More importantly, this movie was, also, directed by Bob Fosse!! He had a distinctive visual style as a film director as well, which the director of the movie version of Chicago (Rob Marshall) very purposely incorporated into his film (so, Chicago is basically a more modern movie made to look like it was directed by Bob Fosse...). He did that because Fosse not only choreographed the original stage production of Chicago, he directed it AND co-wrote the script! So, Chicago just has Fosse-influence all over it.
Britt, you absolutely MUST treat yourself to an evening watching this movie. It's stellar. Liza is the daughter of Judy Garland, and she was every inch the performer that her mother was. She is one of the last Old School broadway Stars and a member of the small club of performers who have won an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a Tony, a Grammy, and an Emmy. She was also the protege of Bob Fosse, hence the beautiful lines in her presentation. Really, Britt, watch this movie, you will love it! Liza and Joel Grey together were Magic. Thanks for sharing this number. 🙂
Liza was nominated for two Oscars The Sterile Cuckoo and Cabaret which she won as Best Actress for this role. She not only has Oscars but Golden Globes, Tony's , Grammy's and Emmys to name a few of her awards. She was and is a phenomenal performer. Her talent she comes by naturally from both her parents. Her first film appearance was at the age 3 in The Good Old Summertime at the end of the movie with her mother Judy Garland playing the daughter of her mother's character and the movie was directed by her father Vincent Minnelli.
Liza Minnelli = Fabulous. Little trivia... Freddie Mercury loved her performances. She sang at his tribute concert. The guys in Queen were saying he'd have been overwhelmed.
I saw her perform this in Las Vegas in the seventies along with the tunes from New York, New York. She was absolutely amazing, when she finished the entire audience leapt to their feet with a standing ovation. What a performance it was, but my husband said when he saw her mother, Judy Garland on Broadway in New York, it was even more astounding. I feel very pleased to have witnessed her live. Yessss! Watch the whole movie. Joel Grey won a Tony (stage performance) and an Oscar for the film, and Michael Yorke is outstanding. The title song, Cabaret, is iconic!
When her mother (Judy Garland) died, Judy owed many big stars a lot of money because for several years Judy had been financially broke and had borrowed large amounts of money from her star friends to support her lifestyle. Liza was only 23 when her mother died leaving behind Liza and her two younger siblings. When Judy died she owed money to friends in addition to owing the IRS over $4M in back taxes. Liza was told by the estate's attorney that the debt died with Judy. However, Liza refused to have her mother's legacy sullied by this and immediately went to work. One of the people Judy owed was Frank Sinatra. When Liza wouldn't allow him to forgive the debt, he hired Liza and for the next 9 years Liza worked alongside Frank Sinatra in addition to doing work independently. After 9 years she had finally paid off her mother's debts. I have the biggest amount of respect for Liza Minnelli.
Yes, she’s also the daughter of legendary director Vincent Minnelli. The first concert I ever went to when I was 14 in the summer of 1974 was Liza Minnelli. She was touring her Liza with a Z concert was was just brilliant ❤
Being a theater kid, you also ought to know Bob Fosse? This was his choreography, and yep, super iconic. I've seen a couple of stage productions of Cabaret, which differs significantly from the movie (which I also love, btw). My favorite is the 1998 Broadway production with Alan Cumming as the Master of Ceremonies -- which had a revival in 2014, with Alan reprising his role. Emma Stone had a turn at playing Sally Bowles and I thought she was fantastic as she finally got me to make an emotional connection to the character. In any case, your life will definitely be enriched if you check out the film and more of Liza Minnelli's songs, especially live, she is a true entertainer!
The clip is taken from the absolutely outstanding movie production of _Cabaret._ The story takes place in Weimar (between the end of WW1 and Hitler becoming Chancellor) and most of it happens on the stage of the Kit Kat Club where Sally Bowles is the headliner. All of the songs comment on the story of the love between Sally, Brian and Maximilian, and the political background of the rise of the Nazi party. Liza Minnelli gives an era-defining performance in the lead role, absolutely blasts through the stratosphere and into space. She won Best Actress that year, but if there'd been an award for the entire decade, she would probably have won that too. Both on stage, when she's performing the part of a performer, and outside, where she's just an American girl in Berlin. A word for Joel Grey, as the MC, who only appears inside the Club but as far as that goes he matches Liza point for point.
I was a volunteer usher at the Chicago Theater in the 1980's when Liza Minelli performed there. Ushers could see the show in exchange for ushering. I remember her because she spoke to us ushers while we were cleaning up the aisles before the show and she was testing sound and lights. She greeted us and engaged us in conversation. "How are you?" "Is it too cold for you?" "Thanks for what you do." She also asked us to give our opinion of the sound and lighting. When one usher said the sound should be louder, she had the sound person up the volume. She was for real in sharp contrast to other performers (whom I will not name) whose talent I love but who were not as as real as Liza. One star, in fact, asked us to leave -- not caring that clean up would be more hectic for us so close to curtain.
A true "theater baby" where the show and the performance are more important than the performer. Her mother was a perfectionist who also wanted the best for the audience, although not quite as gracious as her daughter.
"Cabaret" (1971), yes, watch the movie because...... It was nominated for 10 Oscars and won 8, including Best Director and Best Actress (Liza). Liza, during her career, won an Oscar, a Golden Globe, an Emmy, a Tony, and was nominated a couple of times for a Grammy.
Re: Christina-you're thinking of Burlque; Cabaret is based on the the Tony Award-Winning stage musical; Mein Herr more or less means "sir" in German. Liza Minelli is not only a Tony and Oscar winning performer, but also the daughter of Judy Garland; both the movie and the musical were directed by the legendary Bob Fosse (Sweet Charity, All That Jazz)
It's German, it's the original movie and she is terrific. It's set in pre-war Germany. Watch the movie if you can find it. Mein heir is my boyfriend or male friend . 5:19
Liza is about as Hollywood as they come. Daughter of Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli, she spent the '70s partying with Halston and Andy Warhol at Studio 54, the '80s she spent in rehab with Liz Taylor, had a couple of gay husbands along the way, and sang and danced her way through it all.
I was a theater kid and dancer in the late '90's and Fosse was well known and idolized by us. I'm surprised that as a theater kid yourself you didn't know him. I'm envious that you know get to discover this amazing director and choreographer.
Mein (mine) herr is just a polite form of address, such as Sir, My Lord. Liza Minelli was the daughter of Judy Garland (Wizard of Oz) and Vicent Minelli (director). She also has a half sister Lorna Lutz who is a singer, but never achieved the same fame.
Have you ever seen 1938 movie The Wizard of Oz? Starring a 16-year old Judy Garland as Dorothy? Lisa Minelli is Judy's daughter. Liza won the Academy Award for Best Actress for this role in Cabaret. At the 45th Academy Awards, the film won for *** Best Director (Fosse), Academy Award for *** Best Actress (Minnelli), *** Best Supporting Actor (Grey), *** Best Cinematography, *** Best Film Editing, *** Best Original Song Score and Adaptation, *** Best Art Direction, and *** Best Sound, holding the record for most Oscars earned by a film not honored for Best Picture. The German phrase "mein Herr" translates to "sir" in English. It can also mean "my lord," "my master," "mister," "monsieur," "sire," "m'lord," or "O Lord".
CABARET is a drama with some perfectly timed comic relief. The musical numbers are very clever and daring for their time. But the story is no laughing matter. An unexpected scene in the second act comes as a complete shock! You’ll know it when you see it…and you should see it.
Mein Herr literally means "my gentleman." But in German usage it's just a polite, formal address, equivalent to saying, "sir." Mein liebe Herr means, "my dear sir."
There was a book titled, "I Am a Camera," by Christopher Isherwood. It was a made into a straight play, and then a few years after that turned into the Broadway musical and called "Cabaret." From there, it became the movie with Liza Minelli. I think the only person to make the transition from the stage version to the movie was Joel Grey as the MC. "Mein Herr" literally means "my mister," or maybe casually, "fella." As others have pointed out, this was choreographed by Bob Fosse. Some of the things you spotted, like the turned-in feet and hunched shoulders, were among his signature moves. Check out "Steam Heat" from Pajama Game some time for a quintessential Fosse number.
Liza Minelli got an Oscar for Best Actress for "Cabaret". Well deserved. Joel Grey (her co-star) also got an Oscar for Best Actor. Again, well deserved.
The movie takes place in a very dingy cabaret in Germany just before the Nazi rise to power. "Mein herr" basically means my man. The character she plays is an American woman (British in the stage show) living in Berlin and running from responsibilities. Throughout the whole movie you see her try to avoid taking anything seriously as the Nazis rise to power affects those around her. It's a very powerful musical, and it's the same songwriters as Chicago.
Liza performed at the Luxor Hotel years ago. I was a security manager at the time and would escort her to her from her car to her dressing room. She was so pleasant. We always chatted a little bit and she’d ask me about my family. Wonderful person. 😊
If you haven't seen the old Cabaret movie, you have an experience coming. Mein Herr, most literally "my mister", something equivalent to "my good woman", or sir.
I was a young teen when I saw this movie. I was absolutely blown away. I became obsessed with her Liza with a Z album, which was sooo different from my usual fare( I grew up in Nashville, went to high school with Lori Anne Crook, Waylon Jennings' road manager lived across the street so I was steeped in country!) Thank you for reminding this old woman of this, imma gonna go jump back down that rabbit hole!
Mein herr is my favourite scene from Cabaret: the song, the choreo, the outfit. The pauses, the rolling movements on the beat, the subtle yet also overtly sex movements, full of tension and release : yeah, the sexiest ever song and dance number.
The film is about the Cabaret that existed in the Weimar Republic before Hitler and Nazis became ascendant. It references Marlene Dietrich's role in the Blue Angel.
Yeah, the creeping fascism and how easy it is to look the other way when it’s not your life being disrupted are major themes in the play and movie. Which somehow seems timely.
Yes! Watch the movie, it's phenomenal. The C. Aguilera movie you're thinking of is Burlesque (with Cher). And this reminds you of Chicago because it's the same choreographer: Bob Fosse.
She definitely inherited her mother's singing voice, if not, arguably, having an even better voice. She made her stage debut at the age of 17, and won her first Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical at the age of 19..... and the rest, as they say, is history. You really cannot go wrong reacting to anything done by Liza. One of the most powerful voices I have ever heard. At the age of 13 she performed a rendition of Over The Rainbow that almost equals her mother's..... by the time she was 20 she was in a class all her own. Just a beautiful voice and a terrific actress.
This movie won 8 Academy Awards (Oscars): best actress, best actor, best director, best cinematography, best art direction, best sound, best editing, best score. It lost out on best picture to The Godfather. You must watch this movie. It was directed by Bob Fosse. In a single 12 month span Fosse won an Oscar for this, a Tony for Chicago, and an Emmy for Liza with a Z.
I think if you’d like this, you would also enjoy “Hey Big Spender from the play “Sweet Charity”, lso choreographed by Bob Fossey. The movie version with Shirley MacLaine is wonderful.
Yes, PLEASE do yourself a favor and watch the movie Cabaret! Other Liza performances I love: "But the world Goes Round" (watch the 1988 "Ultimate Event Tour" video version of it) and also "New York, New York", but make sure to watch the Shea Stadium Liberty Weekend video--"ultimate performance".
Bob Fosse (Chicsgo) directed and choreographed the movie. He was legendary along with his wife, Gwen Verdon. He did an autobiographical movie, 'All That Jazz' with Roy Scheider and Ben Vereeen. He dropped dead on the street with his wife on the way to a revival of "Chicago'.
You have to watch Liza with a Z, her tv concert film, also directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse, who won the Triple Crown of directorial entertainment awards in 1973, the Oscar for Cabaret, the Emmy for Liza with a Z, and the Tony for Pippin. I grew up listening to the album for Liza with a Z, so singing along Liza has been part of my life since the 1970s. The song Maybe This Time from Cabaret finally got me cast in the chorus of my high school musical my junior year (my voice is average at best, but I know that song so well that I delivered it with sufficient oomph to get me a part).
Find Cabaret and see the entire film. Bob Fosse directed and did the choreography. He is known for his minimalist movement. The original of this was called I Am A Camera. Once you have seen this entire film, then go find All That Jazz, which is about Fosse and his choreography. The character who essentially plays him is not named Fosse, but it is a roman a clef, which means they change the name but everyone knows who the character is. He was married to Gwen Verdon. There is a TV mini-series called Fosse and Verdon. Find it, and see it. As a dancer, you need to know these people.
The movie is Cabaret which was directed by the great Bob Fosse. It takes place in 1929-1930 Germany during the ascent of Hitler's thugs the Brownshirts (precursors of the Nazis).
She’s the daughter of Judy Garland and director, Vincent Minnelli. This is the movie Cabaret based on the Broadway hit. Choreography by Bob Fosse. It’s supposed to be a sleazy club in Germany while Hitler is coming to power. And yes they are singing while dancing but since it’s a movie they are lip synching to a playback.
Those 2 movies share nothing else but the title. Liza's is seriously dark, though, about the naughties coming to power in Germany through a broken lens of some broken ppl... Great movie!
Yes it was CABARET, her parents were famous also. Her mother Judy Garland her father was Vincent Minnelli( movie director, producer). Her half sister Lorna Luft, also was an actress.
This is German. Mein means "Mine" and is pronounced just like "Mine" and Herr is like "Hair". Cabaret takes place in Berlin, so they have some German in the movie (like "Welkommen, meine damen und herren" --Welcome ladies and gentlemen). Damen is plural for "Ladies" and Herren is plural for man, so it's "men".
The reason this reminds you of Chicago is because they were both choreographed by the legendary late great Bob Fosse….he had a very distinctive style
And, as s theater kid, Britt, you really need to know Fosse and his work. Here is Bebe Neuwirth, who was in the Broadway revival of "Chicago", explaining a bit about Fosse and his style: ruclips.net/video/OM_Ir6sfjDY/видео.html

Ann Miller, the main female dancer, one of the great tap dancers of her era.
Tommy Rall, the flying man!

Carol Haney dancing with Fosse and Jeane Coyne dancing with Van.

Liza won Best Actress and Bob Fosse won Best Director for Cabaret. The movie is definitely something you would enjoy 👍

It.remimds me of Blue Marlene Dietrich. I was borm during the 60s My mom loved Cabaret, but my mom and dad loved movies.
"Arthur," Starring Dudley Moore and Liza Minnelli is a lost classic comedy movie.
Yes! Watch the movie, it's phenomenal. The C. Aguilera movie you're thinking of is Burlesque (with Cher). And this reminds you of Chicago because it's the same choreographer: Bob Fosse.
Fosse choreographed this. He is all about the small isolations. Amazing
If you know anything about the great Liza Minnelli you know her mother was the fabulous Judy Garland. It's in the genes..!
This is from the 1972 movie Cabaret,, for which Minelli won a Best Actress Oscar. The english translation for Mein Herr is Sir.
It’s set in pre WW2 Berlin. It highlights the decadence of the period.
Ohhh the joy that Theater Kids can display. It warms the cockles of my heart.
You're on point with your comparison with Chicago. Both Cabaret and Chicago's songwriters were 😮Kander and Ebb
You should definately watch the movie. It's a masterpiece.
Great movie!!!
Watch the movie Britt. You'll love it.
I think if you’d like this, you would also enjoy “Hey Big Spender from the play “Sweet Charity”, lso choreographed by Bob Fossey. The movie version with Shirley MacLaine is wonderful.
You MUST see the movie. Truly one of my faves!!
You should watch CABARET.
You’ve seen CHICAGO. My favorite is the movie ALL THAT JAZZ! Bob Fosse’s choreography is unlike anyone’s before him.
Amazing Liza. A real star.
My mom loved Liza and I watched this movie at 16 with her and I WAS OBSESSED!!!!!! That song was on rotation on my little CD player!!!!
How can ya not ❤ Lizza ?? She defines Fabulous..... yes GO watch Liza in Cabaret!! 🎉
You should watch the movie Cabaret. Liza and Joel Grey are amazing. Singing and dancing set in the last days of Weimar (pre-Nazi) Germany
and Joel Gray is the father of Jennifer Gray who played "Baby" in Dirty Dancing.
You have go watch, "All that Jazz." It is loosely based on Bob Fosse's life and choreographs it!
The movie with Christina Aguilera is Burleque.
Love this! You should also take a look at Victor Victoria with Julie Andrews.
Daugther of Judy Garland and Vicent Minnelli (big director).
The movie is Cabaret which was directed by the great Bob Fosse. It takes place in 1929-1930 Germany during the ascent of Hitler's thugs the Brownshirts (precursors of the Nazis).
Oh wow!
Thank you for loving this!
Mein Herr means Sir. Liza is Judy Garland's daughter, and she's incredible. Glad you enjoyed this! :)
Another great song from this movie, where Liza sings with Joel Grey, is Money. Cabaret is a great movie, I think you'd like it.
Money is my husband's favorite song from the show.
Those 2 movies share nothing else but the title.
Liza's is seriously dark, though, about the naughties coming to power in Germany through a broken lens of some broken ppl... Great movie!
I was in rehab with Liza.....2010.....small world......Peace!
Amazing that you have a personal connection with Liza. That's a story for the grandkids :).
Oh, how very interesting you are
@@laba7024Thanks!
Yes it was CABARET, her parents were famous also. Her mother Judy Garland her father was Vincent Minnelli( movie director, producer). Her half sister Lorna Luft, also was an actress.
Liza is amazing! Cabaret is amazing!
Cabaret is a phenomenal movie. Liza won an award for best actress for this role.
Choreography by Bob Fosse. You need to look him up, if you're not familiar with him. Enjoy!! You'll love it, as a dancer.
The athleticism involved in making this is superb
An absolute icon
Liza Minelli is the daughter of Judy Garland.
Classic Bob fossi
Pretty sure this was the original Sexy Chair Dance that Janet and the show Chicago were inspired by.
After watching the movie "Cabaret" you might also like the Bob Fosse's semi-auto biographical "All that Jazz"
Liza is in her late 70's ......... Joel Grey is in his 90's.
Liza has won an Academy Award, an Emmy, and three Tonys for live Broadway theater.
