  • Starlit Citadel reviews the Pathfinder Beginner Box, with Kaja Sadowski and Joanna Gaskell. The Pathfinder Beginner Box is a comprehensive starter kit designed to give new players everything they need to begin a campaign or play through an adventure in the popular Pathfinder Roleplaying Game system. It's a great toolkit for newcomers to Pathfinder, and particularly helpful for players who have never played a tabletop RPG before.

    I love this review of the Pathfinder Beginner Box. I've watched it at least 3 times. Easily still the best review of the Beginner Box out there. I really miss StarlitCitadel, awesome reviews!

    Yep, you can start with the Beginner Box, and then grab the Core Rulebook, and any of the other hardcover books you find useful as you develop your campaign. The map that comes in the beginner box is designed for a specific adventure on one side, but is a plain grid on the other and can be used for any session you'd like.

    I've always been a bit intimidated by D&D table top games. Perhaps this is the best introduction. I think I might be getting this. Thanks Ladies for the great, short review!

      I realize you wrote this 3 years ago and perhaps you're already at this level, but once you get into it and have studied it for a bit you'll find yourself making new PCs from memory. You'll still have to look things up in the books but you'll know exactly where to look.

    The Bestiary Box is useful if you want all of the monster pawns, but you can get by with just the Bestiary books and some generic tokens for monsters. I think the Beginner Box is enough to give you an idea of how you like to play, which will dictate future purchases. You can pick up some of the Adventure Paths if you like pre-written adventures, or pick and choose core books/supplements as you develop your own campaign or setting. There's a lot of freedom.

    Well, when I was that age, I was reading sci-fi and fantasy novels and hiding around the corner to watch my friend's older brother and his friends play D&D, because they didn't want girls around for their games. I didn't get into RPGs until college, but it wasn't necessarily for lack of trying.

    Great review! I have two additional quibbles about the cardboard cut-outs. While the artwork is gorgeous, for those of us with "aging eyesight" it's often hard to pick out the details. Second, ends/tips are cut off for individuals wielding large weapons. Otherwise, the stand up counters work great!

    Paizo, the company that makes Pathfinder, has outstanding customer support and community interaction. And EVERY one of the core books/guides is available as a pdf for only $9.99, which is a great value. Pathfinder is an excellent RPG system and similar enough to pre-fourth edition D&D iterations that it's easy to pick up for D&Ders who want to give it a try.

    there are no level adjustments. Its up to the GM to allow or disallow certain races. If you're still interested in level adjustment, look into the advanced race guide, they have racial power levels that gm's can set that limit what races are playable beyond the initial player races.

  • @StarlitCitadel
    @StarlitCitadel  11 лет назад

    Not quite, unfortunately. They have put out a few other pawn collections, but they're either Adventure Path-specific (they've done one for Rise of the Runelords and one for Skull and Shackles), or monsters (the Bestiary Box).

    I love Pathfinder, so much. The only problem I have with the system is I can't find anything on level adjustments for playing a Half-Dragon, Drow and such .. but that has nothing to do with product here...

    If you want a good single player game with RPG elements, try Mage Knight. You won't be doing much role playing but there is leveling up, world exploration and monster fighting. Although it is more strategy based than dice based.

    I think they should have included more adventures in the box. You get one to start with. That's it. But you can download a few more from their site.
    Also they provide resources to upgrade from the characters you make with the box to characters you can use while playing the "full" game. But I think they should have just made the character sheets the same to begin with.

    Yes. Unlike FFG's Edge of the Empire Star wars RPG beginner box - pre-made characters, PLUS rules for rolling your own.
    No character creation rules in EotE.

    Is combat in the Pathfinder system tactical at all? What purpose doe the map serve other that a general representation of your surroundings? Not trying to nitpick, just curious :). Thanks!

      +David Williamson I would say it is quite tactical. Check out the RUclips channel Dawnforgedcast because there is a series of videos that teaches the system that includes demonstrations of play and of certain rules.

    Great review, I'm going to get it.
    Are there cutouts of the other races and classes in a separate box?

  • @ScottBuck1843
    @ScottBuck1843 12 лет назад

    Because level adjustments simply don't work. Even the people who created the game said they didn't like its final implementation. Something that was worth a +1 level adjustment at early levels was never worth it 4 or 5 levels later, not to mention the huge deficit of hit dice to start with.

  • @StarlitCitadel
    @StarlitCitadel  11 лет назад

    Unfortunately, it's not. You need a minimum of 1 Game Master and 1 Player Character to make Pathfinder (or any RPG that I know of) work. I don't see anywhere in the review where we talk about playing it alone -- we do talk about the Game Master's role as being unique, and designed for 1 person, but they need to be working with player characters for the game to work.

      I think the part where someone was wondering about 1 player is at 4:45 "I am playing it a lot on my own" that might have confused them.

    I want to get started with pathfinder, but i don' t really know what i need.
    Can i buy the beginners box, and later the core rulebook and the bestiari box?
    Do you need to buy/print other maps for different adventures (in the beginnerbox or the rulebook?)
    Do you need a bestiari book by the bestiari box?
    Could you help me? Like your video btw :-)

      The Pathfinder Beginner Box includes everything you need to play Pathfinder from 1st level to 5th level. There are even a few Beginner Box adventures that are free on Paizo's web site. If you enjoy the Beginner Box the first book you should buy is the Pathfinder Core Rulebook.

    There should be more women presenting rpg stuff back here in Germany =)
    And it's for sure that even the German Pathfinder product output beats the one of DSA 4.1, which has usually been the first player in this category.

    See, I don't like that. Sure, since I'm the GM 99% of the time I could just impose level adjustments but it's not unreasonable to have a mostly human/elf/dwarf party with a couple of weird additions. I think it's balanced to be 5 levels behind everyone to be able to play a half-dragon. Most of the changes to 3.5 with pathfinder I like but I never understood dropping level adjustments.

    It's hit-and-miss. The female figures all look fairly young, and most are attractive with the small waist/big boobs combo. There is more muscle definition than I'm used to seeing, and the dwarves are larger-built, as they should be, but we're still pretty low on body diversity. One thing that is worthy of note is the range of weapons/poses they get -- there are women with giant swords, women wielding axes and other "unfeminine" weapons, and generally getting to look as badass as the men.

  • @MsNosis
    @MsNosis 12 лет назад

    finally a game that presents dwarven women! one question though: are all the female characters presented in the stereotypical way as really "sexy", with skinny bodies and large tits, or are there a more interesting true diversity of cardboard representations of the women (say, really muscular ones, old and gray ones, fat ones, plain ones and so on)

      It kind of is. D&D kidna blew up around 3.0 it was big and bulky. So then there was a split. Pathfinder and 3.5 were released. Pathfinder was like an alternate D&D. Then D&D had that horrific 4.0 and then rebooted with 5.0 a simpler easier D&D but Pathfinder chugged on carrying that classic 3.5 era style of D&D. That's why many pathfinder book are (3.5 compatible)

      So does literally every tabletop rpg. We get it, Dungeons and Dragons did it first. That doesn't mean they did it best ;)

      Pathfinder is sometimes called D&D 3.75. The primary designer Jason Buhlman, that works for Paizo, based it off of D&D 3.5 (using the Open Game License (OGL)). There was some cleanup of the rules, like the Combat Manuevers rules were simplified a bit, and they got rid of something called "dead levels", meaning that in Pathfinder, you get something every time you go up a level (in D&D 3.5 there were a few holes with this), there was also a bit of an attempt at more balancing of the classes. After the release of the Pathfinder core rules, Pathfinder came into it's own with Paizo's world setting and tons of supplements and expansion material.
