M3 Carbon Fiber Roof Restoration!

  • We restored a carbon fiber roof of a 2015 BMW M3! Originally when it came into the shop we hoped it would only take one try for the clear coat to set right and it would be an easier job. However when we finished the first coast the coat absorbed the texture of the weave and we had to sand it out and try again to finish out with a beautiful restoration. We detailed the car and sent it out for the customer to drive away!

    Throughout the video you’ll notice the shop that we record in. It's actually a collision repair center that I own! It’s a family business and we strive to be the best in the world with attention to detail that seem obsessive. That’s how we continue to have business. We love seeing crazy builds, turning dreams into reality and working on more big projects like this that our customers would be proud to show off. In our RUclips we also want to show you the lifestyle of the shop as a team and as an owner and what that looks like balancing both and our dreams to grow into a nationally recognized name.

    Thanks for posting this! There's not much out there on how to restore these roofs. I've got a bunch of light scratches and a few deep scratches in mine that I'm making a plan of attack for, but your video helped me see what I could be dealing with if I sand below the clear coat. I'm hoping I can sand the deep scratches into narrow channels and fill with epoxy resin, then light sand and re-clear the whole roof without cutting through the clear layer.

    I did mine 4 coats of clear but when it gets dry looks like the roof absorbs the clear coat.I tried to buff and polish it but I can not get the proper shine. Will it fix the problem if I re sand it and lay another clear coat? Did you use 8000 grit sand paper before clear coating?

      Sand it with 800 grit, finish it wet with either a grey scuff pad and soapy water or some 1000 wet sanding paper. Put 2-4 more coats of clear and you should be happy with that outcome. Make sure you sand out as much of the texture as possible before you re-clear

    Hi there,
    I would like to know when you were applying the clear coat, did you do all 6th coat at one go or did you wait for it to dry then do each coat in different session? else great work..

      Thanks for watching. I did 3 coats, let it dry, sanded it and did another 3. If you do 6 straight you’ll have issues.

      @@ImJayLyons Thanks a lot for this and also may I know the brand or what type of clear coat did you use, and also what number grit did you use in that process. Thanks again.

    how much did you end up charging for this ?

    • @ImJayLyons
      @ImJayLyons  22 дня назад +1

      I believe it ended up being around $10,000. That includes a new front windshield all the moldings around the front and rear glass, a new cowl panel and a fairly intense detail after the job since it was so much messy work.
