My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much.

    FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? On and off for over two years.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGear...
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
Do you speak French? - Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
Do you make money off RUclips? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $1/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jays...
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. This is the US one: amzn.to/2ykS9Ux

I'm not technically-minded but I think this is your best-made video yet. Very well put-together. Whatever happens to your archive, never delete this one: in years to come it will be a unique snapshot of the day Paris came back to life and souvenir of this very strange time in our lives. Couple of observations: over a year since the fire and this view of Notre Dame is becoming the 'normal' way it looks. And it's not taking long for the traffic to build up again. Finally - WHERE'S YOUR MASK? Looking forward to your epic walk on Friday night.

Definitely weird that Notre Dame without a roof is becoming the norm - it's hard to remember what it used to look like. And I'll definitely keep it =)

Pat Hallam totally agree with what you wrote. This felt like something I’d see on PBS before/after a Rick Steves show. Translation = great with V/O work, editing, production value. Having said that, I also love watching the more traditional style of a more intimate 1:1 style too. Both great; different reasons. Love watching these - merci ❤️

This format is awesome. Loved the church bells in the beginning, quiet filming of trams, people going about their day, little old ladies walking their white poodles. And the shot at the end was absolutely fantastic. Your voiceover work was 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼. Well done Jay!

I loved this video. I loved the narration at the beginning with no music, very appropriate for post quarantine life . I loved how it was a slower pace. I honestly love all your videos but this one made me comment how much I loved it!
I live vicariously through you and you have a very nice way of documenting feelings and being real . Thanks for the “realness” (? Is that a word?) in a world full of fake. This is by far one of the best videos I have watched in a long long time! I personally didn't step out into the streets of Paris until the second day, both because I was worried everyone would be out like some first day of spring break type of thing, but also of course because the weather was trash. On Tuesday I more or less took a similar route as you while on a Velib bike. After being isolated for 2 months with nearly zero interactions since confinement restrictions were set in place, I couldn't help but smile and just remember why it is that I chose to move to this city and in a way refall in love with it again.
    More stuff like this! :D

Great vlog Jay. That seemed like an emotional one for you. I hope and pray that people dont go crazy with their freedom. We havent had as strict ,restrictions here in Melbourne, but so many paid no attention and acted as normal. Its frustrating! I still had to work, as pharmacies are essential. 2 of us got sick, we were tested, thankgod for the word Negative! To top it off we have seen the worse in people, we have been yelled at, abused. Ive hated working through this pandemic. I think im going to need therapy. Lol.I myself, am very afraid of the government giving more freedom. I can just see the craziness. I know how much you want to be free, see your friends, but be safe Jay, dont go to crazy. Enjoy Paris again Jay . Thankyou🙏🏼🙏🏼 Love Paris ❤️

The emptiness is eerie for sure. I’m glad things are opening back up, people who are healthy like yourself need to get back to normal life. The amount of fear and anxiety is a disease itself, being outdoors in beautiful Paris and around people is such an immune booster ! Merci beaucoup Jay. I cried through the whole video. It looked as if you were having your moments as well, particularly at Montmarte. The first several minutes with you in narration mode talking about the 16th was incredible. There was a different tonality; a level of intimacy that was sobering and heartfelt. Definitely, something to add to your production on occasion. I agree with others. No one captures Paris as you do. This is one of your best. This was the reminder I needed of how beautiful France is, why I must return, and why I spend so much of my time acquiring le français tous les jours. Merci. Merci. Merci. Mark

As blindingly white Sacré-Cœur can look against a blue sky on a sunny day, it can look so desolate and grey against a white sky on a miserable rainy day.
This was a beautiful video. I can see how you cherish Paris and how you have missed being able to be out. I miss her so much and I'm going to be living vicariously through your videos as you take us around Paris in these next few weeks (maybe months) that we can't visit. That was especially enjoyable. Over the past few weeks, especially after watching one of your videos, I've often thought of how much more difficult it would be to endure the confinement if a city as beautiful as Paris was all around you, yet out of reach. I expect a number of your viewers experienced a vicarious sense of relative freedom.
We had arranged to visit again in September, but, we had to cancel and move it off a year. Let's hope things are better by then. By the way, We stayed in the 16th last trip. It's beautiful and convenient, but, unless you're very well heeled, you might feel a little out of place. The rap piece "Auteil, Neuilly, Passy" by "Les Inconnus" kind of sums it up, but, I have no complaints.

Thank you so much for showing me around my neighbourhood, even if it was only virtually. Gladly take all I can get, and your videos make it that much more personal 🙂 It was cool to follow your emotions, I'm gonna be an emotional wreck though haha
The sense of belonging and appreciation towards Paris as my home base is just on an immeasurable level right now, man.. Awesome video.

Hey Jay. I've been watching your videos for a long time but this one was really special. I only wish I was living in a place that I loved as much as you love Paris. I have visited Paris 5 or 6 times over the years and have always felt drawn to it and this video really captures the beauty and attraction of this special place.

I was going to say the same as Pat, this video is so professional now...even from the first couple of seconds in, I felt you did something different/upgraded your equipment.
By watching the video - It sort of sounds like you're a journalist and have bypassed run-of-the-mill vloggers by creating videos that make you want to embrace your life in Paris. Keep up the great work!

For my first holiday in Paris I rented out a tiny apartment in Passy within the 16th.. it was only a week but yes I can fully understand your "feeling out of place". On the plus side it is adorned with some exquisite architecture and transportation to and from is quite easy.

So nice to see you out and about again to shed some hope or semblance of normalcy. Can´t help saying that I´m extermely jealous of your freedom but glad that at least I can live vicariously through your videos! Life here in Spain is still very much restricted and will continue to be for sometime. Totally get what you mean by missing (or maybe forgetting) the city you live in as the few times I´ve gone out, I´ve gotten lost! Cheers on the amazing video and the sunset through the Arch de Triopmf was the cherry on top!

The vlog is evolving! Nice to see all the positive feedback for you here already. The super high resolution makes it feel like you're really right there with you; which is nice, since I was supposed to be in Paris during the confinement but obviously had to cancel. This vlog was interesting. It had a very different feel at the beginning; it didn't feel like you, to be honest. But you came back by the end. The change of vibe, along with the higher resolution really had a big impact on the whole feel of the vlog. It felt more formal? Maybe that was partly a product of the focus on the 16th? Anyway, I rarely comment, but apparently I'm not alone in finding this particular vlog special, and perhaps evidence of your maturing sensibility both as a Parisian and a vlogger. Keep keeping us on our toes, Jay. We're all rooting for ya! :)

A great vlog! I really like the area you live in, the architecture of the buildings , all the greenery, lovely. My favourite bit of this vlog was the tunnel lol. the lights when you go in and the pretty ride by the river when you get out. I thought everyone had to wear a mask in France? You are not Jay. Wow! That sunset! ❤️

It's so funny how much fun that tunnel is. And no, masks are only required on public transport - and I do have them for indoor spaces like grocery stores etc., but not for early morning bike rides ;)
