I'm not worried about Carlos Alcaraz. He's 21 years old and won two majors this year, the French and Wimbledon. What Carlos has achieved is a Herculean feat. He's young, healthy, rich, with a good head on his shoulders, and has his whole career in front of him. The world is his oyster. The story last night wasn't about how Alcararz lost but how Botic van de Zandschulp won. We tennis fans forget about the daily grind, the striving for excellence, and the sacrifices tennis players make, and most will never win a major. The sweat. The tears. The struggles. Often penniless too. Botic van de Zandschulp, #74 in the world and bored with tennis, about to give up and retire. Botic van de Zandschulp is a tennis player the world doesn't care about but he's a complete person, beautiful and full. Whether or not this is his last hoorah or a shot of new found energy is anyone's guess but this was his night. This was his success. Botic van de Zandschulp can hold his head high. His hard work, talent, and sacrifice paid off and this match will undoubtedly be the highlight of his career. Sometimes success isn't measured in wins and trophies and ink spilt on a page. Sometimes success is heart. Congratulations to Botic van de Zandschulp, whose heart had no equal on the night of August 29th 2024. I bow.

Lot of commenters with recency bias. Carlos has kinda be doing this in the last few years. Wins big title - suffers a shock upset / injury / burnout (e.g. Rome 2023, off the top of my head) - takes it easy for a month or two - comes back and wins a smaller tournament in run up to next big one - then dominates next big one. It's happened at least 3 times in this cycle so far in his career. Don't overblow this, he dominated the whole Wimbledon field less than 2 months ago, and every top player has had a shock early round slam exit at least once in their prime. His ceiling is by farrr the highest of anyone else on the tour right now still

I think Botic played in Carlos' style and that's what bothered him most. If you're good and someone's a mirror image of you, then it can be difficult to come up with a plan to execute on the spot. Botic had few unforced errors and was going the extra mile to hit the difficult shots that others would have given up on and that can be unnerving.

Realistically, Alcaraz is not the caliber of players who were Nadal, Federer and Djikovic. He's not bad, but he doesn't have the competition that the big three had. He needs two or three young players who would be his competition and influence his further development. He deservedly wins titles, but Djikovic is at the end of his career and there are no younger quality players. Secondly, he is young, and everyone already expects the greatest achievements from him in tennis, and they create stress and burden on him, which can have a bad effect on him mentally. He is good, but there will be others better than him, and he should not burden himself with what others expect of him. He should enjoy tennis a little more, not experience it as a job. People are very idiotically blowing this loss out of proportion. Saying some foolish things like Novak took his soul after the Olympics and other kinds of nonsense.
The young lad is just fatigued and could use some time off away from this retardedly hectic schedule.
It's incredibly difficult after winning two consecutive Grand Slam titles to keep this momentum going for another two major competitions within a very short space of time.
On top of that, he is still incredibly young which means he's still not completely used to the brutality of the round the year schedule, especially in an Olympic year.
He was also under an injury cloud going into this tournament.
He will recover from this and be back as strong as ever.

There is this beast in Carlos that wants to win every game, lift every trophy, break every record. Whenever he losses, he implodes and gets depressed. I don't think the loss against Djokovic is the cause now, but the loss with Nadal on doubles. His extreme competitiveness reminds me of young Messi who wanted to dribble past everyone all the time and in result got injured quite often. Eventually Messi learned how to balance his game, mentally and phisically, and the rest is history. This is what Carlos needs to do. He is already better player than Djokovic, but Novak has that balance and that us why he was able to win the Olympic gold medal after being dismantled by Carlos in the Winbledon final.

@@civotamuaz5781 Couldn't agree with you more. Carlos certainly a remarkable player 4 slams. To say he is better than Novak, Rafa, Roger, is utter nonsense. Michael Chang won the French Open, the youngest man in history, 17 years and 109 days, but he never won another slam. Martina Hingis won Wimbledon at 15 years. 9 months and during the period , 1997.1998.1999, set records of youngest ever winner of slams. In total she won 5 grand slam titles in singles. Steffi Graf did not win a grand slam until she was 19, but went on to win 22, including a Golden Slam. My point, impossible to know what Carlos will achieve in the future, greatness is longevity which Roger, Rafa and Novak have achieved. Time alone will tell whether Carlos can achieve greatness, at the moment the big 3 are in a different league.

Watch other games especially of Alcaraz, after a few rallies he hits a hard ball away from the opponent. But he never hitted even a single ball like that to Djokovic.
