Not true. Some melee players dislike hbox genuinely, but others dislike him for the same reason the sm4sh group disliked zero when he was winning non stop. I personally like hbox because he brings a higher level of thinking to melee. However melee and ultimate are very different games. When you get camped in melee, there are options; when you get camped in ultimate, that's just neutral.
Bait and punish is boring in Smash. The movement makes it way too easy to do and the mechanics make it the most rewarding option 9/10 times. It's shallow.
@@lipailong2 That depends of the character. Bowser in ultimate has funnily enough the same style, but instead of easy KOs with rest, he will rack tons of damage; he is also way more risky due to his weight, size and endlag, while melee Puff is a lot safer.
@Edwin Jiménez Aceves 1. It's pretty damn easy to bait out attacks. 2. Bait and punish isn't that far off from camping and quickly devolves into it in Elite Smash. 3. Top player isn't a skill level, it's a rank. It's based on tournament wins. If a wave of new players swept every tournament the number of top players wouldn't increase, they'd just be replaced. But I digress, top players get dumpstered by randos every other day in Smash Ultimate.
If you havent seen it, I HIGHLY recommend the video " Playing, Fast and Slow" by Core A Gaming. It's very similar to this and goes in depth behind the psychology of patient and impatient play in fighting games.
Totally agree! I wrote the script for this vid (before Playing Fast and Slow came out lol) and several others on the channel and Core-A is a major inspiration. One of the absolute best FGC channels out there.
I tried convincing my aggressive Falcon main to start playing more patiently. Nevertheless, he persisted. It took me bullying him with Link, Lucina, and playing a patient Falcon in order to convive him to start working on a patient character.
Shadowing boxing in training. Ridiculously good advice 👌. It's what I do. Especially when you need an Ike main to win against a pichu. Better get the spacing right. Lol
first thing I think about when I think about Smash Ultimate is the fgc nod. You lose an interaction, get mixed, or your opponent reads you and there’s just this nod that you do- acknowledging that they were a step ahead and accepting that you need to be more conscientious about that situation if it arises again. That’s the first thing I think about, physically doing the nod and that feeling that goes along with it
@@davis1228 the problem with using melee as an ex is that the archetypes and meta are mostly due to more than half the roster being unviable. The decision making has more options "gameplay wise" than other games and a lot of flexibility in how you play because of it. And ppmd and armada are patient players who dominated the scene. M2k too. Its just on the surface its all just rushdown, but the layers in your choices due to movement can be varied and can add to different styles and lots of different neutral interactions. Melee has at least x2 more options than other games with how things are approached. Even shielding you have 2 types of shields and then you have the option to wavedash/waveland oos as a bonus in multiple directions. But I would say in every fighter usuallu patient players are top 3. Even in air dash ones. Tekken 7 has nerfed movement and is too focused now on power creeps and less on neutral than other games and sfv is more on mix ups and oki than neutral like in sf4/sf3. But you have games like samurai shodown, mk11 being more neutral focused, granblue, and some other recent games. Guilty gear is more nuetral based now. Neutral based games are there in big numbers now because those games are also easier on casual players (the big money makers). The direction of both tekken and sf is pretty sad atm.
Spiked Blueshell a really quick answer to your question is actually both yes and no. I come from the mortal kombat scene, and we recently had a game designed JUST like kinda what youre looking for. It was called mkx, and it was an amazingly fun and fast paced game. Watching competitive play was hype for fans as well as for competitors. We all loved the game when it was around because there was always some crazy thing about to happen. The problem is that the only way to design a fighting game to make it unpredictable and hype like that constantly is to make it very tough and unbalanced for competitors. We loved mkx as competitors because it is what we had, but now that we have moved on to another game, we realized just how much the mechanics in mkx were designed to essentially be a game of rock paper scissors instead of what fighting games are supposed to be. So to answer your question, it can be bad game design for the people competing in the game, but it can also be very well made game design for the people watching the game and wanting to see hype moments
@@davis1228 Lol.. Another idiot crying about modern fighting games. Please show me evidence that people's attention spans are less than they used to be, or more people have ADHD. The fuck?
2:32. Well, if you've ever done martial arts competitively, or at least sparring, knowing when to back off is important in a similar way. Picking your spots, baiting your opponent, and countering effectively are part of real fighting too. So using the term "fighting game" isn't necessarily wrong
I think the best example I can think of was watching a competitive match it was link vs. Ganon. Link was always trailing behind Ganon , and link needed up winning cause he had patience
Supsip No. it means be aggressive when you need to, not all the time. Wait for someone to make a mistake or run away then when they attack go for a punish and maybe a techchase.
Depends on who you are fighting. Opponents like lil Mac I’d agree. For projectile base characters like Link and Snake I’d say rush them to prevent them from spamming.
this is why you throw patience out the window with little mac. With how few options you have compared to your opponent, its best to barrage your opponent with so they dont have time to figure out which move they should counter with. Many macs rely solely on c stick tho xd
When I play as Byleth against a very good Joker player, I loose all my patients. They can just weave in and out around every single option I throw out and hard punish me. And if I approach slower, they just dash grab. I give up and switch to Samus, who can bomb camp.
Drakenstar78 Legend that’s the whole thing, he whines if i ever wait for him. and he plays fucking snake so he’s not gonna approach me but gets mad when i don’t approach him

"Your best matchup won't look like a 64 combo contest" so what DOES look like a 64 combo contest and why do the higher level players' gameplay look like it?
Every Fighting Game is about patience at the end of the day. For those adrenaline junkies that hate Hungrybox, they clearly lack it. Hype comes from one player figuring out another and where true masters of patience partake in their elegant dance. Real life fights are like this too. Everything about fighting isn't just a hype montage, but a battle of wits and quick thinking. You need to play smart in order to dominate the competition and if you want to be the fastest. . .just take a moment to smell the flowers.
Any good Little Mac player has mastered this mentality since our whole meta when playing online is dealing with platform camping (which is the stupidest thing yeah I can’t punish you to hard for it but your not doing to much to me either for 99% of the roster) or playing a bullet hell with projectile campers
