This is the issue with going with the grain on the cheeks and mustache. Any kind of different pressure and the beard gets too short. Better to use a #8 (little over 1 inch) for the sides against the grain (it doesn’t leave the beard blotchy because it only takes the very ends off) and free hand the front bit.
