Back in 2017, I got my doctorate in Anthropology. The previous year, I was talking to my grandmother and she asked why I was still going to school, and I told her "I am going to be a doctor, grandma. I am almost there." I was expecting her to be brimming with pride that her grandson is going to have a doctorate. Instead, her response was, "Yeah... but not a real doctor." It was a bit disappointing but it is what it is. This idea that only MD's are real doctors is pretty common. Thats why even after I got my doctorate, I never put my title on anything unless its in a strictly professional capacity. It does suck though because I am really proud of my degrees. I put in an unimaginable amount of work to get there, so I would love to proudly use my title. But in a sort of anti-intellectual world we currently live in, its better for me to sort of hide my education. Fortunately, this seems to be a largely uniquely American thing. I work a lot in other countries, and there, education is valued more and I get to feel that little bit of pride by being called doctor, as its considered rude to not use a person's title.

One of the women, Dr. Wendy Osefo is a PhD. There is a new woman who joined the cast, and for some reason the way she and another woman were speaking was like a PhD isn't a doctor. I'm thinking, are they really trying to downplay the fact this woman is a PhD? Have they never heard of a doctorate? Such an odd stance to take 🤔

I got so much value watching the Depp vs. Herd trial with Dr. Honda, but it's sickening the way people treated him. Death threats for not taking sides on an issue he never witnessed or got involved in. It's so illogical. Ill never forget how i was having lunch with friends at this hibachi place, and there was an Amber terd tip jar at the registers with a poop emoji. I may not be a Amber Heard supporter, but I just thought that was such bad taste for a place of business. People just really took it way too far, IMO.
As for Jordan Peterson, I really don't know anything about him but I have been folling the Ruby Franke story a bit and whats come of light about Jodi Hildebrandt who also got her liscense taken away and its just YIKES
I cant even explain my feelings about this kind of thing. As a grad student of counseling and psychology I'm just so confused/flabbergasted/disappointed that these people somehow make it through the grueling process of school, education, trainings, hours of experience and pass the exams issued by their governing body, and actually get liscened in the first place, and then go out and harm others on both micro and macro levels. I lost my brother (figuratively) to the cult of Jordan Peterson. His philosophies have the surface layer appearance of self building and endurance of character but there’s just too much straw-manning of women and “liberals”. Dr Honda, I don't understand how having an opposing opinion to others is considered harmful to some people and unsafe and bigoted.Even if he is a clinician, he has a right to freely express his thoughts, because quoting him " In order to think you have to risk being offensive". And all this was an attempt to censor him. It was an attack on free speech itself. Already, clinicians can no longer question when a person thinks they have gender dysphoria. All they HAVE TO DO is affirm it. That is completely opposing to standards of healthcare, if doctors are obligated to take the words of the patient as a fact rather than investigating it first. It wpuld be like if I think I have a heart condition, surgeons operating on me without confirming any diagnosis, just based on my words. Complying with everything leads to this.

I enjoyed this video and I'm looking forward for the next ones. The issue is this. He has a government-issued license to practice as a clinician - to treat ALL people in Canada, not just some people. The standard of care within mental health is to not discriminate and to follow the science which recognizes the reality of trans people and the perils of body shaming. The licensing agency is the only barrier between potentially harmful clinicians and the public. That agency stated that he is absolutely free to express his point of view, but he cannot make social media posts that alienate or harm his past, present, or future clients, who could be trans, plus-sized, or otherwise. And thus, he needs a little bit of training to learn how to refrain from making those few posts (out of thousands) that are problematic. That's it. Just a simple training - the sort that we clinicians take every month.

But reading Pageboy and finding out how attacked Elliot Page felt that it was part of a screed directed solely at him (I hadn't known that it was), AND Elliot's somewhat abusive Dad liking that comment and not even talking to his son just furthered the family disconnect. As far as Peterson goes -- I mean, this is the part I DO understand... that there are not clear guidelines on social media use and who is a social media use expert who is also an expert in licensed clinical practice guidelines? I'd want to know who is that expert and what their credential are to actually train on that, and that is a valid criticism and question.
HOWEVER, as I think most of us who have worked as professionals know -- there have always been standards and regulations about how we can behave towards the public -- and although social media is new, TV isn't new, radio isn't new, and getting caught on tape though rarer in the past isn't new, or being recorded or having letter exchanges or emails even isn't that new. And so as members of the public we are 100% free. But as professionals with licenses or any accreditations, we have ALWAYS been restricted by professional guidelines. As a preface, I hold NONE OF THESE VIEWS but have the right to have them without any goverment entity intervening: I am free to join westboro and picket funerals with hate speech on those signs. I am free to use racial slurs and homophobic and transphobic slurs as much as I want as a citizen. I am free to join eugenics groups against disability and hold the opinion that people with disabilities should be sterilized or shouldn't be allowed to have medical care and let Darwinism win if I just express those opinions. And if I did any of these publicly I could easily lose every accreditation or license I ever held.
And I feel pretty comfortable saying that I would be surprised if any of his licenses or accreditations are anything he actually uses or requires for what he's currently doing. He honestly probably just keeps it up so that he can pretend to have legitimacy and be performative with these acts. Licensing is only required for working with people as a professional, in a legitimate professional practice following those guidelines, OR teaching or training future professionals in accredited programs. He resigned from his last legit teaching job over 2 years ago, and I don't know when he stopped clinical practice, but it's not listed as his current occupation. He works as a content creator, and for the Daily Wire, and is chancellor of Ralston which is a bogus unaccredited "university". About as useful as a degree from Trump U -- and I'm fine with whatever people want to pay for or believe, you're free to get an unaccredited degree from both Trump and Ralston and hey go for PragerU while you're at it -- but the point is that Jordan Peterson does not require any licenses or accreditations to be a chancellor of a scambait college, nor to be a content creator, podcaster, or to write books, or to do any of the things that have made him a super popular multi-millionaire. I also feel fairly comfortable speculating that the biggest reason that he is putting up the fight of his life against this horrible oppressive regime in Canada that is trying to force him to take a class on social media like "fascists" and not just letting his license lapse is because the longer he draws out this legal fight and paints their judges and government and accrediting and licensing bodies as fascists, the more clicks and even donations he's going to get from uneducated Americans and Canadians and others who don't know that as this is happening he's only making more and more money fighting the government "for his livelihood" over a license he hasn't used probably in years, or at best he stopped needing 2 years ago when he resigned from an accredited university.

Humiliation and shame. I was born intersex 55 years ago inside Tennessee raised female. Wrong decision by doctor raised in Christian family and Christian school. I was always very masculine whipped by teachers, bullied by kids and shunned parents for not exhibiting feminine behavior. In my 20's conversion therapy was offered first. I finally sought out a psychologist and still had to pass through Harry Benjamin Standards of Care over two years signed off by PhD's. Physicians inside Tennessee had to verify I was intersex for the state to amend my birth certificate to male. I have lived a male life almost 30 years now with birth certificate amended so I could have correct identification for drivers license, work and a passport. Someone inside Tennessee recognized me and caught me out alone. The pastor said "People around here don't like it when you change your sex. When born, the doctor made the decision but you changed it." I finally saw a gender affirmative therapist and got a trans related PTSD diagnosis. Affirmative meant they didn't caste blame back on me like the pastor or religious psychiatrist I saw first. Jordan Peterson representing licensed psychologists links up with Ben Shapiro and Matt Walsh to condemn with moral judgements someone like me serving as a healthcare provider in Stealth. Mr. Peterson whines and cries a lot with a persecution complex he brought on himself. The pastor said I brought this on myself. God chose how I was born. Before his illness Mr. Peterson asked himself the question "Do I have the right to be questioning gender?" No he doesn't because it isn't him or anyone in his family. He is supposed to be someone a human being who might be trans could trust because his license represents a profession. He didn't know Eliot Page to make a hateful comment calling their surgery mutilation and the surgeon a butcher. Narcissism with new found belief in an Old Testament god full of judgement and condemnation. He once used Disney characters for his lectures but they are too woke now so he switched to Old Testament Bible Stories. His new schtick about narrative is repackaged Joe Campbell. Tennessee law voided my amended birth certificate back to original birth sex last summer. Sad Matt Walsh, Ben Shapiro and Jordan Peterson with a license to practice working for The Daily Wire in Tennessee ensured I can't return back there to care for my 80 year old Veteran dad since the PTSD diagnosis. Dangerous to live in Tennessee.

II appreciate your thoughts Dr Kirk. However, I think the issue of transgender identity has become a lot more complex in recent years, and I wonder if the science quite reflects that. While perhaps 10 years ago, gender affirming care would have made perfect sense for the handful of transgender persons who needed to transition, most of whom were typically in their 40's, this is no longer the case. The huge uptick in gender reassignment surgery, particularly in teenage girls, points to something else going on, and the backlash in Europe, with many gender reassignment clinics being shut down (being sued left right and centre because such surgeries are incredibly complex and mean a lifetime of medical care that nobody really warns them about, because they receive affirming care), is telling. While I'm not a fan of Jordan Peterson's delivery on social media, as a highly decorated academic (he taught at Harvard for Chrissakes), I don't think he should remain silent about areas of his profession that he deeply disagrees with.

A bit of context here. Jordan Peterson's comments on gender affirmation are in relation to how it is presented to minors. The laws in Canada have moved in a direction where it gives a lot of power to clinicians to override parental consent. I know people who don't want to have kids because they fear they would have their children taken away from them if they disagree with the clinician. And a child could through their school interact with clinician without parents giving consent upfront in some Provinces.

I appreciate your perspective on this, as I’m very conflicted about this case. I’m not a Jordan Peterson fan, and I find a lot of his tweets and opinions extremely bigoted. That being said…..I am interested in where the line is drawn when it comes to a licensed professional talking about their personal beliefs. Peterson definitely seems to cross that line IMO, but I could see other cases that are less clear. For an extreme example, back when homosexuality was in the DSM, could a therapist lose their license for saying they don’t believe homosexuality is a mental disorder since that would go against the scientific consensus at the time?

    • @suras8984
      @suras8984 11 месяцев назад

Yes which is why I do not believe he is crossing the line. His broader point on people sawing off parts of their body as an identity is that children are being sterilized and teens hacking off their breasts in the name of gender identity before their identity and body are finished finished developing. He is trying to bring awareness to a dangerous path we are heading down. He has interviewed a teen who was swept up in this trans agenda and she no longer has breasts and has a deep male voice due to negligent adults. The doctor who removed this teenagers breast still has their license and probably still performing this surgery on teens. Where is the line? As much as doctors are allowed to perform these life altering medical procedures on children Dr. Peterson should be allowed to voice his opinion against this.

You're comparing the actions of someone who is *morally wrong* to the actions of someone who is *morally right*. You should really ask yourself why you're doing that. It's a choice. It would only appear the the same if you don't have a conscience.
Are you really not able to integrate the reality that people can be punished for doing both good and bad things? Taking the punishment away from people who do bad things in NO WAY helps protect people from being punished for doing good things. Do you know what actually protects people? Know what right and what's wrong and acting accordingly.

@@jnl3564 Don't attack people for asking good faith questions. Ad Hominem BS like that isn't dismantling an argument, it's trying to shame the person for daring to voice their concerns.
@emel3925 That's a difficult question to answer and really the only answer I feel confident about giving is "It's complicated, and not always applied consistently" It's also good to remember that psychology is VERY new still. By the time I took courses, Freud had already been thoroughly debunked and now most of the stuff I learned in school is being reexamined as well. Prejudice can have long lasting effects in any science or social science, and all of these were subjects pioneered by upper-class white men with a lot of education but not a lot of perspective. That bias is in every academic subject (for example, look at all those ancient artifacts that are so clearly dildos that spend decades being classified as religious artifacts b/c straight men couldn't imagine them serving any practical purpose . Psychology is constantly having to reexamine and challenge ideas, and often the line between "radical theorist" and "total nutjob" isn't clearly demarcated, especially when it's still mostly upper class white guys calling the shots. That's probably why despite Peterson doing some clearly unethical things, including spouting ideas that mainstream psychology has already thoroughly debunked, he still kept his license for a loooooong time.
Your question is hypothetical, but I have a good example from real history that might answer some of it. Dr. Henry Anonymous was a big spokesperson for the gay rights activism at the start of the 70s, declaring a lot of APA claims were way off base. He acknowledge he was gay and a psychiatrist. However, he only appeared to speak wearing a face mask, baggy clothes that hid his body shape, and a microphone that distorted his voice greatly. He knew the things he was saying could cost his job and maybe even his license thanks to the homophobia of the time, but at the same time he could speak on many of the very real flaws in how the APA was looking at and addressing homosexuality, and how those flaws end up hurting far more than they could ever help (an approach Peterson has sadly gone the opposite route with, ignoring the real experiences of the trans community and repeating claims long after they've been debunked). We now know his name was John Fryer, so he did get credit and could come out later in life. But it's always a risk to go against the mainstream especially if your exposing bigotry, but a GOOD argument can change people's minds eventually, whereas relying on rhetoric to induce fear will only ever be able to close minds. It's really interesting to compare the two (both were addiction specialists originally) and then contrast how different their methods were. Definitely highlights the different between the very real fear some face thanks to misinformation and the work needed to counter it vs the fame and spectacle that will always draw the more ego driven away from putting in the work needed to uphold any of the standards and ethics expected of their career choice.

  • @hannahemileeee

Okay so these are the questions that come to mind from my point of view. The things Peterson are saying would be offensive to certain clients he would have coming in, but not all therapists can be everything to everyone. I’m not condoning anything he said but even if he didn’t say anything publicly online, he still shouldn’t be the one to treat for example a trans person because I’m almost positive he wouldn’t be the right fit for them. Even if he had never said a word online he still wouldn’t be a good fit for that person, and at least now if they saw the things he posted they would be sure he wasn’t the therapist for them instead of finding out face to face. I think with freedom of speech comes the right for your thoughts to offend others. It’s not pleasant and I don’t want to offend anyone, but in order to have free speech and thought you have to have the right to think things that might offend others. In my opinion not all therapists should be forced to be the same or approach things the same way. What if someone is a Christian and goes to someone who thinks all Christian’s are homophobic and bigots? That probably isn’t the right fit for that client. There should be regulations but not ones that seem to shoehorn people into only being allowed to think or speak in one way. There should be professionalism online but my thought process is, nobody can be everything for everyone and this falls into that category for me. Everyone should have a therapist to go to who will fit their world view and even if I don’t agree with your point of view you should have a place to go. Not all therapists should be the same or think the same because then you’re blocking a large amount of people from receiving care in a way they’re comfortable with. Again not trying to be controversial this is just where I’m coming from trying to see both sides and genuinely want to hear your opinion on this because I respect your opinion and thoughts.

It’s really weird anyone would be surprised that you try to be unbiased as a therapist. I’m pretty sure that’s a part of what being a therapist is supposed to be. 😂 That tells me that person has never been to therapy a day in their life. That’s the most basic knowledge about therapy and how it works. Maybe don’t go to a therapy channel if you want a drama channel take.

I love how people likes to complain about others who don't agree with them... just go to someone else who will agree with you.. it's not that hard people lol

It would be beneficial if you knew more about Peterson and his work via what people say about him. This could be a very insightful dialogue however not if you primarily prioritize information provided from a media witch hunt. To have a fair assessment on this, I suggest looking into Peterson, his work, and his direct words in full context before speculating. Losing his licence for having an opinion and worldview outside of the mainstream is not just; whether you agree with his ideology or not he did nothing unethical in his practice. By that premise, it justifies the very same people who reported you over not agreeing with your way of expression or point of view re: Depp/Heard.

Wouldnt justify the complaint Dr Kirk got because he (as advertised) uses his experience and education in psychology to make observations, while simulatenously behaving within the ethics required of his professional license, whereas peterson uses his profession and education to incorrectly miguide people to consider his opinions as facts. Dr Kirk has also reacted and watched peterson videos, you personally just havent seen them

I like a lot of what Peterson has done, but the way he acts on twitter is completely unacceptable. If he was simply expressing unpopular opinions that would be one thing, but the guy has developed a serious propensity for being a grade A asshole.
