  • A track walk on the abandoned West Loop (Westschleife) of the old Österreichring, today known as Red Bull Ring.
    The Österreichring was one of the finest Formula One circuits in the 70's and 80's. In 1996 the track was shortened and the West Loop was abandoned.
    Today there are rumours that the West Loop could be back into use within a couple of years. But as you can see in my video, there is a lot of work to do before this part will be suitable for racing again.
    Look also at the abandoned Mashall Post at 5:05
    I made this track walk on Friday June 23, two weeks before the Austrian GP.
    Thanks for watching this video.

    Who ever was clever enough to keep the old section of the track was a genius!! Most of the other old tracks (Kyalami being my favorite that has been partly demolished) are lost as something else was built there or it was demolished and nature took back what belonged to it. Amazing to see the old section in tact and in fairly good condition too! Epic upload

      Agree. It's good that section is still there, even if it is not used anymore. You named old Kyalami, but another example is old Zandvoort. I saw you already discovered the video ;)

      @@Circuitsofthepast yeah thats awesome, just because it isn't used doesn't mean we don't want to see it 😉.. Yeah I saw that vid it's cool, Kyalami is my favorite as its an hours drive from ym home and watching old videos Keke Rosberg rip around it and break the lap record, magic! It's cool to see the Zandvoort golf course owner tried to keep the course part unchanged just with grass I can live with that..

    Correction: "what will forever be remembered as the finest Formula 1 track of all time". This almost brought tears to my eyes.. Österreichring, more than any other, was the perfect circuit for the near-1000hp F1 cars of 1987 to stretch their legs.. The poetic vision of these cars as they thundered around this ultra-fast and undulating circuit, with showers of sparks coming off their skid plates, will never be forgotten.

    Cool!! Finally someone who took the trouble to fill this gap :). Very nice and detailed. It would have been perfect with a walk to the old boschkurve down the stand, to hoghlight the distance from the current circuit and the cutting of the former banking. But it's very good nontheless!

    As I recall, Dietrich Mateschitz wanted to restore the circuit to it's former glory, but was facing opposition from local authorities & environmentalists. With his passing, I don't know if Red Bull themselves will still push on with what could be a fantastic memorial to him.

    I am afraid of Zandvoort is loosing its remarkable track character during modernising for upcoming Formula one races depending on strict safety rules. Greetings from an Austrian fan. It's always great fun to watch you dutchmen support Max Verstappen in Spielberg.

    • @Circuitsofthepast
      @Circuitsofthepast  4 года назад

      I was also afraid they will ruin Zandvoort for F1. It's the track I have the most beautiful memories by far. In the early 90's I was there almost every weekend.
      However, they will modify only 3 corners. The Hugenholtz Corner will be moved inside a little, to create a small run-off on the outside. They will also change the shape a little. Now it's a true hairpin, but it will become a parabola.
      The Hans Ernst Corner (for me it's still the Nissan Corner) wil become faster. And the most spectacular adjustment will be on the Arie Luyendijk Corner. That one will become an 18 degrees banking, so F1 carn can take it with open DRS.
      Fortunately, the track will keep it's character. Actually, my biggest concern was they would cut off the Gerlach Corner and Hugenholtz Corner to enlarge the paddock. That was an old plan from the late 80's. That would have ruin the track. Fortunatley, that's not gonna happen.

    • @JeffSyam
      @JeffSyam 3 года назад +1

      @@Circuitsofthepast I think the recipe of why current design of Zandvoort is still beautiful, because they keep Hermann TIlke away from ruining it.
      If they did, I believe the first corner he'll erase is the Hugenholtz itself.

    • @Circuitsofthepast
      @Circuitsofthepast  3 года назад +1

      @@JeffSyam I also thionk Tilke would have redesigned the Tarzan Corner (first corner) into a very slow hairpin for overtaking. If the Grand Prix settles at Zandvoort for a long that coild be an issue anyway, because the Tarzan Corner is actually to fast for modern F1 to overtake.

    • @JeffSyam
      @JeffSyam 3 года назад

      @@Circuitsofthepast Although radius is different, but that corner remind us of Suzuka's 1st corner, a race track designed by John Hugenholtz. I would be pissed if they change it. But you can see Suzuka's 1st corner stay unchanged until now.
      Btw, I know Zandvoort wasn't designed by John, but you can see similarity of ideas: Flowing fast corners and few chicanes.

  • @Kpiotr
    @Kpiotr 7 лет назад +3

    Wow, the left kink after the first corner/chicane is quite sharp, must have been a bit scary in cars with little to no downforce. Did you need any permits to go there? I was there 3 yrs ago and did not realize you can just enter the West Loop...

    • @Circuitsofthepast
      @Circuitsofthepast  7 лет назад +3

      Actually, it was officially not allowed to enter the old section. However nobody send me back. Before my vacation I wrote all operational permenent circuits on my list, also the Red Bull Ring. But they didn't respond, so I had to do it this way.

    I love watching these videos. I was lucky to watch the 1984 season back then and then to see what they look like now. It was sad at first to watch this video but afterwards I saw another video, dated April '17 showing the work being done to rework those sections so to bring the WEC to race there. Yes!!

    • @Circuitsofthepast
      @Circuitsofthepast  7 лет назад

      +Robcart944 This video was shot on June 23 this year. The works, two chicanes, are just a begin. But to make this section suitable for racing again will be a long way to go. What I heard is that it will not be easy to get permission to reuse the West Loop. If it will be reused, it will take many years.

      Haha, yep always rains when you don't want it to! If you fancy a trip to the UK you could try Brooklands?! I think some of it still exists including some of the banking though some of it is now an industrial estate. It was one of the worlds first banked circuits I believe. Also there's another banked circuit in France hidden somewhere right in the middle of nowhere and apparently in very good condition

      If it will be reused ever there will be two chicanes in the parcours. And yes, also the run off is a big issue here. On the left side of the track are trees, and the landscape runs steep downhill. So it will not be easy to create a run off here.
