  • A little internet sleuthing reveals that "Horace the Horse" appeared on albums by both Burl Ives and Eddy Arnold, but I had never heard of it until Josh sang it to me. Now that I know the song, I intend to make it a permanent addition to my horse themed classes, because I know the kiddos are going to love it.
But enough about me! I thought it would be a nice change to turn over most of this space to my guests and give them a chance to contribute not only their biographical information, but also some words about a song they wanted to share, so the text below is from Josh Black, and his bio follows.
    From Josh:
“Horace the Horse” is a song my mom sang to me from the time I was very young. It has stayed spinning in my head my whole life like the merry-go-round it describes, but I never heard it from any other source but my mother. When Kate asked me if I would like to sing with her on “Songs from the Sandbox,” this was the first song that popped into my head! As the years have passed on, this song has taken on greater meaning for me. Your concept of success in life is only a matter of perspective. I think that is a wonderful message from this old kids’ song that I hope future generations will also take to heart.
Josh Black is a baritone originally from Salt Lake City who has lived in San Francisco since 2007. He has sung professionally with Oakland Symphony Chorus, West Edge Opera, Volti, Chalice Consort, Lyric Opera Kansas City, Tulsa Opera, Light Opera Oklahoma, and Cimarron Circuit Opera Company. He is a co-owner and Director of Finance for Piccola Carolers (www.facebook.c..., a Victorian costumed Christmas caroling company that employs over 25 singers to perform in quartets at parties, shopping centers, and tree lightings around the Bay Area each holiday season. He has also been a professional church musician for the past 20 years, and is currently the bass section leader at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Burlingame.
    Lyrics:
Horace the horse on the merry-go-round
Went up and down, round and round
He's been sad since the day he found
He's the very last horse on the merry-go-round
The music began and away they go
High and low, to and fro
Poor old Horace would always say
"I'm the very last horse again today."
How he tried and tried and tried
But he just never could win.
Horace cried and cried and cried
cause all the other horses were ahead of him
Then came the day on the merry-go-round
    When Horace turned, looked around
Then said "Gosh oh gee --
I'm the very first horse on the merry-go-round,
    The others are following me!"
