- In today’s video I’m going to share some of the issues I had with Self Watering Pots and how I fix these issues and prevent them from happening. I will show you both an organic and inorganic self watering set up and talk through what causes some of the success and failures of this grow system in the winter.

You're right, the self watering is a disaster for mold! If only I'd known! 😭
I have recently started watching and am going through your old video. Presently hip to here. This such a good reminder. It be nice to revisit this for ant new perso as myself. Just dumped the water out of my reservoir after a nightmare of sogg wet roots equals rooting roots. Than you.
Thanks so much for watching! Yeah, careful with too much water in the reservoir or you can have mold issues, I use it more in the summer when I can't keep up with watering, but not as much in the winter. Appreciate you watching my videos!
Hmm Montreal climates resemble NYC climates. This gives me hope for S/H this winter! Learning lots from your channel :)
:) I think you'll have success! Thanks for watching!
Excellent video
Thanks for watching!
Hard to believe that Miltoniopsis doesn't have good roots because it is quite green and the bulbs look plump. I mean, it looks like a big healthy plant. 👍
I don't like using self watering with the orchids. I experimented with it but I found I prefer the control I have with moisture and feed by hand watering. I could make my like way easier with self watering but I've got plenty of time. On the flip side, my African Violets I do keep in self watering setups because I find they grow much more vigorously with consistent moisture than going from wet to nearly dry and back to wet in a normal pot.
Thanks for watching Michael! It was stressed this summer and dropped some leaves and lost 2 bulbs. Its growing some good roots now, but it seemed set back after some really hot temps (had a 10 day heat wave here). It's probably doing better than I think. This is my first miltoniopsis and I can't hold it to the standard of say a sharry baby. I try to give it the best conditions I can and keep it in a room where is 60-70 degrees (for fall / winter) and it's liking it.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks Nicole!! Great video, love to see a fellow NE orchid grower doing their thing!! 💖💖
Thanks so much for watching Rey ☺️❤️
Nice looking pots, I like how they are different sizes but same design, very stylish :) Happy New Year Nicole!
Thanks for watching and commenting! I like them all to match somehow 🤠 Have a happy new year!!
Hi Nicole. Very interesting vídeo. As far as I remember this is the first time I see organic médium being used in self watering pots. Any particular reason why you don't use inorganic médium in all self watering pots? Thanks and a Happy New Year 💖💝
Ah yes, I use the organic media mostly on the hot growing phals, as I want to make sure the root temps stay warmer in winter. I want to transition the miltoniopsis to inorganic though since it can handle the cooler temps so I will be doing that next time I report. I use it mostly for summer time as the pots dry really fast and I can leave some water in the reservoir and it'll absorb and I don't have issues. It's in winter where I have issues. It's definitely more dangerous in winter than I was expecting.
Happy new year and thanks for watching!
Opps rotting roots at the end.
where did you bought your white pots and their sizes ty
Thanks for watching. I got them on Amazon. The round ones are the T4U brand. I use the small, medium and large sizes. I believe the square is also T4U brand. Happy growing!
Will you consider using inorganic media for the orchids in organic media? Interesting that you would have the same set up for organic and inorganic media. Have a,wonderful day 🌸
Hi Nina! Yes! I definitely want to move the miltoniopsis to inorganic. I did this mostly to keep the roots more moist in summer. I have my hot growing phals in organic media as well to keep the roots warmer in winter. I sometimes move them to a room that's a little cooler than my grow shelves to put them on display and the leca is a little too cool for my liking. I'll say that the self watering works well in summer because my grow space can get super hot and it dries very very fast. I don't have issue leaving a small reservoir in summer, but it's not good at all in winter. I do want to move more to inorganic - organic I'm finding is prone to these issues, and can be inconvenient with the extra repotting.
