    Thank you so much for putting this video on overhead consoles. I have an 09 Crown Vic P71 and I want to install a console that came out of a Crown Vic LX Sport, ( or the Mercury Marauder). Your video showed me exactly how to do it, PLUS, what wire harness to use with part number and I now can install the lit mirrors sun-visors. I work for Ford so this is cake with ice cream on top. You have made me a subscriber. Thanks again. :-) P.S. I'm sorry you had to part from your 06 Grand Marquis GS. I hope you get that Town Car you want. Merry Christmas and Happy New years to you and family.

    Hello Mr. Carter,
    It's a New Year and my update on my project. I bought the small overhead console,( like the one in your video), along with the bracket and complete wiring harness from eBay for about $100.00 with free shipping. The console looks almost new, just a few minor scratches. I dropped the headliner down enough to get the bracket ready for installation. I removed the stock little brackets plus the spring clips. The small keepers on the console bracket were broken and wouldn't hold the spring clips in place. I could have glued the clips in place but was afraid it wouldn't hold so I did the next best thing. I pop riveted the clips on and that did the trick.
    I popped the bracket in place and it look good. For extra support, I install two small self tapping screws, (one on each side), two inches aft from the clips into the front rib roof support. The tail end of the bracket, I applied some "3M" chocking strips between the tail end and the roof, again, did the trick.
    I routed the wiring harness in place and re position the headliner back in place. I loosely installed the sun-visors in place to keep it at bay. I made a cardboard cutout of the bracket and aligned the holes of the pattern to the holes of the sun visor mount hooks, trace the slots of the pattern to the headliner. I ever so carefully cut the headliner out within the square I drew and soon the bracket popped through. I tighten up the sun-visors, plugged in the harness, popped on the console and it looks GREAT, like it was installed at the factory.
    I did the wire mod like you explained, plugged it in and we now have lights, close the door, they go off, open the door again, Light Show. I'm so happy with the results. The compass part of the console is non operational, (P-71's doesn't' have the wiring). If there's a video on how to add a compass module, I'm there, in the meantime, the console is Awesome. I'm sorry for the long story, I wanted you to see the pictures in your head since I couldn't send them to you. Thanks again for all your help.

    I am so glad I found you, I just got the console , later after seeing your video I went back and got the wires from a local Yard! I was kind of frustrated not knowing what to do to make the console work as it should. NOW my question is HOW can I safely detach the roof liner so I can run the wire harness , without Damaging it? THANK you so much for advice!

      Yes, I was thinking about that, there is no need to remove the whole thing! I will be working on it soon, and ill be watching your video many times, specially the part that mention how to make all the lights work, the console and the center reading lights. Thank you again!!!!!!!. Maybe another video could be how to swap the bumpers on the 03-04 MGM's for the Marauder's! Cheers!!

    Lovely video! I wanted to do just that to my 04 MGM, so i did it, got the console, with the wire, the plastic retainer, And the new shorter visors. Well when i hooked up the donor wire to the place you indicate the connectors were different, i realized that the donors harness could be modified to fit into my car connection, and it did! I thought that i had done it! Well... no.. when i push the lamp buttons on the console the reverse lights come on! And since i have a cam in the back it also comes on!! Lol. So.... is there something you could advise me ? All i want is the console's reading lights to come on AND off . Thank you.. very much

    I bought an entire wire harness, overhead console, mirror, and visors out of a 2004, 05, or 06 Grand Marquis. I went to install tonight and found the grey electrical clip on the back of the car to be a different size than the stock clip on my 07 Grand Mar GS. The donor harness has a smaller more narrow gray plug in clip than the one on my 2007 GM. Any ideas how to remedy?

    This was a helpful video. Thanks for sharing. I just purchased a 2011 Ultimate Edition, and like you said, it's kinda stripped down. I have the auto-dimming mirror, so does that mean I might have the wiring with the other connectors for the overhead consoles, or do you know if they were removed in those last few years? Also, you mentioned a bracket that the consoles clip into; does that mount to the roof, or just slid on top of the headliner?

    • @TheCarterHour
      @TheCarterHour  3 года назад

      @@iNd5ky The Lincoln Town Car overhead is not compatible. Its because it uses can bus to operate. You can use any console from a Grand Marquis, Crown Victoria, or Mercury Marauder. They all use the same harness. You should also get the sun visors because they are shorter from the donor car too. They will have the lighted mirrors in the visors and the harness will have the wiring for that too.

    Glad to find this video. I got an 04 GS a few weeks ago and have been looking for some things here and there to do to it and out of curiosity was wondering if it was possible to put an LS overhead console in it. It's probably not something I have to do but if I can ever get a good deal on one in a junkyard I might try it. I noticed you have a double din radio in yours and I've been figuring out how to do the same to mine. I have a Pioneer AVH 3300bt double din from my last car I want to put into mine but a few things have been throwing me off. Being an 04 I have the space to fit one in the dash but my car has the factory premium radio (which is really nice except I can't control my iPod through it and have to use the cassette adapter) but I noticed mine has 3 plugs, one for speakers and power, one for a sub, and one called "aux" which I guess would go to the CD changer. My car didn't come with a sub or CD changer so I'm not sure why I have those plugs but I assume that means there is already wiring somewhere in the trunk to hook a sub or CD changer up to that radio. I did find adapters for those two plugs since the dash kit only comes with the main harness. I think the best looking dash kit is the one that has the two black tabs that stick out on both sides of the radio but I don't exactly understand how it will fit in there as it looks like both sides of the dash are completely smooth and if I have to shave out the tabs for the factory radio I don't know how well it would lock in. I've seen other people glue their's in but I really don't want to do that in case the radio would ever need replaced or I'd sell the car and put the factory radio back in without having to tear the dash out and put another one in. I would appreciate it it you could tell me how you were able to install yours, thanks.

    • @TheCarterHour
      @TheCarterHour  8 лет назад

      Well first off welcome, you actually got a great year for the MGM. Most 03 through 04 MGM's came pre-wired for a lot of the features of the LS and luxury features that in other years the wiring was not there. To help you with your radio question, the three plugs that you stated are standard for these two years. Yes one is the sub, and you can find the other side of this wiring behind the backseat on the drivers side. However the ground is disconnected. You might even have the CD Changer wiring. I didn't have this in my old 2003 MGM, and my 2006 MGM came with the rare audiophile system standard and had an in dash 6 disc CD changer. You can install a double din radio as I did in my 2006, but you have to trim out some of the plastic around the hole and use the adapter to install. After you trim and put the radio in there its usually permanent, meaning that the factory radio is not going back in. It just takes some time to do it right and I would advise to take your time with it, because there is not a lot of room behind the radio and with new radios and the excessive amount of wires you really have to route them good. I used the Metra double din install bracket and wiring kit. I got them both from Best Buy. It will definitely take some patients to install a double din radio but it can be done with success. I wished I would have taken a video of the install but it took me a day or so to get it right.

      Thank you for the reply. I've been looking up info on my car and it turns out it was called the GS Convenience package that included leather seats, special badges, an aluminum Grand Marquis nameplate on the rocker panel trim, and a two tone paint job. I have a set of 6x9s from my last car so when I get around to installing them I'll check for the sub wire. I looked up the rear speaker removal and it's pretty straight forward even though the rear seats have to come out. The speaker wire adapters are very cheap but I noticed people are saying the polarity is backwards on the adapters and the wires need cut, swapped, and spliced back together so I'm not sure if they are all like that or just the ones I found on Amazon. Luckily my radio measured an inch or so shorter in depth than the factory radio but I didn't try test fitting it because I didn't want to shave out those tabs until I have the kit to put the Pioneer in. I believe the kit I'm looking at on Amazon is the same as the Metra but is just sold by a different seller and it includes the harness for the power/speakers. It looks the same as the ones I see on other people's that have a double din installed. I assume that I could just leave those other two plugs tucked away in the back then because I'm not worried about adding a sub right now and if I did I guess if I don't glue the radio in it will still come back out and I can buy the harness to use that sub wire with my radio and I'll probably never need the other harness because I don't think I have any need for adding a CD changer.

    • @TheCarterHour
      @TheCarterHour  8 лет назад

      Yes, the convenience package is a great package to have. Thats what my 2003 GS had as well. Full size spare to boot. However I didn't have the two tone paint, or leather. The 6x9's should fit. For some reason ford went with a 6x8. Pioneer makes specific speakers for ford cars in the 6x8 size. Weird, don't know why they have that size. Yep, the removal of the seats are not bad. I have done this a few times in both the 2003 and 2006, very easy. Thats interesting that you say the polarity is backwards, I never knew that, and found I don't feel the speakers are really performing the way they should. Thanks for that mention, because I felt that polarity wasn't right. This was the radio bracket i used www.amazon.com/Metra-95-5817-Installation-1995-2008-Vehicles/dp/B0024L8I02 . I used this wiring harness for the radio www.amazon.com/Metra-70-5521-Radio-Wiring-Harness/dp/compatibility-chart/B000K50GTA . I believe there is a wiring harness to connect to the sub connector in the back of the trunk, however I made my own when I had the 2003. I would probably just hook up the sub at the radio and when ready activate on the radio and hook it up in the trunk easy peasy. I believe I didn't use the 16 pin harness and tucked it away. I used just the 24 pin and the 8 pin. No worries, glad I could at least give you some info. Please keep in touch and let me know how your project went.

    • @Mr.Everything
      @Mr.Everything 8 лет назад +1

      Mine doesn't have a full size spare (which really isn't anything worth complaing about) but I noticed the jack doesn't fit inside the wheel like it appears to in the diagram paper and there isn't a way to store in the side of the trunk like it also shows. I believe I read somewhere that pre 98 cars had a bracket that you could mount the jack on the right side of the trunk where the was a bulge in the carpet to accommodate it which I think they got rid of in later years but was still in there for 2004 even though they quit including the bracket and tell you to pin it behind the spare tire. The dash kit I'm looking at looks to be the same but it's by Harmony Audio and includes the wire harness. I read the rear speakers either use an adapter plate or a full 6x9 which I think mine has so my 6x9s should work and I'll have to buy 6x8s for the doors. I read people said you can also remove the pins in those speaker wire adapters if you have the tool to do it or cut and switch the wires. Someone mentioned if you buy them from Cruthchfield they're the same with the wires incorrect but they swap the pins around to fix it so I assume all of them made must be done backwards. I also read you can just cut the plug off of the factory speakers (which pretty much ruins them) and then solder your new speaker wires onto the metal tabs which would be another way to do it. Aside from any audio stuff I'd just like to add some chrome stripping on like fender trim, the outside window pillars, and they even make chrome inserts for the two cutouts in the lower portion of the rear bumper. Mechanically all the car really needs is the front shocks replaced so after I get that done I'll hopefully be able to add on things as long as it doesn't need anything else fixed on it.

    • @TheCarterHour
      @TheCarterHour  8 лет назад +1

      My Pops 2008 has a small spare and I managed to get the jack in the middle of it. I am wondering if you have the right spare? Usually on the Convenience package I believe that you are suppose to have a full size spare, but not sure on the 2004. I would check further to make sure you have the right spare, so if you need it on the road, there are no surprises. I believed that they stored the jack in the early 90's MGM, and have used that same trunk carpeting cover for years, so I believe you are spot on when they used to have the jack there. I have to say a big thank you to you for saying there was an issue with the Metra speaker adapter harnesses, they are infact reverse polarity. I went back and changed them all had to cut two and was able to repin two of them. My speakers sound so much better now. I think Metra has made this same mistake on many more speaker adapter harnesses, becuase my 2012 Impala used them and it never sounded right. Much appreciated on that. I believe they sell those chrome kits for MGM/CV. They look really nice. If you are planning to do the front shocks they are a PITA. I did them on my 2003. You will have to deal with the front springs as well. But other than that, these cars are great, and cheap/easy to fix. It is a true road warrior. I have owned 4 so far, and 3 were great.

      Well you should have looked at the c-piller before you took on the project right? Not that hard to do. Blaming everyone else for your mistake is not taken very kindly in the world. Most P71, Crown Vic Base, Grand Marquis GS came with this plug. But first things first are you meaning the plug that you have in your car is different than the one on the harness, or are you talking about the wire count. Because the wire count will be significantly less than the optioned plug. Another thing you can do is buy the down harness and that should provide you with what you need. I will look up your car tomorrow via ALL DATA and see what plug you are talking about and see if there is a swap harness for it. Stay tuned.
