Anyone notice that Tom Brookshier incorrectly used the term "knot" to describe the wind? In the context, anyway, the wind speed was displayed in miles per hours, not knots.
This is the first week for Pots and Pans (debuted in Week 4 of the 1986 season). If a full game with Tom Brookshier on play-by-play pops up, I'd check it out to see how he was in that role compared to color commentator alongside Pat Summerall.
Despite this high profile match-up, game did not sell-out at the Orange Bowl until game day. Thus game was NOT broadcasted in Miami, West Palm Beach, Fort Meyers Markets. One of six home blackouts in 1986 (last year at OB before moving to Joe Robbie Stadium).
Yeah, and move Evan Washburn to the play-by-play role (replacing Greg Gumbel) with Trent Green to make room for Allie LaForce as a member of the #2 broadcast team with the team of Ian 🦅 and Tony Romo while Jim Nantz will stay on lead play-by-play announcer with returning analyst Phil Simms and sideline reporter Tracy "The 🐺" Wolfson! Not to mention bringing back the 1981-85 NFL on CBS theme song.
He was actually fairly good on this broadcast (When I look past the horrific game the Dolphins played)... This was definitely the highest profile game Brookshier had during his final year... I hope another game turns up for you to evaluate (I may upload an end of quarter break next time so you could see a brief snippet)... :)
Brookshire and Vermil! Nice combo! Brookshire was much better as a "color" guy, and when he was teamed up with Pat Summerall gave us 6 years of GREAT football from the booth. Vermil got his start in the booth with Frank Glieber who died a couple of years previous. Glieber and Vermil quickly moved up to the no.2 team behind Summerall and Madden. I remember Glieber and Vermil calling many Redskins (my favorite team at the time) games, and it was Vermil who really put the heat on the producers of the games where the Redskins were featured because the 1 Back Offense was so potent and had so many elements to it, he felt like it needed to broken down in depth. The West Coast Offense was rather simple compared to the complex blocking schemes and odd formations of the 1 Back Offense created and perfected by Redskins Head Coach Joe Gibbs. Mainly to deal with Mr. Lawrence Taylor of the Giants Anyway, Brookshire and Vermil could have been a really good team, had not Brookshire said his misunderstood and controversial comments about Louisville basketball. How about Vermil and Brent Musberger doing College Football in the late 80's into the 90's? They were without a doubt a top team "All Time"! Add in Keith Jackson (with anyone) and you we were truly treated to damn good football, and even better people presenting it to us. Let's hope that the new generation of announcers can keep the tradition going.
@@guillermosanchez8843 Stram did work CBS radio on Monday Night Football for a few years with Jack Buck. Some fans turned down the sound to listen to them.
i was at that game. i remember marino threw a pick to tom holmoe returned for a TD and made a really pitiful attempt at tackling him. I think we ended up losing pretty much by the same score we lost to SF in the SB the year or so before. Also I think montana didn't play that day
Correct! We lost this one by a 31-16 score... only 1 TD off the Super Bowl score, but this was much better statistically for the Dolphins (Except for the turnovers, LOL)... Jeff Kemp got the start in place of an injured Montana... The Defense (Which through the first 5 games was the most disastrous crap I've ever seen at the NFL level, giving up 50+ twice and 30+ in 2 of the other 3) did not make any game changing plays...
Well, yes they did, but this is one of those rare times where Marino was the culprit more than anything else (The Dolphins moved the ball well, but INTS in SF territory killed the Fins and Marino was ultimately benched)...
That's the way the NFL's interconference game broadcast rules were then, and still are with differences-- visiting side determines network (49ers in Miami meant it was on CBS [NFC visiting AFC], while if the Dolphins [or any AFC team] were visiting an NFC side, it would be on NBC).
It's interesting that two men HEAVILY associated with the Eagles (Tom Brookshire and Dick Vermeil) called this game. I believe this would be Brookshire's last year as a broadcaster before he created WIP at 610 (now at 94.1 FM) in Philadelphia as the nation's first all-Sports talk station and ran it for many years.
WREYtube. He also called the tie game between the 4-2 San Francisco 49ers and the 5-1 Atlanta Falcons but it's unfortunate that the Falcons pretty much flopped after that game. Same with the Cowboys He called the game when they beat the Cardinals to go 6-2 and be in a T-1st NFC East but then they flopped to a 1-7 finish.
Me too... The Dolphins STILL did not adjust to the same 49er defensive game plan they employed in the Super Bowl... They were scoring TDs and we were kicking FGs... :(
The NFL on CBS, particularly the era from 1981 to 1994 and from 1998 to the present day, and its female dynamic duo of Allie LaForce and Tracy Wolfson (the female version of Cheech & Chong), will always both hold a special place in CBS' heart and a special place in the hearts of children everywhere!
Nowadays, since 2012, the focus of CBS Sports has always been on Tracy Wolfson and Allie LaForce, both of whom had recently covered Super Bowl 50 and who are adored by children all over the world.
I've felt much the same about CBS' college football coverage-- I personally believe that the game coverage theme song for the 1984 through '86 seasons was more about college football than today's song that started in 1987 (notwithstanding the popularity and fame of the 1987 theme song); I also personally believe that the theme song of The NCAA Today w/Brent Musburger (pregame show with him in the studio for the 1982 and '83 seasons; cuts of that NCAA Today theme song were used for studio coverage with Jim Nantz in the 1985 and '86 seasons) is also far better than the 1987 theme song (1987 song also used for studio coverage, much as the ES Posthumus theme song is used for both sides of today's NFL coverage on CBS).
Best opening to a football game might have been this song and opening. I wish they would bring this back.
Yeah, along with the 1981-86 theme song!
@@danalong1237 Yeah 1981-86 was great too loved that intro.
@@PredatorKingdom good lord, not that one
they won't, and they're better off for it
@@sillygoose635 WTF? That one was great.
Freaking EPIC theme music!!!!!
The Intro in the 80's was Epic
The openings back then can't be beat!
RIP Tom Brookshier, Pat Summerall's broadcast partner from 1975-81.
"Gone, but not forgotten!"
I think that CBS should bring back this intro on Thanksgiving weekend as part of Throwback Week and also in honor of Super Bowl 50.
Unfortunately, CBS did not bring back the intro for Super Bowl 50!
I don't understand why people want the past back, let it go.
Classic theme song love it bring back classic memories
I wish they could the pots and pans theme on the new NFL on cbs

Greatest intro theme ever besides the original monday night theme
"Hey, fellas!" "Are you ready for some football!?" 🏈 "Yes, it's Monday night!" 🌃 "let's go!"

It's a shame they couldn't have done renovation work on the Orange Bowl . To keep the Stadium around
Mr. Brookshier sounded a little like Hank Stram...65 toss-power trap, hey babes! Thanks for the video and go Steelers :)
I just saw the video for the first time today and I thought it was Hank Stram!

This is when football was football good times:-)
One of the first games I remember watching as a kid...the 49ers put it on Miami that day
Well, yes they did, but this is one of those rare times where Marino was the culprit more than anything else (The Dolphins moved the ball well, but INTS in SF territory killed the Fins and Marino was ultimately benched)...
Yeah, he threw what, 3-4 INTs??? It wasn't like the 49ers went up and down the field IIRC
Yup... 4 Picks before being benched... Dolphins outgained SF by almost 150 yards, but when you turn the ball over that much, it is usually fatal...
I can't decide between this one or the 1981-86 one, I also loved the ones they used from 1998-2003 as well.
This was the best football ever! CBS and NBC had awesome broadcasting to.
Unusual to see a Dolphins home game on CBS back then, much like seeing a Saints home game on NBC.
