I remember the first time I lost a week to Terraria. My family was on holiday at a rental house on a marina. I brought my laptop along so I could study for my upcoming exams. I did not, in fact, do that.
Progress in this game is either a crawl or a wall. You'll either slowly bit by bit get kinda better equipment, and change from a weapon that does 8 damage to 9 damage, or you'll find some sword or bow or even a gun and you'll go from not having a chance of surviving a boss to literally having too many materials from that boss that you don't even have anything to do with it. I remember my first time playing killing the Eye of Cthulhu and feeling like an absolute god, surviving by the skin of my teeth, and the next day I'm slaying like 4 of them in one night and the only thing holding me back was the amount of lenses I could get. This game feels a little hard to grasp, but trust me, just have a wiki open, and you'll slowly find your way through the world. If only real life had a wiki...

It's a very addicting game and I sometimes have to physically tear myself away from it. Yo I love the drill hair on this model for Mouse. Seems like she has a new model every time I see her. You love to see it.
"It seems like one of those games where you constantly need a guide in the background" also literally has a guide in the background as an NPC that he never once talked to for advice until way into the game :P 06:22
What's up with those new players who never talk to any NPCs? The first time I got stuck was when I needed to blow up crimson blocks. Then the Demolitionist NPC said, "Trying to get past that Crimstone, eh? Why not introduce it to one of these explosives!" I mean, he also said, "It's a good day to die!" so there's that.
It was not explained but the main point of terraria, besides mining for resources and survival is to either remove the crimson and corruption or at least get to a certain point in the game when you can do it to save your house/area. Every a few minutes, the crimson (the red blocks) and/or the corruption (the purple one) corrupts the nearest block. There would be a time where EVERYTHING will be covered in either or both. When this happens, you will have a hard time collecting specific items and drops because all you can collect is crimson-related drops. Some NPCs will also not spawn at that point because some NPC requires a specific biome requirement like the mushroom guy which needs to make a room in a mushroom biome. If crimson or corruption infects that area, it would become a crimson biome and mushroom guy will not spawn.
