- In September 2018, four friends decided to ride their bikes across Japan without a clue of what to expect. Arigatou is the product of this adventure, a short film that takes you from Osaka to Tokyo via the infamous Mount Norikura, the highest paved road in Japan.

I keep coming back to this film as one of my favourites. The music choice is great and the footage is top notch. Fun and looks an awesome adventure. Thanks guys!
7:38 Takeshi's Castle theme spotted. Fab movie lads, can't wait to do this myself (eventually!).
Wow, guys, this is one of the finest bikepacking docs I have ever seen. Love the graphics and pictures. Love that it does not loose the spirit of being in the ride with them instead of super high end cinema productions.... Well Done!
What a great trip movie! It felt super authentic and it couldve continued for another hour! I realy enjoyed it!
Super underrated channel. Subscribed
Not your average travelog, and for that, I'm most grateful. What a trip.
Thoroughly enjoyed your adventure. Thanks for sharing.
okay, i'm officially a Restrap Fan now...
Arigato gozaimasu for making this entertaining road movie!
Brilliant look at everything cycling in Japan can encompass, inc. typhoons! Well done and thanks for filming.
If anyone is interested in a longer version of this adventure, check out the Japanese Odyssey. Those quiet mountain roads are unreal.
Thanks!
Authentic, Inspiring
Great film. Japan is definitely on my cycling to do list now.
Trip of a lifetime.
Loved this video. Great tunes too. ありがとう!
Thank you! :D
Lovely short movie guys. Very entertaining.
Glad you enjoyed it Rafael :)
Great video, great editing and some good music. And your from Leeds!!!
Great little film 👍
What a wonderful film!
Thank you!
Great achievement! Now I want to cycle in the country side without a plan in Japan to see what will hit me!
Thanks Jeff! Get it done, I'd recommend it to anyone that has the chance to.
omg that car scene, I felt it!
Astonishing movie
謝謝分享,歡迎到台灣腳踏車環島。
We'd love to come to Thailand one day and ride bikes! :D
Man, this is amazing! Great trip, greater movie
Thank you Francesco!
We want more !! Longer days in Japan !!! :D
Loved watching this little film. What an epic adventure.
I enjoyed watching this so much. Thank you.
Very cool ! Helmets?
Just found this and what a gem! Chapeau to you all! A very well paced and edited film. Look forward to seeing more. (From a guy who lives and cycles in Japan.)
I loved this and really felt the awesome group feeling. I have to find some better bros.
PS, the japenesse music was a killer
Such a great movie! Hope you make more of these. It deserves more views for sure.
Thanks Jamie! We have another "holiday" in the pipeline
Great movie, love the colors and animations! Heading to Japan in 2020, will ride Tokyo - Sapporo. Is there a gpx or route from the ride, most of al interested in Matsumoto - Kofu - Mt Fuiji route. Thanks!
I hope you have an amazing time! Here is a link to the gpx files - You will want Days 8, 9 and 10 :) drive.google.com/open?id=1gMZKGrLHCM2Nus2wOmqJxxiw4Yn3v2JL
@@Restrapltd Thanks, I'll take the Large Restrap Rando bag with me, perfect for my camera gear!
@@JeanTheRa Be sure to send us some photos - we miss these days on the bike!
Yewww! It's just too good boys!
Cheers legends.
Love the vid. Many memories of Japan and cycling; buying a standard Japanese commuter bike to get around on. Her name was "Siri" :) As for the no helmets it was very strange for me to ride without one but never felt in peril and only saw a few "racers" with them. Inspired to go back and bike tour.
Great film! Thanks for sharing the experience!
Love it. Great soundtrack!
Thanks!
Another excellent video. Thank you for sharing.
Phenomenal work! Really loved the video, and I'm super curious about japan, looks so cool to cycle those mountain roads!
wow awesome movie guys..
Absolute class! Cracking video fellas
Cheers Toby
Good stuff. I liked the music and the title of the video.
Thank you!
what i learned from being in Japan is 1. make sure you have a good roadbike/gravel bike and 2. When somebody offers you money to eat something it will hurt hahah
This film is absolutely amazing, thanks!
Awesome !! Great fun :) Thanks lads.
so good
Brilliant lads! Really enjoyed that, props from across the pennines in sunny Lancashire!

Epic journey!! This video should have a lot more views than 11k
I got a patch from you guys! cheers boys!
Awesome do you guys Gravel much I’d love to see a gravel ride/race
We have some content planned in for Gravel riding soon, be sure to subscribe to stay in the loop! ;)
This is awesome guys ...You made me jealous now... Between please provide which cycle models you used for this tour and bike accessories
looks an awesome adventure
Amazing trip! Great ride!
Found this little gem here in the depth of RUclips. Great movie, lovely landscape, nice story. But why the f*ck is no one wearing a helmet? Doesn't make sense to me...
Awesome guys (except for the lack of helmets!!!). What a great way to see Japan! Sorry you didn’t get to see Mt. Fuji.
Nice Video! But why no helmets?!
This was a personal choice - mainly to cut down on bulk while touring and also to stay cool in the warmer weather. We did check the law in Japan and riding without a helmet is legal, so we made the choice to ride without them to keep our heads cool more than anything. Again, a personal choice.
Sometimes, when I feel sage on the road, I don‘t wear a helmet either.
Fantastic film. Thanks for taking us on your journey! Could have watched hours more
Any vids on the gear you all took?
Hi, we don't unfortunately! We are currently in the process of putting together our next film from our Scottish Trip, so we'll be sure to get a bike check in for it!
Cracking vid.
Helmet.... imagine hitting that car...
I saw this comment before watching and was like come on mate, no one does a bike trip without a helmet, that would be irresponsible and stupid in such a arrogant way….yet here they are wearing caps…
@@shalaskaja452 yep.... and it was a close call....
Cool movie and adventure guys! ;)
Thank you
Great stuff!
Hi lads what a super video. Makes me glad to have bought my Restrap frame bag.
Thanks for sharing such a well edited video of your ride. What were the stats for km, elevation & number of rice balls?
Thanks for watching. In total it was 832km in distance, 9,014m in elevation and rice balls were about 6 a day amongst all sorts of other snacks.
Nice experience. Soundtrack link please!
When you stayed in the onsen hotel did you go into the onsen[hot baths]? They are one of best things about Japan!
Nice Film. Great experience. I hadn't thought though that roads in the super-rich and technological advanced Japan could be so catastrophic. I start to reconsider the "state of the roads" in Italy...
What's the track that plays at the end? Excellent video and killer soundtrack. Definitely adding stuff to spotify while watching this but can't ID that last one.
60mph. Downhill. Without helmets! Very brave.
Stupid, not brave.
That’s one way to describe it.
Hey guys, great inspiration! I will do a similar tour as soon as it is possible to visit japan again. Until then I really need the song name at 13:12 . Have been rewatching the video a million times for that bit. Any details would be welcome :)
Nice one dudes. I'm flying to Tokyo with my bike 4th September to do some 2-3 day rides. Did you use Komoot for route planning and are you using Naturehike tents by any chance?
Hey John, I hope you have a great time. We actually did this trip before we knew about Komoot so this was all done at a dining table with a combination of Strava, Google earth and "connect the dots" attitude. Naturehike tents ftw.
@@Restrapltd cheers for the reply guys. Once the typhoon has blown through Tokyo I'm off!
Nice video! Looks like you guys took a train from Osaka airport to town to start riding? Was it ok taking the train with a bike box? I am aware that the airport is quite a ways, but couldn't you just ride out of the airport? I'm planning on bringing my bike on my next trip to Japan, thank you!
That's right, we took the train to Osaka City Station from the Airport. It was easy. Looking on google we saw the only road from the airport to the mainland looked like a freeway with no cycleway, so we hauled the bike boxes onto the train. We didn't encounter any issues. You will need to do the same because apparently bikes need to be in a box or Rinko bag before they're allowed on a train.

Thanks Simon, 517 miles all together - www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1_eHa5rGdz9P7C2VwjB7xezqX52vXtpg5
Fantastic stuff but curious, why not wearing helmets?

how did you find cycling in japan compared to the uk? better views but how was the traffic and people of this wonderful country? thanks
Traffic in Japan was a mixed bag - people are courteous for the most part, the trucks and K Cars tend to give little room. Cities are crazy but countryside is totally fine.
@@Restrapltd Awesome, thanks for the reply dude ;) I was hoping to get out that way myself this year but I'll have to sit on that plan for a while. all the best
Was... was that a chocolate rain reference?

Just left him on the road? Wow
I appreciate it might seem like we just left him in the film but I'll write a bit more of a detailed synopsis of what happened. After riding past Mt Fuji, we ended up on an incredibly busy motorway type of road which we only carried on with because of the amount of road-cyclists also on it. We wanted to get off it as soon as possible so we were riding around 22mph in a line formation to clear it quickly. It was during this that Joe went off the back after a puncture while in a tunnel where we couldn't hear him shout. When we realised he was no longer with us we moved to the side of the road to wait imagining he had gotten a puncture or mechanical. After an hour we started stopping passing cyclists to ask them if they had seen anyone to match his description, absolutely none of them had. This made us think he had turned off the road. After looking at google maps for 10 minutes, we saw there were 20 turn-offs he could of taken.. all leading to different towns but then reconnecting with the road we were on, closer to our destination for the day. As he had no method of communication, we decided the best thing to do was to carry on to Hadano as he was no longer on the road we were following and he was likely waiting for us further down the route, maybe even at our destination. It was there that we contacted the police to search for him and he walked in moments later. The reason no one saw Joe who was cycling down the same road as us is because Joe thought it would be safer to climb over the road barrier and into some bushes to fix his puncture, which is where he was bitten and passed out. It was all very distressing losing our friend with no phone and waiting for him at different intervals for about 3-4 hours in total and we were just making group decisions based on what we could do. The moral of the story... always have a group meeting point, methods of communicating each other and a strong knowledge of where you are going for the day in case you end up getting separated.
@@Restrapltd Did you work out what he was bitten by?
@@NoName-ot No idea! Joe was absolutely out of it when he arrived though and slept like a baby that night.
The link to the route is broken. can anyone please share where the GPX file can be downloaded?
Hi Rome,
Sorry about that - we've updated the route file in the description. It'll now take you to our Komoot page with the route on there.
@@Restrapltd thanks :-)
Great video, but why aren't you wearing helmets?

A good film, rather tarnished by the lack of helmet use - you're in a position to set an example, no excuse not to

equipment list?
What equipment are you interested in Fabian? :)
@@Restrapltd Perhaps I should've been more specific, but I'm interested in your camping gear. Forgot the timestamp, but I saw that you guys set up a tent in a city out of everyone's way and I'm curious about which tents and sleeping bags you guys used for that climate
@@Fabian-ob2mh No worries at all! Our first night on the outskirts of Osaka was more because we originally went the wrong way (gps was set to navigate to beginning of the route which was at the airport, and we found out we had to get a train into the city in the first place). The tents we used were Naturehike Cloud up 2 and unless it was raining we only slept in the inner to keep a breeze flowing through. All our sleeping bags were different but I used a Snugpak Jungle Bag because of its built-in mosquito net and light-weight body. Also used a Sea to Summit sleeping mat. All of that and a down-jacket fit into the 14L Saddle Bag :)

Nice work! All the better for the lack of navel gazing. Did you have any sightings of the infamous Japanese hornet, they’re supposed to be fearsomely big.
Cheers!
We didn't see any Giant Hornets, but we did see some huge wasps (about the size of your thumb) regularly high up in the mountains. Pretty scary!
helmets anyone?
Japan would be the only country I would dare to ride without..
Jaap because the streets are so soft?
