What's the point of this? He wasn't singing live. He was Just making the playback LOOK (not sound) more realistic. You can't Sing without Hearing yourself. Michael wasn't Hearing himself Because he wasn't trying to Sing. Everyone, including Michael, was Hearing only the playback track. Probably only at the Very end he did some vocals live and could actually hear himself (Just the Ad libs part).
@@marketlider2811 I thought it was interesting especially in today's world of "live" performances to see and hear the master at work in a very common practice... using helps tracks in a live performance that isn't necessarily setting you up with the expectation of a live vocal.
Need to remember that he had laryngitis in Munich, wasn’t able to hear himself sing/trying to sing due to playback being used & had reduced lung capacity due to lupus.
We are stepping it up Chris!!!! fantastic, I was hoping you'd start analyzing MJ live performances. That said I wished you picked BJ Bucharest 1992, which is 100% live... Munich was not all live and he had laryngitis. But I hope you do more MJ live songs. Thank you!
I love the analyze & Chris Liepes MJ journey. But it also breaks my heart hearing MJ fight through the laryngitis instead of just resting his voice like he was supposed to. This man sacrificed himself for the show and his fans, even when the stage crashed down during an Earth Song show in 1999 and he injured his back badly, he kept performing, a true legend >3
This was fascinating. He really sold his performance. Loved at the end where MJ beatboxes and you can hear the other background vocalist guy countering him. Whoa. Never heard that before. Thx for this. The thought that went into this stage performance is off the charts.
Thank you, Chris, for your unique perspective on Michael's music, as usual, and especially on this particular performance. Regarding MJ's voice during this 1997 Munich concert, there are a few things I'd like to point out: here, Michael is a 39 year-old man who's been performing since the age of 5, who's been emotionally and mentally ill particularly since the "1993 FALSE allegation" case and who's also been dealing with some serious health issues, such as laryngitis, since then. Yet, he manages to deliver a KILLING performance, which remains one of the best I - and several other people - have EVER seen.
Also, Chris, I deeply appreciate the excitement and passion you share with us on stuff like this. It’s great to see someone else nerd out about the intricacies and nuances of things like this as much as we might! 🙌🏿
No way you got his laryngitis multitrack😭. this is dope, i always wanted to hear them clearly. Also are you gonna do more live show vocal analysis of michael? I'd recommend vocals from the bad tour and dangerous tour when he was healthy and still singing live. (if these tracks even exist cause these shows are kinda old.)
Be good to see the multi track from the Yokohama concert in 1988 I think it was on the Bad tour. Brilliant live version of Billie Jean. Chris Liepe, get on it bud 👍🏼😊
Michael was truly sick, the singing and dancing performance is just incredible, lucky to have been present at this concert and many others. thank you Chris it's a whole other dimension the way you present his live performances ❤
There's a video of Michael recording Childhood at the Hit Factory Studio, and I think it would be amazing to see you analyze it in one of your upcoming videos
That would be awesome indeed. I wish we had more footage of MJ recording songs in the studio - that would be the ABSOLUTE MASTERCLASS. Apart from full "Childhood" session, I do know of snippets of "The Girl Is Mine", "We Are The World", "Another Part Of Me", "We Are Here To Change The World" (from "Captain EO", 1986), "Just Good Friends" and "I Just Can't Stop Loving You", but it's not that many songs and, in most cases, it's just a few seconds clip.
This multitrack should never have been released. I love leaks, for me, everything should be listened demos or unreleased songs and other things. But in this specific case, during this tour, Michael was really unwell and had issues with laryngitis. Furthermore, his guitarist Jennifer Batten confirmed in a live stream that during this tour, he had oxygen backstage; he was suffering, and you can clearly hear that from these vocals and the excessive use of playback during this specific tour. I repeat, I’m in favor of leaks, but in this case, we’re witnessing a person in pain, not a singer performing where there are a few mistakes or something funny. For example, I love the vocals of a drunk Freddie Mercury that can be found on RUclips, I love vocals of singers, including Michael’s, when they change notes or something is off. It makes live performances more beautiful because they’re natural. But in this case, again, they shouldn’t have been released because we’re seeing a person suffering. That being said, I always enjoy your videos, congratulations on everything, but I just wanted to share my opinion on this.
Grow a pair. I’m a big fan of MJ and to me it’s interesting and educational to hear this side of MJ. It’s not like he is on his death bed about to die.
@ @ No excuses. I’ve listened to every track of this multitrack and I don’t see a singer making mistakes, I see a person who is suffering. This is a fact, not an excuse. I criticized Michael during the Dangerous Tour for using playback on certain songs where he could have sung live, but there, the criticism is objective because he was in good shape. In the History Tour, not only do I see a man forced and trapped in his own character, doing a tour full of artificial and fake things, but this shows us how much he wanted to do it, even though he was clearly not healthy. You can see it in how Michael looks thinner in some stops of the tour and fuller in others. Do you know what that means? I’m not looking for excuses. Do you think it’s normal to have oxygen backstage? That’s what Batten said, not me. I hate playback, for me the History Tour shouldn’t have existed, but at those levels, contracts matter more than a person’s health. Do you think MJ was healthy during MSG? No, not at all. But in the specific case of the History Tour, he had serious lung problems, and that’s a fact.
@@antonmk1244 I wrote it, I specified it. I criticized Michael during the Dangerous Tour because he was in good shape and could sing. In This Is It, we don’t have the evidence, we couldn’t see what he would have done. You’re not talking to a fanatical person who thinks Michael is a perfect angel and never infallible, be careful, he’s my idol but I know how to be objective so, if you want my opinion, I think if he couldn’t do it, he should have sat down and sung, stepped out of his character, the moonwalk, and other things. That’s what I think. But again, I’m only talking about the History Tour, he wasn’t healthy and that’s a fact for me.
Not sure if its mentioned in the video but MJ couldnt hear himself either so he had no idea how he was sounding. Nor did he care because this was never going to be heard by anyone until it leaked. its fascinating to hear. He definitely struggled as he aged with the decades of wear and tear on his voice. People keep mentioning his laryngitis as an excuse for the entirety of the history but thats just not true. It was for a few weeks but ultimately he didnt focus on getting into peak physical shape to keep up vocally with the dance. Thats why hes so winded compared to the bad tour. Dangerous tour he started falling back a lot because he cracked his voice during recording Keep the Faith in 91. It spooked him so much he never wanted that to happen live. MJ would signal when he wanted his live mic back on. I'll stand by my assertion that he killed himself during the bad tour and he never fully recovered vocally. He put his everything into that tour and always intended that to be his last.
@Chris Liepe Good vid. MJ was sick around this time. It would be good if you can get Billie Jean live vocals from the Bad tour which is arguably, where he performs this sing at his best.
It somehow still feels more authentic than using autotune, since it's just his raw singing in the help track. Still, there's nothing wrong with using autotune. Like when Disturbed performed on Conan. Tens of millions of people watched it, and having that safety net was totally worth it. It's about delivering the most powerful show, and making people feel. And having a guy on stage miming with two timpani instead of the like nine that are actually needed for the song, is still gripping peoples emotion's in a way that just having Draiman alone on stage simply couldn't. Just like there's a huge difference between the experience of being there and seeing Michael give his all on stage, and just hearing the record on some speakers
As sick as he was, most other artists probably would have canceled the show. Much respect for MJ proving why he was the king 🤴 Taken too soon, possibly because of Oprah and Diddy? 🤔 RIP MJ ❤
Suelo ver y leer muchos comentarios sobre MJ en esta etapa de su vida, que si playbacks y demás a partir del 96 si ni me equivoco. Pero también digo, a ver quién es el valiente que cante y baile en directo. Ah! Y sin autotune, claro 😉
I always wondered why he didn't sing live in this performance, so I thought, even though the overlay fades out towards the end and you can hear his real voice. I've always thought that he turns his mic off so he can lip sync and turns it on when the overlay is done, to focus more on the performance rather than the singing, but I guess he sang the whole time. This has always been one of my favorite Billie Jean performances. I see from the comments that he was sick here, so that makes me appreciate him more.
If I am not wrong.... Michael was trying to sing, even having laryngitis at that time.... After BAD Tour, I am sure he was mixing real voice with recorded voice. And my feeling is: after SO many years on stage, since The age of 6.... that's all ok! It's so interesting hearing his raspy voice....giving his all of dancing, fast moves.....etc. Doing a sequence of non-stop shows. I keep thinking about how many strategies were necessary for the show to be good, despite the tiredness or hoarseness.
To clarify the “help track” is basically the main acapella from the official billie jean mix, for the HIStory Tour they used playback for most of the song after the moonwalk michael stars to sing live aka doing the ad-libs, And for the final Munich mix they didn’t use the mic feed during any parts if the performance until after the moonwalk, hope this helps 😊
Here Michael has problems with his vocal cords and is not healthy, he was sick with his vocal cords (laryngitis). But the Bad Tour is magical and there all the singing is completely live, and absolutely fantastic! There was his peak. Hope you get hold of the Bad Tour 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Michael Jackson ❤️👑
He couldn’t hear himself and the audience didn’t hear these vocals either. That’s like singing as a deaf person basically; all great singers would sound off. They heard the studio track as MJ was miming in this specific performance. These weren’t supposed to be out but got leaked by some notorious hacker back in 2022.
Could he hear himself? That’s what I’ve always wondered. Was he just singing and not really caring what came out since the other sounds were drowning him out?
yeah he couldnt, he had laryngitis so he had to lipsync all the demanding tracks on this tour, he couldnt hear himself and neither could the audience. all they heard was the playback vocals. he shouldve been resting his voice but michael was feeling the songs so much that he sang despite the laryingitis which is why he sounds so hoarse and offkey in this. he was singing without caring how he sounds, just feeling the music.
He couldn't hear himself at all, he didn't even put in his monitors, the reason being just him not liking to wear them. So all he heard was the speakers right into his ears, which were LOUD, louder than usual actually
This leaked audio is nowhere close to being an accurate representation of MJ as a singer. At this point he wasn't taking care of himself anymore. He was using all sorts of drugs, profopol to sleep, he was not in a good physical shape, he was getting older, his vocal chords were no longer able to handle as much singing and the grit he used was taking a toll on him (he recorded Earth Song as the last song for the album because his voice was going to be shot for weeks after recording one specific song for an album, imagine if he tried singing live with anywhere close to such intensity with the tour scheduling) and when you're older and not in as good of a shape doing a physical show with a lot of dancing alone is going to reduce your ability to sing the songs live at the same time. It is pointless to "analyze" this audio for vocals unless you want to know what being in bad shape, doing drugs, not sleeping well or at all, singing with full grit for over a decade and dancing full out in a live show does for your ability to sing during said live show.
you're right on the first point, he had laryngitis for a short period in 1997, but he wasn't planning on cancelling the tour, you're confusing with the Dangerous Tour, which was indeed cancelled
This one was hard to watch. I know you're not pilling on Mike, even reasoning with us as to why he may have needed the assistance but it's still like watching Muhammad Ali in the twilight of his prime. We don't want to think of our heroes as mortal men, we'd rather keep the illusion of their grandeur in our memories. Long time Mike fans know that they turn on his Mike at the end for the "Dog on Lover", "you're just a city girl", and the beatbox parts. I personally do not want to see how this sausage was made
I don't know what the point of showing this is. MJ at this stage of his career was having problems with his voice. He sang Billie Jean live on three different tours: Bad, Victory and Dengerous. And these vocals are from the History Tour, they are not the best. You should have heard him sing on the BAD Tour or the Dengerous Tour.
Pour les fans hardcore de MJ, je me demande quelle est la mauvaise nouvelle la plus dure à encaisser : - il n'est plus vivant -90% de ses grands concerts étaient en fait bidonnés
If you wanna hear Micheal with basically no laryngitis and with all background singers and his mic being fully on throughout the whole concert (with playback being over it of course), I recommend the history tour in Brunei: ruclips.net/video/pOLIlv92LdI/видео.htmlsi=jtxgHIv3zD-8JuQk. He is super energetic in it too
It was never really important to me whether Michael sang live. And I could also imagine that it was a challenge in terms of fitness to choreograph his brilliant dance. It was the atmosphere and seeing him dance live, it was real magic at his shows.
@@Whiplashed What? LMAO the Dangerous tour was mostly sung live and it's a fact so what are YOU even talking about? He sang majority of the songs live and before the tour started he rehearsed the entire show completely live, you don't know what you're talking about and it shows.
Take this down. MJ was sick and couldn’t sing, he just kept following the playback. Not meant to be heard. There are so many real live performances why putting this one out ?

And these vocals are from the History Tour, they are not the best. You should have heard him sing on the BAD Tour or the Dengerous Tour.
Pour les fans hardcore de MJ, je me demande quelle est la mauvaise nouvelle la plus dure à encaisser :
- il n'est plus vivant
-90% de ses grands concerts étaient en fait bidonnés
If you wanna hear Micheal with basically no laryngitis and with all background singers and his mic being fully on throughout the whole concert (with playback being over it of course), I recommend the history tour in Brunei: ruclips.net/video/pOLIlv92LdI/видео.htmlsi=jtxgHIv3zD-8JuQk. He is super energetic in it too
can you do Morphine by michael jackson
It was never really important to me whether Michael sang live. And I could also imagine that it was a challenge in terms of fitness to choreograph his brilliant dance. It was the atmosphere and seeing him dance live, it was real magic at his shows.
i know theres no great audio of this song, but it would be cool if youd react to dream away by michael!
He mimed pretty much everything after 1990
1996*
dangerous tour was still live for the most part.
@erenyeeagah204 no it wasn't lol
@@Whiplashed from the 17 songs, 10 were sung life. plus the extended ending for man in the mirror.
@@Whiplashed What? LMAO the Dangerous tour was mostly sung live and it's a fact so what are YOU even talking about? He sang majority of the songs live and before the tour started he rehearsed the entire show completely live, you don't know what you're talking about and it shows.
Where can I find the multitrack for this?
HIStory Tour wasn't live. And Michael Jackson was sick during this performance. That's why Bad Tour is way better.
Bad Tour was his worst tour imo, and by a huge margain
The HIStory tour was 90% playback. I was in Prague, Milano and Nice....and I was soooo disappointed. He should have stop after the Bad tour.
Take this down. MJ was sick and couldn’t sing, he just kept following the playback. Not meant to be heard. There are so many real live performances why putting this one out ?
because it's the only one with actual multitracks
He was sick that evening. I’ve heard other live performances via his primary mic and it’s quite obvious.
