Pierre, have you ever done a follow-up video to this? Would love to see the progress on this car! Is this one you guys sent out to Europe or did you do the rust repairs locally/in-house?
Eastern block countries are a great place for that skill as a lot of the planes, migs etc were built there. After the break up of the Soviet Union. Kirkham cobras moved their replica body production to an old mig factory in Poland I think.
just like me... only that I'm from romania. i work alone andd restor cars. At the moment I work on a w115, but not the car it matters after all. Labor is labor apx 25$/h for resto projects. body part repair or wlddings are juts 11$/h
Pierre, our w115, stayed in my family for 30 years before we sold it, and after 20 years thinking the car is chopped and scrapped for spare parts, I've found it again on sale. It's one piece but seems to be visibly rusty around the trims, trunk lid etc. Most people wouldn't even think of restoring a car in that condition, but since this is the exact car I grew up with, I cannot think rationally. My question to you, is, how many work hours would be needed to restore the frame rust, just to make the car road worthy and safe? Let's consider the absolute worst case of corossion? I'm talking in terms of labour hours, not $$$ because I live in south europe and I'd like to calculate the resoration cost in local rates. I would very much appreciate your answer, it would help me understand if a restoration is completely out of question, or maybe I can do it some time later
Hi from Australia, I have a w108 280s/8 that’s got excellent running gear, low mileage(has the extremely rare in Australia 4 speed column shift manual) but the outer sills and rear 1/4 panels are ordinary inside and out. The front lower 1/4 panels are poor as well, however The 4 doors are excellent as is the floor and windscreen channels. Q, is getting any appropriate weld in parts from Germany the best way to go? (I can do the metal work and have the equipment) , or are they available via the USA? Our exchange rate is terrible....... Q 2, the piece that goes around the rear shock from the sill, beside the fuel tank to the rear bumper has rust coming through, it’s
I would source EU repair parts, as i think they are more precisely made. As far as the rear shock support goes, i know these parts are available. If you need help finding them, email me at mbownersforlife@bellsouth.net. I would love to help you find the restoration panels.
hi i have a w108 with the m110 fuel injection engine and the car has been sitting since '97 and was trying to get it running but i think that fuel does not reach the fuel injectors i removed the the fuel lines from the fuel distributor and the one that was coming from the gas tank had pressure but the other one(probably the return was dry)the engine started when i sprayed starting spray, what do you think?
Hi, Just bought a `72 280SE 4.5 myself which does has rust and is in need for some engine work because oil burning and blue smoke. Having the car shipped from Missouri to Rotterdam (living near Amsterdam myself) and hear you mention Riga workshop. Was thinking off get the rustrepair/ painting and engine work done in Poland but I have no experience and a trustable name for a shop yet. Can someone give me some advice what to so next? Hope to hear, thanks

Mario, you need to have an end goal- replacing the metal and welding in new panels. You will either need a welder or a good body shop, but the rust has to be cut out, welded in, and then the panel has to be repaired.
