  • Wim Hof has developed a method characterized by simplicity and effectiveness. The effects and applicability of this method are being investigated by various scientific institutes, including the Radboud University. Initial results have shown that the method appears to affect the autonomous nervous system and the immune system. This means that application of the Wim Hof Method (WHM) may be of particular importance in the fields of public health, sports and at many other levels.
The effectiveness of this method has been known to Wim Hof for years, which is why he wishes to share it with the world. He wants to ensure that this method will be applied on a large scale. To achieve this, his method is being scientifically investigated, he leads training sessions and workshops and gives interviews to local and international media.
This report discusses how the WHM originated, what the method consists of, which physiological effects it has, which scientific results it has yielded and in which fields the method can be applied.

When I was in my mid teens I was doing breathing exercises like yours to train myself to swim underwater for longer periods. I remember now that around the same time I fell through the ice (I live in Canada), swam back up, climbed out and walked a considerable distance through knee deep snow with no ill effects. I never thought that those two things might be related. I think I'm going to take a closer look into what you're saying.

My world was crumbling, darkness took over my life... in defiant rage I turned to that which I feared the most - The Wim Hof!
I found my balls and stepped in the cold.
2 minutes in I shivered, shook and screamed
3 minutes in I couldn't find my balls anymore
4 minutes in my mind cleared
5 minutes was my goal and by then I was breathing calmly and deeply
6 minutes in.. cause why not
7 minutes in I was laughing my ass off and stepped out.
I stone-cold murdered the darkness within me on this day.
Whatever I thought I couldn't do was washed away.
    Cheers Wim!

I know it works, I try to share my excitement with everybody, but in the same time if anybody asked me, so what is the WIM HOF method? I can´t tell. Because people were going to cold since long time ago, so the method must be the breathing, right? Sorry, I´m confused.

well its gonna be a long story! it was trial and error for a while, but after i read in depth of his training that he provides, you need to understand the mental and physical properties of it. such as mental: the breathing exercises and meditation, and physical: such as the gradual acceptance of cold weather where you start by taking cold showers and then eventually be out in the effects of the weather with less and less clothing down to your shorts! the hardest part is getting your feet used to it but it eventually feels normal

can i share with you something that you may think i am exaggerating or lying about, but ill share it anyways and would like your honest opinion about it no matter what it is.
ever since i started meditating few months back, and the first time i meditated, it was directed towards my body, like the first time i meditated, i laid down, imagined myself levitating above the bed, what happened is that my whole temperature rose a lot, my breathing was a bit heavier, my heart was pounding faster, and my body was literally being lifted out of the bed, like my legs went up, my arms went up, and my head + back went up, the only thing that was still on the bed attached was my butt, due to gravity,
but i could swear that i was not moving, my body was moving on its own, due to my imagination of being lifted ( note : it took more than 15minutes to reach that state, or to notice difference )
and as it was happening, my whole body was tingling like crazy, and i could feel the pressure in my whole body.
    that was the first time
ever since then ive been practicing it, now i can easily lift my hand in mid air for 15+ minutes, without experience physical pain on it, without it being muscularly painful or anything, and i havent tried to go more, but i tested it for 15, and when i brought my hand down, it was as if it wasnt lifted at all.
and with practice, i am now able to "not perfectly " control flew / cold sickness, its been about 1 year since i got the flew, and usually i get it every few months, 7-8 months before meditation was bcz i was taking medicines and stuff , and 3-4 months after meditating, and now, whenever i feel like i am coming down to the flew or cold,
i can meditate it, i can raise my bodies temperature through focusing on the pressure and energy throughout my body, which ultimately, its been very long since i got a headache as well, since i am meditating and practicing on removing the pain in my head as well
so overall i can relate 100% to what you are saying, can you tell me what you think ?? i am very long way from you or even being satisfied :P but i guess so far, being able to control the flew/ cold to that extent is pretty good
yesterday, i got a heavy cold symptoms ( suffocating breath, heavy chest pain, heavy coughing , heavy breathing, heavy nose drops ) all these symptoms started suddenly when i woke up from sleep, so i meditated, for about 1-2 hours, the symptoms were almost gone...
the breathing went back to normalish ( usually id have to take the inhaler , pre-meditating )
and now, i am fine, not 100% cz i am straining my body a bit with work 12 hours/ day :/ and stuff, but still :/
sorry for the long text, i just wanted to share ^_^ your video is inspiring xD

Thank you So much, Wim for ally your self-study and advancing our understanding in this realm of science. I have pretty bad COPD.... I can breath in deeply, but if I'm really out of breath, my lungs almost prevent me from letting me breathe out - it becomes very difficult to expel the CO2, and panic sets in. Very scary.......I then have to use an inhaler - I use Ventolin - then my lungs open up. I'm hoping that this Breathing Exercise can really help and perhaps diminish or reverse my COPD. - Ken in Hawaii -Jul 13, 2016

Are there any tests that you can perform at home before and after doing the breathing method to see changes, like maybe blood tests, saliva tests, or others? If you know of any please list all that are easy to perform at home.

basic method is to take deep breaths in fully expanding your lungs and shallow exhales until you get a sort of rush and push through the panic. at lesst thats what he taught Joe Rogan on his podcast.

Thank you for your help! After 1 day of following your breathing technique and cold showers, I feel more energy and have been able to hold my breath longer when I swim. In fact, they asked me to not do anymore holding my breath at the pool lol kind of a bummer but next time I get to the ocean, I want to try. I've been wondering if I possibly have endometriosis because I have always had sharp pains in my side out of nowhere, along with chest pain. The abdominal pain seems to show up after doing exercises for my core. I'm really hopeful that this will help! Haven't been to a doctor in many years due to a vaccine injury from the gardasil shot. It left me with an autoimmune disease for the longest time; I was a competitive athlete who was no longer able to compete due to intense fatigue, joint pain, hair loss, grey skin, etc. Ever since, I've been afraid to go to a doctor because so many of them now push the viper jab. I have more faith and trust with chiropractors. I would love to find a naturalpath but that's difficult as insurance never covers that. Thankful that Jesus makes all things new and has given us so much to help us! Blessings to you!

Mr. Hof, I have been experimenting with your method and am a little disappointed with what I am personally able to do. At first, I could only hold my breathe for 20 seconds, but worked up to 1:50. All of a sudden today I wasn't able to hold my breathe for more than 20 seconds and seem to have lost all my progress. Also, no matter how deeply I breathe during the 1st phase of your method, I never feel lightheaded or get the tingling feeling that you have described. I know I must be doing something wrong, but I have no idea what. Do you have any ideas?

When I surfing in winter my face never get cold anymore and I always took a little swim in underwear when surf session is over. I can keep my breath much longer than usual and keep myself practicing everyday with as much control I can, taking care of the times and trying never panic outside there, but I really feel a bit stuck now and I really would love to go to the next step, probably I will try the full course when I can get the time to it, definitely worth it, however just Thank you dude, you have giving me a lot of hope and motivation !!!
