This is the only horror movie that actually scared the sh*T out of me. I watched it late at night - all by myself - the night before my parents were about to go away on a trip for a week. What a bad idea that was. I was alone in a big house for the first time since my grandma had passed and for some reason this movie did something to me that no other movie ever really did. It completely unnerved me. I was so freaked out and I didn’t know why. Every night I would come home from work to an empty house and, before I could go to bed, I had to walk room to room with a knife in my hand to check every closet and every corner to make sure I was completely alone in the house. I even checked the now empty apartment over the garage where my grandma used to live. The idea that a whole part of the house was just empty like that really freaked me out. I was always super freaked out going up there. There are several reasons why this movie freaked me out: the setting (people being in places where something really horrible once happened without knowing about that awful thing - really freaks me out), the religious symbolism (raised catholic), the gore, the strange lighting, and there was something about the people in hell having their eyes torn out that really freaked me out. I was so scared of this movie for so long. It gave me such a terrible feeling. I’ve watched it several times since - both with other people and alone - and I love it now. But that initial feeling that I got from this movie was really rough. I had nightmares. No movie has ever had a similar effect on me and I watch a lot of horror.

good review, side note: in "the haunting" the person 'haunting' the house is actually eleanor herself. she is actually controlling what is happening because it is indicated early in the movie she caused poltergeist activity as a girl. this is why markway's wife gets lost in the house near the end, because eleanor is jealous of her.

    I just LOVE this movie.
I'm French and saw it in London during a trip.
Later on, as it was going to be (unceremoniously) release in France, the movie livers association I was in, in my University, made previews of the film. So I made sure all my friends could come. They ALL still remember the preview and live the film.
You forgot to mention that Soldier is an unofficial sequel to Blade Runner.
About the lost scenes it was probably some Paramount executives who chose to "lost" them to be sure they wouldn't be blamed later on if a director's cut proved to be better and, therefore, that they were wrong to cut it down.
The same kind who told that the Snyder Cut never existed, or told the director of the 1998 adaptation of the English series Avengers, when he asked for the cut footage to edit the director's cut he was promised by WB for its home release "everything that was shot is on the screen"... To the freaking DIRECTOR who KNEW what he was forced to cut... despite half of the trailers being scenes not in the film ! 🙄😤

One of the most awesome science fiction movies I have seen. The action, the horror, the special fx, the storyline, the acting: it all just flows together in one hell of a ride, literally. That other movie from Paul Anderson ‘Soldier’ suck.ed big-time though. Hope they find the missing scenes so I can view Anderson’s true vision. I’ll definitely be looking out for that TV series from WB/Amazon.

You know, it's funny. I have a love/hate relationship with this kind of media. Doom video games? Love. Hellraiser movies? Hate. Nightmare On Elm Street? Love. Friday The Thirteenth? Hate. I walked out of Idle Hands in the theater. Back and forth. I'm not sure why. But Event Horizon was special. It somehow rode that love/hate line just right, keeping me constantly uncomfortable and watching through between my fingers. It was awful! It was amazing! I hated it and loved it simultaneously. No other movie has abused me so horribly yet kept me just fascinated enough to keep asking for more. I both hope and fear the lost scenes get found some day or get reconstructed with digital remastering. A director's cut would be epic.

The most terrifying horror movie for me personally. The first movie I can remember where the good guys don't actually win. Sure they escape in the end but they do so with the knowledge that nothing they do in life can save them from the hell that awaits. Nihilistic yes, but also horrifying.

If I recall, the assistant commander, Stark, was still traumatized when she woke up after the rescue team's arrival, even though she was practically the only one nothing had really happened to (compared to the rest of the crew). So I just imagine her as being like Jaws the Revenge's Ellen Brody, constantly sensing and mentally linked to the presence of evils from the other side. And, for that matter, like Ripley at the start of Aliens.

One thing that stood out when I saw it, was the ending.. Maybe I remember it wrong but I thought that Starck, the female survivor, had not seen S.Neil´s transformation to «cut up, without the eyes» earlier in the movie. My take isn't that the ship went to hell or any place that's literally malevolent. I think they went to a place where reality simply isn't the same, where they actual laws of physics are toxic to what we consider normal life and even the ordered nature of existence.
There's no deacons on the other side, just a world that exists in its own natural state.
The issue arose when this ship and crew from one universe entered a universe that wasn't compatible with them, the new universe corrupted the ship and crew causing all of them to break down in terms of what's expected on our side. We see this indicated by the new crews hallucinations, these are not agents from another dimension, they are manifestations of the people as the corruption slowly alters how their very minds work.
And our crew is only exposed to this effect second hand, it looks like the original crew suffered more extreme effects almost instantly upon arriving in a universe where entropy logic cause and effect or any number of other constants we are accustomed to simply don't work the same.
I dont think there's much of a story there for the original crew.

True story time. When I saw this opening night with my buddy we were watching and my buddy's cellphone went off in his pants in vibration only mode and it was right when Dr. Wier was in the green tunnels trying to fix the circuit board and his dead wife shows up. Then we had Sphere a year later which tried to do a similar thing and failed. I am going to watch this again now with the knowledge of film study I have obtained over the years and see if it still feels the same as it did back then. Also, I picked up at the time that what happened to original crew of the ship is theoretically what could happen if we were able to create a wormhole in space. Up becomes down, inside becomes outside, basically Hell and just add a supernatural element to it. Will always be one of my favourite horror films.

I once watched The Black Hole and Event Horizon back to back. They tell such similar stories, yet are wildly different movies!
I got to see Event Horizon in the theater, and while it gets weak toward the end when Sam Neil goes full-on slasher, the film as a whole is solid and memorable. I particularly loved Laurence Fishburne's character. He's extremely competent, courageous, devoted to his crew, makes all the right decisions, and ends up more screwed than any character I've ever seen in any movie. Also, his instructions to the crewman who's about to get blown into space without a pressure suit are spot on, and the scene is the most accurate depiction of what decompression does to a human body I've ever seen in cinema.
Finally, I play Elite Dangerous, an amazing space MMO. I built a rescue ship in the game and named her Lewis and Clark, and regularly come across fleet carriers (giant ships owned by players) named Event Horizon.

One of my personal "Holy Crap!" moments in revisiting films from my childhood was the realization that The Black Hole isn't really the scifi movie I always thought it was. But rather a horror movie set in space. All the tropes are there. The score is moody and ominous. The set design either dark and foreboding or hellish and chaotic. The Cygnus is a forgotten Gothic castle or cathedral. Rheinhart is the mad scientist pushing the boundaries of human knowledge to places it has never been, having the monomaniacal drive of Dr. Frankenstein and the hypnotic, theatrical baring of Count Dracula. Maximillian is his brooding monster who looks like the unholy mechanical combination of a gorilla and a spider (and might be the one actually in charge.) The crew are zombies. The sentry robots are animated skeletons. Old B.O.B is that hunchback living in the basement who tries to warn those pesky kids to get back in their van and get out of there before something bad happens to them. The effects are a little wobbly in places but do an excellent job communicating the scale and impact of the various set pieces. And while it isn't without its share of action scenes, laser gun fights, and cute robots, the film never loses its sinister and by the end desperate undertones as the crew of the Palomino tries to escape being dragged to figurative Hell by Rheinhart's insane obsession.
Definitely worth a watch. Especially if you enjoyed Event Horizon.

It wasn't until I was in my early 20s I finally got it on DVD and watched it. I think it's easily one of the best horror sci-fi films ever. When I first saw this movie it was disturbing AF, but like you said it's memorable and distinct. The horrific imagery, the concepts, the characters and the story are all memorable.
Most movies these days are forgotten quickly, but this one sticks in the mind and makes you reflect on its themes and concepts long after you watch it. That speaks well of Event Horizon, and so far I've watched it 3 times.

The Event Horizon definitely took a trip to a nightmare reality and brought some of it back.

As a 40k fan, when I first saw this film it’s whole theme of travelling through a hellish dimension reminded me of the game. Now I know why!
    Thanks for this fact Minty!

I enjoyed Event Horizon, it's well written and I love the cast. One thing I noticed this movie was based on Ancient Documents where Ancient Cultures of old had actually opened these Gateways.
    These are called: Stargates.

I remember going to see this movie twice in theaters! That's a rarity for me. I remember it being out for only like 3 weeks in my theater, and that was a sure sign it was a flop, but I didn't understand why. It fit right in with my love of Hellraiser and Predator and body horror films. It's still one of my all time favorite movies and I wish I had the DVD for it!
And while you mentioned that Sam Neill had Jurassic Park fame going for him, it was him in In the Mouth of Madness that sold me on watching this film!

Same here! Pretty much never see movies a 2nd time at a theater. I went to see it with some friends on release, not knowing anything about it, we came out physically shaking from what we just experienced. I knew this had moved the bar for horror, and dragged another friend to the cinema to watch it 1 week later, and it was already in one of the much smaller screems and there were hardly any people in the theatre.
Having discovered how much it underperformed financially, I'm proud to have contributed twice as much as usual to the box office release.

I wish I had seen this in theater. Sadly saw it on VHS the first time . . . Still amazing, but getting it on Bluray was a dream (or at least a very pretty nightmare).

Too bad about the missing and damaged deleted scenes, I'd really like to see this the way it was intended. I really don't like super graphic blood baths, but the Hell scenes are the bottom line to the story. I like using my imagination for many things, but this is one movie I'd really like to know the ultimate fate of both crews in very visual ways. You know what I mean.

I got a hold of the copy where they show a one second image of what I can only describe as a blood orgy on the bridge of the ship and boy was it fucked up. It was like an S&M bondage snuff film of sorts. And Minty when you say you watch this movie and you can't forget about it, after seeing that, I still have it burned in my brain, completely devastating, but man, it was a good movie.
*Oh yeah I forgot to mention it was the director's cut. I don't know how I got a hold of it but I never seen it again. You know you let someone borrow it and you never get it back. I even look for it in the stores, but could never find it.*

Both Event Horizon and Soldier were excellent films. I still regularly watch both. Both are criminally under-rated for such a long time and are, only now, gaining the recognition they rightly deserve.

if there was ever a movie that deserves a directors cut, it would be Event Horizon. I think that with todays technology the "unusable" footage could become usable and that the poor quality of the footage would actually add to the creepy factor. Someone get a message to Anderson and tell him I would buy a copy of his directors cut.

It’s not just the quality of the original cut but the content itself. Supposedly the scene where we see the original crew mutilating themselves goes on longer and shows the true horror of what they were doing. Tearing each other’s intestines out and raping mutilated people who weren’t dead yet was apparently in the cut scene and was deemed too much for any American rating system.
