While i was listening and having a snack, i was thinking if garage bands or hobby musicians even are aware or know about these products.. I never saw a review of these with music instruments.. if you want review ideas.. I am happy tascam came, because the more there are, hopefuly better and more choices we have as well. Nice one!
It would be great to see one come out with all of these features but also line level inputs and some music-specific features. I wonder if that’ll ever happen…
I found the Tascam retailing for $312 new and the RCP 2 is in the $500-600. Just based on price alone the Tascam seems the better choice while still giving the same Tascam quality we've come to expect over the yearrs. Even the Rode RCP Duo is wildly over priced for the limited features for smaller form and function. Great review BTW.
the reason im here! I was looking into zoom Podtrak P4 because I'm on a tight budget but im glad I found the tascam before I pulled the trigger on the zoom. 300 bucks is a much better pill to swallow than 600 for the Rode Stuff.
It's also kind of insane how much Zoom still wants for the P8. Lesser recording quality, less features overall, even though it's easier to use and has portability. Not worth $5-600 though. Tascam might be phasing out the Mixcast 4, but currently still has all the features most people need at $1-200 less than even the Rodecaster Duo.
Rode needs to release a 1 or 2 channel version. Surprised they haven't already, especially with the pandemic making in-person recording almost impossible. I'm a HUGE TASCAM fan. I guess I have been for a long time. One thing TASCAM has over most manufacturers is they have been makinging all-in-one recording boxes for decades. They kind of invented them with the Portastudios. They still sell the DP24 and DP32, which are specifically made for "outside-the-box" music recording. Then they have the Model mixer series, which also allows you to record onboard as well as us it as an interface. They are less consumer friendly and take some knowledge of mixers to make them work, but are super powerful tools. I've had the Rodecaster and sold it. It was a little too much of a one trick pony for me. It does the trick very well, but I needed more than just a podcast/livestream front end. The Tascam doesn't give me that either. At the moment I'm using the Model 12 and it's an incredibly versatile tool for the hybrid broadcast, music production studio.
I would like to see a 12 channel version. More stereo inputs and outputs. A next step from Tascam Mixcast 4 and Rodecaster Pro is Behringer X32 Compact which is very powerfull but too complex.
I have a tascam multitracker cassette recorder I have used since 1988. I also have a tascam dp24sd. Look that up it’s amazing and I only wish it had a built in interface. Having said that, I have a rodecaster pro for my podcast and streaming interface it can’t be beat.
Not so. The various X32 models are easily multifunctional for live stage, monitor mixing, studio recording, etc ,although the X32 Compact and X32 Producer models in the line which lend themselves more readily to additional uses beyond live use, by virtue of their smaller footprint
The Rodecaster literally made my channel what it is and made it possible for me to have my dream job of doing this full time, so it’ll always have a super special place in me heart 😭
As Always Tom, watching your videos is GOLD!. I've had my Rodecaster since October 2019.... and I never knew about a long press hold down of the Record button makes it pause (and turn Orange). This is going to make a real difference to me in a range of situations where I don't wish to create two files for a recording that I previously needed to do a full stop of because I wasn't aware of the Pause function. I can't believe I didn't know this, thanks dude! You're a gem!
Thanks Stephen! Don't feel too bad, the RCP actually didn't have that feature when it was first released, but it popped up in the first major firmware update. 👍
Firmware 1.20 fixed several of your complaints including the broadcast meters, shortcuts (1 tap) to mic setting, and global voice effects. Unfortunately, the MixCast still breaks your files into 4GB chunks though which I've found to be super annoying. Excellent video Tom!
It did! Unfortunately I hated and battled with the installation process so much that I just left it out of the video. I haven’t heard of too many people having that problem, but it would’ve been a 15 minute tangent 😁
As a Rodecaster Pro user I’ll admit the Mixcast 4 has a few features I envy. However, it’s the RCP for me with its mic preamps, master compressor and overall sound quality. 🎙😇🙏🏾
“Mic who?” “Mic check 1,2” Beeeeepppp! Tom: “Oops!” 😂😂😂😂 Man, Tom, you never fail to bring the laughs while thoroughly reviewing a product. Thank you for always bringing your A game. Thanks to you, I purchased the Rodecaster Pro because of how passionate you are about it. As a narrator, it has totally changed my voiceovers! Keep up the great work. Looking forward to many more of your videos!
HHH, great. Tascam has sent me the mixcast4 to test, I'm a zoom P8 user already...so ...your video really has set up a high level in reviewing...I appreciate that. Since I don't have the Rode Caster Pro...after using the mixcast4 for a few weeks...It actually beat down the Zoom P8 to the ground....
7:42 - Yes you can. Please upgrade with the latest firmware. You'll be able to see the numbers on the screen. Many new features and other "missing" features from the initial introduction of the unit were added in January 2022. Great video until 7:42, when I realized that you're presenting and comparing the Tascam with its initial firmware, and you're missing many upgrades.
Good on you for making the point about manufacturing practices behind products. Tech RUclips can sometimes ignore the companies behind the tech. More than ever that stuff matters.
I'm surprised you just skipped straight over the automix feature. An automixer doesn't just automatically ride your faders so that all signals are roughly the same level. In fact it's almost the opposite. It lowers faders on inactive channels so you get less room noise, and no breathing or shuffling from people who aren't speaking. It's a highly sought-after feature that Rode has neglected!
Excellent video, thank you for making the review. As a long time user of Tascam products - started with the 244 4 track cassette portastudio in early 80's, great to see them expand into the podcast area also. Both the rode and tascam are good products by the looks of it.
The Mixcast 4 looks like some great hardware, but I don't regret picking up a Rodecaster Pro after watching this comparison and walk through. Thanks for putting out the original review for the RCP which led me to picking it up. It's really helpful for seeing comparisons to the RCP.
Hi Tom, have you tested the interface at outdoor events with noise reduction? I don’t know if it’s better the tascam or the roadcaster or Zoom Postrack p8. Maybe you have an opinion to share with us. Thankssss
Looks like a great piece of equipment. I just love my RCP too much. Honestly, I think the RCP brings me more joy than any other tech I have bought in a very long time!
I chosed Mixcast4 mostly for it's soundpads' name visibility, so I can load several theme songs for a live show and hit them for background with no mistake. For this reason I have to skip RCP and ZOOM. But Mixcast4 still has some flaws, it got hung up freezing one time(signals stopped, power button didn't work unless pull out the cord), after 1.20 update I've baked it 7 days and I think it get fixed. Another issue is, headphones still have volume bleed even you turn the knob to "min". I like RODE and ZOOM too, thanks to them for helping this new media era by keep making great products. And thanks to you Tom, for keep introducing great contents and knowledge to us!
You know what, that is a really cool thing that I didn't even realize until seeing this. It is nice to be able to see the names of the pads at all times on the home screen.
@@tombuck Yeah, its helpful especially for a music promotion radio. But transfer music to pad you'll need to convert it to wav first, that's bit annoying.
MAN!! If RCP did a firmware update with the goofy voice pitches, that would be AWESOME!! Think you should have paused for a longer effect after the voice pitch. Knock Knock and Isaac Hayes!!! I had to stop the video just to get out my laughter. LOL 😂 Thanks again Tom for an awesome review.
The Rodecaster's USB power adaptor works on the Tascam Mixcast 4. I use it and it works. This review would be even better if you reviewed the latest firmware. That would be fairer. This machine is better than the Rodecaster IMO, that's why I sold my Rodecaster to get this.
You'll see a note in my pinned comment- I had a terrible time updating firmware on mine. I'm sure it was user error because I haven't heard of anyone having this issue, but it was an absolute nightmare compared to Rode's one-click method, so I just left it out. I spent two hours fighting with this thing and then called it quits.
Great review I like this. I hope the Rodecaster Pro 2 can have many of the features like a quarter inch jack for the mic added. Thanks for taking the time to create this review.
Tom thank you for this review running a sound blaster k3+ and the tascam or rosewater pro2 would be a perfect upgrade excited for the future of my recordings 🎙🎤
In Podcastage's video, at 14 minutes, he shows how you can turn on the decibel numbers for the screen. That might have been added in a later firmware. His unit did use firmware 1.21 0137.
In the _Audio Settings_ there is an option called _Line Level Output._ I wonder if this is so you can send the monitor out sound to another preamp instead of powered studio monitors, so that preamp adjusts the volume instead of the Mixcast 4 (if that explanation makes sense).
Hey Tom, I think you forgot to mention that ground loop issue at the Rodecaster, which is not preset to the Tascam. If I could reconsider the decision between Rodecaster and Tascam (even though I own the Rodecaster), I would probably buy Tascam over Rodecaster, only because of the ground loop issue with the monitor headphones.
@@tombuck, ah, I see. This issue only shows up when you connect another grid-powered audio device to the Rodecaster. For example, a PC instead of the smartphone into the TRRS jack, or a grid pored camera (powered with an adapter instead of the battery), to one of the headphone jacks... However, for me, this is the only issue with the Rodecaster so far. It is annoying, but only in the scenarios I mentioned. I found a workaround by using a ground loop isolator from Amazon, but then I lose a lot in the audio quality because that ground loop isolator is cheap stuff. But other than that, great video Tom! I enjoy watching your channel! 👍
Someone at Fethead needs to update the user manual about inserting their inline mic preamps directly into the device, and make it clear that it needs to be connected into the mic or as close to it as possible.
Fantastic review and video as always! Thank you for all of your hard work. Did you notice a difference in the headphone outs compared to the RodeCaster? The noisy headphone outs are my biggest complaint with the RodeCaster Pro.
Just picked up the Tascam for $399…I felt like it was a much better value being that its $300 less the the RCP2. Appreciate your video, and i installed the 1.30 firmware update with no issues of the first try.
Cool Thing about Mixcast 4 is you can use garage band instead of the daw software. It’ll change your outlook on Tascam. The firmware 1.30 update is a game changer.
@@tombuck the problem I have is I want to use obs virtual camera into teams/zoom. Now I can use a virtual cable to output the audio from obs to any app. But the problem is obs output doesn’t take the same delays you would apply to your audio sources in obs.
My Rodecaster arrives today...so totally expect you to say "OMG, the Tascam is the Rode killer!" :p Actually, I'd be really surprised if you said that, but it would be sort of funny if you did. Oh, hey, thanks for the recommendation awhile back on the ColorWare MV7s. We ordered one for my girlfriend and it looks fantastic.
@@tombuck can you give me some pointers on how to do this without introducing feedback? I tried setting it up using logic but to hear the effects using the usb channel I start to introduce feedback… if I use the mix minus function I hear the effects but pretty sure I’m the only one hearing them
Hi Tom, can you tell me, did you record all this to the SD card in the Mixcast 4 and then sync it in post? I'm trying to figure out how I integrate the Mixcast 4 into my setup for streaming, but it looks like you just have the 2 XLR mic inputs being used and the power cord. I can't see any cables you might be using to pass the audio out to the computer to capture the audio and the video at the same time. Thanks!
Well its going to be interesting what Mackie / Rode and Tascam are doing for next thing, I'm hope to see is these all coming out with a piece that includes a video swicher included, like an intergated ATEM....
2:45 I sort of wish every mixer was build with inputs like those on radiomixers. On most of those faders can be XLR, jack or stero cinch (except for telco). Mic or line. Older models often mic/line/phono, but meh, phono preamps if you need to. At least on these digital mixers we can easily couple two channels to make a stereo one, but then you could have five stereo devices connected on this, not three. Then again, takes up space on the back. That's why those mixers are so high, but also more expensive.
@@tombuck Thanks! I bought the RCP a long time ago because of your recommendation( I’m sure you hear that all the time) and I love it. Do you plug the Fethead directly into the back of the RCP as opposed to the mic itself?
The thing i mis the most on the Rodecaster are a fixed audio output for line out. That way you can hook up some speakers and still send the audio to let's say Atem Mini. And a "basic setup" for people who don't know all the settings. So if anyone is messing up the audio settings , hit the "basic setup" and it will revert back to the settings you put in. Another thing i miss is a better line input. The TRRS is nice but a simple cinch of jack input makes it a lot more usable. A thing that annoys me is when you boot the Rodecaster up, the headphone make a loud *CLICK* noise, even with all the headphone volumes turned down. So even though the Rodecaster is a nice thing and was the first "kid on the block", technically i would go to the Tascam. No numbers next to the metersection was one thing Rode had too. That came with a softwareupdate. Tascam can do the same.
This is all good feedback that I'd recommend sending directly to Rode to see if it might make it's way into future updates. For the "Basic Setup" idea, you can use the Rode app to save show settings, which will also save all your effects and stuff. It's not internal on the RCP itself, but it's definitely helpful.
Hi Tom, if correct, this Tascam device should have -56.5 dBu as line-up level (gain). You have to subtract the Maximum input level, which is +10 dBu from the Gain range, which is 66.5 dB. Hope this helps!
@@tombuck Btw, the Rodecaster Pro should have -52 dBu as max gain of mic input. Do you notice a difference when testing the SM7B? You should be able to have a bit more sound coming out of the Tascam. But yeah, as you have pointed it out, what good is more gain if it's not that clean.
Really thorough review/overview. The Mixcast has some neat features, but it's not 3 years better than the RCP. But it's still a good thing to have all this competition in the space that Rode invented
You have the best videos. Thank you for sharing… How do I update the firmware on the Tascam mixcast 4? I wasn’t sure if I do it through my computer via USB or I need to use a SD card? Newbie 😌. I appreciate your time
1. Thank you for the kind words! 2. Firmware...oh boy. I had a terrible time trying to do it. You're supposed to be able to do it through USB or the SD card, but I couldn't get it to work either way. I think it was user error, since I've seen lots of people talking about how great the new firmware is, but I spent 2 hours and gave up.
It does not, at least not yet. Tascam seems to be more active with firmware updates than Zoom, but nobody compares to Rode with the crazy amount of updates they make.
@@tombuck Thanks Tom. I am going to purchase either a RODECaster Pro, The Mixcast 4 or the Zoom P8 and right now RODE is in the lead. Especially since as you said, This board does not offer anything new and fails to deliver on the MIDI control using the sound pads. If it were $100+ cheaper, ok maybe. Thanks again for the info.
(14:57) It kinda sounded like a trollge voice. When it's on "WAY TOO" low pitched. It does the same as my Soundcard, But It's probably a cheaper one than what you have showed on the video. (Mine is a V8s Soundcard)
Hmmm I am thinking then I got a really good deal on the Tascam for only $100. Will upgrade firmware, already download it. Will this work together with my Native Instruments S4 MK3 music mixer?
I love all the inputs/outputs on the Tascam. That’s really something you don’t have the choice with the RCP. With the RCP you have to go XLR for the first four lines, and the Tascam looks to allow more routing possibilities. I still prefer the RCP tho
@@tombuck Thank you so much for taking time to help out. I greatly appreciate it. I am a relatively new podcaster, with a history in broadcasting, so it's been an incredible learning opportunity for me. Oh how I wish I could have had some of this equipment 30 years ago! What fun I could have had! Thanks again, and please know I LOVE your posts and reviews. It has helped me in my search for equipment....although I am biased more towards The Podtrak P8 :-) All my best, Tom. Keep at it....
My third video of yours this morning as I try to decide if I should buy Apollo twin x dau or get the rodecaster because I wouldn’t mind having more options for future use - any thoughts?
Both are excellent so you can’t go wrong! The Apollo is definitely a premium interface, and of course the RCP has the advantage of built in recording and more inputs. A lot just comes down to your specific workflow.
@@tombuck ya that’s why I am not sure Apollo is sufficient for now, but the utility of the recording and podcasting features in the rcp are appealing tho too.
@@tombuck Yeah, I usually skip this reading stuff as most of us probably. But I think I saw it on a video by Booth Junky and read it then to confirm the information.
I bet if you brought the Tascam, especially with the new update that we got a few weeks ago, you'll change your mind and not be so biased. You are trying so hard NOT to like the Tascam. I mean mentioning where it's manufactured??You honestly think the RCP doesn't have Chinese parts?? IMO the Tascam is better. I own both plus the Podtrak P8. If you ask me I recommend the Tascam. And guess what?? The new RCP 2 will probably have many features implemented that the Tascam already has. Buuuuuut, I love your channel Tom. Thanks. 👍🏾👍🏾
This is a great comparison! After a few days of going back and forth between the two units I have decided to go with the Rodecaster Pro!!! The main reason is...SOUND QUALITY!!! After watching a lot of reviews for the TM4 I feel that the audio coming out of the unit just sounds bass heavy. While at first the low end can be appealing, I now feel that the TM4 just does not have the richness and brightness of the RCP. For that reason alone I have to go with the RCP. I can work around everything else!
Got a queestion for you I pulled my mixcast 4 out of it's box, hooked up the mics into the input and its not working. The power is on but there are no level when i try to make any sounds. Any advice?
They can. The Focusrite Vocaster is the only one I've found with a dedicated "camera output," which works really well, but you can make it work with any of the Tascam/Rode/Boss-type mixers.
i feel like having a dejavu :) Did you reupload it? Great video again, i had a bad time with the RCP, and like the tascam since. But both are great in total. Me feeling was, that the tascam has a way better noise gateway - at least with the default settings.
Check out my review of the Zoom PodTrak P8 if you're interested in comparing other mixers to the Rodecaster Pro: ruclips.net/video/PyfPsbB8XSI/видео.html And yes, Tascam did release a firmware update that adds some nifty features (including the ability to access each channel directly), but wow, the update process is an absolute nightmare.
If you connect your phone to the mixer, can you talk to someone on the phone via the mic connected to the mixer and hear them on th headphones? I ask because my Son talks to his friend over Facebook messenger and I'd like to record their conversation while he's recording his RUclips video. This way I can have both of their voices in the video and have full context of what's going on. I really appreciate your review!
@@tombuck that's great! Also, can you apply a VST to your mic right on the mixer or is there some Tascan PC software that allows you to add granular eq to color my audio live so I don't have to to any post EQ work? I prefer to actively apply a VST to my mic so I can hear what the audio is going to sound like as it's being recorded. Currently, I'm doing this on two GoXLR's. Thanks again!
I just recently purchased a Rodecaster Pro for my class. Do you know if there is any way to increase the memory on the sounds bank? Can music be recorded in the memory card and then assign it to the sounds bank? Any help will be appreciated :)
QUESTION! I've had the rodecaster for over a year now and have recorded close to 100 podcast episodes. I love seeing the market expand for these and I cant wait to see what new thing rode does down the line! So, here's my question. Right now I run 6 mics into the rodecaster. I use XLR splitters. Is there a "best" splitter to use or maybe a whole different setup altogether? I want the audio to sound the best but sometimes the splitters cause a ringing which is hard to hear for others but really distracting once you notice it. I'd love a video on good XLR splitters. I know you posted a video on how to connect multiple mics to the rodecaster a long time ago, but is there a best splitting method?
That's a great question! I don't know a ton about splitters myself, so maybe it's a topic worth learning more about? Or maybe there's someone else here who can chime in with a bit more knowledge/experience.
@@johnlentokone7318 right now I have 6 mics hooked up but the Eg DAP-audio compact 8.1 looks great and is in my price range as a small podcaster. I would be able to connect that to the rodecaster simply? Is there a video or article you recommend I should look at? And if I were to browse different options, what others would you suggest or perhaps what brands? And thanks for the information!!
@@pompadourprince2606 I don't have used DAP-audio compact 8.1 or similar products. You can use Rodecaster's phone connection. As fas as I know that is TRRS connection which can be used as input and output. With a adapter which convers a male 3.5 mm TRRS to two female 3.5 mm TRS, you can have separate connections for input and output. Now you can use a RCA to 3.5 mm TRS cable to connect DAP-audio to the Rodecaster. If you use Rodecaster's mix minus feature for the phone connection, the output from DAP-audio won't be send to the 3.5 mm female TRS output.
The P8 and the Mixcast are both pretty even in terms of noise (they're both quite good). The Rodecaster Pro 2 and Rodecaster Duo each have better preamps though, which are quite a bit clearer, if they're within your budget.
Tom, I have the $$$ for a Rode Caster Pro now. But, with it being out for several years, in your opinion, buy now, or wait a bit longer to see if there are any leaks of new on in 2022. I am currently using the Zoom H6, but I am very interested in all the "pluses" you have talked about in your videos. Thank you for your insight. Chris
@@chrisprestero7972 if you could wait, do it. With more competition I'm sure the good folks at RODE are developing the next step for a portable podcast studio as we speak.
20:10 wow that 2.5 sec long mention about "additional sources" kinda beat's the Podcaster and the podcaster 2 even ;) looks like there is a device thats made for streamers after all. unless only the software can control sources. that would be a bummer. .. would you be able to test that at some point?
I dontated this one after the review so I don't have access to it anymore. And now that the RCP II is here, I can't really think of anything that truly competes with it.
@@tombuck RCP II only have the bare minimum for a streamer, as streaming is more PC centered, the ability to have moree than the bare minimum virtual channels OR the ability to adress existing virtual channel is crutial for streaming PC based. the RCP2 comes short on that one with only having it's own main and voice channel it still requires additional software such as Voicemeeter which can;t be acessed by the RCP :(
@Tom Buck Thanks so much for this great video. I have been binge watching your videos All-day. I'm looking to start a podcast with some friends and doing some research on hardware/gear. Upon seeing this video, I'm considering getting the Tascam Mixcast 4. However I have a few questions. 1. Can 4 headsets be plugged into the Mixcast 4 at once? If Yes, does each headset play in real time what every other person is saying or just the wearers own voice? 2. Does the Mixcast 4 have an SD card slot to record audio to or it just records to PC/mobile phone? 3. Which podcaster will you recommend if money wasn't an issue? that's aside the two in this video I'd really appreciate your kindest and earliest response to decide and start preparation to acquire the needed gear. Thanks in Advance
Thanks for the kind words! 1. Yes 4 mics can be used at once and they'll all play the full mix. 2. There's a full size SD card slot 3. The Rodcecaster is my absolute favorite, hands down. Although it is a bit long in the tooth these days, so Im' anxious to see if something new comes out this year.
Yes, it should work. There are a lot of variables with interfaces/cables/etc, but in general interfaces like this aren't too picky (I run my Rodecaster through a hub).
Tom, I'm a fairly recent subscriber, and I really enjoy your informative and well-produced videos as I am planning to dabble in video streaming and podcasting. I appreciate your disclaimer at the beginning about your biased feelings in favor of the Rodecaster, and I feel overall you still gave a very fair review of the Mixcast 4. The only part that I thought was a bit of a reach in favor of the Rodecaster over the Mixcast 4 is in regards to the design and manufacturing country being the same, because, "...that helps to create really high-quality products." All of your Apple devices and your Sony cameras are designed in one country and manufactured in another and yet those are all high-quality products that you have recommended in other videos without any manufacturing disclaimer. Just some feedback, but like I said overall I enjoy your videos and I believe I will be happy with either the Rode or the Tascam and will just get whichever is cheaper when I am ready to buy.
It's a fair point. If I could buy an iPhone that was produced in a different country, I would, but unfortunately that's not an option. In cases where it IS an option, then I think it's great to be able to choose.
Thanks for such a detailed review and comparison! Looks like I would be happy with either device, though I too feel like I would appreciate the better control on the Rodecaster as opposed to the automatic settings on the Miracast. Then again, the better preamps on the Miracast are making me lean a bit more towards that 🤔
Are you a mind reader, or am I? I was looking just yesterday for your thoughts on the MixCast4. Although I can't afford one, now I know which one to start saving for. I'm currently using a Soundcraft Notepad 8-Fx, but I'd like something that has a program monitor out so I can hear exactly what is being steamed. Thank you so much for your channel.
I’m a little late on watching this video. I’ve been running the mixcast 4 for about 8 months and it has been great but one thing you missed that is not good about it, when you are recording on the soundboard only you cannot switch the sound pad pages you literally have to stop the recording and switch pages and start a new recording. I will be upgrading to the new Rodecaster pro 2 very soon and can’t wait!
I think they're both really good but I think i like the mixcast more because when I look at it I can easily understand how to use it unlike the rodecaster that confused me when i saw it
If you need more than a simple interface (i.e. on board recording, EQ, processing, etc), then yes! If you're using 3 or 4 mics then the RCP2 is a great choice, but if you're only using 1-2 mics, then the Rodecaster Duo or even the Mackie DLZ Creator XS are great options too with lower prices.
Well the one I been trying to get is used but in great condition.... Have you heard about any fake RODECaster in the market, I'm buying from ebay, and one of our shure MV7 came out fake, but we send it back...
no batteries. Which makes the zoom P8 so interesting. You can just set up outside and record a podcast whereever. I really which tascam thought of that!

Tascam's product history is pretty mind blowing! They've been doing cool stuff for ages.
@@johnlentokone7318 x32 is for live stage production mostly
Not so. The various X32 models are easily multifunctional for live stage, monitor mixing, studio recording, etc ,although the X32 Compact and X32 Producer models in the line which lend themselves more readily to additional uses beyond live use, by virtue of their smaller footprint
The rodecaster is what brought me to your channel back when you had maybe 14k subs or something. Super fun following your journey on here, man!
As usual, came here for the review, stayed for the review, but laughed stupidly at the puns (and the cuts on them haha).
Please don’t change!
As a Rodecaster Pro user I’ll admit the Mixcast 4 has a few features I envy. However, it’s the RCP for me with its mic preamps, master compressor and overall sound quality. 🎙😇🙏🏾
They’re both great! But yeah, I definitely prefer the RCP 👍
I have been patiently awaiting this video!! Thanks Tom! Amazing job as always!
It took a while but I did it! 😁
“Mic who?”
“Mic check 1,2”
Beeeeepppp!
Tom: “Oops!”
😂😂😂😂
Man, Tom, you never fail to bring the laughs while thoroughly reviewing a product.
Thank you for always bringing your A game. Thanks to you, I purchased the Rodecaster Pro because of how passionate you are about it.
As a narrator, it has totally changed my voiceovers!
Keep up the great work. Looking forward to many more of your videos!
I meant to play the rimshot 🤦🏻♂️
BTW, great great voice on the Earthworks Mic...
This is awesome to hear! I definitely think the Tascam outperforms the Zoom pretty heavily. It’s a really nice unit!
It’s definitely a tricky subject, but I have a lot of love towards Røde for how they operate.
Is this feature something Rode offers now through an update?
Excellent video, thank you for making the review.
As a long time user of Tascam products - started with the 244 4 track cassette portastudio in early 80's, great to see them expand into the podcast area also.
Both the rode and tascam are good products by the looks of it.
They’ve been around forever! Tascam has a pretty awesome lineup.
The Mixcast 4 looks like some great hardware, but I don't regret picking up a Rodecaster Pro after watching this comparison and walk through. Thanks for putting out the original review for the RCP which led me to picking it up. It's really helpful for seeing comparisons to the RCP.
I’ll never regret my RCP! Even if it ever gets replaced by some future thing, it’ll be kept as a super sentimental memento 😁
I agree! It's been used everyday for over 3 years and I love every time I use it.
But transfer music to pad you'll need to convert it to wav first, that's bit annoying.
the trrs out line is it the same job for the monitor output ? like speakers ?
I would use the 1/4” outputs for delivering the best quality to monitors.
The pitch shift is super fun 😁
The Rodecaster's USB power adaptor works on the Tascam Mixcast 4. I use it and it works. This review would be even better if you reviewed the latest firmware. That would be fairer. This machine is better than the Rodecaster IMO, that's why I sold my Rodecaster to get this.
You'll see a note in my pinned comment- I had a terrible time updating firmware on mine. I'm sure it was user error because I haven't heard of anyone having this issue, but it was an absolute nightmare compared to Rode's one-click method, so I just left it out. I spent two hours fighting with this thing and then called it quits.
what's latest firmware update ?
Great review I like this. I hope the Rodecaster Pro 2 can have many of the features like a quarter inch jack for the mic added. Thanks for taking the time to create this review.
Thanks David! I would definitely be interested to see how Rode responds to all of these competing devices.
His unit did use firmware 1.21 0137.
very helpfull video. it makes a lot clear over the use of this mixcast 4 .. thanks !
Glad it was helpful!
I haven't had any ground loop issues with mine in the 3 years I've had it, so I can't speak to that personally.
Yes, the Tascam’s are significantly cleaner.
@@tombuck Interesting, thank you! Hopefully RODE addresses this in the second generation RodeCaster Pro.
Just picked up the Tascam for $399…I felt like it was a much better value being that its $300 less the the RCP2. Appreciate your video, and i installed the 1.30 firmware update with no issues of the first try.
$300 is an absolute steal. I hope you enjoy it!
The gain range is 66.5 dB and the max input level is +10 dBu, so you can get 56 dB of gain, if my understanding is correct.
Cool Thing about Mixcast 4 is you can use garage band instead of the daw software. It’ll change your outlook on Tascam. The firmware 1.30 update is a game changer.
Hey Tom, seems like RCP II is on its way. Looking forward to your review.
If the rumors are true, it'll be the mic drop of mixer/recorders 🤐
@@tombuck that was a loud mic drop indeed ^ ^. How's the smart pad - clickity ? soft? thanks!
Great video as always so am I right in thinking you can’t add a usb output delay on the rode as that’s a bit of deal breaker for me.
There isn’t one built in, but fortunately most streaming software does have it.
@@tombuck the problem I have is I want to use obs virtual camera into teams/zoom. Now I can use a virtual cable to output the audio from obs to any app. But the problem is obs output doesn’t take the same delays you would apply to your audio sources in obs.
Does this have a parametric equalizer? That would make it stand out against the RCP2
My Rodecaster arrives today...so totally expect you to say "OMG, the Tascam is the Rode killer!" :p
Actually, I'd be really surprised if you said that, but it would be sort of funny if you did.
Oh, hey, thanks for the recommendation awhile back on the ColorWare MV7s. We ordered one for my girlfriend and it looks fantastic.
Awesome! Colorware does a really good job. Hope you like your RCP!
so my big question..... Is there any way to add effects on my vocal (ie delay, reverb, autotune...) for my livestreams via the rodecaster ?????
You’ll need to use software of some sort to add effects.
@@tombuck can you give me some pointers on how to do this without introducing feedback? I tried setting it up using logic but to hear the effects using the usb channel I start to introduce feedback… if I use the mix minus function I hear the effects but pretty sure I’m the only one hearing them
Can that 3.5 line out on the back be used to plus into a camera to provide audio to the camera?
Yes, but you might need to make some adjustments with your camera's gain and/or the Mixcast settings to get the cleanest signal.
@@tombuck thanks. Keep up the good work
Hi Tom, can you tell me, did you record all this to the SD card in the Mixcast 4 and then sync it in post? I'm trying to figure out how I integrate the Mixcast 4 into my setup for streaming, but it looks like you just have the 2 XLR mic inputs being used and the power cord. I can't see any cables you might be using to pass the audio out to the computer to capture the audio and the video at the same time. Thanks!
Well its going to be interesting what Mackie / Rode and Tascam are doing for next thing, I'm hope to see is these all coming out with a piece that includes a video swicher included, like an intergated ATEM....
Tbh I haze no intrest in some of these topics but DANM Tom makes these fun to learn about
This is a ridiculously nice compliment- thank you!
Hey Tom what is your favorite mic booster? Fethead,Cloudlifter, etc?
I like the FetHead because I think it’s the cleanest and it’s also possible to connect it directly to a mic.
I'm on the RODECASTER Pro team -- Thanks, Tom!
It's a good team!
Those it have mic cut off when you go on air?
Hi Tom, if correct, this Tascam device should have -56.5 dBu as line-up level (gain). You have to subtract the Maximum input level, which is +10 dBu from the Gain range, which is 66.5 dB. Hope this helps!
That REALLY helps! Thank you 🙏
@@tombuck Great, you're welcome!
I need to up my dad joke/pin game. You are a legend sir. Awesome review!
It takes years of practice.
Really thorough review/overview. The Mixcast has some neat features, but it's not 3 years better than the RCP. But it's still a good thing to have all this competition in the space that Rode invented
I think competition is always good for these things 👍
You have the best videos. Thank you for sharing… How do I update the firmware on the Tascam mixcast 4? I wasn’t sure if I do it through my computer via USB or I need to use a SD card? Newbie 😌. I appreciate your time
1. Thank you for the kind words!
2. Firmware...oh boy. I had a terrible time trying to do it. You're supposed to be able to do it through USB or the SD card, but I couldn't get it to work either way. I think it was user error, since I've seen lots of people talking about how great the new firmware is, but I spent 2 hours and gave up.
are there meanwhile Asio drivers by Rode for the Roadcaster MK1 ?
I didn't realize Tascam was in the Tomato business...but from what I can tell they're playing Ketchup. 😂
I relish your commentary.
Recent firmware changes in the RODECaster Pro now allows the sound pads to be midi controllers. Does the Mixcast 4 offer the same functionality?
It does not, at least not yet. Tascam seems to be more active with firmware updates than Zoom, but nobody compares to Rode with the crazy amount of updates they make.
@@tombuck Thanks Tom. I am going to purchase either a RODECaster Pro, The Mixcast 4 or the Zoom P8 and right now RODE is in the lead. Especially since as you said, This board does not offer anything new and fails to deliver on the MIDI control using the sound pads. If it were $100+ cheaper, ok maybe. Thanks again for the info.
(14:57)
It kinda sounded like a trollge voice. When it's on "WAY TOO" low pitched.
It does the same as my Soundcard, But It's probably a cheaper one than what you have showed on the video. (Mine is a V8s Soundcard)
You can definitely do a lot of these things with software! But there is something nice about having abilities in a separate unit too 👍
Definitely, Yes.
Ik this is a dumb question i just want confirmation. Usb delay doesnt delay your own listening and feedback right?
Not a dumb question at all! USB does introduce a delay, but if you connect your headphones to the Miscast itself, then there's zero latency.
Awesome and highly detailed as always! Great video
Thanks Paul!
Hmmm I am thinking then I got a really good deal on the Tascam for only $100. Will upgrade firmware, already download it. Will this work together with my Native Instruments S4 MK3 music mixer?
That is an INCREDIBLE deal. I can't say if it'll work with the MK3, but dang, $100 is a steal.
I love all the inputs/outputs on the Tascam. That’s really something you don’t have the choice with the RCP. With the RCP you have to go XLR for the first four lines, and the Tascam looks to allow more routing possibilities. I still prefer the RCP tho
Where do you get the colored RK345s for the SM7B? I love the blue!
reporterstore.com 👍
In the user instructions of the fethead they tell you to connect it directly to the mic and NOT to the audio interface.
Probably a good idea to read those manual things 😉
Thanks. 👍🏾👍🏾
I feel like I was pretty fair to the Tascam. I did try and install the firmware but that was a nightmare of a process so I left it out of the video.
Any advice?
Depending on the mics, maybe Phantom Power needs to be turned on?
@@tombuck yes I did turn on phantom power on but still nothing
hiya ! nice video, could this kind of mixers work for connecting a stereo line signal, and record audio to a phone and a camcorder with mic in jack?
They can. The Focusrite Vocaster is the only one I've found with a dedicated "camera output," which works really well, but you can make it work with any of the Tascam/Rode/Boss-type mixers.
@@tombuck thanks soo much !
i feel like having a dejavu :) Did you reupload it? Great video again, i had a bad time with the RCP, and like the tascam since. But both are great in total. Me feeling was, that the tascam has a way better noise gateway - at least with the default settings.
Nope, this is the first time it’s been published 😁
I did review the Zoom P8 though, so maybe that feels similar?
I can see some diffrent applications for this device other than podcasting but it lacks XLR out and mains out.
Check out my review of the Zoom PodTrak P8 if you're interested in comparing other mixers to the Rodecaster Pro: ruclips.net/video/PyfPsbB8XSI/видео.html
And yes, Tascam did release a firmware update that adds some nifty features (including the ability to access each channel directly), but wow, the update process is an absolute nightmare.
Yes! You can do that on either device with Bluetooth or using a TRRS cable.
The sound banks are all loaded internally (so that way nothing is affected when you remove the memory card).
❤️ great content as always! Thanks Tom
Thank you very much!
You need a mixer to connect more than four mics to the Rodecaster. Eg DAP-Audio Compact 8.1. Or better, buy a Behringer X32 Producer.
That “Hello Children” got me 😂
The zoom podtrack 8 does it have a cleaner sound?
The P8 and the Mixcast are both pretty even in terms of noise (they're both quite good). The Rodecaster Pro 2 and Rodecaster Duo each have better preamps though, which are quite a bit clearer, if they're within your budget.
@@tombuck thank you! Saludos desde Mexico🇲🇽
Doesn't the rodecaster allow for some kind of talk back? Or am I completely mistaken?
You can fiddle with the mute/solo buttons, but it doesn't have the same simple button as the Mixcast does.
Chris
Your guess is as good as mine, but if you have the ability to wait a bit “just to be safe” that’s what I would do.
@@tombuck thank you for the fast reply. I will hold off. I feel Rode would want to put an updated Caster Pro to battle the Tascam Mixcaast 4.
@@chrisprestero7972 if you could wait, do it. With more competition I'm sure the good folks at RODE are developing the next step for a portable podcast studio as we speak.
@@makatron Thanks for the reply.....decided to wait and see if anything new comes out. :)
@@tombuck RCP II only have the bare minimum for a streamer, as streaming is more PC centered, the ability to have moree than the bare minimum virtual channels OR the ability to adress existing virtual channel is crutial for streaming PC based. the RCP2 comes short on that one with only having it's own main and voice channel it still requires additional software such as Voicemeeter which can;t be acessed by the RCP :(
Hello sir.
Please i use Tascam US-42B with OBS but when i play video from the OBS it produces no sound
3. Which podcaster will you recommend if money wasn't an issue? that's aside the two in this video
I'd really appreciate your kindest and earliest response to decide and start preparation to acquire the needed gear. Thanks in Advance
Thanks for the kind words!
1. Yes 4 mics can be used at once and they'll all play the full mix.
2. There's a full size SD card slot
3. The Rodcecaster is my absolute favorite, hands down. Although it is a bit long in the tooth these days, so Im' anxious to see if something new comes out this year.
@@tombuck thanks so much for taking the time to reply.
I think I'd go for the Mixcaster for now. wish me luck
tom new viewer here would the tascam mixcast 4 work with thunder bolt dock
If i want to cennect a guitar to the Mixcast, do i have to do something special or is it simply not possible?
You can use the 1/4" inputs and then set that channel to line level. 👍
Wow, when you switched to the EarthWorks, the SQ tanked hard. Very muddy. Is that the mic itself, or the Tascam?
The Earthworks is normally a super exceptional mic.
Hi, please I'm about to buy the tascam , because i will use it for tiktok and Facebook live. Should i buy the RCP II , you think is better choice?
The RCPII or Rodecaster Duo are definitely better choices now.
Great job Tom!
Thank you!
Thanks for such a detailed review and comparison! Looks like I would be happy with either device, though I too feel like I would appreciate the better control on the Rodecaster as opposed to the automatic settings on the Miracast. Then again, the better preamps on the Miracast are making me lean a bit more towards that 🤔
15:48 oh no, they got Chef inside that machine!!!!
So glad to hear it! I have a feeling this will be a very interesting year for podcast mixers, so it might be worth saving for a bit.
Great comparison
Wow, you really do struggle to overcome your pro-Rode bias. Thanks, as always, for your videos.
I'm biased, but with good reason. They make good stuff!
I think they're both really good but I think i like the mixcast more because when I look at it I can easily understand how to use it unlike the rodecaster that confused me when i saw it
That's important! They're definitely both awesome units.
I'm a Rodecaster Pro user and wanna move to Tascam Mixcast. But as the Rodecaster Pro 2 released, I prefer to choose it rather than Mixcast.
I wold definitely choose this over the Mixcast (and the Mixcast is pretty decent).
Rode Rodecaster Pro Podcast Production Studio
Do you recommend me this one, as a beginner streaming
If you need more than a simple interface (i.e. on board recording, EQ, processing, etc), then yes! If you're using 3 or 4 mics then the RCP2 is a great choice, but if you're only using 1-2 mics, then the Rodecaster Duo or even the Mackie DLZ Creator XS are great options too with lower prices.
Well the one I been trying to get is used but in great condition....
Have you heard about any fake RODECaster in the market, I'm buying from ebay, and one of our shure MV7 came out fake, but we send it back...
Can the pads be midi mapped?
no batteries. Which makes the zoom P8 so interesting. You can just set up outside and record a podcast whereever. I really which tascam thought of that!
Love it day joke in less than 30 seconds is that a new record?
You gotta hook 'em from the start!
Wow, another great review
Glad you enjoyed it
Hey Tom, or anyone ??With headphones did you notice some white noise? I just got mines and when I plug my headphone in and turn the volume up I notice some white noise in the headphones, is this normal? I have tried several headphones, same thing. I did notice though on both pair of headphones DT770 80oh pro and audio technica mx50 if I pulled the cable slightly out the hiss noise disappears and I could still hear my audio very well. just trying to make sure my unit isn't jacked up out of the box.
If you really crank the headphone gain you'll probably hear some, but otherwise I found the headphone preamps to be very quiet on the Tascam.
