Gee Mack, your lessons are extremely helpful in teaching me to funk up my tired old blues licks. Keep producing lesson videos - you break it down and build it back up for us, keeping it real the whole time.
Love that you addressed the TONE thing, Gee. You're so on point with that: CLEAN amp...or no amp at ALL. Lots of funk guitar was recorded DI. (Prince, Nile Rodgers, etc.). It's all about that clean, percussive groove, baby. Single coil pups help, too!
Right. That quick and abrupt treble sound with James Brown is everything. No smooth rich Gibson sound or thick tone people usually want. It is the James Brown sound, is the only way I can describe it.
You're an unbelievably funky dude. I'm happy you're so informative and actually try to be helpful for people who want to get funky but are having trouble figuring out how. Your cissy strut jam with Kamasi Washington stays on repeat on my phone.
Your so cool gee mack, your as funky as james brown, sly stone, prince and all those other funky layers out there love your stuff that last bit you played kinda sounded like goerge benson! Wicked stuff dude!
I were so glad when I saw a new video by you!! Your attitude towards life and music seems so funky, which is really cool. You're the man! That's one beautiful looking jazzmaster aswell man and you definitely know how to treat it right by funkin' it up.
Hey Gee mack do you think you could do a tutorial on how to play kiss by prince? great funky pop tune I love the last part when he plays high up the neck think it's in e minor 9 but can't work the rest out! Been looking for online tutorials but there aren't any! Keep plying the funk man!
Welcome back pilgrim! You teach so much with so little. I'm feeling it bro. I aint trying to holla no more Mr No hola Back Gee Mack! Rappin Duke is learning guitar and you got me starter with the 1st chank strum video...peace
Exactly!! simplicity! like in a James song or James Brown and the JB's he'd say in the middle of the song like play in this or that and they'd stay on that note half the dang song then switch towards the end. It's always the end of the song when the groove gets real hot then the song fades out lol.
Welcome Back GMac...! Love this funky lesson. You said it all when you said it's all in the tone. Nice single pole sounds and you don't need the whole chord when the fragments will do. Thanks for posting and don't stay away so long next time. Zimonslot, as a whole, R & B and Soul music is about some serious rhythm and clean is the formula. Now funk, ala PFunk since you mentioned Eddie Hazel, has the psychedelic element to it and Michael Hampton, Ricky Rouse, Blackbird McKnight and others are still splitting eardrums on a nightly basic. Ernie Isley is still stomping on the Octavia and Fuzz Face as he has been for 5 decades now so some brothers are still blowing up Marshals and Mesa's in the name of Funk/Rock. On the other hand, James Brown would have fired Jimmy Nolan and Catfish Collins on the spot if he heard one ounce of distortion...! lol
Not to mention Kool's Charles Smith and the amazing "Sugarfoot" Bonner from Ohio Players. Cornell Dupree anyone? Ooohyeah. Great video. I was hoping at the end you would go into a Grant Green-y thing. I'm still trying to figure out exactly what is played in last 2 beats of 'Funky Stuff': 1,2, rest and bee bah bop(?). All the best.
Love the vibe bro i can see that skank funk coming out those hands, appreciate the good vibes you are sharing, keep it funky and forget about the “always right” players the important thing is to keep it funky
I love it but could you please play Little Groove maker for me no one on your tube has play that funky groove jet but I think you the one who got it please play the Guitar groove from little groove maker please
However.....the D9 works in a improvisation sliding into the Pocket for a change up. You can talk a little over it like james liked to do or even millie jackson. Then going back into the Minor really does not make the grove messy at all.
very nice! I like your video's. I subscribed! It sounds like your playing in the D-dorian mode cause your using B note and that is not in the key of D-minor but B-flat is. And somtimes you use the D-minor key notes. I am confused! I think funk is just do what does sound good some notes changes.
You are so right about trying to play funk with overdrive. This is why I have no respect for shredders. They can play a lot of notes per second but they have no musical ear. It should be just obvious that funk uses a clean sound and the stylings make no sense with sustain. Duh!
Thank god someone who actually has a good feel teaching funk lessons on RUclips. Charismatic as well! Good stuff.
OH MAN! I could listen to this all day. Funky vibes on 10!
Gee Mack, your lessons are extremely helpful in teaching me to funk up my tired old blues licks. Keep producing lesson videos - you break it down and build it back up for us, keeping it real the whole time.
One of the things I love about James Brown is that super-clean sound on the guitar strums -- it emphasizes the rhythm.
DucksDeLucks Yep me too!

No music is strictly limited to a single scale. You can play a D minor major 6 chord which is what he plays over d minor because they are close enough
you got the funk ¡¡¡¡
right on. thanks.
Occaras glad you dug it!
Thank you!
Eddie Hazel played with distortion. But he was really a rock guitarist. Come to think of it... why are there so few black rock guitarists?
🤘🏾🎸

Gee, you have more funk than some bands combined.
You are so right about trying to play funk with overdrive. This is why I have no respect for shredders. They can play a lot of notes per second but they have no musical ear. It should be just obvious that funk uses a clean sound and the stylings make no sense with sustain. Duh!
You're bad as hell!
