Protip...NEVER jerk your bars for a manual or hop. You want to be as fluid as possible. A proper hop involves damn near every muscle group throughout the entire motion

english bunny hop (although im english and hate the name) is really good for narrow trails at high speed and when you are going fast and have to hop sometyhing but straight into a down hill transition so you dont want the height

Hey, Phil.....I've got one for you. In downhill ski racing, racers will "pre-jump" a slope where the tendency is to catch air. The skier knows he will be faster on the snow than in the air so he does this to not catch air and skims the ground and forces the ski tips down. The equivalent in mountain biking in the equivalent of an "English" pre hop and then a shove of the bars downwards to catch the slope as quickly as possible. I often pop my back tire up first so I am all already falling downward and tilt the bike to the angle of the slope. Kind of a reverse of an "American". This can be used to milk speed like a pump to an upcoming jump or section where you can maybe squeeze in another pedal stroke. Sometimes you have to bunny hop to stay low. Thanks for the vids!

I can think of a couple more uses for the English hop. When on a skinny with a drop turn in it, you can slightly hop and turn yourself so you can make it around. Also when going up very far spaced steps. You can hop your front wheel up one step and rear wheel up another step at the same time.

learning an english bunny hop is crucial to learn the rear wheel hop in my opinion. i couldnt rear wheel hop till long after i learned both types. reguarless of the usefulness of a move you should takr the time to learn it anyway because its another way to learn bike control. so i dont know if thats a situation. but its a good reason to learn the english bunny hop. and for all of you who dont think the 2 are related, find someone who can rear wheel hop but cant english bunny hopo. u wont.......

I just wave my arms like a madman and scream, seems to get the message across as people will move out of the way. Otherwise if you're talking about in the woods, just bail. Its safer for you and the bike (bike's momentum is low compared to when you add to it and make it 4 times as much, that's why your bike can slam into a tree after you bail and your wheels usually don't get bent).

Hi Phil, I got some limited flight time with both methods (with just 3-days of trying), but how in the world do you get your hips into the bar? My front wheel returns to the ground before I can pop the back if I try to get my hips into it thus negating any airtime. I think I got to either go all out and jump into the bars or build up my athletism.

What's the best placement for my handlebars for the American bunny hop, LOW on the stem or HI on the stem? Also should I lean my bars forward or more towards me? I'm 5.6" so my bike might be a little big for me,but that's something I'll have to deal with for the time being

Desperate times calls for desperate measures. If I can't get a bunny hop in time, do I attack the terrain or do a crappy hop?

Good stuff. I mainly ride clipless, would it be better to practice these techniques on flats?

yes, with clipless you learn the wrong technique, relying too much on your feet.

I found 26 much easier to hop. Twenty years later after being a roadie I bought a 29" and have to relearn everything to get the wheels high enough .

I used to race XC and road bikes so I learned hopping on a super long stem and with clips. All my hops are very english even when I started riding bmx recently. This really annoys me because I keep casing my back wheel on ledges and not using the whole take off when doing jumps. What should i focus on to unlearn jumping like my feet were in clips? (My hops are pretty high but its nothing compared to a normal american bunnyhop).

I can kind of get my wheels in the air but I cannot manual and I can’t jump either What should I try first to do? Manual or bunny hop

When did the different hops become American and British? I'm from the uk and as a kid (30yrs ago) used what you call the American bunny hop

+nick williams not sure, but probably when people started looking for coaching to help improve their skills and the instructors needed a way to differentiate between the two. I grew up with the American bunny hop being called a bunny hop. When I raced BMX, I heard some people call it a pro hop but outside of BMX racing I didn't hear that term used.

sometimes if you are riding and someone calls out to you to do a trick it is easier to do an english than an american becasue it is more intuitive
