You clean a trumpet the same as the horn except you remove the valves. Most trumpet valves are numbered so they don't get mixed up. If your trumpet doesn't, color code your valves with different colored twist ties or something like that.
@@chewie2055 I used a school owned instrument that, to my knowledge, had not been cleaned. I was surprised at how little stuff came out. I guess the students didn’t practice. Heh.
@ender zek Great question. All straps and hand guards that I know of, are removable. Either they are attached with Velcro or shoe lace. That should be removed before cleaning.
Imagine if everybody everywhere decided to play flute instead of what they play now, there would be volume to the music, even with bass and contrabass.
Horn playing friends, we play a beast of an instrument. Nobody said it would be easy! Don't compare yourself to other players, just keep practicing and pushing yourself. Sometimes I wanted to quit when I was the only horn in my band in high school. I felt ashamed for making mistakes and thought everybody could hear me and was judging me for making mistakes. Now I am a music major in college, and I am required to take lessons for horn. It can be difficult sometimes but it is so worth it! The horn is a beautiful instrument! Keep pushing! Listen to horn players on RUclips. Name your instrument, create a bond with it! Don't leave it in its case, practice it!! Communicate and become a team with your section members if you have one. Have pride in what you do and see how your perspective changes! Best of luck!!❤️📯
The Valve Trombone can do it too, it has the same range as a Trumpet but down an Octave. I think if they always numbered the Valves, things would get easier.
That doesn’t sound like an ideal situation. Could the lacquer be coming off? Never use hot water when bathing a brass instrument. Luke warm water with a liquid dish soap like Dawn to cut the slide grease is all you need. Also a snake brush.
Hi dude. Great video really, I just wanna know because I'm a french guy and I didnt hear if its only soap on ur bath tube or something special for the Horn I hope I'll get an answer soon Keep goin' and play Fhorn again and again :D
Great video, thanks! I just found an old French Horn on the side of the road (Yamaha YHR321), it's a little dented, dirty and missing the mouth piece. But I've always wanted a French Horn (such a beautiufl instrument!), so I'm going to try to clean it up. This video will help a lot. :D
Wow. The universe works in mysterious ways. Finding a French Horn on the side of the road is a million to one chance, but being found by a person who always wanted a horn? You must live right.
Can I do this even if my horn is unlacquered? I’m pretty sure my horn is a few decades old and it’s desperate to be clean, but I won’t unless I’m absolutely sure I won’t ruin it.
That depends. If you play after eating, and don’t brush your teeth (sometimes rehearsal is after lunch or dinner and brushing isn’t an option), then you should put a snake down the lead pipe (the pipe that the mouthpiece goes into) every one or two weeks. If you do that, then once a year should be fine. This only my opinion. Others may feel differently.
You can buy them for $5-$10. I prefer the metal flex spring kind. I use a cheap vinyl brush in my video but I’ve had issues with the brush coming off in the Horn.
QuickFixTips I play the saxophone. I am very lucky because I rinsed off the instrument afterward with warm water. I thought it was broken at first because it wasn’t playing in tune and some keys were stuck. But after a while of drying it off it managed to work fine again. I got really lucky, I thought it was a goner. But thanks for the quick response.
Evelyn McCabe Whatever you do, don’t submerge the sax in water. The pads will be ruined. Just run a swab through it and wipe off the outside with a soft cloth. Sticky pads can be cleaned individually. Try putting a piece of paper between the pad and the collar it closes on. Push the key onto the paper and then pull the paper out. Repeat a few times. If it still sticks, take it to a repair shop.
Shelby Lavy The great thing about brass is that it doesn’t rust. It can corrode. It can lay in a clean stream or lake and corrode after a few years. Now there’s an issue called red rot but that’s from the inside out and that’s from the acids in saliva. Actually, bathing a brass instrument once or twice a year with clean water will help prevent that too.

Clean an actual dirty instrument….

@@quickfixtips2030I had to clean a school French horn because it sounded clogged (red rot) and it was meh dirty.
Lesson to Tuba players: Make sure to quite a bit of time cleaning that sucker if it is a four+ valve compensating system
I know I'm a little lait but what do you do if you have a build on lether strap on your horn where you put your left hand?

QuickFixTips ok thank you
I should have chose to play a flute instead of a french horn
Imagine if everybody everywhere decided to play flute instead of what they play now, there would be volume to the music, even with bass and contrabass.
Theres only 2 people plus me in my french horn class and we have a band concert in February so I'm kinda struggling here
Me and another girl is the only French horn players

My French horn started like shedding plastics after I bathed it. Is that bad 😬

Cameron Barnes Yes you can clean an unlaquered horn the same way.
im wondering how do you clean a trumpet and u rule mr.otto
How long does it take for it to dry?
It’s up to you. You can towel dry the outside right away then grease and oil the valves and slides right away if you’re in a hurry.
how often do i clean my horn

Be careful to put the instrument back together properly. My tuba became a giant french horn.
Oof, I wish I could see that lol
Trumpets and Trombones have it easy
Can you bathe a tuba the same way?
You sure can. This video is applicable to all brass instruments.
What kind of horn is this?
Emily Howell It is a student model Yamaha YHR 567.
Also is a double horn.
can you dunk valves in water?
You can. Just re oil soon after.
Thank you!
Mine has not been cleaned in 40 years 🤭
My trumpet has 4 slids
1 tuning slide and then 3 valve slides
I put bleach on my instrument. I am an idiot. Do you know how I could fix it?
Hmmm. What instrument are you cleaning? How much bleach did you use? A cap full in a full bathtub of lukewarm water shouldn’t hurt it
It is not recommended however. How long was the bleach on it? Did the laquer come off? Can you post a photo?

You can't put a brass instrument in water because long term it will rust
