is inclusive not one that preaches Asian or western century. Only the Chinese or perhaps the Indians will praise Kishore. No other serious public intellectual or policy maker would ever ascribe to his views. Basically they are one sided and do not capture the reality !
