    Video 3 of 12 for Audio Mistakes 109: 10 Common Vocal Recording Mistakes
    When recording vocals (or any kind of live instrument) so many things can go wrong! Unfortunately, if audio is recorded poorly, its often really hard to fix it later. Thats why we brought in our "mistakes expert", Joe Albano, to create this 10 Vocal Recording Mistakes course. With a few simple but important guidelines, you will learn to keep your mistakes at a minimum!
    Joe explains why certain mics are better at recording vocals than others and how proper set-up techniques can make all the difference. He also explains how lack of attention to proximity can absolutely make or break a track. This is followed by a bunch of other important tips including the psychology behind how to inspire the best performance from vocalists.
    Mistakes are all a part of the learning process, especially if you understand and correct them. Thats what this Vocal Recording Mistakes course is all about. You get the luxury of learning from OUR mistakes so that YOU dont have to make them yourself!

    It's nice to have a bigger budget & high end options when recording, but having only less expensive mics does not mean amateur results. Did you know that all they had to record the entire Woodstock concert with in 1969 was Shure dynamic SM58s? With those mics, Eddie Kramer & the audio team mixed the concert & a world famous album of songs with massive radio airplay & a movie of the performances were made. They probably would have liked to have had a few other mics as well, but they definitely got the job done with only SM58s on the instruments & vocals. SM58s look slightly different today from what we see in the videos, but they are STILL under $100 each FIFTY YEARS LATER!

      Is not the mic, signal chain is formed by many factors. You can have a Neumann but plug it into a Behringer mixer or interface

      Well, because a SM58 has more of that melodic sound than any TLM by Neumann. Even more a SM57

    Different songs can require different vocal mics. Lo fi out of a Harp mic can sound really cool. You can cup the mic to color the tone more ect and you can hold it and even scream into it.

    I been recording my vocals with a sennheiser Mk4 a 3 hundred usd, but yesterday I got myself a bluebird I got it new for 2 hundred usually that are also 3 hundred they both are decent sounding mics. for my voice the blue i like it more with the mk4 my voice sounds nasally but not in other singers I had recorded with it, so it’s different with every vocals I also like the sound of the AKG C214 for my voice I tried in the guitar center store but it’s 4 hundred usd I’m pretty sure it’s going to be my next 😎

    Seriously who says "recordists"? I've spent my life in all the major LA studios and never have I heard anyone say "oh yeh that Bob, he's a really great recordist"

    • @donnythompson8029
      @donnythompson8029 6 лет назад

      Not sure?? This is a new one to me as well. Maybe referring to someone as a "recordist" is the new thing for describing those who are at the home-hobby level of recording, as opposed to referring to someone as an "engineer" just because they can open a DAW prog, arm a track and hit the "R" button on a keyboard... (FWIW, I think the term "producer" has also been tossed around too loosely in the past few years). There are a lot of home-hobbyists these days that don't really know much about ACTUAL audio engineering, other than being able to get a signal to a track on a DAW. Because you yourself have experience working mostly in pro-level studios, with actual audio engineers at the helm, I can see where the term "recordist" wouldn't be used ... because at that level, the people you are working with ARE real audio engineers. I dunno...? just thinking out loud, I guess.

    The Sennheiser MK4 sounds just as good as the Neumanns for RUclips and it cost around $300.00. The MK4 is made in the same factory Neumann. There are YT video comparisons to back up what I say.

      @anonymusum 7 лет назад +1

      That may be ok for RUclips but surely not for real recording sessions.

    Mentioning mic choices without also discussing mic preamps seems a bit odd ( to me). Many of these high-priced mics would probably disappoint the user, if they were being used with a budget-level preamp with cheap converters. It's all about the vocal chain, and that chain will only ever sound as good as its weakest link. Given the choice, I'd rather use a 58 through a pro-level preamp, and great converters, than to use a high-priced condenser through a cheap, thin sounding, noisy pre. Also, there wasn't enough attention paid to dynamic mics, ( SM7, RE20, 58, etc) which - depending on the space you are recording in - can actually be BETTER choices than a condenser for tracking vocals.

    • @LaDivaWorld
      @LaDivaWorld 6 лет назад

      I fully agree with you on preamps! And yes on a room - most people don't even realize how greatly a room can impact the sound! However, as for the dynamics, I in general tend to avoid them - I find them to sound very harsh and not honest on most people,but that is my opinion. I prefer ribbons and a noble classy timeless sound.;-)

    • @donnythompson8029
      @donnythompson8029 6 лет назад

      I love ribbons... they have a classic sound, and are also great for things like mic'ing of guitar amps, and as room mics for drums. For vocals, they are great for that "vintage" sound... and I do use them for vocals if I'm working on something bluesy, or retro... but, I don't think they are necessarily the best choice for more modern sounding rock or pop productions,(because of their inherent top end roll off ) because listeners have grown accustomed to the "hyping" of the top end on vocals for modern rock and pop; for those kinds of tracks, I'll usually choose a GOOD condenser - but there are also those times where a good dynamic is the best choice for a particular singer. At that point, having a great preamp is essential. Budget model preamps, while they can "get the job done", don't sound the same as pro level preamps. They also tend to be low in gain - generally they sit around 55-60 db, which is fine for condensers, but not really optimal for moving coil and ribbon mics - and they get pretty noisy when you turn them up enough to provide optimal gain for lower output mics. Another feature I like is having settings for impedance values. These various settings can be fairly subtle on most condensers, but noticeable on Dynamics, and even more so on Ribbons.My point is.. The preamps we use matters - a lot. The very first time I heard an SM58 through a pro level pre ( I think it was a Neve in a 500 series rack, years ago), my jaw dropped. It was if I'd never actually heard the potential of that mic before, a mic I'd used countless times in the past for live and recording work. ;)

      Honestly that can really depend. It's whether the seller can be trusted or not, and if you can tell they aren't scamming you. That's the risk of buying them used, but it's up to you if you're willing to take that risk.

    What is a great microphone for a high pitch singer?

    • @LaDivaWorld
      @LaDivaWorld 6 лет назад +4

      Your definition is incorrect by all means. Any singer CAN produce a high pitch. What you meant to say is called a voice type and that is classified normally by the standards of classical music. A voice type refer to the coloration of timbre a voice possesses without any straining, being natural and full. In older times, lets say barocco era, there weren't many voice types because voices had a better technique allowing them to easily reach very high notes while having either a lighter or darker coloration. Nowdays, a voice type characterizes not only a timber, but also the tessitura or range. What you refer to can be either a soprano or a mezzo soprano in classical terms. Those terms are hardly applicable to pop/jazz/rock singers since their vocal techniques can be anything if any at all, which usually do not produce a homogenic voice to start with, so just because someone can sing falsetto does not describe him a true tenor. You need to determine a true color of that particular voice and go from there. Even if your singer CAN reach top notes, the color of the voice will determine which mic would suit better. The choice of a mic need to reflect the true qualities of the voice and either be transparent ( what you hear is what you get) OR complimentary ( providing some enhancement without completely overriding it to the point of non-recognition even if you say WOW) . If you choose a mic with enhanced (enforced highs) top end, then if your singer is a high soprano, which already has a very pronounced top end, then you are going to add on top of that and that is not a good thing at all because it would make the voice unbalanced by doubling on high frequencies. It may make the voice unpleasant to ear as well.
      If your vocalist lacks luster and crystal/bell qualities in the top part of his/her range, then you do want to choose a mic with enhanced highs. Again, the bell or ringing or metal qualities have to be very pronounced in your singer to steer you clear from Neuman for instance. Neumanns are designed with pop singers in mind and those barely sing above C5. A pop technique cannot produce a homogenic voice of 2 octaves, thus Neumann will be a very popular mic of choice. If your vocalist is a male, and a tenor, or countertenor,he may benefit from Neuman, but not just about any Neuman. Any mic with the enforced highs will lack in the bass, which is not a good thing. A homogenic voice should have a flat response, too, although most people never think of a voice in the same terms as they would think about mics.. A full bodied voice will have low freq in it to some degree regardless of a voice type. For a homogenic voice you would be better off with a flat response mic. For a voice lacking in lows, use AKG or some ribbon mics OR compensate in your EQ. If the high pitch of that particular voice sounds squeaky or harsh, use tube mic to subdue the vulgarities. I generally never recommend using dynamics because they are never honest. You can work with honesty in post production. I would say capture the signal as is and then work with it in post production if chasing after expensive mics is too much trouble. Your choice of a preamp is going to affect your signal dramatically as well, so you need to equally worry about the preamp as well. For a poor voice choose tube or transformer based mic which provide coloration to some degree of your choice. Avoid ribbons then, they are very honest and often honesty is very unforgiving as it is a reality check. For you, as a producer, any quality CAN become a point of creativity. It depends on the choices you make and executions. Also, test every mic YOURSELF...Do not trust anyone's opinion. Most people have very subjective perceptions and won't be objective when it comes to critical listening and their descriptions of mics. However, there is one guideline to keep in mind: when it comes to music, musicality needs to prevail. Music is a truly noble art and vulgarities do not stand a chance in a long run and will not pass the test of time. Good luck.
