I Played My First Gig- here's what I learnt...

  • Two years ago I decided I wanted to learn how to play a musical instrument. Learning as an adult with no previous musical knowledge, I wasn't sure I'd ever be any good. Scroll forwards a couple of years and I've joined a ukulele band. I've just played my first gig with them (think village hall with tea and biscuits...)
I still may be on the musically inept side, but here's what I learnt from my first live performance.

My last music lesson was.. 1966? Yeah, right. I found my daughters long disused recorder during an ice storm. Inspired by cabin fever I'm beginning to learn the recorder. I'm so glad I've found your site. For a rank beginner it's good to know that perfection is nice but having fun is a whole lot better. Thank you.

Oh dear, showing up late to an event is always my fear! Glad you found a way to work around it. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

I love listening to your quirky take on life's events. Really glad you did a video on your first gig with the Uke band. And the little reconstructions were ACE.
You need to interview them now for a new post.....
    Now.
You encouraged me to take my soprano recorder to new levels of playing. Well.... encouraged me to re-learn how to read music and play the recorder by reading the music. Thank you.
I never thought I'd be fancying having a go with a ukulele, but I'm now contemplating a ukulele as well as a Clarineo. But hey. You sound like you did great.
So let's have an interview now with band members.....
    Yay.
(Ps. I'm not a huge fan of Tom Jones either and he grew up a mile away from me in Ponty. Hahaha)

Another very enjoyable and extremely well produced video. I can’t imagine how long it took to make this. Well done, not only for your ukulele performance - which actually sounds like a first-time triumph - but a terrific video. Loved it!

@@ClaythorpeMusic You will get better the more you edit. As with your musical skills. And it was worth all your effort because I loved the surprise in your cup at the end. Liked! Subscribed I was already. :)

No plan survives the point of contact
You're absolutely right about fear stopping many people from doing things outside their comfort zone. It stopped me for a LONG time. I finally got inspired by one of my favorite performers Lindsey Stirling to try, as she says "bloom where you're planted"'. And gained courage from a philosopher I follow Jordan Peterson who says "Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today."
Actually planning my first public foray. My wife and I are going to be playing a few songs at our annual Christmas Eve family gathering.
My wife has been learning guitar for the last year and has her first gig this Sunday. She's playing rhythm and singing backup on "I Love Rock and Roll" by Joan Jett. Yeah she has tons more confidence than I do but it's all a process right?

I found your channel because I love to camp and hike and thought it would be nice to have an instrument that's inexpensive and durable when I travel. I've since learned from watching so many videos just how nice the recorder sounds.

Well done., zero to quo hero. 🎉 My piano teacher says slow down to the speed you can play it at and keep going through the mistakes - only the piano teachers in the audience will notice, everyone else is there for a good time. Can’t beat live performance. 👏👏👏

Sounds like your uke group plays a very typical repertoire! I’m slowly getting my uke group away from such songs. Ukulele should be about having fun, not about musical ability. I’ve never seen an audience at any of my gigs take us very seriously! 😂
